Most fans attend the game for the rivalry on the field but if you know this event by its previous moniker - “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” - then you may be more concerned with the sips, snacks, and styles off the field.

If you fall into that category - this post is for you. AND although I’m a Gator girl at heart, we’re sharing an unbiased take on various ways to elevate your Game Day wear regardless of whether you shout Go Gators, Glory Glory, or “GET ME A COCKTAIL!”

Let the Holiday Season Begin!

I know, I know...it's not even Thanksgiving yet. If you feel that way about the holidays then you may want to navigate away from this page, because I am allowing none of that nonsense here. I. LOVE. THE. HOLIDAYS. Sorry, I'm not sorry. I like to celebrate for longer than 25 days. Or two weeks. Or whatever you grinches feel is an acceptable time frame for holiday shenanigans. 

In my mind, the holiday season started November 1st, but this weekend is my official kick-off celebration!

Treat Every day Like Christmas

I’d love to throw a giant party each year to get a festive start on the season, but why do that when my buddies at the St. Johns Town Center do it for us all? My official holiday season begins after the BIG fancy tree at the St. Johns Town Center is all LIT up and ready for visitors. So as of this Saturday night, the holidays and the Town Center are OPEN AND READY FOR SHOPPING!

If you’re local to the North Florida area, make plans to attend the 2019 Holiday Spectacular this weekend at the St. Johns Town Center! The action starts at 2 pm EST and it's fun for the entire family.

Santa, I Know Him! 

Although Elf himself has yet to make an appearance, each year we get to hang out with some pretty amazing people. The hostess with the mostess this year is none other than Catalina from 97.9 KISS FM and the headline musical act is MAX. Santa will, of course, make an appearance during the evening and you never know who else will be there!

Buddy The Elf, What's Your Favorite Color?

My family and I attend this event every year and always have a blast. If you have young ones who can't stay out late for the headline entertainment and Santa’s arrival, no worries. Bring them for the afternoon to try out some of the fun festivities.

The all-day event will feature holiday-themed activities and family-friendly fun, culminating with a performance by MAX at 7 pm on the main stage and the lighting of the tree by Santa Claus and fireworks display at 8 p.m.

Family activities will include a silent DJ experience, holiday photo booth, games, giveaways, interactive hot chocolate station, and an ornament decorating station. The Kid’s Zone will feature letters to Santa, jugglers, caricature artists, costumed characters and more.

In addition, St. Johns Town Center retailers will offer holiday shopping opportunities, in-store promotions, and specials throughout the weekend. The 14th annual Holiday Spectacular is sponsored by Toyota, OneBlood, AVL Productions, and 97.9 KISS FM.

Please keep in mind, patience is a virtue. Yes, it will be busy. Yes, you'll have to spend more than .8 seconds to park. And yes, there will be a crowd of other festive folks. BUT. IT'S. SO. WORTH. IT.

How to Park Efficiently and Cost-Effectively

If parking and walking are an issue there are several easy solutions.

1) The Town Center has valet. Use it. They rock.
2) They also have shuttles. I'm dropping a link to the shuttle information here. If you feel like you've parked so far and can't walk to the middle area where the tree is located, then call them. They will come and pick you up. FOR FREE. I'm serious. Call 904.610.9182.

Light It Up

While you’re out with the family you should plan to visit some of my favorite town center spots. You’ll want to arrive early to secure your prime viewing location, but when you’re hungry my new favorite place to grab delicious, but healthy food is True Food Kitchen.

If you’re looking to grab a spirited holiday cocktail, your best bet is to visit the bar at Maggiano’s! It’s close to all the action and their team spends all year training for this one crazy night!

What to Wear 

If you're into fashion and wondering about the attire for this weekend’s festive events...it's festive casual. I always dress up just a little because it's what I do, but wear what makes you happy and comfortable. Or arrive a few minutes early, survey the crowd and pop into your favorite Town Center store to grab something new to fit the vibe. (Listen, you're here. I'll show you how to spend money. No problem. Insert the cash money eye emoji here.)

