Happy weekend to you, dear readers. This is a commentary post, outside the norm for me, but I had an interesting experience this week that I wanted to share. There are no new releases in this post, or awesome designs to share with you…but if you wanna stick around anyway, then keep reading.

Now, certainly, this scenario is not at all new to SL…just new to me. I was copied. NOT copybotted, just copied. I didn’t even know about all the hubbub until it was over…which seems to be typical for me. A friend, Amaliscious Destiny of La’Licious Designs, became aware of a shop on the grid that was not only an exact copy of Amali’s own build, but contained copies of her products, as well as copies of products from The Loft, Lisp, and Second Spaces…and I’m sure more. Again, by the time I even became aware of what had happened, it was all over. The offending designer had been contacted and had removed the shop and all of its contents. Amali had taken pics that she posted to Plurk (how did we ever get by before Plurk?) and she included my piece that was copied. The copied version:

Clearly, it’s not an exact copy, but it’s pretty darn close, right down to the flowers on the wall…although I daresay mine is better. It is obvious, though, at least to me, that the copy was made as just that – a copy of my porch.

When the designer was questioned about having so many copies and having copied another’s shop build, her response was “I liked it.” Simple enough. The tricky thing here is that no rules were broken – like I said at the start, this was not copybotting. This was seeing something in SL and then reproducing it. That happens in RL all the time – someone sees something they like and decides to make it, too – maybe cheaper, maybe with a slight twist or a different material or color…but it’s still copying. It happens in SL, too, quite frequently. I know there are many, many debates in SL about copying and intellectual copyrights and who’s wrong or who’s right when it comes to situations similar to this. This post is not meant to engage in that debate or to present “my side” – I’m just sharing an experience and my thoughts.Honestly…I am a bit flattered that someone liked my design enough to try and make their own. Am I glad that the copy has been removed? Yeah, I am. I am not outraged that it existed to begin with…and if it had not been removed, I don’t know that I would really do anything about it, like contacting the creator or anything. While certainly I would hope folks try to come up with their own ideas, rather than just copying someone else’s, it is what it is, and I don’t feel like it’s an offense to me or that it impacts my business. In my mind, it would probably be more frustration than it’s worth for me to pursue any sort of corrective action, or whatever the appropriate term might be. I’m also kinda lazy, so factor that in.

Having said that, I do understand why this situation upset as many people as it did. It certainly could be seen as an insult, that someone would take another’s creativity and use it for their own profit. While copying like this may not technically break the rules (although that’s a grey area, I know), taking someone else’s creative idea, making it yourself, and then selling it to others, is lame. Quite lame, and makes the statement to the world “I have no creativity or good ideas myself, but I want cash – so here, take these instead.” Lame.

Ok, here’s where I really start rambling, so feel free to leave now.

There are so many facets to “copying”…my mind sort of takes off here. As a designer, I try – TRY – to be aware of the other creations already out there in SL. There have been many times when I’ve had a plan to create something specific (more specific than a generic table or chair)…and wouldn’t you know it, someone else gets to it first. I’m sure my fellow designers read alot of the same RL blogs and magazines that I do, so we’re bound to find similar inspirations. I keep a design file of RL things that I like, and that’s where I browse when I start new creations…I recently saw someone make (in SL) a really cool (RL) bed that I also had in my design file to use someday…so I shelved that, because I certainly don’t want to be a copycat myself. In that case, though, it wouldn’t have been me copying that designer’s SL creation…it would have been me making my own version of the same RL inspiration piece…but would Creator A be willing to accept that logic if I also released the same bed that they just released? I wouldn’t have copied them – I would have copied the same RL piece that they copied. Tricky, huh?

Which leads me to this facet – copying RL items. There are lots and lots of debates about that, too. I absolutely use RL ideas as inspirations – that’s why I have a design file. When I start creating, if I’m not doing something completely from scratch and entirely from my own brain, then I will browse those RL designs in my design file to look for inspiration, I try – TRY – not to copy RL items exactly. I try to use the colors and shapes to define my build, rather than copying piece for piece what I see in the RL pic. Or I’ll take an idea from this design, and an idea from that design, and bring them together into a “new” design of my own. I can’t say that I’m always successful at that, but that is my intent. So, is it right or wrong to copy from RL? If I see a room on one of my favorite RL design blogs, can I build that in SL? If an SL designer copies a RL room…then why can’t one SL designer copy another SL designer’s room? Just because it’s all in the same “world” at that point? These are strictly rhetorical questions, food for thought – I am not opening this can of worms on my blog. It’s been opened many times before around the grid, and I’m sure it will be opened many times more.

