How to Setup Gmail for Offline Viewing

Google Labs has now released the long awaited Offline viewing option for its famous Email client Gmail. So now you can sync your mail and read it offline if you wish. It does require you to install Google Gears found here. and it will only sync you newest 10,000 messages but that should be enough for most people. Then its pretty easy to enable the offline settings. It works in Internet Explorer and Firefox, but if you set it up on Firefox the decide to switch to IE you will need to perforn the install again and vise versa.

The first thing to do is see if you were offered it yet. Google say’s its rolling it out over the next few days so if you don’t have it yet you will be shortly.

So here goes, Head over to your inbox and click the little green beaker to get to the Labs section.

Look for Offline and click Enable.

Scroll doen to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.

You will now be taken back to your inbox. At the top of the page next to Settings you will now notice a new option called Offline. Go ahead and give it a click.

You can now click next to install offline access.

Place a check mark in the I trust this site to use Google Gears. If you click Deny and want to change you mind later you will need to sign out of Gmail then sign back in and start the process over. This will give Google permission to use your hard drive to store your mail.

Create a shortcut next so you an access Gmail offline.

Now the installation will complete.

And the Synchronizing begins, depending on the amount of mail you have and the speed of your internet connection this could take a few minutes or in my case about an hour. The good news is you can still use Gmail while your waiting.

Now you’re all set of offline use.

And now back to your setting screen.

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Conflicker, Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed.

Microsoft releases a new version of the tool on the second Tuesday of every month, and as needed to respond to security incidents. This is by no means meant to be your primary Anti-virus solution, but can be used as a supplement.

Normally this program will run once a month when Microsoft updates Windows on the second Tuesday fo the month, but you can run it whenever you want.

Here’s how.

1. Right click an empty space on your Desktop and choose.

2.Type MRT in the location field for Malicious Removal Tool. Click Next.

3. Name your your shortcut.

4. Now just double click its icon to start the tool, and click Next

5. Here’s your chance to choose a type of scan, I recommend the full scan but you can use your own judgement.

6. If you have any infections they will be listed below.

7. You can also click View detailed results of the scan and it will show what files it scanned for.

8. Then just click Finish to exit the program.

Back from vacation and ready for the New Year

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everybody. I’m looking forward to an busy and exciting 2009. Hopefully our economy will turn the corner and everyone that has had troubles last year will see improvements in their lives.

Here at KevinsCrate I have a new blog design taking shape and hopefully it will be going live soon. The end of 2008 was a very busy time at my day job trying to get all our projects finished and it kept me from working on my blogs as much as I would have liked. So with 2009 rolling in look for a lot more activity on the blog, I have a few ideas I’m going to try and if you would like to see anything new just let me know.

How to Backup your Gmail Account

Many people have switched to web mail for the ease of access and Gmail is one of the best, but unlike desktop software like Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail all your messages are now stored on Googles servers and not on your local computer. What happens if Google has a problem or deletes your account. (don’t laugh its happened) Here’a a program I found that will backup all your mail and attachments to your local computer and the backups are able to be opened in many desktop programs. The App is called Gmail Backup you can download it here.

After installing the program enter your Login info and password then choose where you want the backup stored then in the date field choose the date of your oldest email then click Backup, its that easy.

As you can see above you can also restore a backup if need be. Enjoy.

We’re trying to complete all our ongoing projects before the end of the year and that means 50 to 60 hr weeks which is a good thing I guess considering the economic down turn this country is in. How many times has this happened to you, you pick up the remote point it at the TV to change the channel and nothing happens. Do you do what I do and frantically press all the buttons hoping one will work then give it shake or two and finally give up and replace the battery’s only to find out its still not working. Since TV remotes broadcast their codes in the infrared spectrum you can’t see if it sending anything, until now.

Here’s a tip I found that lets you check to see if the remote is sending its infrared signals to your device.

Grab your trusty digital camera and turn it on.
Point your remote at the camera and press any button on the remote.
If the remote is sending codes to your device you will be able to see the flashes on your cameras display.

Here are a few tips you can use to unlock the power of Google search.

1. To use Google’s built-in calculator function, simply enter the calculation you’d like done into the search box and press enter. 1+1 enter.

