• Amethyst - A member of the quartz family. Colour will fade in the sun since the colour comes from the iron in it.
• Ametrine - The colour will fade when in sun too long. Made up of amethyst and citrine.
• Apatite - The colour will fade in the sun.
• Apophyllite - Can become brittle in the sun and colour can fade.
• Aquamarine - Direct sunlight will fade the blue to white if kept too long.
• Auralite 23 - Primarily composed of amethyst, so it can fade.
• Aventurine - A member of the quartz family and can fade in colour.
• Beryl - Can fade and get brittle in the sun.
• Calcite - Can fade and get brittle in the sun.

• Topaz - The colour will fade when kept in sun for more than 8 hours. A yellow topaz will turn brown and a deeper color topaz will turn maroon.

Crystals That Are OK In The Sun

There are some crystals that won't fade in the sun when charging for a few hours, but be mindful of crystals with faceted points in clusters because they can heat up and ignite a fire. And some crystals when left too long will get brittle and crack or break.

It is best to have partial shade when leaving your crystals in the sun. Below are some of the crystals that are safe in the sun for a few hours of charging and won’t fade.

• Amber -  Don't leave in the hot sun for too long as it can become soft and then brittle when it cools.
• Black Obsidian - The colour won’t fade because of its dark colour and it’s actually a glassy volcanic rock.
• Black Onyx - The colour is dark and won’t fade.
• Carnelian - The orange stones are generally ok in the sun.
• Howlite - No pigment colour to fade.
• Jade
• Labradorite
• Lapis Lazuli
• Moonstone - Usually charged under the moon, but when charged in the sun it can be balanced with masculine-feminine energy.
• Morganite
• Malachite
• Sunstone - Orange stones are generally ok in the sun.

To determine what crystals should not be in the sun is to observe the transparency of your crystals. Most crystals that are transparent or semi-transparent should not be exposed to sunlight as they are prone to their colours fading or the crystals cracking with the heat and light exposure.

Just like there are a variety of crystals with numerous healing powers and qualities to them, the amount of time crystals can be exposed to sunlight varies too.

Above is a brief list of what crystals should not be in the sun, but make sure to do your own research on what other crystals can or cannot be exposed to light. Some transparent crystals can only be exposed to sunlight for 5 minutes while others will be safe with exposure up to 30 minutes.

1. Amber is a stone. Incorrect! Although amber is found in the ground, it is not a stone or a mineral. Amber is fossilised tree resin. Amber is created from the pressure of the earth as it compresses the ancient forests that were buried millions of years ago. The resin from the trees is what creates amber and gives it its unique pine scent and variety of colour shades. Baltic Amber (considered the world’s finest) is 35 to 40millions years old.

Baltic amber is always light and warm to touch and it possesses electrostatic properties. Baltic amber is a translucent orange-yellow substance that glows when polished and held up to light, it has long been used in jewellery and other decorations. The proper classification for organic gems like coral, pearl, and amber is gem material, not gemstone.

2. Amber teething necklaces are for chewing on.  Incorrect! Amber teething jewellery should be kept out of a child’s mouth . amber necklaces are to be worn around the neck of the child and only when in adult supervision if you do choose to wear them. The necklace should not be long enough to be pulled, entangled or put into the child’s mouth. When measuring for a necklace, only leave a 2 finger gap between the neck and necklace. It is not meant to dangle. Make sure you always follow our measuring guide.

3. Amber teething necklaces are a new idea. Incorrect! In Europe, families have been using amber necklaces for so long that it has become a tradition. The Celts, Romans, Greeks and Arabs believed the stones had magical powers. Hippocrates himself mentioned the benefits of amber in his early writings. The Greeks saw amber not only as a medicinal stone but also as a symbol of social status, beauty, power and influence. The Chinese used to bury amber in the ground during their traditional festivals, honouring both hosts and guests. When a tree is punctured or scratched, the tree releases a sticky substance called resin to seal the wounded area. Over time, chemically stable kinds of resin will harden and form the pretty, translucent version of amber that you are familiar with. Thus amber is the hardened, stable resin of ancient trees. So what mistakes do people make when buying Baltic amber jewellery online?

The most common mistake is not to measure correctly and also buying cheap copal amber rather then genuine Baltic amber. It is key that you measure correctly for your amber pieces. This ensures that you are comfortable wearing it and that it is safety worn by children.

The biggest mistake? Cheap amber is readily available online. Often this is fake or young amber (copal) and it would not be as good as the genuine Baltic amber. Amber teething necklace and amber teething anklet safety. There has been a change recently in how Amber Teething Necklaces and teething bracelets/anklets are to be labelled in this country. Previously, amber for teething has been sold throughout the world with the label "Use under Supervision". Because there is no dedicated EU directive dealing with these products, they must be considered for labelling under the EU Toy Safety Regulations EN-71-1. When considered under this legislation, a certain test is applied to judge their suitability for use as a toy for children under 3 years. This test involves 3 elements; Size, Tension (strength of cord) and Impact. These products will not pass these tests, primarily because of their small size. The contention is that a child under 3 could put the necklace or bracelet/anklet in their mouth, in which case and it would not be safe. So we are obliged to label them as "Not Suitable for under 3 years". The product as a whole is what is under consideration. There is no question about the amber itself.