Okay, I think that’s enough out of me. This whole topic is an unresolvable argument, I’m sure. Too many grey areas overall. As designers, I hope we can all be aware and respectful of others’ creations, as much as possible (it’s a large grid to keep up with), and also recognize that there are many, many possible scenarios and facets to the whole idea of copying – and that we can be mindful of double standards and hopefully avoid them.

I like the rough cloth accents on the covered patio in the front. Lots and lots of windows in this house, which I also like. When you walk in, there are 2 rooms, one on each side, and the main living area opens up from that small entrance foyer. The columns are a nice touch, a subtly grand (that may be an oxymoron) introduction to the space.

There are sliding doors on two sides of the room – one set takes you to a small open patio, and the other takes you to the enclosed patio in the middle picture above. I like the lattice walls – keeps the space from feeling crowded. In the third pic above, you can see the main room from above – it’s a 2 story high ceiling, with windows all around – that little ledge that marks where the lower meets the upper would be great for large art pieces, small plants, and various knick-knacks.

The two rooms that are off to the sides could be bedrooms, offices or workrooms – anything, really. The room in the first pic below also has a door opening to the outside, right across from the front patio. I like the mix of textures in that room, with the red and the rough browns. The other room is all windows on two sides, and has a great skylight. What I like best about the skylight is that it’s a window well, rather than just a flat window on the ceiling. The physical depth is a nice touch.

Last is a close-up of the front door – I am always a fan of eye-catching entrances.

Overall, I think Aya has done another great job with the Niko. The textures are good — there are a few visible seams in some of the walls (you may notice that in the window-well room above), but nothing earth-shattering. They’re only noticeable from certain angles…and possibly only to folks as persnickety as me. Be sure to swing by -abode- to see this house for yourself!

Meila Solo of buttons. sent me a copy of her first house, the On the Harbor Home. It’s a cute, simple little cottage – I think it could be used on the ground or as a skybox…as long as you’re not picky about actually being on a harbor.

I like having a cloth canopy over the porch – it gives a light, airy feeling. I did giggle that the left corner of the canopy is magically standing on its own without a support beam – yay for SL’s lack of gravity! The little flowerbox with whimsical flowers is a cute touch.

Inside is a large common room with a bedroom space divided into the back corner. Meila has included a fun skylight with streaming sunlight, which I like – streaming sunlight is always cheery to me.

Overall, I like the sort of rough feeling of the textures – as always, I would like to see more shading/depth in the wall and floor textures, just for a bit more definition and separation..that’s just something my eye is drawn to. I do like the accent of the blue wall in the main living area, and the green walls in the bedroom are really cute. Great job of breaking up an otherwise beige interior.

Hopefully you’ve heard about the Summer of Love Fair that just kicked off on Saturday. If not, check out the website here, and then get over to the fair for some great new items! (Second Spaces is not in the fair, but I am participating with my pose shop, Pulling Strings, so look for my stuff when you go. )

Barcode, by Makenzie Irling, is in the SOL Fair, and she sent me copies of her SOL offerings – the Osterham Living Room. Just a cute, basic living set: couch, chair, coffee table, and entertainment center. Nice basics to anchor a room.

The curves on the upholstered pieces are cute – so, they’re still basic pieces, but with a little flair, and I like that. I also really like the choice of accent fabrics on the pillows — a little fancy, but not too formal.

The entertainment center is a nice foundational piece – cute little display shelves on the sides for your knick-knacks, and plenty of room for your TV…OR, what would be really cute is a nice art piece hung in the middle instead of a TV. That’s how I would roll.

The International Fashion Week 2010 (IW10) will present 20 fashion shows in 4 days.
From Thursday, July 15th to Sunday, July 18th every day will have 5 fashion shows starting at 1PM SLT and ending at 6 PM SLT

Glance sim, the headquarters of GLANCE International Agency, has been made over by Chloris Hathor to host the 4 days event. The half sim presents on-site boutiques for featured designers filled with the items featured on the show and the additional style gift for shoppers.

Good morning. Stacie Pryor has released another gorgeous home from [SPRY], the get lost/get found Seaside Cottage. This is the larger, grounded version of her get lost/get found skybox, and I like it! The mix of textures, the weathered look, and the window details make me happy.