2. To see the weather for many U.S. and worldwide cities, type “weather” followed by the city and state, U.S. zip code, or city and country.

3. To see current market data for a given company or fund, type the ticker symbol into the search box. On the results page, you can click the link to see more data from Google Finance.

4. To see the time in many cities around the world, type in “time” and the name of the city.

5. If you’re looking for results from Google Book Search, you can enter the name of the author or book title into the search box and we’ll return any book content we have as part of your normal web results. You can click through on the record to view more detailed info about that author or title.

Ready For a few more.

6. You can use Google to convert between many different units of measurement of height, weight, and mass among others. Just enter your desired conversion into the search box and we’ll do the rest.

7. To see a definition for a word or phrase, simply type the word “define” then a space, then the word(s) you want defined. To see a list of different definitions from various online sources, you can type “define:” followed by a word or phrase. Note that the results will define the entire phrase.

8. Google’s spell checking software automatically checks whether your query uses the most common spelling of a given word. If it thinks you’re likely to generate better results with an alternative spelling, it will ask “Did you mean: (more common spelling)?”. Click the suggested spelling to launch a Google search for that term.

9. If you’re looking for a store, restaurant, or other local business you can search for the category of business and the location and we’ll return results right on the page, along with a map, reviews, and contact information.

10. To see home listings in a given area type “housing”, “home”, or “real estate” and the name of a city or a U.S. zip code into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google Search button. Clicking the “Go” button on the results page will display details of individual homes that Google has indexed.

11. To see flight status for arriving and departing U.S. flights, type in the name of the airline and the flight number into the search box. You can also see delays at a specific airport by typing in the name of the city or three-letter airport code followed by the word “airport”.

12. To use our built-in currency converter, simply enter the conversion you’d like done into the Google search box and we’ll provide your answer directly on the results page.

13. Looking for a map? Type in the name or U.S. zip code of a location and the word “map” and we’ll return a map of that location. Clicking on the map will take you to a larger version on Google Maps.

14. You can track packages by typing the tracking number for your UPS, Fedex or USPS package directly into the search box. We’ll return results that include quick links to easily track the status of your shipment.

15. To search for U.S. patents, enter the word “patent” followed by the patent number into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google Search button.

If you have been watching the American Presidential Debates on TV you probably figured out a lot of times what they say isn’t always accurate. Here’s a website I found called FactCheck that lets you easily find out if what they are saying is factual or not.

FactCheck.org is a nonprofit website that describes its own goal as “[reducing] the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.” In its efforts, FactCheck says it is nonpartisan. It is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, and is funded primarily by the Annenberg Foundation.

Most of its content consists of rebuttals to what it considers inaccurate, misleading, or false claims by politicians. FactCheck has also targeted the misleading claims from various partisan groups.

Use Shell Folders in XP to quickly Navigate System Folders

Remember the last time you needed to access one of your system folders, maybe your Music or Pictures or any other system folder. You had to click My Computer then navigate through all that mess of folders until you found the right one.

Well here’s a way to quickly get to any system folder. Just click the Start button > Run. In the Run dialog box type shell:foldername with foldername being the folder you want to view. Example shell:My Pictures click OK.

Have you ever wondered where a certain ZIP code is located. Well here’s a cool website I found that lets you type in the ZIP code and it shows it to you visually on a map. What’s different about this site is as you type in your numbers it high lights the area of the first number then gradually zooms in on the map as you add more numbers. Check it out at Zipdecode

The more numbers you add the closer the map gets.

Try Windows Vista Without having to Install it with Vista Test Drive

If you are thinking about upgrading to Windows Vista here’s a way I found to give it a test drive out without having to install it on your computer, it will run in your browser only.

The test drive requires Internet Explorer 6 or later, a browser plug-in, and a broadband Internet connection.

A minimum 1024 x 768 screen resolution is recommended. There is no product support for the test drive but you are welcome to participate in the Microsoft Windows Vista newsgroup to share your trial experiences with others and ask for advice.

The Windows Vista version hosted in the test drive contains most of the functionality of the regular versions, but browsing the internet is not enabled.