What to Wear When the Pumpkin Patches are Popping Up but So Are the Temps…

It’s basically Halloween so we should (or feel like we should) be snuggled up in sweaters and booties, but here in Florida, it’s still hotter than asphalt at noon in the dead of summer. Don’t try to convince me I should wear turtlenecks, boots, and scarves. I don’t want to die of a heat stroke. Our fake fall will roll around late in the year, but for now, it’s time to own up to the fact that fall fashion isn’t our forte in Florida.

We have to be more creative. We have to think outside the patch.

Listen, I’d love to tell you it makes all the sense in the world to run your little booty out to a big-box retailer and stock up on trench coats, OTK boots, and all things velvet, but this is not the life we live. We live in the South where it’s hotter than h*ll and half of Georgia 80% of the year. Our style-savvy comes from our ability to transition summer styles right into our fake fall.

Fall Colors, Not Fall Fabrics

This time of year is tough. I wake up thinking about how to look like an autumnal dream but realize it’s too damn hot for a penguin to just be walking around. (Ok, not exactly the point, but any Adam Sandler reference works for me.) Summer styles are still acceptable, just start to work in deeper hues and quintessential fall colorways. Think yellow, burgundy, olives, pumpkins, navy, and brown. Two of my favorite recent rentals from Rent the Runway are both darker shades perfectly suitable for this time of year but in styles and fabrics that still work in the southern climate.

Cooler Weather Accessories, Not Cool Weather Layers

I love to layer, but layering when it is still 85 outside is tough no matter how you layer them. Enter fall-friendly accessories. Keep the same color principle in mind, but swap out your open-toe sandals for a fun bootie. Toss the straw bag back in the summer closet and tag in your suede bags. Exchange your brightly colored belt for a more neutral, warm shade.

Dress Up, Not Dress Down

Dresses. The ultimate lazy way to look put together! But in fall, it’s time to step it up. Even though it’s still warm grab a denim jacket, flannel top, or moto jacket to toss over your shoulders. Every now and again we get lucky and there is a slight breeze at night so we can pretend to actually be cold and not just carry these suckers for looks. This time of year is my favorite time to push the style boundary also. Toss on a t-shirt under a fun slip dress. Pair a crisp button-down under a sheath dress at work. It’s still layering, but not death wish layering…ya know?

Show Off Your Booty(ies)

Fall in Florida is a great time to bust out all your mini boots. I like to call them mini boots because I just do, but technically they are booties. Anything not knee-high or over the knee are still viable options to wear with shorts. dresses, trousers, leggings, and whatever other bottoms you use to cover your booty this time of year.

Bottom Line

Dress how you feel comfortable, but don’t dress basic for the sake of being on-trend for fall. Below I’m linking my favorite hot girl fall items from Rent the Runway. (In the south, every season is hot girl season, for the record.)

Anyone already planning to attend the Women’s Show is welcome at the runway shows! They are free to attend with show admittance. Just make plans to arrive on time or you’ll miss the fun. It’s almost summer which means your month has been packed full of birthday, graduation, and holiday celebrations. With Memorial Day festivities kicking off tomorrow, I realized I had yet to remind you of the fabulous celebration happening this month at the St. Johns Town Center during Military Appreciation Month.

Any day and month that allows our community to come together and reflect on what Military personnel, veterans, and their families give to our nation is most definitely an excuse to celebrate. So Military Appreciation Month and Military Spouse Appreciation Day (or days plural because we all know one day is never enough celebration for this lady!) merriment is and has been in full swing in my household for the month. 

How I Celebrate Military Appreciation Month 

Honestly, do you really have to ask yourself that question? If you know me or read the blog you are well aware that I celebrate everything the same way.

WITH SHOPPING. A GLASS OR 3 OF WINE. AND DELICIOUS FOOD. 

In order to celebrate with all three simultaneously I visit my favorite destination in Jacksonville - The St. Johns Town Center.  Where you can partake in all of the above activities, pretty much all of the time.