This high temperature and pressure initially form copal, which when drive off terpenes with sustained pressure and heat, finally results in the formation of Amber.

The physical properties of amber firstly mention the crystal structure that it has, which is amorphous i.e. it has no sort of systematic and well-organised crystalline structure. On Moh’s scale, its hardness weighs in between 2-2.5.

The amber deposit, which is almost 100,000 years old is considered to be the pure and true form of amber, which is in very high demand, but has low supply due to its rarity.

Historical Healing

Amber used to be carried by travellers for protection. It was deemed to give its possessor the courage of the tiger. Others believed amber was a sacred symbol of the sun or signified the presence of the Lord.

Man's interest in amber’s healing properties dates back to the Palaeolithic era

Over time, our interests have proven well founded in that the properties of Baltic amber are very beneficial to humans - let's call it Amber Healing Properties. Plants absorbed the amber resin and plant leaves were often used as an antibiotic to heal cuts and or in plaster to dress wounds.

Amber was the original natural medicine. When mankind began, there were no chemicals or additives or "quick medicinal fixes" as we often see in our society today. And as more people turn to what has worked in the past - and still works wonders today,

In the Middle Ages Baltic Amber Beads were even worn for the treatment of jaundice. It was believed that the magic force of this yellow stone could absorb unhealthy yellowness of the skin and the weakness of the organism. Terms Oleum succini (amber oil), Balsamum succini (amber balsam), Extractum succini (amber extract) were often used in the recipes and records of the alchemists of those times.

Baltic Amber is the hardened resin of ancient pine trees. This organic substance is most well-known for the incredible inclusions of insects that can be found within it. People have been making amber jewellery for over 10,000 years, which could make it the first gem material ever used. How amazing is that?! The fascination with amber continues today.

Baltic Amber History and Legends.

People have attributed mystical and healing properties to amber since Neolithic times. The Greeks knew that when amber is rubbed with wool, it creates sparks, so they dubbed the substance “electrum.” Relatively soft, amber has been carved into beads and jewellery since the Bronze Age, and it can be polished to a gleaming super polished finish. Many people have believed that amber’s warm colour and the way the material holds heat signify its healing powers; today people all over the world use amber necklaces, since the succinic acid in amber is believed to remove the pain of teething (Although they cannot be sold for this for safety reasons nor make health claims).

Amber Link to Sunshine

Amber’s bright, sunshine colours also enhanced this connection. The Ancient Greek historian Nicias believed amber to be congealed droplets of sweat formed on the Earth as The Sun set beneath the waves. Other ancient writers depicted these “droplets” of fossilised sap as the tears of gods or heroes on various quests.

Animals and Amber Symbolism

Amber symbolism also encompasses the animal world. The Vikings carved amber pieces into animal shapes believed to contain the strengths of the animals. In Ancient Greek and Roman times, women wore amber fish, frog, and rabbit figurines to ensure fertility. The early Chinese believed the souls of tigers became amber upon their release from this plane. 

Since amber frequently holds once living things, the classical worshippers of the Mother Goddess believed amber possessed the essence of life itself. Akasha, this animating principle or “fifth element,” bound together the other elements of earth, air, fire, and water.

Amber Inclusions and Valuations

It is rare that genuine amber is faceted. The highest values go to those pieces with clearly visible insect inclusions light colours and clarity. Since the Jurassic Park movie, the most popular inclusions are mosquitos. Inclusions of plant material, while of great interest to scientists, add little to the value of jewellery. (These inclusions are often too small to be recognised easily). Very large amber pieces are extremely rare. Good quality material is seldom used for anything but jewellery. Buyer beware though. A lot of inclusions are artificially formed and insects planted by rogue traders inside the amber to make it look genuine. Always test this for authenticity.

Fake amber is an industry all to itself, and has been for centuries. The material itself is often faked and so are animal and plant “inclusions” found in it. Plastic resin fakes are easy. Also, real amber may be heat treated to clarify it and produce “sun spangles” or small circular included planes that catch the light and glitter. Insects can be set in resin within hollowed out real amber pieces. The buyer should be wary of small or large insects that look too perfect (and offered at such a bargain price!). Real animal inclusions often are contorted or bent out of shape from their struggles in trying to free themselves from the sticky amber resin. Real fossils also do not retain their original colourful skins or shells. 

COPAL is NOT TRUE FOSSIL AMBER but a much younger form of tree resin.  There is a difference (age alone most obviously) and it can be identified.  Furthermore, copal contains inclusions of modern living life-forms whereas true fossil amber contains inclusions mostly of extinct prehistoric life.