You may notice a slight delay or pause as you experience the product. This is due to the fact that this is a hosted trial and is dependent upon your bandwidth, local machine resources, etc. This does not necessarily represent the actual experience you will have with Windows Vista if it were installed on your PC.

Open Internet Explorer and go to Windows Vista Test Drive you will be asked to install an ActiveX control later on to use the Test Drive.

In the first screen you will need to enter an Email address and your Country, any fake Email addy will do, its not checked.

The next screen wants you to take a survey, click yes or No thanks.

This screen lets you choose a category to check out.

Choose Safer and you will be given the options to Learn more about the exciting features of Vista. Click one of the icons.

Then choose Test Drive.

You will then be sent to the Vista desktop where you can explore.

These are just a few screen shots, you should use the Test Drive to get the full Vista experience.

Use Stormpulse to Track Hurricanes

With the resent rash of Tropical Stoms and Hurricane hitting the east coast of the United States I went on a search to find a better way to track them. Here’s a site I found that just might be the answer I was looking for. Check out Stormpulse.com

Here are some of the features it has.

1. You can view hurricanes and hurricane season dating back to 1851 by entering in a URL such as: http://www.stormpulse.com/hugo, or http://www.stormpulse.com/1944.

2. Cloud cover (updated every 6 hours) is available back to 2005. Coverage is still a bit spotty and you may notice some to be missing. In time (literally a matter of weeks), we will have cloud cover back to 2002.

3. The map interface is meant to be like that of Google Maps–you can click or drag your mouse to pan, and use the + or – buttons at the top-left to zoom in and out.

4. Clicking a city when a storm is active provides you with wind probabilities for that location over the next 5 days. On the other hand, clicking on a city doesn’t do anything (yet) when the storm you have selected isn’t an active cyclone. However, it will draw a yellow line and provide the distance from the selected storm (and plotpoint) and the city over which you hover your mouse.

5. You can interact with storm data at the most granular level by clicking on a plotpoint in the storm’s track. This will jump you to that point in the storm’s history.

6. We currently have issues with Internet Explorer and the site. If you want to get the most out of the site, we strongly recommend Firefox.

7. Clicking on a storm in the “2006 Storm Season Summary” should open up a historical description of the storm and pan over to the storm in the map window.

8. Satellite images update every half-hour or so. We are collecting water vapor, infrared, rgb, visible, and more, but only displaying rgb and ir for now. This will change in the near future, hopefully with a better way of organizing them as well.

9. Yahoo! News articles are brought in from around the web relating to ‘hurricanes’.

Wal-Mart Trip

You are in the middle of some kind of project around the house mowing the lawn, putting a new fence in, painting the living room, or whatever. You are hot and sweaty, covered in dirt or paint. You have your old work clothes on. You know the outfit – shorts with the hole in crotch, old T-shirt with a stain from who knows what, and an old pair of tennis shoes. Right in the middle of this great home improvement project you realize you need to run to Wal-Mart to get something to help complete the job.

Depending on your age you might do the following:

In your 20’s:
Stop what you are doing Shave, take a shower, blow dry your hair, brush your teeth, floss, and put on clean clothes. Check yourself in the mirror and flex. Add a dab of your favorite cologne because you never know, you just might meet some hot chick while standing in the checkout lane. You went to school with the pretty girl running the register.

In your 30’s:
Stop what you are doing, put on clean shorts and shirt. Change shoes. You married the hot chick so no need for much else. Wash your hands and comb your hair. Check yourself in the mirror. Still got it. Add a shot of your favorite cologne to cover the smell. The cute girl running the register is the kid sister to someone you went to school with.

In your 40’s:
Stop what you are doing. Put a sweatshirt that is long enough to cover the hole in the crotch of your shorts. Put on different shoes and a hat Wash your hands. Your bottle of Brute Cologne is almost empty so you don’t want to waste any of it on a trip to Wal-Mart. Check yourself in the mirror and do more sucking in than flexing. The spicy young thing running the register is your daughter’s age and you feel weird thinking she is spicy.

In your 50’s:
Stop what you are doing. Put a hat on, wipe the dirt off your hands onto your shirt. Change shoes because you don’t want to get dirt in your new sports car. Check yourself in the mirror and you swear not to wear that shirt anymore because it makes you look fat. The cutie running the register smiles when she sees you coming and you think you still have it. Then you remember the hat you have on is from Buddy’s Bait & Beer Bar and it says, ‘I Got Worms.’