Full disclosure...we all know I LOVE my St. Johns Town Center team! No one has ever had to force me to shop. In fact, I was going out of my way to shop there long before I even lived in Jacksonville. (Seriously...ask my Dad. He can attest to the fact that my Mom and I used to sneak up to the Town Center on the weekend to do some "light" shopping even when he told us not to! Sorry, we're not sorry Dad!) So combine my favorite people, my favorite foods and drinks, and my favorite activities IN ADDITION to Military Appreciation celebrations and savings this month and I am one happy, overly festive fashion blogger.

Military Appreciation Month Festivities

I was honored to work with the St. Johns Town Center on this post because if they were to try to tell you all the amazing things they are doing to support, honor, and celebrate our local military members you'd never have time to shop. So I'm tooting the horn for them below by highlighting my favorite ways they are showing love to my family this month and also how they are showing love, appreciation, and admiration for all military personnel,  families and veterans in North Florida. 

Reserved Parking for Military Veterans 

(By the way, keep reading for ALL the info on the parking program...don't get angry over the parking photos. I took them for illustration and drama for the post. I know I am NOT a Veteran.)

First and foremost, let’s start in order here. What’s the first thing you do when you visit the St. Johns Town Center? If you guessed, park your car you’d be right. (I bet you were thinking I’d say RUN TO DILLARD’S to grab ALL THE CLOTHES…which is typically how I start my shopping trips there, but this post includes more logical information than my typical shenanigans so stay focused for once.)

Why talk about parking? Sure, it’s not a sexy topic, but we’ve all been shopping during peak times like weekends and holidays and you may have spent more than a split second deciding where to park your vehicle. With this incredible offering, military personnel, veterans, or family of either of those groups with a valid military ID can take advantage of prime parking spots. The St. Johns Town Center has reserved, preferred parking spots located near Nordstrom and Cantina Laredo but they are first come, first serve. (Look for these signs you see pictured above!) So park early and shop often!

Bring Your Military ID and Save

If you didn’t already grab one to start saving this month, make sure to visit the mall management office at St. Johns Town Center and pick up a Military Savings Guide. This pamphlet is your pass to additional savings at your favorite shops, restaurants, and retailers all year long; not just during Military Appreciation month. From Aerie to Art of Shaving, Kendra Scott to Kilwins, M Shack to Maggiano’s and even Tiffany’s, some of your most frequented stops are offering military personnel, veterans, and their families additional savings (some restrictions apply so read the fine print, babes).

Bring your military ID and stop by the management office to claim your pass. If I didn't mention your preferred retailer, that doesn’t mean they aren’t involved. Click here to visit the St. Johns Town Center page that features additional information on all the stores offering military specials and discounts.

Tech Savvy Shoppers Rejoice - There’s an App for That

Whew...I get it. I just hit you with a LOT of info and you are most definitely thinking you need GO TO THE MALL NOW! (Slow down though...they are open often, but not 24/7 so if you're reading this at 3 am because my Mom told you to read it, then thanks Mom, but you have to wait until they open again tomorrow.) Speaking of which, click here for store hours so you know what time to set your shopping alarm. 

Alarm set? Good...I'm about to share some secrets with you on a few tech savvy ways to remember all of the features and offerings you can take advantage of, not only during Military Appreciation Month but year round.

If you're wondering how I stay in the loop on all things happening at my favorite Simon malls, I use the Simon app. Because let's be honest, although the St. Johns Town Center is clearly numero uno in my heart and also my wallet, as a military family, we've had to adopt other plazas as our second shopping spots for times when our home base isn't Jacksonville. The app is free to download on any iOS or Android mobile device and will be your hand held shopping guide if you're new or just need a refresher. (If you ever have data trouble, well there are several stores in the Town Center that can assist, but you're also welcome to call me...I'm a St. Johns Town Center connoisseur and I love to shop so I'll be there like your real life Simon app but with more jokes and definitely more fitting room opinions.)

