We have worked with Commtouch, our email securities partner, to bring you the “Internet Threats Trend Report, January 2012″. This report is a FREE download (PDF format) and provides insight into the following areas:

Facebook in 2011

Email-malware Levels Off

Unregistered Domains

Compromised Websites Hide Malware

Zombie Hotspots

Other Q4 2011 Highlights:

101 Billion: Average daily spam/phishing emails sent

209,000 Zombies: Daily Turnover

Streaming Media/Downloads: Most popular blog topic on user-generated content sites

Pharmacy Ads: Most popular spam topic (31.2% of all spam)

India: Country with the most zombies (23.5%)

Parked Domains: Website category most likely to contain malware

Report Overview

The last months of 2011 saw an increase in free-merchandise scams on Facebook. This trend report includes a study of Facebook attacks in 2011 revealing that many rely solely on social engineering while most ultimately lead victims to fraudulent affiliate marketing/survey sites.

In the fourth quarter of 2011 email attached malware levels dropped significantly from the billions of messages observed in Q3. These were replaced with numerous outbreaks of emails with malicious links. Most of these links led to compromised websites that were used to host malware scripts. Spam levels increased marginally in December but remained at a three year low.

According to a recent report from Commtouch, spammers have shifted their focus to compromised user accounts for sending spam. Commtouch attributes this change in tactics to the increased effectiveness of IP-based Anti-spam solutions. Check out the following Commtouch blog for more information on the topic:

http://blog.commtouch.com/cafe/anti-spam/new-spammer-tactics/?1pmjul11

This change in spammer focus has several potential impacts for IMail customers:

Mail servers will be seeing spam from places that might have previously been considered a trustworthy source. Thankfully, the Commtouch Anti-spam solution is there to handle these new threats so the overall impact for Commtouch protected servers should be quite low.

The change in spammer focus means that any publicly facing mail server is at greater risk for account compromisation. There are a number of things that a mail server administrator can do to help ensure IMail is immune to these kinds of attacks. Check out the following KB article for more information on this topic: http://ipswitchmsg.force.com/kb/articles/FAQ/Best-practices-to-prevent-spam-relaying-1307739584502