In your 60’s:
Stop what you are doing. No need for a hat anymore. Hose the dog shit off your shoes. The mirror was shattered when you were in your 50’s. You hope you have underwear on so nothing hangs out the hole in you pants. The girl running the register may be cute, but you don’t have your glasses on so you are not sure.

In your 70’s:
Stop what you are doing. Wait to go to Wal-Mart until they have your prescriptions ready, too. Don’t even notice the dog shit on your shoes. The young thing at the register smiles at you because you remind her of her grandfather.

In your 80’s:
Stop what you are doing. Start again. Then stop again. Now you remember you needed to go to Wal-Mart. Go to
Wal-Mart and wander around trying to think what it is you are looking for. Fart out loud and you think someone called out your name. You went to school with the old lady who greeted you at the front door.

Google Launches Chrome a New Web Browser

Google launched a new web browser called Chrome yesterday, so far it seems to load web pages fasted than Firefox 3 and IE 7 and is displaying pages with no problems on every site I visited. It imported all my bookmarks without a problem. It’s a free download from Google.

One of the nice features of Chrome is the way it handles its tabs, each one is run as it’s own instance in Windows, what that means is when you look in the task manager each tab has its own entry so when you close a tab all that memory is released, also if a page crashes it won’t crash the whole program.

On the down side I miss my Firefox extensions and don’t think I can use it in place of Firefox until those features are added, But judge for yourself and check out the comic below.

Chrome also has a privacy mode, so that nothing that occurs in that window is ever logged on your computer. aka the “porn mode”

The default homepage also presents you with a kind of speed dial feature, like the one Opera has. On that page you will see your most visited webpages as 9 screenshot thumbnails. You will also see a few of your recent searches and your recently bookmarked pages, as well as recently closed tabs.

1. When you call us to have your computer moved, be sure to leave it buried under half a ton of postcards, baby pictures, stuffed animals, dried flowers, bowling trophies and Popsicle art. We don’t have a life, and we find it deeply moving to catch a fleeting glimpse of yours.

2. Don’t put your phone extension in your emails to the help desk. We need to keep an eye on the address book performance.

3. When tech support sends you an email with high importance, delete it at once. We’re just testing the public groups.

4. When a tech is having a smoke outside, ask him a computer question. The only reason why we smoke at all is to ferret out those clients who don’t have email or a telephone line.

5. Send urgent email all in uppercase. The mail server picks it up and flags it as a rush delivery.

6. When a tech tells you that computer monitors don’t have cartridges in them, argue. We love a good argument.

7. When you get a message about insufficient disk space, delete everything in the Windows directory. It’s nothing but trouble anyway.

8. When you have a tech on the phone walking you through changing a setting, read the paper. We don’t actually mean for you to do anything. We just love to hear ourselves talk.

9. When a tech tells you that he’ll be there shortly, reply in a scathing tone of voice: "And just how many weeks do you mean by shortly?" That’ll get us going.

13. When you get a message saying "Are you sure?", click on that Yes button as fast as you can. Hell, if you weren’t sure, you wouldn’t be doing it, would you?

14. When you need to change the toner cartridge, call tech support. Changing a toner cartridge is an extremely complex task, and Hewlett-Packard recommends that it be performed only by a professional engineer with a master’s degree in nuclear physics.

15. If you need to buy a computer for your daughter in college, feel free to pick our brains while we’re taking a leak. We’re good at talking shop with our dicks in our hands.

How to Stop Processes from the Command Line

When troubleshooting computer problems its helpful to see what processes are running and check their memory usage to see if a program or process is using up all your memory. There are quite a few programs out there that have memory leaks, Firefox 2 had a this issue if you left it open too long. Normally you would open the Task manager highlight the offending process and click end process. ( I believe this only works in XP Pro but I’m not sure give it a try and let me know)

But sometimes the task manager won’t open because of a virus an administrator setting or another problem. Here’s a way to view or stop processes from the command line.

Click Start > Run.
In the Run dialog box type cmd to open a command prompt.
At the command prompt type tasklist and hit enter.

