Just a reminder that as I continue to tidy up the studio and in my quest for more space to make that easier, I will be posting some designs going forward that have one or no special orders available. Today’s Tip

If your hair tends toward the oily side, or you try not to wash your hair too often, only apply conditioner from your ears down when you do shampoo. Conditioned hair collects dirt faster, and adds moisturizers oily hair near the scalp doesn’t need. This conditioning method will enable you to prolong the time between washes and prevent overly oily locks.

The design to the left is called “Venusian Tulip” and the big crystals that make up the center of the flower are extremely rare vintage Swarovski Crystal Aurora Borealis barrel crystals! I also realized that I completely forgot to post when I listed new FantasyStix a week or so ago, so go check those out too!

Updates!

Both the LongLocks Philosophy and Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow pages have been updated. As promised, many designs were removed from HTGT, so it should load much faster for you now. Also, don’t forget we can now accept Gmail addresses for the Collectors Club again, so if you’d like to change yours drop me a line. There are still a very few of the newly retired FoilStix left, and I plan to leave them up until I complete the process of removing all links to the page from the site (I’m making some minor updates to the pages while I do this, so it’s going to take me a little while, but I’m already about halfway through). I just recently announced that Stix Nouveau will be retiring shortly as well!

Three new BijouStix hair jewelry designs have been posted in the LongLocks catalog, and the Special Edition Designs page has been updated. This isn’t your average update, I’m introducing something new that should make a lot of people very happy, especially those who so mourned the retirement of ZenStix! All three of these new designs were created on the most gorgeous tapered wood sticks that are a bit longer than our bone sticks and just about the same width as Zens were! You like?? I’ll be making these available in almost all the LongLocks styles as they are updated, but I only have 200 pairs of them so unless I can find a supplier, they won’t be around forever. Prefer the bone? No problem! I can always do any design as a special order on bone for you!

Want to know if the hair you are losing is caused by breakage or natural shedding? Pull out a few strands out of your brush or comb and check the length. Hair that is about the same length as your hair will most likely be naturally shed, hair that is shorter was probably lost due to breakage.

The new Style & Angst Blog is LIVE!

The new redesign of Style & Angst is now officially live! It’s much easier to read, and even though I’m still tweaking it’s definitely an improvement over the old blog. It was the perfect week to do it too, there’s been tons of hair stuff in the news including how hair dye detrimentally affects your hair, the new crime wave of hair extension theft (and even scarier, ponytails right from people’s heads!), a fabulous video tutorial about how to fake a trendy short ‘do without snipping a single hair on your head, and just this morning, Jennifer Aniston’s unfortunate run in with a Brazilian Blowout that cost her just about all of her lovely long locks (talk about angst!) Come visit and subscribe via RSS (the blog feed is a different one than the What’s New at LongLocks feed, btw).

TONS of Other New Stuff!

I have updated both Waltzing Willow Sterling Silver Jewelry and Susan’s Closet to the new site format AND I have begun adding new stuff to Susan’s Closet! SEE? I told you I’d manage to do it soon. So far I’ve only added a half dozen things or so, almost everything brand new in mint condition, mostly jewelry (including a gorgeous purple turquoise and sterling silver pendant and the biggest genuine chrysoprase teardrop you’ve ever seen!). Just in Time for Halloween!

I have rewritten a large part of our Creating Special Effects Using Dramatic Hair Color tutorial to make it more readable and more enjoyable (I had only edited and written part of the first edition, it’s much better now, LOL!) Whether you just want to rock a wild temporary color for Halloween, try something before you take the permanent plunge, or are ready to go all out Helen Mirren/Kelly Osbourne on us, this guide has got ya covered! I cannot wait to go gray, it is taking forever. I am soooo going dusty purple when I do!