Speaking of window details – I know it’s a simple thing, but you may really not understand my love of transom windows. So, here, I will show you: <3.

French doors alone are always great – adding the transom and side window makes them even better. I like that Stacie left the front door asymmetrical, too.

Inside is a nice-sized living area that leads around to a bedroom in the back. Another simple thing that I really like is the dividing wall between the two rooms that you see as you come in the front door. I think it’s very common for SL houses to be one square room that is attached to another square room by a door…the dividing wall gives subtle definition to the bedroom, and also creates a sort of quasi-foyer in the front. Yay for foyers, and 5 points to me for using “quasi”.

There’s that bay window/window seat that I love so much, too.

In the back is the bedroom, a good size for decorating, with more french doors leading to the back patio. I love the double entrance to the back patio, from either the main living area or the bedroom – it would be great to leave both sets of doors open for a nice airy feel.

Now, clearly, I didn’t decorate for blogging purposes – I wanted to show the house alone. However, to get a great idea of how wonderfully this space can be used, check out Stacie’s blog to see what she did with it – gorgeous!

The chair is texture change (click for the menu) – 4 colors for the chair, and 12 colors for the pillow. I mixed it up a little for you in my pictures. For my personal taste, I’d like the chair to be a bit more…like, floppy cushy comfy, if that makes sense. It’s well textured though, and has very classic lines, which I appreciate. The little bookshelf really grabs my eyes — the baked shading on it is very well done. It gives an almost tangible depth to it (as much as SL allows).

You can see in the 2nd picture, above, that Mainit included a magic wand display, a nod to the magical feel of Tuli’s Journey sim. I like the simple touch of adding the open book on top of the shelf, too — gives it a little bit of a lived-in feeling.

The chair comes with a nice selection of animations, including (of course) some reading animations, and Mainit provides the books for those, as well. He also has a few of my Pulling Strings animations tucked in there, so 10 points for him. \o/

That’s the Small Covered Bridge, above. I love covered bridges, just in general…this one is cute and rustic and I <3 it. The textures are great, and I like the little details of the candles and the arched accents on the side. I may have to create an area on my sim that needs to be bridged.

Next is the Rustic Dock – it’s simple, nothing fancy, and also well textured. This would be great on a lake or pond with some super comfy seating and lots of plants and flowers.

PT also sent me his Flower Cart – really cute, nice and shabby and rustic – I’ve got this displayed on my sim now. What’s really cool is that this cart is available at Operation Squeegee, where 100% of proceeds are donated to a fundraiser for the National Wildlife Federation, to aid in recovery from the Gulf oil spill. Operations Squeegee ends July 15th (I’m so behind ), so be sure to check that out now!

I did swing by PT’s shop to see what else he has, and I adore the Tiny Church! I’m not sure if this is rezzed anywhere for viewing, but the picture looks precious.

Fleetwind Soulstar sent me a copy of her latest release from Starwind Designs – the Starwind <summer> Home. I’ve seen some of Fleetwind’s skyboxes around the blogs, but I hadn’t really checked them out. The <summer> home is the first full ground-level build from Starwind, and I think it’s really cute!

I really enjoy the color scheme – those are happy colors. The house has a simple layout, basically an open floorplan downstairs, with a little sleeping loft upstairs. The upper balcony is accessed from the loft – that would be a great place for a little cafe table & chairs, maybe a large comfy outdoor lounger. I <3 balconies.

The pics above are the view from each end of the house. I like that there is a door at each end, as well. The little alcove off to the side would be great for a sitting room, or a kitchen/dining area. I do like that there are so many windows, and floor length windows at that — but I can see that might lead to some challenges with furniture and accessories placement. Not a showstopper, by any means, though.

There’s a look at the sleeping loft – that would be totally cute with a few pieces of shabby cottage furniture…I’d love to have a nice rumpled bed pushed back into the corner by the window. The middle picture is a closer view of the side nook on the first floor – cute wall textures. The third pic is just to show the wood wall texture that’s used throughout – I really like the rough feeling of it – it’s a nice counter to the candy colors. I like the floor texture used on the first floor – would love to see a bit more edge shading to it, because I’m fanatical about that – but I really like the color and the rustic feel of it. Overall, the Starwind <summer> Home is totally cute and definitely worth taking a look, especially if you’re looking for something cheery and colorful, something that stands out a little.