Now you can see all your running processes. Find the offending one and note the PID number in the second column. them type tskill a space and the PID number and hit enter and the process will be stopped.

To see the service name also use the /svc switch. Below are more for you to try.

/m [ ModuleName ] : Specifies to show module information for each process. When a module is specified, all the processes using that module are shown. When a module is not specified, all the processes for all the modules are shown. Cannot be used with the /svc or the /v parameter.

/svc : Lists all the service information for each process without truncation. Valid when the /fo parameter is set to TABLE. Cannot be used with the /m or the /v parameter.

/v : Specifies that verbose task information be displayed in the output. Cannot be used with the /svc or the /m parameter.

/? : Displays help at the command prompt.

/s Computer : Specifies the name or IP address of a remote computer (do not use backslashes). The default is the local computer.

/u Domain User : Runs the command with the account permissions of the user specified by User or DomainUser. The default is the permissions of the current logged on user on the computer issuing the command.

/p Password : Specifies the password of the user account that is specified in the /u parameter.

/fo { TABLE | LIST | CSV } : Specifies the format to use for the output. Valid values are TABLE, LIST, and CSV. The default format for output is TABLE.

Create a Custom Control Panel in XP

Windows XP’s control panel is a very useful tool however there are so many options available its easy to loose track of the ones you use most so why not create a custom Control Panel with just your favorites. Here’s how.

Open an Explorer window ( Start > My Computer) Choose My Documents.
Click make a new folder.
Name it what ever you want. I choose Kevins Control Panel.
Right click your new folder and choose Properties. Click the Customize tab > Change Icon. Pick the Icon of your choice them click Ok.
Open your new folder. (Leave this window open.)
Click the Start then choose Control Panel.
Click switch to Classic view.
Now left click items in the Control Panel you want and drag them to your new folder.
When you’re finished drag your new folder to the Start Button, when the Menu appears drop the folder on the top area of the Menu.
Now when you click the Start button you’re new Control Panel will be at the top of your Start Menu.
And all you’re favorite Control Panel items will be in one easy to find place.

Just when you thought you finally started to get the upper hand on spam in your inbox the insidious spammers have come with a new twist. Calendar Spam, unwanted meeting requests that popup in your calendar. If it hasn’t happened to you yet, O-boy it will. Here’s what happens.

Calendar spam arrives like all other spam, as an unwanted e-mail. But the problem is it also shows up as a meeting request in your calendar. That means at the time specified in the spam message, time on your calendar will be blocked off, triggering an annoying reminder at the appointed hour.

Your spam filter may still catch it and move it to the junk mail folders. but ignoring calendar spam doesn’t make it go away. Because of the way Microsoft Outlook and Google calendars work, unanswered calendar spam will usually find its way into your calendar.

To stop Microsoft Outlook from automatically accepting meeting requests follow the steps below.

In Outlook click Tools > options.
Calendar options.
Resource scheduling.
Remove the check mark next to Automatically accept meeting requests and process cancellations.
Click Ok 3 times and your set.

Outlook Express users don’t need to worry because Express doesn’t have a calendar.

To Fix Gmail

In Gmail’s calendar go Settings > General tab.
In the “Automatically add invitations to my calendar”, Put a ◙ in No, only show invitations to which I have responded
Click save.

As much as my Yahoo mail account is a spam magnet I haven’t had that problem yet.
if anyone has drop me a comment and we’ll try and get it fixed.

Did you ever wonder how strong that password was you just created for your online bank account, Email address or your favorite new website.Well here’s a free online password checker from the folks at Microsoft, The Microsoft Password Checker. that will let you check the strength of your passwords.

Here are some tips to create a strong password.

Your passwords should be 8 or more characters in length; 14 characters or longer is ideal.
Combine letters, numbers, symbols and punctuation marks.
Use upper and lower case letters.
Use spaces or underscores.
Think of a sentence or a phrase that’s easy to remember, then substitute some numbers and symbols for some the letters.
Use the name of your favorite sports team, then the number of you favorite player then add the last 3 letters of the website you will use the password on. That way you can have an easy to remember password that will change with each use.