I have gotten many more pages updated to the new site design, and it seems it’s pretty popular! I’m so glad, it’s so stressful making changes like this. Peeps are especially liking the “Currently Trending” image links that are appearing at the bottom of updated pages, make sure you scroll all the way down so you can check them out and let me know what you think! I’ve made one giant step toward adding more stuff to Susan’s Designer Closet, every one of those pages has now been updated so it’s ready for me to start writing new descriptions, and I’ve started pulling stuff from my shelves that I am willing to part with, however reluctantly. I’m thinkin’ within a week or so new stuff will start appearing!

Continuing Trouble in LongLocks City!

We are still having a problem with gmail, and because that’s the case, we’ve come to the hard decision that we have to remove all gmail addresses from the Collectors Club. This was the last update I’m sending through to gmail in hopes of a small chance the remaining gmail users who haven’t already sent me an alternate address will see it. What it unfortunately comes down to is that if you want to remain a member of the LongLocks HairSticks Collectors Club, I *have* to have a non gmail address, and I need it ASAP so I can update your membership before I delete all gmail accounts, which will happen before my next update. If you’re looking for suggestions about how to handle this, so far those who didn’t have an alternate address at the ready have just opted to have the Collectors Club email go to their phone, or set up another email account from which they can auto forward it to wherever they want it to go (you should even be able to forward it to gmail, from a Yahoo address, for instance). Also... I hate you Google. “Don’t be evil” my ASS.

More New Stuff!

I’m still in the midst of my frantic boutique update, and things are continuing to move along at a snail’s pace (unless you’ve ever done this, you’d be astounded at the amount of work this is... tedious, boring, mind-numbing, I-could-not-hate-this-more-than-I-do-why-do-you-think-I-gave-up-being-a-geek work). Though I am still working through the main pages on the site, the major design update to the blog will be happening very soon. And yes, adding more stuff to Susan’s Designer Closet is still on my list, too. The final revisions to the menu are done, and it’s propagating throughout the site again. My buddy who mourned the loss of easy access to the QuickView Catalog is gonna be really happy to see “her” menu choice back, you will find it under the “Design Collections” submenu under Shop Hair Jewelry. Everything else should be pretty explanatory, though I did want to note that What’s New is now located under Communiqué on the pages that are already sporting the new menu. Want to give your hair an extra deep conditioning treatment? Shower at night and use your favorite deep conditioner, but don't rinse it out. Tuck your hair into a plastic shower cap and sleep in it. In the morning, rinse and enjoy luxuriously conditioned locks! Depending on your age, you'll either relive your childhood or come to a better understanding of just why your parents are as whacky as they are!

Urgent Message for LongLocks HairSticks Collectors Club Gmail Users!

Gmail is making my and the lives of the members of the LongLocks HairSticks Collectors Club miserable, as they've added the longlocks domain to their blacklist even though I've never sent a single spam message IN. MY. LIFE. I am in the process of alerting everyone I can that a new address is needed if you joined the Collectors Club using a gmail address. I'm sorry this is such a hassle but Google leaves me no choice, and yes I know... it sucks.

I plan to personally call every active gmail-subscribed member whom I am relatively certain wants to stay a member whom I don't hear from them within the next couple days (and I should bill Google for my time, too!) If you have my direct address you may email me with your new address of choice, or use our contact form. Also, please make sure you remove any LongLocks mail from your gmail spam folder, since apparently gmail is putting it there even though you didn't tell it to and I suspect leaving it there may add to the problem. Also, I'd think twice about using gmail to place orders at the LongLocks Boutique for the immediate future either, as I may not be able to notify you when your stuff ships depending on how long it takes for this to get straightened out :/

Please, if you subscribe to anything on the internet and decide you don't want it anymore, just unsubscribe. If you decide to erroneously mark it spam just so it won't show up in your mailbox, you may cause a lot of trouble for a lot of people without even realizing it. This is unfair and especially hard on small businesses (and even more so on tiny ones, like mine!) Remember, if you subscribed to it, it is NOT spam... ever.

Thanks for your help guys, especially those helping me investigate this, you so rock! What a bunch of *B.S.*, huh? LOL!

