Also known as a Medicare insurance agent, they are a major (and free!) resource for all Medicare beneficiaries.

If you see either title on their business card, their mission is to help you enroll in the plan best fit for your current and future healthcare needs.

Interested in working with a Medicare agent or broker? From exploring plan options to learning upcoming deadlines, here’s what you can expect.

A summary: What is a Medicare insurance broker

A Medicare insurance broker is knowledgeable on all of the available Medicare insurance plans and carriers in your area. In addition, they are licensed to sell these plans to you.

They are like a personal coverage concierge. They learn your needs and find the right services for you from the best providers. You only work with one person, but receive quotes and options from multiple carriers. It saves you time, effort and money.

It also means you don’t have to make numerous phone calls to different carriers to get quotes yourself.

Find the best Medicare insurance broker

Instead, you can just find one experienced agent to work with who will do all of the leg work for you. And get the expert guidance you need.

In your search to find a top Medicare agent in your area, here are some of the key qualifications to consider.

Is the agent or broker local to your area?

There are state-specific guidelines, plan differences and more. A local Medicare agent is super beneficial to staying-in-the-know when it comes to insurance providers and area services.

Are you working with an independent agent or broker?

Independent is key. It means that the agent is not being reimbursed by an insurance provider for recommending a certain plan or product. In other words, it further ensures that your agent is placing your interests first.

Does the agent or broker sell plans outside of Medicare?

It’s always best to work with someone focuses 100% on Medicare insurance and is not a sales agent for other insurance products. The industry is always changing, and it’s important to work with someone who is up-to-date on all the important details. Be sure to look for a “full-time” Medicare agent.

Is the agent or broker licensed in the state?

The Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) requires agents to complete annual training and be licensed. In addition, some states require local certifications. Be sure to check for qualifications.

Here’s a helpful guide highlighting important DME criteria and your health care coverage.

Durable Medical Equipment DME Criteria

DME is equipment that helps you to function safely with a medical condition on a daily basis.

In order to be classified as covered DME, the medical supplies and/or equipment must meet these basic criteria:

Durable to withstand daily repetitive use

Serves a medical purpose

Is used at home and out

Not useful to someone without a medical condition

Able to last a minimum of 3 years

To be clear, durable medical equipment must be necessary for helping you to maintain your health when managing an illness or medical disability.

10 Examples of DME Equipment and Supplies

Medicare often covers many types of medical equipment and supplies.

DME includes some common types of equipment, and it covers medications that are prescribed for use with these supplies.

Durable medical equipment includes:

Blood sugar test strips and meters

Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) device

Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) device and supplies [ Does Medicare cover CPAP Machines?]

Nebulizer device and nebulizer medicines

Oxygen equipment and supplies

Infusion pumps and supplies

Lifts [ Will Medicare pay for a lift chair?]

Mobility equipment (canes, crutches, wheelchairs, scooters)

Prosthetic devices

Hospital beds [ Does Medicare cover hospital beds?]

Speak with your doctor and a local Medicare agent for any additional supplies you may need and do not see listed above.

That said, Original Medicare does not consider assistive items, such as grab bars and shower chairs, as DME.

It also does not cover single-use items, such as bandages and gloves. Why? They do not meet the criteria of durable repetitive use.

And this might be something you're looking into if it feels like you are never getting a full night's sleep.

You may feel foggy and unfocused throughout the day. The signs could be pointing toward obstructive sleep apnea or another sleep disorder.

If so, it’s time to see your doctor and talk through the steps to determine a sleep apnea diagnosis. In the meantime, let's cover some of the basics of sleep apnea and your Medicare coverage.

From undergoing a sleep study to CPAP supplies and more, here’s what to expect and how to best navigate costs from your insurance company once diagnosed.

Step One: Sleep Study

To best determine the cause of your disrupted sleep? You will likely complete a sleep study, which is also known as a polysomnography.

This is important, as your symptoms may or may not be due to sleep apnea. It’s possible you could be experiencing a different sleep disorder, such as REM sleep behavior disorder, periodic limb movement disorder or chronic insomnia.