Example: steelers35kevinscrate = sTe_3#ate

I have been using a similar phrase for sometime now and its. It easy for me to remember and it changes with every place I use it

Or you can use a password generator like the one from GRC.com Very secure but just try to remember it. Or you can choose a Password Manager and there are hundreds of them on the web. I like RoboForm and KeePass

Password strategies to avoid:

Avoid using your login name.
Avoid sequences or repeated characters. “12345678,” “222222,” “abcdefg,”
Avoid using Birthday’s of you family.
Avoid dictionary words in any language.
Avoid using the same password everywhere.

And one more thing keep your passwords SECRET

Click on the Blue test for more info and how to fix any issues it finds.

This can be very frustrating when using multiple monitors or sometimes just by dragging windows around your screen, you get one to the edge of your display and then can’t seem to grab it in the right place to move it back where you want it. Then after 15 minutes of cussing you give up and reboot.Well here’s a way to prevent you from rebooting to get that sucker back inline.

Right click the applications tab in the Task-bar and select Move, then use your arrow keys to get the window back into view.

PC vendors often customize the System Properties screen to show off their logo and to add support info you can readily see,but if you built your own computer or build them for other people you can customize your System Properties screen to show your logo and support information or anything else you want. Here’s how.

To Create the Logo:

Fire up your favorite photo editing program and create a 180 x 114 pixel image.
Customize it however you like, add a graphic, text or whatever.
Name it oemlogo.bmp Make sure you save it as a .bmp and not anything else.
Save it in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder.

To create the Support information:

Create a new Notepad file in the same folder.
Name it oeminfo.ini make sure the extension is .ini and not .txt
Using the below format write anything you want after the = sign.

[General]
Manufacturer=
Model=

[Support Information]
line1=
line2=

If you need to add an extra line just type line3= then your message. (make sure you save the file as an .ini or this won’t work.

Enable the Hibernation Button in the Shut-Down Dialog Box

When you go to shut down your computer you are given the options to Standby, Restart and Turn off. Putting you computer into Standby mode reduces your power consumption. The amount of electricity used by the computer in standby mode is just a trickle, just enough to keep the memory alive so that open programs and documents are stored without data loss. The primary power saving is achieved by turning off the system drives, monitor, and other items.

The Downside is that information that is currently in computer memory is not saved to your hard disk. If you have an interruption in power, information in memory will be lost. Because of this, you may want to Put your computer into Hibernation instead, but your not given that option when you click Start > turn off computer. Here’s a way to add it to your Shutdown Dialog box.

Putting your computer into The hibernate feature has several benefits. When you use the hibernate feature, your programs and open windows do not have to be shut down or closed. The state of your computer is preserved while the computer is in hibernation. Additionally, the startup time to resume from hibernation is typically about 30 percent less than when you start the computer from the shutdown state. After the computer resumes from hibernation, your Windows desktop, data, and programs are restored. You can quickly return to where you left off. Additionally, because all your data is saved to the computer’s hard disk drive when you put the computer in hibernation, you reduce the risk of losing your work in progress.

When you use the hibernate feature, the computer does not use additional power. A desktop computer typically draws a small amount of power when it is shut down or when it is in hibernation. This amount is typically about 3 watts. A portable computer does not draw additional power from the computer’s battery when the computer is in hibernation or when it is shut down. (From Microsoft)

First make sure Hibernation is enabled on your system.

Click Start >Control panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options. Click the Hibernate tab and put a check mart in enable Hibernation and click ok.

This tip does require a Registry edit so if your uncomfortable in the Registry, simply pressing the “Shift key” while in the Shutdown Dialog box will give you the option of entering Hibernation, but will remove the Standby option.

If your ready to edit the Registry here’s the steps. First create a restore point to back up the Registry.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindows
3. Right-click Windows, point to New, and then click Key.
4. In the New Key #1 box, type System if it’s not already there, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click System, point to New, and then click Key.
6. In the New Key #1 box, type Shutdown, and then press ENTER.
7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
8. In the New Value # 1 box, type ShowHibernateButton, and then press ENTER.
9. Right-click ShowHibernateButton, and then click Modify.
10. In the Value data box, type 1, leave the default Hexadecimal option selected, and then click Ok.
11. Quit Registry Editor.

