On the 26 February and 26 March 2009 IE will be running the next in our series of IE Workshops at our Birmingham studios. Oliver Westmancott, IE's Digital Services Director, is an expert in Social Media Strategy and is passionate about user engagement.

As with all things IE, the Workshop will be characterised by plain English, pragmatic advice. The style will be very conversational, informal and interactive. All attendees will be helped to make a significant and manageable step forward from their current level of expertise.

The reason for the Workshop is that IE keeps hearing from clients who are struggling to really engage with the many new and emerging Social Media opportunities. In the rush not to be left behind, some have ended up becoming 'technology chasers': Can you build me a blog? I think we need a Facebook app! Shouldn't we be Twittering like everyone else?

IE believe that the focus should remain on serving the needs of existing and new communities through technology - not on technology chasing. We believe that strategy, not technology, should take the lead.
In the morning we'll be looking at the big questions:

* Why social media?

* Where's it all leading?

* How can I utilise these new tools to engage with customers, clients, stakeholders, supporters and donors?

* Where should I start?

That will naturally lead us to look at best practice and to delve deeper into a few case studies. These won't be restricted to IE's work - we'd love to include attendees' experiments and experiences too.
In the afternoon we'll revisit those big questions and seek to help organisations build the beginnings of a Social Media Strategy, against which they can measure plans going forward and we'll look at a few very practical next steps.

There is no charge for the day, which includes coffee and a light lunch. Places are limited and available by reservation only. To reserve your place email workshop@iedesign.co.uk or call Ollie Leggett on 0800 047 0807.
More detail and timings to follow closer to the day.

If you're a complete Social Media novice and you're simply wondering what all the fuss is about take a look at http://www.iedesign.co.uk/blog/what-is-social-media/

If you're a charity you may be interested in this link to one of Oliver Westmancott's IE Blogposts on the subject of Social Media Optimisation for Charities: http://www.iedesign.co.uk/blog/social-media-optimisation-for-charities/

Plant Science provides resources to encourage creative approaches to primary and secondary science teaching.

IE presented NESTA with a set of abstracted illustrations, viewed through mist and cloud, that 'move' with the narrative of each story. IE also designed teachers' materials that sit within the Planet Science site and link to audio content.

The project provided ideal scope for IE's cross-disciplinary teams to work together on production of an innovative classroom resource - an agency strength.
Global charity Scripture Union (SU) has been working with IE since 1996 and the relationship has seen the two organisations collaborate on numerous brand, design and interactive projects. IE knew they had delivered something special for a recent branding commission from SU and so were subsequently delighted to learn this work was to appear in New Design Magazine as part of a feature on brand innovation.

SU produce Bible-based resources for children and youth in over 140 countries. SU tasked IE to evolve the existing, established 'egg' brand for their flagship print product 'Light' into a compelling 'LightLive' online brand with new identity, user interface and promotional collateral.

The new, animated identity takes the original Light 'egg' and transforms it into a shoal of candy-coloured screen-shaped 'fish' - each with its own action-scripted behavioural pattern. The project's multimedia scope allowed SU to take full advantage of IE's ability to combine beautiful design with innovative, interactive experiences.

Brand Innovation 2008 showcases some of the year's best branding and corporate identity projects. IE's LightLive identity features alongside work produced by other agencies for London Underground, Ikea and Breast Cancer Care.

IE's work on LightLive was published in issue 63 of New Design Magazine http://www.newdesignmagazine.co.uk/

Scripture Union LightLive homepage can be found at http://www.scriptureunion.org.uk/29656.id