If it does turn out to be sleep apnea, there are also different types.

Central sleep apnea: This sleep apnea disorder reflects a disconnect between your brain and breath. In other words, the muscles in charge of your breathing are not receiving the necessary signals to perform properly.

Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea: This is also called complex sleep apnea syndrome. It is a combination of two types: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): This is the most common type of sleep apnea and is due to issues with the throat muscles.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Do you snore loudly or make choking sounds during the night? You may have a blocked airway.

The airway can become blocked by an overgrowth of soft tissue in the back of the throat that relaxes when you are asleep. In some cases, the weight of your neck and tongue position while sleeping is the cause of the blockage.

The good news? There are effective ways to treat this condition. This includes using a CPAP machine.

What Does CPAP Equipment Include?

A CPAP machine is a medical device used to gently move oxygen through a nose piece or mask to the throat. This air pressure keeps the airway open. Oxygen levels remain steady, and there is less disruption to your sleep cycles.

Here are some of the CPAP supplies needed for a CPAP machine.

Complete interface: full face mask, nasal mask, nasal pillow system.

A full face mask covers both the nose and mouth. This type of mask is helpful for those who primarily use their mouth for breathing.

The nasal mask completely covers the nose. Those who do not breathe through an open mouth will find this type useful.

Finally, a nasal pillow system covers only the nostrils. It does not cover the bridge of the nose. And it can sometimes be a more comfortable option for users.

Cushions for a nasal mask or nasal pillows.

Usually made from foam and silicone, cushions offer both comfort and a better seal for masks that cover only the nose.

Cushions for full face mask.

There are also cushions for a full face mask. If you have a latex allergy, make sure to read descriptions when purchasing replacement cushions.

Tubing

Your CPAP also comes with flexible tubing that attaches to the machine and your mask. A standard tubing length is about 6 feet.

Filters

Filters help provide the cleanest oxygen during sleep. They come in reusable, disposable and bacteria-prevention packs.

Humidifier water chamber

To prevent drying out your airway too much, the CPAP machine also includes a water chamber. This also assists in keeping airways open by reducing blockages in the nose from dried mucus.

Chinstrap

A chinstrap helps keep the jaw in proper alignment during sleep. It also helps with keeping a full face mask in place.

DME: Does Medicare Cover CPAP Machines and Supplies?

Does Medicare cover CPAP machines? It’s a common and important question.

Medicare offers coverage and/or partial reimbursement for equipment considered Durable Medical Equipment (DME). A medical device must meet key DME criteria to qualify.

When it comes to CPAP equipment, your DME supplier and doctor must be Medicare participants in order for your CPAP to be covered. If your machine qualifies for coverage as a DME, select Medicare plans will cover replacement parts for your CPAP machine on a determined schedule.

Does Medicare Cover CPAP Machines and CPAP Therapy?

When therapy is needed to improve a medical condition, Medicare will pay on a trial basis. A CPAP machine rental is often covered for the three-month trial.

There is a Medicare compliance period in which you must use the CPAP machine for at least four sleep sessions per week over the first 30 days of the trial.

If the therapy is documented in your medical record as successfully improving your condition, Medicare may continue to supplement your medical device.

More cost-saving news: If you consistently use your CPAP rental machine for 13 months, you officially own the equipment under Medicare.

CPAP Medicare 2021: Covering Medicare Plans & Your CPAP Needs

Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea?
Different Types of Walk-in Tubs

There is a wide selection of different designs for walk-in tubs. Each type of tub offers features that you may find to be the most suitable for your health needs.

Wheelchair Accessible Tubs

Many tubs feature a wide swinging door to allow for easy transfer from a wheelchair to the seat. These tub types have easy-to-reach button controls and allow for a fully immersive bath.

Tub-Shower Combination Tubs

Not sure if you prefer an affordable walk-in shower or a walk-in tub? You can get the best of both worlds. These tubs are often referred to as a "hybrid" or "combination.” Most offer a handheld shower wand to rinse off safely from a seated position.

