Approximately 350 lots will come under the hammer, including a large selection of Victorian & Edwardian inlaid occasional furniture, a garden section of 30/40 items. 30 items approx. of Irish & Continental Art.

Of particular interest will be a very fine quality Irish bog oak Inkstand, carved as an Owl. The National Museum of Ireland has a similar owl which bears a maker’s label of Cornelius Goggin, who bore the title “Irish bog oak carver to Her Majesty” (Queen Victoria) in the business of carving bog oak artefacts at 13, Nassau Street Dublin, as early as the 1860’s. Bog oak is a black hardwood which is almost like ebony and was dug out of the bogs of Ireland. Bog oak was used for the manufacture of small articles, intended mainly for the tourist or souvenir trade, from the 1820s for over a century, reaching a peak from about 1850 to 1860.

Cornelius Goggin was trained by John Neate (1796 – 1838) who was the first to profess the manufacturing of bog oak artefacts.

It is a substantial piece, at 12-14″ high (I can get you exact measurements, if you are interested) . The size an quality of workmanship displayed in this example would suggest it to have been made possibly for the Dublin great Exhibition, circa 1852 or alternatively for an important private client

The item was discovered by Ted Hegarty, during a routine valuation for a private client.

Click here for link to some background on the area of bog oak.

Some particular items of furniture will include a Regency mahogany Hepplewhite style wine cooler, a Regency rosewood library table, Victorian mahogany dining table with two extra leaves etc.

The auction will take place on Sunday 19th February at 3pm, with viewing on Friday 17th from 11am-5pm, Saturday 18th 11am-5pm and on Sunday 19th (day of sale) from 11am-3pm, when auction starts. Catalogue will be online on Wednesday 15th at www.hegartyantiques.com.

Hegartys kicked off 2012 with a very successful Auction on Sunday 29th January. There was a huge crowd in attendance for the auction, and what was on offer, in terms of quality, variety and value did not disappoint, with 400 lots in all coming under the hammer from items as diverse as a 19th Century chart reader to a copy of “Bell’s weekly messenger” from October 1798.

There was a substantial collection of garden furniture for sale, including urns, garden planters and two sun dials which sold at very reasonable prices.

The feedback from the customers after the auction re-iterated the great value and quality that was on offer, many comparing the prices they paid for their purchases favourably with what they would have to pay for something not as unique in quality or style, in a regular retail outlet.

To home-owners, who are maybe daunted by the prospect of attending an antiques auction, we say “Why not come along and experience a very different retail experience, and be in with the chance of taking home something special that has stood the test of time, and is good for many more years to come!”

The forthcoming auction at Hegartys on Sunday 23rd October 2011, includes a large selection of antique furniture to include bookcases, two antique writing desks, a selection of Victorian chests of drawers, display cabinets, bedside cabinets and occasional furniture, an Irish Davenport writing desk, George II Irish foldover tea table, music cabinets, Pembroke tables, Sutherland tables, four sets of dining room chairs, dining table, large one-owner collection of 19th century & 20th century art to be sold without reserve, various French and Continental clock sets, Meissen and Dresden porcelain, Irish glass, drawing room furniture to include: a pair of Edwardian chairs, a three seater couch, longcase Grandfather clock etc. Irish & English silver will also feature, including a pair of salts by Hester Bateman, as well as a various collectibles & objects d’art.

In particular there will be a strong Asian section which will include articles from various estates including a Hungarian professor based in Kyoto, the descendants of a curator of the East India Company, and a distinguished Asian collector.

The auction includes Early Chinese jade, Chinese monochrome wares from the Ming and Qing dynasties, bronzes and porcelain form the Qing dynasty, important Sikh interest watercolours from the 19th century, as well as Japanese items from a private collection including a Meiji period (1868-1912) doll reputedly exhibited at the Hopp Ferenc Kelet-Ázsiai Művészeti Múzeum Budapest.

Hegarty’s last two auctions have sparked particular interest based on the high quality of Asian wares offered from private collections. It is interesting to note that the auctioneer attributes the trend not only to articles being offered by the much travelled population settled in the West Cork area but also to the strong historical trading link that Cork has historically had with the East, being on the trading link of the East India Company from the Orient to America.
