Light Rail Adds More Stops – Extends Line To Bergen County

About time!

New Jersey Transit will potentially extend its line from North Bergen to Tenafly or Englewood in Bergen County. Either alternative would create an additional 91st and Tonnelle Ave stop and possibly create a 4-acre 85th Street and Tonnelle substation for NJ Transit Vehicles.

Preferably, the agency would like to extend North Bergen’s Tonnelle Avenue station, which would add another 12 miles to a new station in Tenafly. This would then would create more stops in Englewood, Leonia, Palisades Park, and Ridgefield!

Sounds like a plan!

[Photos] Snooki & JWoww Are Official Jersey City Residents

Last night, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley officially moved into a converted old Jersey City firehouse.

Matthew Rogers (JWoww’s boyfriend) also moved in as reported via the Jersey Journal.

Fans hung out in the area just waiting to get a glimpse of the Jersey Shore stars as Snooki rolled up in her black and pink Escalade.

IMDB says the show will be called “Snooki and JWoww vs the World” and earlier this month the girls said it will be like a “Laverne and Shirley” type of show.

So for the next few weeks, the girls will be living it up in Jersey City on 38 Mercer Street.

Help The Fire Victims Of 300 Washington Street In Hoboken

Last Sunday evening a horrible fire swept the five story building on 300 Washington Street. Three firefighters from Hoboken were treated for smoke inhalation, knee injuries, and a broken hand.

“We are so grateful to the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect us every day,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “This is a reminder of how dangerous their work is. I thank everyone for coming together, saving lives and preventing the fire from spreading to other buildings – the Hoboken Fire Department, Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, EMS, and the mutual aid we received from various towns including Elizabeth, Newark, East Newark, Bloomfield, Bayonne and Jersey City.”

Fortunately, all 17 residents that lived in the building are safe but many of them lost everything they had and nine of them did not have insurance.

The mayor’s office along with Saints Peter and Paul Church have united to open a victims’ relief fund for the victims.

They are working with the families to asses their needs and are accepting donations like clothing, household items, and non-perishable foods. People can also donate money to the fire victimes by making a check payable to: Ss Peter & Paul Church on 404 Hudson Street in Hoboken.

New Jersey Democrats Put Pressure On Governor Christie To Raise Minimum Wage To $8.50

Only a week after he vetoed their bill to make same-sex marriage legal, New Jersey Democrats are already pushing the Republican Governor Chris Christie to raise the state’s hourly minimum wage from $7.50 to $8.50.

Legislation that would increase the state’s hourly minimum wage to $8.50 and then adjust it annually based on the Consumer Price Index was heard today by the Assembly Labor Committee in Committee Room 11 on the fourth floor of the State House Annex on West State Street in Trenton.

The Democrats have said that increasing the minimum wage — which is now $7.25 an hour — would be a priority this legislative session.

“This is economic stimulus and a recognition that thousands of households in New Jersey are struggling to subsist on minimum wage jobs that do not allow them to support their families,” Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, D-Essex, said. “This is also about livable wages. Quite simply, we should all support economic stimulus, increased consumer spending and livable wages.”

The bill, A-2162, increases New Jersey’s hourly minimum wage rate to $8.50 on July 1 and then requires that, starting in calendar year 2013, the minimum wage rate be adjusted on July 1 each year based on any increase in the CPI.

“Having a minimum wage that accurately reflects the state’s economic reality is common sense, but also an essential tool that will have an immediate positive effect on our economy,” Majority Leader Lou Greenwald, D-Camden, said. “Traditionally, New Jersey has been a leader in providing economic security for its working families by ensuring a fair minimum wage. This is the time to do the right thing
by increasing the minimum wage.”

The minimum wage in the state last was raised in 2009, when it went from $7.15 to $7.25. The hourly minimum was also raised in 2006 (to $6.15) and 2007 (to $7.15).

Hoboken’s Batman & Robin Are On The Search For New Heroes

Hoboken’s favorite crime-fighting mask commodores are looking for new recruits!

If you’ve ever been to Hoboken then you must have seen the two heroes parading around in their decked out bicycles and outlandish outfits!

Well the Mile Square City league recently recruited a Catwoman and Superman but they are actively seeking Spiderman, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor, just to name a few.

Participants interested in joining should have their own bicycle and costumes. They must commit to 90 minutes a week, attend an occasional fundraiser, shake hands, and pose for pics! Riding times will be after 5pm on weekdays and on the weekends.

Hoboken – February 14, 2012 — For the 2^nd year in a row, Empire agents served breakfast to Hoboken’s Senior Citizens at the Multi-Service Center in Hoboken.

The day began at 7am where chef Paul Fried and some early rising realtors prepared the Valentine’s Day meal of Salmon Dill Souffle, Hash Browns Au Gratin, French Toast, Eggs and Peppers, and Sausage Patties. The 20 agents helped serve the more than 100 guests, all the while grooving to nostalgic 80’s love pop songs.

Children from Park Prep Academy made special Valentine’s Day cards for the guests and helped distribute them among the tables.

The guests were also treated to a surprise visit from Mayor Dawn Zimmer and Councilperson Beth Mason.

Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini, in conjunction with Tom Foley and Cosmo of the Multi-Service Center, helped organize the event and made sure that everything ran smoothly.