Bariatric Walk-in Tubs

Walk-in tubs have a standard weight limit of 300 pounds. A bariatric tub is designed to safely support weights over 300 pounds and is overall more spacious. They offer many of the same safety features and door options found in other walk-in tubs.

A Wide Variety of Other Tub Types

Besides a good soak and walk-in convenience, there are other walk-in tubs with some unique features. Here are a few examples.

First, there are aerotherapy walk-in tubs. The water is pushed through in a much lower force than conventional jets and is infused with air. It is equivalent to a gentle massage rather than a deep tissue massage.

Next, chromotherapy walk-in tubs feature a range of colored lights that create a soothing type of water therapy. Homeopathic practitioners state that the use of light helps to flow energy through the body. It creates a safe, spa-like experience in your own bathroom.

Walk-in Tubs as Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

Traditional Medicare has not recognized walk-in tubs as Durable Medical Equipment (DME).

You may wonder why isn't it covered? One of the reasons: Walk-in tubs can be enjoyed by others who do not have a medical need, unlike a cane or walker. They don’t necessarily fit all of the DME criteria.

Also, installation fees and remodeling work to accommodate a large tub can get expensive. This type of equipment is also permanent and cannot be recovered for use by others.

Does Medicare Pay for Walk-in Tubs?

There are some situations in which Medicare will pay or offer financial assistance for a walk-in tub. They will not cover the full cost of a walk-in tub, but you may be eligible for some reimbursement.

Original Medicare Part B

You can submit a claim that supports your medical need for a walk-in tub. Your doctor will have to be a Medicare participant and provide documentation of your medical condition.

The claim will only be considered for reimbursement after you have installed your walk-in tub and have receipts to submit. It is important to note that Original Medicare usually does not cover this expense.

Medicare Supplement

Also known as Medigap, this is private insurance that fills the "gap" between what is covered by Medicare and your out-of-pocket expense. An agent that specializes in Medicare can help you with finding the best Medigap coverage that may pick up some of the cost for a walk-in tub.

Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan

Medicare Advantage plans have been expanding the definition of what equipment should also be considered DME.

For 2021, there are expansions to DME that may be able to cover the full cost of a walk-in tub or at least expanded reimbursement. Consult with your local Medicare Agent to see if these changes will benefit you.

Get Enrolled in Medicare That Will Help Cover Walk-in Bathtubs

So, does Medicare pay for walk-in tubs? The answer is yes and no. It depends on your Medicare plan. A walk-in tub cost may be partially reimbursed, fully covered or not covered at all.

Confusing? Yes. This is one of those situations where it certainly pays to speak with a Medicare expert.

Get a Free Medicare Quote Today

We can answer the question, "Does Medicare pay for walk-in tubs?" for you. This is one of those questions where you want the answer before you actually need the answer. No one wants to be worrying about what Medicare will cover and what will end up being out-of-pocket costs when you have a health care concern.

Here’s how Medicare will cover the cost of hospital beds and other important Medicare plan information.

When Might You Need a Hospital Bed at Home?

Medicare requires a medical reason for a hospital bed. It also states that the bed must be used within one's home, not an assisted living or nursing home. This is especially helpful for seniors who have chosen to age in place.

Some common medical benefits from using a hospital bed are to:

Achieve correct body alignment

Decrease pain and pressure with positioning

Improve circulation

Improve respiratory function with positioning

Increase safety

Make it easier for caregivers to provide care

Make turning and getting in and out of the bed easier

Use special devices, like traction, that can’t attach to a regular bed

Specific diseases or injuries can increase senior care needs. Some may be long term or temporary. Examples of medical conditions that may need a hospital bed at home include:

Arthritis

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Chronic pain

Heart conditions

Osteoporosis

Paraplegia

Severe leg injuries

Spinal cord disease or injury

The provider must include the patient’s diagnosis and reason for the bed in the prescription. This will help ensure that Medicare will approve the request for coverage.

Hospital Beds as Durable Medical Equipment DME

Medicare and insurance companies have specific criteria for durable medical equipment DME. It may only be used for medical reasons in a home setting. It also must meet the definition of durable, which means the item should last at least three years.