Four new MajeStix designs have been posted in the LongLocks catalog, the Special Edition Designs page has been updated, and one “last chance” special order design has been moved to Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow! Don’t forget I don’t update new pages until around midnight the day they’re posted, so if you miss a first edition you’ll save the $5 fee for a special order placed before the update is made with the fee added! You’ll also find a few previously removed designs added back to HTGT as well, which I returned to fill up some empty spots created by a special Collectors Club flash sale I had last week. Trouble in LongLocks City!

We seem to be having a problem with gmail. For some reason Google thinks we are sending spam (of course we're not, we have never sent anyone spam EVER and we never will) and while we work on being removed from their "List Devoid of All Light," we are unable to reach anyone with a gmail address. If you are a member of the LongLocks HairSticks Collectors Club or have placed an order with us using a gmail account, please contact us with another way to reach you so we can keep you updated on everything LongLocks.

We apologize if this causes you any trouble! Google may not care, but we certainly feel bad about how this may unnecessarily affect some, and even though this sort of thing apparently happens quite often, Google doesn't make it easy to fix. With all this in mind, please don’t ever block someone as spam if you subscribed to what you are receiving. It’s not fair to the sender, it’s not spam if you subscribed, and it’s not OK to do that instead of unsubscribing the proper way if that’s what you intend to do. When a business is put on an email blacklist, especially if it was done inappropriately, it causes a lot of innocent people a lot of aggravation, not just the business directly involved, but many of their customers as well. It’s just a really crappy thing to do that some inconsiderate people don't think twice about. And it makes me crabby. Nobody likes crabby.

More New Stuff!

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been extremely busy (Sleep? Pshah, who needs sleep) frantically updating the boutique, and have accomplished a great deal since the last email update. A major design update to Style & Angst will be the next big change you’ll actually be able to see . For all you fellow fashionistas (of any age), the Spring 2014 color trends have been added to the Prom Hair Tips page. I’m still trying to find some time to add more stuff to Susan’s Designer Closet but between the site update and studio time I’ve not yet been successful, but it’s on the horizon, promise. I have also reworked the menu again, it’s propagating throughout the site now, and I think this time it will make pretty much everyone happy. One kind person did point out to me that the QuickView Catalog is now really hard to find but I’m under the impression not many peeps other than she and I use it, LOL! That being said, there is a link to it in the right-hand column of all these updates, and it’s linked at the bottom of the LongLocks Catalog (you can always bookmark it too!) However, if you do use it and miss easy access, let me know and if I get enough complaints, I’ll come up with sumthin’. Your happiness is more important to me than my design aesthetic (but just barely ;)

Today's Tip

Don't believe Grandma, she was sooooo wrong on this one! Giving your hair a hundred strokes a day won't do much more than cause damage! Brush hair as rarely as you can and use a wide-toothed comb whenever possible to minimize damage to those lovely locks! By all means keep it free of knots however, which are almost certain to cause some breakage.

There aren’t a whole lot of photos in the gallery yet because my time to work on this stuff is very limited (for obvious reasons... I work on photos in bed on my iPad before I sleep like other people actually read!), there will eventually be lots more coming down the road. Today's Tip: Always use warm or cool water to wash your hair, even in winter! Avoid hot water all year long as it tends to dry out your hair and scalp, which in turn can make your hair fragile. This is especially a concern in the dry, winter months. The cooler water will also cause the cuticle to lie flat, making your hair shinier. Bonus!

