You might be surprised to find Dr. Martens on here, but truth be told, we were just as surprised when we came across these suede chukkas from our favorite brand back in the late 80’s. More than anything, with all the options for chukkas this season, those colored welts and how they’re matching up with the supple suede uppers are straight killing it. Dr. Martens wouldn’t be our first choice, but the whole contemporary feel of mixing a classic Dr. Marten boot with a classic desert boot is the business. To top it all off, you got the trademark air cushioned sole and, it’s moderately priced. Available here.

It’s sort of a mixed bag when it comes to what brands we follow religiously and which ones we don’t. With everybody always looking to drop the news of the newest collection with previews of the entire line, some quality pieces can sometimes get overlooked in the process. So while this probably isn’t the first time you’ve spotted this outdoor-inspired zip-up hooded sweatshirt from Supreme, we feel it deserves a quick shout out on its own. So here it is – the shout out. Love the understated-ness of it all with the small Supreme zip for the chest pocket that’ll let ‘em all know what you’re about. Available here.

Chances are you feel the same way about leopard print as we do. The only problem is, when you’re killing it on every single piece in the outdoor clothing game this season like Kazuki Kuraishi for Adidas Originals by Originals and Neighborhood, you have to keep your preconceived notions on the back burner. Much like the previous releases, the jacket is a true outdoor piece, being fully waterproof thanks to Diaplax fabric and fully taped seems. The only thing missing is some added insulation for windchill days, but perhaps the leopard print is there on the sides to have you thinking about warmer climates. Available here.

We were having a debate today about bags and whether or not men should be switching up their bags with the seasons (i.e. something waterproof for Spring, a lighter cotton or nylon for Summer and heavier materials such as tweed and wool for Winter). We didn’t come to a consensus, but something about this wool overnight bag from Reiss screams Fall/Winter luxury. Fresh off our discovery of Reiss’ Aston bag, this one dubbed the Windsor, features herringbone wool, leather trimmings, large leather flap and nickel hardware. Arguably, the best one we’ve seen yet. While we find most of Mulberry’s selections for men more on the feminine side, we were able to find a few pieces from the Mulberry for Apple collection that more easily pass as unisex. Taking some familiar models and then adapting them to Apple’s best products, they just might be the most luxurious options available. From left, the popular Brynmore for the 15″ Macbook Pro in oak, natural leather; the slimmer Seth for 15″ Macbook Pro in chocolate, natural leather; the Drew sleeve with Mulberry Tree fabric lined interior, and Bayswater sleeve in soft, buffalo leather. With the ever growing options for accessories for Apple products, it’s great to see British luxury brands having a go at it with finer materials. We haven’t used wallpaper in forever, but it’s pretty tough to resist these designs from one of our favorite designers and heritage (18th Century to be exact) hand printed wallpaper company, Cole & Son.  The Vivienne Westwood for Cole & Son wallpapers are all based on signature designs from her fashion collections such as the iconic Squiggle print from the Autumn-Winter 81/82 Pirate collection and the more recent Cut-Out Lace from the Spring-Summer 07 I am Expensiv collection. Explains Westwood, “It is good when my ideas get carried over into other artistic media. This collection is a perfect opportunity to be able to work with a heritage company like Cole & Son and to see my ideas from fashion translated into the world of interiors and wallpaper”. Massachusetts’ Penfield is out with a new color option, the best by far, for their classic Stapleton jacket. Unlike most down insulated jackets, this one sports a more modern fit, slimmer than your average, with a classic look that’s still fresh. Since we’re talking Penfield we’ll break it down technically: Teflon coated 60/40 cotton nylon, 255g of premium 80/20 goose down, water resistant and windproof fabric, leather shoulder yoke, two front traditionally shaped pockets, leather Penfield arm patch, two lower zip pockets with leather zip pulls. Yes, its navy not purple. Don’t sleep, limited to 50, available here.