Medicare-approved DME includes hospital beds. Not always covered? Hospital bed accessories, like side rails and bed tables.

Side rails: Side rails provide extra safety and the ability to move around in the bed. If the bed doesn’t have side rails, Medicaid may approve this as an accessory.

Over-bed tables: They make activities — like eating and hygiene — more convenient. However, Medicare does not consider them medically necessary. Therefore, they aren’t covered.

Explore the Type of Bed and Hospital Bed Costs

Your provider will determine the type of bed you may need. Here's a description of common types.

Full-Electric Hospital Beds

Patients or caregivers use a controller to raise and lower the head and foot of the bed. Push a button to change the height of the whole bed. This improves comfort, promotes circulation, relieves pressure, and improves breathing.

Full-electric beds range can cost up to $2,000.

Full-Electric Bariatric Hospital Beds

If the senior weighs between 350 to 1,000 pounds, they may need a bariatric bed. Medicare covers part of this cost if prescribed.

These extra heavy-duty beds can measure 88 inches long and 54 inches wide. This increases comfort and helps prevent bedsores and injuries.

In general, bariatric beds range in price and usually run around $4,000. They also require special sheets and mattress pads.

Semi Electric Hospital Beds

Caregivers use a hand crank to raise and lower the bed. A controller button electrically raises and lowers the head and foot of the bed.

This offers a less expensive option while maintaining user convenience. Most bed adjustments involve the head and foot.

Manual Hospital Beds

This type of bed uses hand cranks and levers to adjust the bed height and the head and foot. This bed doesn’t have any type of motor and is often less expensive.

Does Medicare cover hospital beds at home?

As a Medicare beneficiary, you may worry about paying for a hospital bed. You can contact a Medicare expert to help answer your questions. The following gives an overview of Medicare coverage.

Original Medicare Part B

Original Medicare Part B will pay 80 percent for approved hospital bed purchases or rentals. You will be responsible for the remaining 20 percent.

These beds fall under Medicare’s durable medical equipment policy. You may have the option to rent or buy a hospital bed. Some other bed accessories are also covered by Medicare. This may include mattress covers that help prevent bedsores and trapeze bars.

You must meet the Medicare Part B deductible, which is $203 per year for 2021. Once met, Medicare starts paying its part.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplemental Insurance, also known as Medigap, can help with out-of-pocket costs. If you’re an Original Medicare beneficiary and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare pays first. Then the Medigap policy pays its part, which decreases the amount you pay.

With Medicare Part B, it will cover hospital beds. You will also have a yearly deductible.

Medicare Advantage Plan

Seniors have the option of one of the many Medicare Advantage plans available. A private insurance company contracts with Medicare to provide this alternative. MA must offer the same benefits as Original Medicare, so it does cover approved hospital beds.

Your healthcare provider must prescribe the hospital bed for home use. Also, the doctor and the DME Medicare supplier must be and stay enrolled in Medicare. If they aren’t, Medicare won’t cover hospital bed claims.

The Advance Beneficiary Notice

You have the right to choose different products than the basic ones covered by Medicare. You will need to submit The Advance Beneficiary Notice. This gives details about how the product is different and you agree to pay the extra cost.

Get Enrolled in Medicare That Will Help Cover Hospital Beds

Get costs covered for a hospital bed for home from a Medicare plan that’s right for you.

It’s important to note that Medicare choices and the Medicare approved amount for hospital beds can vary by state. Thus, you need to speak with a Medicare expert in your area. They can also help connect you with a Medicare participating suppliers for the type of bed required.

When searching for a “Medicare agent near me,” be sure to choose someone who’s licensed in your state.
What to Look for When Searching for a “Medicare Agent Near Me"

In order to find the most qualified Medicare agent or agency, you’ll want to look for these four things.

1. Properly Licensed Medicare Agents

Agents who offer Medicare options and advice must complete Medicare training and certification through America’s Health Insurance Plans AHIP. (Sometimes referred to as American Health Insurance Plans AHIP.) When considering an agent or agency, make sure to ask if they have this training.