The Good Stuff

Five new LongLocks DragonStix designs have been posted in the LongLocks catalog, the Special Edition Designs page has been updated, and three “last chance” special order designs have been added to Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow! The Share button is back! You are no longer limited to sharing what you love at LongLocks with your peeps on facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+. With the reemergence of the Share button, you can post your fav LongLocks designs and articles pretty much anywhere, including Reddit, StumbleUpon, Digg and Tumblr (and about a million other places I’ve never even heard of… cuz I’m antisocial ;)

The Not-So-Good Stuff

The last of the LongLocks styles scheduled for retirement have moved on to greener pastures, LongLocks IllusioniStix and MarbeliStix are no more. Unfortunately, it did turn out that ZenStix had to be “put down” too, as I didn’t end up with enough to do one last round of ‘em when all was said and done. The last special order designs of all three styles have been moved to Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow. Now, I do have one tiny bit of good news… I still have a few (and by a few, I mean A FEW) ZenStix I can use for special order designs. I know these were really popular and I hate having to retire them, so I will certainly be happy to turn the last few remaining pairs into something fabulous for anyone who might want them. Just let me know what colors you are interested in and I’ll send you designs from the archive from which you may choose what strikes your fancy. First come, first served kidz, you don’t wanna procrastinate if you want a shot at the last of the Zens or you risk being really disappointed! (I know, I know, do as I say and not as I do... The Bad News

I'm sure most of the "old timers" recall that I had to retire ZenStix a couplefew years ago because I couldn't get any more of the wrapped bamboo sticks, and then was able to bring them out of retirement again when I found a stash of them I didn't know I had. I am once again getting down to the last of my supply of bamboo sticks, and even after all these years have been unsuccessful in finding a new supplier for them. Depending on how many special orders are placed for Zens in the meantime, these may be the last time the style is updated. If it's not this time, it will certainly be the next (but I don't really anticipate them making it past this update). This means if you have your heart set on a pair of ZenStix and you want to know if I have something in the archive in a particular color or bead of which I can do a special order version for you, now is the time to ask!

More Regarding PRX

Has anyone been listening to PRX? They have been playing this hilarious recording of parents interviewing their two little kids after one cut off all the other one's butt-length hair, and I of course thought of LongLocks fans when I heard it. If you're enjoying the PRX stream, please let me know! Don't forget I added a permanent link to the player on the What's New page right below the search box at the top, so you can easily start the player in a new browser window anytime you like (you'll have to keep the player window open to keep the stream playing).

LongLocks, Wednesday, January 18 and the Fight Against SOPA

On Wednesday, January 18 the LongLocks HairSticks Boutique will be participating in the protest against the SOPA and PIPA bills. For twelve hours, from 8am until 8pm, the catalog page will be replaced with a protest page that will enable you to directly call your Congressman with regard to this very important concern.

If you are not familiar with the SOPA and PIPA bills and their potential consequences for the internet as you know it, please read my blog post on Style & Angst and follow the link to Fight for the Future to watch the video and sign the petition that will be sent to Congress.

I hope you will join LongLocks and the many sites that will go black or participate in the protest on Wednesday (including Wikipedia, Google, Reddit, the icanhazcheezburger network sites, TwitPic, Mozilla, WordPress, etc.), by visiting our protest page and showing your support for the fight against these potentially devastating bills by contacting your Congressman.

Today's Tip: If you've recently used a non- or low-peroxide temporary color on your hair, don't give yourself a hot oil treatment. The hot oil will lift a good deal of the color from your hair. On the other hand, if you've used a temporary color you hate, hot oil treatments are a great way to remove the color more quickly!

Though designed in a more simple style to appeal to the long-haired men we love, these definitely aren’t just for the boys ladies! They are perfect for an autumn day enjoyed in the comfort of a fuzzy sweater and a favorite pair of jeans.

Today's Tip: Do you use hair conditioner that comes in jars and hate trying to get the last out of the bottom when it's almost empty? Next time, squeeze as much of the ends of your hair into the almost-empty jar, rotate the jar gently, and voila! The last of the conditioner is now where it should be!

Today's Tip: If you must use a brush on your hair, always use a boar bristle brush. Boar bristles have tapered ends and don't tear hair the way the flat, sharp ends of nylon bristles can. Boar bristle also has the added benefit of helping to distribute your hair's natural oils throughout its length, especially important for dry-haired gurls!

Today's Tip: Add a little water to your shampoo to increase its ability to lather. You can do this in the palm of your hand, or by simply ducking your head quickly under the water once you've applied the shampoo.