Here’s what your Shutdown Dialog will look like after the fix.

9. George Bush virus: Doesn’t do anything, but you can’t get rid of it until November.

10. Government economist virus: Nothing works, but all your diagnostic software says everything is fine.

11. Ollie North virus: Turns your printer into a document shredder.

12. PBS virus: Your PC stops every few minutes to ask for money.

13. Politically correct virus: Never calls itself a “virus”, but instead refers to itself as an “electronic microorganism”.

14. Right To Life virus: Won’t allow you to delete a file, regardless of how old it is. If you attempt to erase a file, it requires you to first see a counselor about possible alternatives.

15. Ted Kennedy virus: Crashes your computer but denies it ever happened.

16. Warren Commission virus: Won’t allow you to open your files for 75 years.

Type w32tm /resync dialog box and press enter and your done.

Now the longer way.

Right click your Clock in the system tray.
Choose adjust Time and Date.
Click the Internet Time tab.
Choose the server you want to use.
Click the Update Now button and hope you don’t get a timeout error.
Click Ok to finish.

According to Chris Keroack [MSFT] moderator on the Microsoft TechNet forms SP3 will be delayed because of a compatibility issue with Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS)

Looks like there’s a bug in the ointment.

In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web.

To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to the web.

We are also testing a fix, and will make it available once that process is complete. Once they have installed the fix, Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers should be able to run both service packs.

Until then, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.

It is still available as a download to TechNet subscribers though, and here’s a link I found on their update servers, So if you don’t want to wait for it to be pushed to you Get it here.

Home users should be ok to install it. Its only business running RMS systems that will have problems.

Here’s a quick tip to take the strain off your aging eyes when viewing your iTunes collection. I never really paid much attention to that option before, But when I was setting up my new media center computer connected to a 61″ TV I could barely see the text from the couch so I gave it a try and it works like a charm.

1. In iTunes, click Edit > Preferences.

2. Under the General tab you can select Large for the option for Source Text to enlarge the text on the navigation bar. Then you can also do the same thing for Song Text to enlarge the text on the song side.

Close All Open Programs with Enditall 2

Whenever you install new software one of the first thing they tell you to do is to shut down all open programs, Likewise when you run your disk defragmenter or scandisk you need to close all open programs. Most computers today have a dozen or more open programs and process running all the time. Shutting them down manually is a tedious and time-consuming endeavor. That’s where Enditall 2 comes in to save the day.

EndItAll 2 lists all the programs running on your system, and lets you decide which ones to close down. The processes necessary for basic system operation are protected from termination. From the remaining processes, you can choose which to close, which to kill (close down forcibly), and which to protect. Once you know which files you want to shut down, you can configure EndItAll for automatic action via script or batch file. This is useful for backups and defrags during off-hours. Options let you block power management and the screen saver during operation.

The yellow lock icon means that Enditall can close or kill the process
A red lock icon indicates a protected process that cannot be killed or closed.
A lock icon with the X and the green border indicates processes that can be closed but not killed.
A skull with a red border allows to kill the process but not to close it.

Here’s another scenario:
You want to play a demanding video game or run a processor intensive program like Photoshop or do some video editing or transcoding, the more programs you have open the slower the process will be. Use Enditall to shut-um down first.

Vista SP1 was released to manufacturing today 2-4-08 Expect to see a customer release in early March.

From Microsoft:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released to manufacturing today and will start being available to customers in March, starting with Microsoft Volume Licensing customers. Windows Vista SP1 includes quality improvements that help enhance reliability, security and performance. SP1 also includes changes focused on improving the performance of Windows Vista in areas that impact the customer experience the most. For instance, with SP1, copying or moving files around your PC, your home network or your corporate network should now be much faster — up to 50% faster in some scenarios (according to our internal tests). In addition, on many kinds of hardware, resuming a Windows Vista-based PC from sleep is faster on Service Pack 1.

Here’s the timing for SP1 availability for current Windows Vista users:

In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so.

In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience.
The remaining languages will RTM in April.

If your computer is running a little wonkly lately, or your getting Blue screens of death (BSOD’s) you may have some System files that are corrupted. If so checking your system files may be a good idea.

To open the System File Checker follow the directions below, have your Windows install CD ready, you may be asked for it.