In addition, individual states often have specific certifications. State-specific requirements must be met before agents are licensed to sell Medicare. A licensed Medicare agent can greatly assist you in becoming familiar with confusing Medicare terminology and expertly guide you through the enrollment process.

2. An Independent Agent or Independent Medicare Insurance Agency

Independent Medicare agents and independent Medicare insurance agencies are not employed by insurance companies. This means they are able to offer multiple plan options.

Insurance companies are also not paying or incentivizing these agents. You'll receive unbiased advice, which is the best kind of advice.

3. A Full-Time Specialist in Medicare Coverage and Medicare Plans

Finding an agent that specializes in Medicare is your best option when looking for advice about enrollment choices.

Some insurance agents bundle multiple types of health care insurance and life insurance. However, it is more important to not risk your long-term health on someone who may only know a bit here and there about Medicare insurance. Find an agent who lives and breathes Medicare. And it’s all they do.

A full-time Medicare specialist is an expert that can guide you in avoiding common mistakes in form submission, meeting deadlines and so much more.

4. A Local Agent in the 50 States

There are many benefits to working with a local Medicare agent. For instance, they will be up to date on area-specific requirements or recent changes made by the state.

A local Medicare agent will also be more knowledgeable about area providers and specialized services. In other words, they can better meet your personal needs.

Another benefit? Helping you avoid scams. Medicare beneficiaries are sometimes targeted by scams. A local licensed agent will have access to the latest information regarding any fraudulent activity occurring in your area and can help you avoid these issues.

Reviewing Your Medicare Options

There is no "one size fits all" Medicare coverage. Independent insurance brokers will review all of the different Medicare plans with you. This includes Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance, a Medicare Advantage plan, and more. Most importantly, your agent will help find you with the best health care insurance that fits your budget and long-term medical needs.

Find a Medicare Agent Near Me and Get Enrolled in Medicare

Health care is important. Your health is your wealth, as the saying goes. And you want to make sure you are preserving it in your golden years.

Be sure to keep these four tips in mind when searching for "a Medicare agent near me." And you'll be on your way to finding a qualified, local Medicare agent. Get a Medicare expert in your corner and be confident in your health care decisions.

Medicare enrollment doesn't have to be difficult or confusing. And the right Medicare plan matters.

Learn more about your Medicare options from a local expert today! quarantine efforts at home

The coronavirus continues to be a health and safety concern for millions of Americans nationwide. High-risk groups, such as those 65 years or older, have been advised that staying at home is the safest way to navigate the pandemic and to engage local and online resources for the delivery of necessities. Home-delivered meal services are covered by many Medicare Advantage (MA) plans and can support quarantine efforts for eligible seniors.

“Free home-delivered meals are one of the many Medicare Insurance plan benefits that can help lower the COVID-19 risk for seniors,” said Frank Healy, Founding Partner of LocalMedicarePro.com. “These programs are not always widely marketed, so many eligible recipients do not know about their available options or what is covered by their plan.”

Medicare Advantage is Medicare Part C and is available through private insurance companies. An alternative to Original Medicare, it bundles Part A, Part B and Part D. In 2019, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) moved to include home-delivered meals and supportive services under MA for Plan Year 2020. It was a solution to address the holistic healthcare needs of the elderly population, including the chronically ill, and improve overall outcomes.

Home-delivered meal services bring nutritious foods right to a recipient’s front door. When covered by MA plans, these services provide a cost-effective and safe alternative to in-store grocery shopping during the coronavirus pandemic. Those with chronic conditions or returning home after a hospital stay may receive additional meal services, including coordination with doctors to create healthy selections that support individual care needs.

“It’s always important for eligible seniors to know all of the Medicare Insurance benefits provided, but especially so during a pandemic. Enrollees deserve to get the most out of their plan,” added Healy.

Select Medicare Advantage plans also include other supportive services, such as rides to medical appointments and private home aides.

About LocalMedicarePro.com

Local Medicare Pro connects consumers with Medicare agents who provide guidance and assistance throughout the entire Medicare process, including eligibility, best-fit coverage selection and enrollment.