Mostly known, in our eyes, for their killer crested blazer and more recently, their shoe collaborations with Converse and Common Projects, United Bamboo is out with this dope wool zip up. It’s thick, it’s made in Japan, it’s got gauge knit rows. For whatever reason, we can just feel Miho Aoki and Thuy Pham underground influence in this piece. Both are actively involved in the underground art and music scene and are often taking on collaborative art projects like artist-designed T-shirts printed with provocative cartoons or compilation CDs produced by indie music label United Acoustic Recording. We found this one at one of our favorite online shops here, but there’s a chance you could find some place other than Japan at a stockist nearest you.

Even though we’ve been giving a lot of love to totes and carryalls as of late, we’ve always had a soft spot for backpacks for their practicality and the fact that sometimes, sneakers and totes just don’t mix. Out of every backpack available, the Visvim 22 Litre has been the truth in terms of style and its technical aspects. While the model isn’t entirely new (obviously 2L larger than the 20L), sometimes it’s just good for a revisit, we mean, what other brand has the foresight to make the lower section of the bag inclined towards you, so that heavier objects move closer to your back to reduce the load? On top of that, the bag is also luxurious with the bottom of the bag and handle covered with soft elk leather. We’re still partial to the previously released red version, but this new gray color is straight fire. Available here.

Ma. Strum designer Donrad Duncan has long held a fascination with the work of Massimo Osti, of Stone Island and CP Company fame.  With the blessing of Lorenzo Osti, Massimo’s son, Duncan has dipped into the Osti archives to create his fall/winter collection of jackets and coats.  The designs hew closely to the military stylings of Osti, and also share his flair for experimenting with fabrics and attention to detail.  Duncan, who has designed for Victorinox, has created pea coats, officer jackets, anoraks, and technical jackets with features like removable faux fur collars, asymmetrical zips, heated liners, and detachable logo tabs.  These are completely functional, customizable designs with just the right amount of detail.  They have been moving quickly, but the various styles in different sizes are still available here, here, and here.

Started last year, the Creative Recreation Collection is the Italian handmade high-end luxury line of CR Footwear. While this year’s collection features some interesting silhouettes atypical of the brands’ typical design, the wrinkled-leather Turino is by far our favorite. While we’re finding some of the design cues similar to that of Common Projects, we can’t help but love the smooth Italian leather uppers, the hidden laces and Goodyear welt construction, which allows for a constant flow of air to flow through the sneaker. Whether or not we’d drop the cash for these, or just go with a pair of CP’s, you do have to applaud Creative Recreation for a successful release. The entire Collection is available at Barneys.

Random Fairey news: Doing his best James Frey, Shepard Fairey recently reversed his previous position on the reference photo used for his Obama-HOPE poster. Fairey now admits to providing false sources, deleting evidence and says it was indeed the Mannie Garcia photograph (as the AP has alleged all along) that was used in creating the poster. While the exact identity of the photo was so vehemently contested, it also distracts from the essence of the case between Fairey and the AP – the right to fair use and artistic freedoms. Still, the fact Fairey went to such great lengths to cover something up leaves us with a sour taste in our mouths.

Yet despite all the hoopla, Shepard Fairey continues work releasing new prints like this Spider Lily. Based on the original fine art piece created for the Rock Hill Preservation, the all-green print is somewhat of a different direction for Fairey. Not only is it predominantly green, but it is also void of any blatant political messaging. All proceeds from this limited edition signed-numbered print will go to charity. Nice Collective designers Joe Haller and Ian Hannula were doing the broken-in, deconstructed feel long before it was so trendy that you couldn’t walk five steps in your local shopping center without seeing faux dirt and rips all over everything.  And, first to it or not, they’ve always done it in a more whimsical, less brash fashion than your average cookie cutter brands.  I first came across their uniquely-featured designs in the late 90’s at Villains in San Francisco and have kept an eye on their work ever since.  This season they’ve brought us two fresh cardigan designs that are worth a look.  The first is a hooded model in silver that features a contrasting placket and trim, along with elbow patches and reverse stitching.  The second is made of 100% merino wool in khaki with purple striping, and features a ribbed high collar as well as ribbing at both the waist and sleeves.  Both feature common Nice Collective details like contrast stitching and ornate buttons.  Available here.