Life in Jacksonville AGAIN

This is your weekly status update: I am alive. The mold has not taken over my life. Well, actually it basically has but that’s what home ownership is, AMIRIGHT? (Nope. God let’s hope not but it is for now so I’ll do the usual…turn lemons into lemonade. And add lots of vodka.)

HAPPY WEEKEND!

I often hype myself up (or make myself laugh) by rattling off quotes from Leslie Knope of the TV show Parks & Recreation. She is my spirit animal. If you were going to disagree and claim there is someone more like Leslie Knope than me, you'd get the April side of my personality; but if I am being 100% honest, if there is anyone (or team in this case) in Jacksonville who is actually "the Leslie Knope" of celebrating holidays, hosting amazing events, and making people happy...it is The St. Johns Town Center. (That will be the first and almost last time I ever admit that anyone is more Leslie than me.)

In reality, if I were the REAL Leslie Knope of this town I'd stay on top of the distinctive difference in fun that is chocolate chip day versus chocolate chip cookie day (because yes, they both have their own days) and commemorate them both in the most sweet and glorious fashion. However, I certainly wasn't pulling a Leslie during the first part of this month during our move and I almost missed a fabulous weekend of deals. THANKS TO MY PALS at the St Johns Town Center (the REAL Leslie Knope of celebrating any and everything that makes Jacksonville so awesome), not only did I not forget but I was able to kick off the holiday season and take advantage of extra savings as a military spouse with their Veterans Day Deals. 

Honoring Veterans Day 

Growing up, I was taught to understand and appreciate the sacrifice of military personnel and their families. Their service and dedication to fighting for our freedom and defending our nation is something I feel many of us often take for granted. Now as an adult, I appreciate it because I am a Navy wife. My husband serves in the United States Navy and has for almost 12 years. (See picture above...he gets bashful if I talk about it so I am keeping it short and sweet.) 

Any day that allows our community to come together and reflect on what Military personnel, veterans, and their families give to our nation is most definitely a reason to reflect and remember.

I was honored to work with the St. Johns Town Center on this post because if they were to try to tell you all the amazing things they are doing to support, honor, and celebrate our local military members you'd never have time to actually stop and shop. Treat Everyday Like Christmas

So how do I kick off the holidays each year? I know it's Christmas on my calendar after that BIG fancy tree at the St. Johns Town Center is all LIT up and ready for visitors. Which means, this weekend is the start of my holiday season!

Although Elf himself has yet to make an appearance at the St Johns Town Center Holiday Spectacular, we're joined this year by Elvis Duran and the Morning Show personality Garrett and Jesse McCartney. Buddy The Elf, What's Your Favorite Color?

No, this is not my first rodeo. My family and I attend the St Johns Town Center Holiday Spectacular every year and always have a blast. If you have young ones who can't stay out as late, no worries. Bring them in the afternoon to try out some of the fun festivities but know patience is a virtue.

Yes, it will be busy.

Yes, you'll have to spend more than .8 seconds to park.

And yes, there will be a crowd of other festive folks.

BUT. IT'S. SO. WORTH. IT.

(Btw, if parking and walking is an issue there are several easy solutions. 1) The Town Center has valet. Use it. They rock. 2) They also have shuttles. I'm dropping a link to the shuttle information here. If you feel like you've parked so far and can't walk to the middle area where the tree is located, then call them. They will come and pick you up. FOR FREE. I'm serious. Call 904.610.9182.)

Light It Up

One little-known fact about me is my love for the Elvis Duran and the Morning show on 97.9 KISS FM. For the last few years, one of their hosts has joined us in Jacksonville for the fun. We have an annual Fireball tradition and it will continue this year. You don't have to join this tradition. It's just a purse smuggle I started two years ago because I hope to make Elvis my BFF for life.

I always dress up just a little because it's what I do, but wear what makes you happy and comfortable. Or arrive a few minutes early, survey the crowd and pop into your favorite Town Center store to grab something new to fit the vibe. (Listen, you're here. I'll show you how to spend money. No problem. Dark Florals and Boots for Fall?