Click the Start button.
Choose Run.
Type sfc /scannow in the Run box.
Sit back and relax for a while, this may take an hour or more.

Password Selection Rules

In order to increase the security of all company computing facilities, and to avoid the possibility of unauthorized use of these facilities, new rules are being put into effect concerning the selection of passwords. All users of computing facilities are instructed to change their passwords to conform to these rules immediately.

RULES FOR THE SELECTION OF PASSWORDS:

1. A password must be at least six characters long, and must not contain two occurrences of a character in a row, or a sequence of two or more characters from the alphabet in forward or reverse order. Example: HGQQXP is an invalid password. GFEDCB is an invalid password.

2. A password may not contain two or more letters in the same position as any previous password. Example: If a previous password was GKPWTZ, then NRPWHS would be invalid because PW occurs in the same position in both passwords.

3. A password may not contain the name of a month or an abbreviation for a month. Example: MARCHBC is an invalid password. VWMARBC is an invalid password.

4. A password may not contain the numeric representation of a month. Therefore, a password containing any number except zero is invalid. Example: WKBH3LG is invalid because it contains the numeric representation for the month of March.

5. A password may not contain any words from any language. Thus, a password may not contain the letters A, or I, or sequences such as AT, ME, or TO because these are all words.

6. A password may not contain sequences of two or more characters which are adjacent to each other on a keyboard in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal direction. Example: QWERTY is an invalid password. GHNLWT is an invalid password because G and H are horizontally adjacent to each other. HUKWVM is an invalid password because H and U are diagonally adjacent to each other.

7. A password may not contain the name of a person, place, or thing. Example: JOHNBOY is an invalid password.

Because of the complexity of the password selection rules, there is actually only one password which passes all the tests. To make the selection of this password simpler for the user, it will be distributed to all supervisors. All users are instructed to obtain this password from his or her supervisor and begin using it immediately.

Here’s a way to showoff your precious pictures with your very own screensaver. First decide what picture you want to use, this will be the hardest part. Then copy then to a different folder of your choice. The reason I say copy them to a different folder is so you can display only the picture you want instead all the thousands you have.

So here we go.

Right click an empty space on your desktop and choose Properties.
Click the Screensaver tab.
Use the drop down menu under screensaver’s to choose My Pictures Sideshow.
Click the setting tab and browse to where you copied your picture to. you can also setup the other options.
Click Ok, then back on the display Properties page you can preview your masterpiece and choose your wait time.
Click OK when your finished.

All you need to do is replace name with the song or artist you want to find. In many cases you can download the song to your computer and bam free music. ( always scan the files before you open them with a good anti-virus first.) You can also change “mp3″ to avi to find movies.

Add An Onscreen Keyboard to Win XP

Windows XP comes with a virtual onscreen keyboard that you can use in an emergency if your regular one fails, but only if you have a shortcut to it that you can click with your mouse. This has saved my bacon once already so I thought I’d pass it along. Now I’m not saying its a pleasure to use but in an emergency it will do. To check it out do the following:

Click the Start button > Run
Type OSK into the Run dialog box.

To make a shortcut icon on your desktop to the on–screen keyboard:

Right–click the desktop.
Point to New, and then click Shortcut.
Type osk, click Next.
Type a name for the shortcut, and then click Finish.

That’s it! When you need it, the shortcut to the on–screen keyboard utility is right on your desktop. Now if your keyboard goes kaput you can just click the Keyboard icon and finish what you were working on.

It happens to almost everyone, you use Add and Remove programs to uninstall a program and next time you go back the deleted program is still listed. The most likely cause is a incomplete uninstall or a badly written uninstaller. Here’s a way to get rid of that entry for good. All you need to do is a quick Registry edit.

Always create a System Restore Point before editing the Registry, as a save guard.

Click the Start Button and choose Run.
In the Run Dialog type in Regedit and click Ok.
In the Registry editor Navigate to the following key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Uninstall
In the uninstall folder is all the programs that are listed in the Add and Remove programs utility. Click each entry and look in the right hand pane for the Display Name and under Data value will be the name of the program.
Search for the offending program and and right click its folder and choose delete.
Close the Registry editor and your done.