Having just picked up a pair of LunarGlides, we can attest to the fact that they are most definitely the best sneaker on the market for running. Extremely lightweight, to the point of ridiculousness, they also have the looks to rival their technological advances. Nike has decided to give us sneakerhead runners something to drool over with the release of this City Exclusives Pack; a collection of city specific design details over a simplified monotone black upper. Each of the three selected cities – NYC, Chicago, San Francisco – gets a color, highlighted on the laces, heel, tongue and insole. While the Chi-town colorway features a clean Baltic Blue for both the womens and mens models, the NYC version is Mets inspired – Royal Blue for womens and Orange for men. Rounding out the trio is San Francisco, the city representing the Nike Women’s Marathon, in a vibrant Hot Red with a custom NWM insole graphic. Get yourself a pair here and get running.

This right here is your neighbors’ worst nightmare: a 125 Watt, tube amplified, 28-element iPod speaker. Measuring about 3ft x 4ft, the Wall of Sound by Swedish brand Brothers might personify the definition of both overkill and awesomeness. Made for those of us who disregard safe levels of noise, the WOS peaks out at an headache inducing 95dB, about the same noise-level you’d get from putting a running chainsaw to your ear. The tube amplifier pushes silky smooth tone from 28 elements, each housed individually in handcrafted boxes to maximize clarity and balance. The Wall of Sound is available for pre-order online, or at Brothers’ flagship in Stockholm. Just a warning though, weighing in at 220lbs, your UPS bill might be as massive as this loudspeaker.

Some food for thought today as just the other day we were discussing the ever growing number of releases of the Jordan 1. On it’s own the sneaker is classic, but we had to ask if releasing different colorways and different materials was a disservice to one of the most iconic sneakers of all time. More than anything, the last thing we want is to have the Jordan 1 go by way of the AF-1, AM90, 180 and ‘95. That having been said, we feel somewhat guilty for loving these new releases. We’re not sure what we love the most; the retro vibe, the Dark Obsidian shiny patent material, or the minimalist-monotone colorway.  Either way, we’re into the use of patent leather that adds a certain elegance to an otherwise very rough-looking silhouette. We’ve been finding a lot of the releases by SHIRT, a secondary line of clothing by Japanese fashion powerhouse Comme des Garçons, really dope this season. Especially this modern take on the classic design of the Duffle coat which is rather different in terms of styling, colors and patterns of most of the other SHIRT offerings.  True to tradition, the coat sports big oversized pockets and hood, button tab cuffs and wooden toggle and jute fastening. Only the outer is made of 100% padded nylon, giving the jacked a sleek, straight design and a truly contemporary look. The Padded Nylon Duffle coat is available in Blue and Khaki here and here.

Really liking the modern takes on traditional design that are going on with this new Trench Coat by Japanese/Parisian label Resistance. Now the gabardine trench is a staple in anyone’s wardrobe, yet it’s extremely rare to find one as unique looking as this. Tartan-colored buttons line the font, cuffs, and epaulettes in a symmetric pattern that really gives this long-flowing coat character. Other interesting details include deep hip pockets, and a bright red polyester liner. A wonderful interpretation of a classic and timeless gabardine piece. Available here.

Dunderdon is to workwear as Corey Arnold is to commercial fishing. The Gothenburg-based brand is renowned for functional and understated design, and this season’s collection is no exception to the rule. They really do justice to the current workwear trend, and with the added bonus of solid craftsmanship they deserve credit for making ‘essentials’ essential again. In the same vein, photographer Corey Arnold has made a name for himself by uncovering a wealth of stunning imagery in the otherwise unglamorous lifestyle of commercial fishing. The Alaskan native, himself a commercial fisherman, has earned critical acclaim for a body of work that is rich in both composition and personality. One look at his portfolio and you will find yourself wanting to hang it all up and hit the open seas. An account of Arnold’s work process – a thoroughly engaging read as told by the artist – is up on Dunderdon’s Workspace page, while his ‘Fish-Work Bering Sea’ gallery is on display at the brand’s NYC store in SoHo.