Just Call Me Miranda

We all know the line. It's iconic. And also filled with the harsh truth for spring style year after year. Are florals ever really groundbreaking? We see them every spring and summer and we typically rock them until the basic b**ches of autumn roll into our lives. At which point, we pack away the prints and bust out the flannel and plaid and pretend to live our prettiest pumpkin patch lives.

But it’s 2018. This is no ordinary year. It’s time for a change. (What a time to be alive, y’all.) It’s time to keep florals in full bloom until Miranda tells you it’s no longer acceptable. (And I mean the actual Miranda…the person who inspired the character anyways. Not me. I don’t think that highly of my opinion. Not yet anyways. Give me a few glasses of wine and I may say otherwise.)

And the great thing about fashion this fall, is florals are here to stay but are showing in the moody, muted tones I need to ensure the prints match my snarky sentiments, pale skin and cold heart. (I’m talking black, grey, olive, beige, burgundy, etc.)

I’m Not Even a Flower Girl

I mean that in the sense that I generally don’t care for flowers. Don’t buy them for me. I can’t appreciate them. I’d rather a $50 Target gift card if you need to show your love. BUT in the wedding sense, I was a flower girl several times. Along with a bridesmaid almost as many times as the 27 dresses chick. TRUE STORY. I’ve probably been a maid of honor in almost as many weddings as you’ve attended…and that doesn’t count my spins as just a bridesmaid. (Another post, another day.)

However, florals this fall seem to be almost as important as PSL, pumpkin picking, and scarf wrapping, so finding a print in a tone you’ll love won’t be hard. You can easily find florals in dresses, jackets, boots, and pj’s so there is no excuse to not give them a wear in the next few months. (Honestly.)

How To Freshen It Up for Fall

1) Sheer Mesh Floral Tops

This top from Target (from this post on #TheBorrowedBlog) is perfect for fall. Especially in places where it doesn’t quite feel like fall yet. It’s perfect for layering under dresses, dressing up a pair of boyfriend denim, or for pattern mixing with fun skirts.

2) Mini Dresses with Moto Accessories

Dresses with moto accessories is one of my favorite looks year round, not just in the fall. Adding a little edge to your florals with leather and hardware is a quick, easy, inexpensive way to bring fall vibes to your summer florals. (image via Pinterest linked in photo.)

3) Floral Booties

For those of you that don’t love wearing florals on your clothing, you can always add a little edge with floral boots and booties for fall. My favorites from Just Fab (one of my go to online shoe sources) are linked above. Floral booties are an inexpensive way to add a little flair to your classic LBD or summer sundresses to easily transition seasons for less.

4) Go 2000’s Chic in Silk Tops and Distressed Denim

Everything that’s old is new again, right? Throw it back to your old college days (or high school for some of you) and go with the classic top and denim look. Keep it fresh with of the moment styles and distressed denim instead of the wide leg and spaghetti straps of the good ole days. (Image from Pinterest via Who What Wear)

5) Floral Moto Jackets

Yes, here I go again with mentions of moto jackets. I. LOVE. THEM. While I typically keep them simple, I love the idea of one with a little more panache. In this instance, because it is more of a trendy statement piece I absolutely encourage renting an item of this nature. BONUS OPTIONS: If none of these strike your fancy just keep your fall florals fresh with darker prints, jewel tones, sweater dresses, flowy maxis and dresses that layer. EASY! But What About You? 

Once in a blue moon I'll receive a stray comment from a friend or passerby about how they couldn't pull off some of the dresses I wear because they aren't tall or they have a short waist, etc. etc. BUT I AM NOT HERE FOR THAT. This dress is amazing! Anyone can pull it off but you need to be prepared for compliments and double takes. (And also prepared to use some dress tape and boob lift tape.) For reference, I rented a size 8 in this Proenza Schouler dress and it fit perfectly.