LongLocks DragonStix hair accessories are hand finished with paper I paint in brilliant watercolor jewel tones, which has a small textured pattern that is reminiscent of dragon scales! These hair accessories are preserved under several layers of clear, glossy enamel which gives them a gorgeous translucent look. Big Pending Changes to the LongLocks HairSticks Catalog

The LongLocks catalog and site menu (as well as my studio) are getting way out of hand so I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s time to retire several styles of LongLocks hair accessories (and I've been creating designs in some of these styles for over a decade!)

Though I'm not going to change anything in the catalog quite yet, I am dividing the currently available hair stick styles into two categories: “Current Hair Sticks Styles” and “Retiring Hair Stick Styles.” You will see these new categories in the new site menu as it updates throughout the LongLocks HairSticks Boutique. New designs will not be added to any LongLocks style that appears in the “Retiring Hair Stick Styles” section. When the designs that are now available in these styles sell the LongLocks style will be retired.

Retiring Styles:

If you want or need any of these styles to complete your collection, you might want to take a look at what is currently available. Alternately, you may feel free to contact me if you'd like to see what other designs in these styles from the archive of which I can create a special order version for you. Just include the color[s] in which you're interested and I’ll send you photos of designs in the archive that are in line with what you're looking for.

Because almost all hair care products these days contain silicone and the stuff is almost impossible to wash out of your hair, it's also impossible to avoid buildup. Today's tip: If your hair is very dry, try washing it with just conditioner! The conditioner will actually clean your hair without stripping it at all. I haven’t tried it yet, but an awful lot of people are swearing by the WEN Healthy Hair Care System. If you try it, please let us know what you think!

And this is an especially good batch, if I do say so myself! It even includes a LILY!

Today's tip: if you've recently used a non- or low-peroxide temporary color on your hair, don't give yourself a hot oil treatment. The hot oil will remove a good deal of the color from your hair. On the other hand, if you've used a temporary color you hate, a few hot oil treatments are a great way to remove the color more quickly, so no, you don't *have* to live with that fuchsia streak for very long if you really don't want to ;)

The Prom Hair Tips page has been updated with the fashion color forecast for Spring 2011! This is a useful thing to check out even if your prom was so long ago your hair was done in a Marlo flip, your date looked like Donald Hollinger, and you wore a wrist corsage.

Today's Tip: Want to know if the hair you are losing is caused by breakage or natural shedding? Pull out a few strands out of your brush or comb and check the length. Hair that is about the same length as your hair will most likely be naturally shed, hair that is shorter was probably lost due to breakage.

The Style & Angst blog is undergoing a major makeover! Stay tuned to see my first attempt at creating my own WordPress template, complete with menus and a fancy flash header and everything! Providing I haven’t broken anything too horribly, it may even make its debut this week. I have to admit it was fun designing a theme template from scratch, maybe I have a second vocation in my future and I’ll make a return to the tech world. NOT.

Speaking of Style & Angst, did you read about the new format for Stuff I Scored and my review of Rock & Republic’s sunglasses? LOVE them! And if you didn’t check out the Scary Model Creatures in Patrick Mohr Wins Ugly Model Contest at Paris Haute Couture Week, ya just gotta… you just will not believe what he did to those poor girls!

Today's Tip: Don't believe Grandma! Giving your hair a hundred brush strokes a day will expose it to mass quantities of undue stress. Brush hair minimally and use a wide-toothed comb whenever possible to minimize damage to those lovely locks (my personal favorite comb of all time is the Mebco Shower Detangler, it’s fabulous at removing knots and the only comb I’ve used for many years). By all means keep your hair free of tangles, which are almost certain to cause some breakage.

As long as the design is still a First Edition or two or more special order designs are available, you have a very good chance of turning the single into a pair if that’s what you’re after! Just change the count to “2” in the shopping cart, and if there is any issue we’ll contact you before processing your order.