Genuine amber is a resin so it is easy to fake in appearance.  The "amber" may be plastic with fake artificially placed organisms inside as inclusions or, the amber may be real but the inclusions are faked - a problem in today's amber market.  This is true with any rare inclusions (flowers, lizards, scorpions, bird feathers, mammal hair, reptilian skin, and blood filled ticks).  Inclusions of any vertebrates should be highly suspect and needs to be authenticated.

How Is Amber Used?

Amber has a wide range of transparency. The transparent material is used almost exclusively for jewellery. Amber is often tumble polished and used for beads, pendants, earrings, and rings. Faceted amber pieces are rare. Amber is also burned as incense and used as an ingredient in perfumes. Amber oil should always be used with a carrier and never applied directly to skin.

What is is made from and where is it found?

Amber is an amorphous (non-crystalline) mixture of organic compounds, including hydrocarbons, resins, succinic acid, and oils. Most of this substance comes from the preserved resin of the pine species Pinus succinifera. However, other ancient tree species have also produced the material. Amber has been preserved for at least 30 million years. Amber is classed into various types. The sea type is found undersea. The pit variety is dug up from the ground, especially from the Baltic region. Other types are clear, massive, fancy, cloudy, frothy, fatty, and bone, in reference to their appearance. Its hard to believe that such beautiful jewellery can be created from those not so pretty lumps of resin! 

Where can it be found:

• The Baltic Sea Region, including Poland, Germany, and Russia: most of the world’s amber comes from a region formerly known as East Prussia and now known as the Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian enclave.
• Sicily: material may be opalescent blue or green.
• United Kingdom: rarely found
• Norway; Denmark; Romania
• Myanmar: brownish yellow and brown varieties: also colourless, pale yellow, and orange.
• Lebanon: scarce, from very old deposits.
• Dominican Republic: mined from sedimentary rocks. Yellow, orange, and red colours. This material often contains well-preserved insects and sometimes displays a strong bluish tone in reflected light.
• Chiapas, Southern Mexico: produces golden yellow material.
• Cedar Lake, Manitoba, Canada.
• Point Barrow, Alaska.

It can be difficult to watch your baby suffer through that uncomfortable teething stage. Although some babies may experience very few or even no teething symptoms or discomfort, if your child is feeling irritable or looks to be in pain, read on for our essential tips on how to soothe a teething baby.

Give Your Baby Chilled Fruit to Help With Teething Relief

Once you’ve introduced your baby to solid foods, you can help soothe those sore gums with a tasty snack of chilled mashed bananas. To help prevent choking, place the fruit in a mesh feeder, and give that to your baby to lick or suck on. With a mesh feeder, you can also experiment with other types of cooked fruit, such as apples, strawberries, mangoes, or ripe pears. Two jobs in one! Teething relief and the safe exploration of new foods.

Use a Cold Washcloth to Soothe Sore Gums

Take a clean washcloth and submerge it in water, wring it out until just damp, and then place it in the fridge. Once cool, fold it smaller, and give to your baby to chew on to help relieve those teething baby gums. However, don't leave your child unattended while she's sucking or chewing on the washcloth, as this can be a choking hazard.

Cool a Metal Spoon for an Easy Teething Baby Remedy

Cool metal can be soothing, so grab a regular teaspoon from your kitchen drawer, and put it in the fridge. When the spoon is cool, gently rub the back of the spoon against your baby’s gums.

Massage Your Baby’s Gums

You can help provide some baby teething relief by carefully massaging those sore, little gums. After washing your hands, sit with your baby, and gently massage the gums in circular motions. We used a muslin cloth with our son and used to press it on his gums. Don't worry if you see blood on the cloth as that is natural. The gums have to break to let the new teeth through so a little blood is not unsual.

Give Your Baby a Chilled, Non-Gel Teething Toy to Chew On

Place your baby’s favourite solid, not liquid or gel-filled, teething toy in the fridge, and allow it to cool before handing to your baby, taking care to keep it clean. Make sure the toy is easy for your baby to hold. We have a number of these toys in our store right here :-)

Wipe the Drool Away to Prevent Irritation

One of the main signs of teething is drooling. Help protect your baby’s clothes with soft bibs, which you can also use for wiping your baby's chin. Wipe the drool from your baby’s face to make sure you keep it clean and dry. Gently wipe often enough to help prevent any rash or irritation, but not so often that you create additional irritation. Do not use baby wipes on baby's delicate face and neck. Some irritate and burn the skin. Plain water and cotton wool pads are best.

Give Your Baby Plenty of Cuddles

Make sure your baby gets lots of hugs. Sometimes, the biggest comfort for a teething baby can be cuddle time with Mum or Dad. Pick a comfortable chair, and rock your baby gently. This will provide some quiet time for hugs and comfort, while also giving you both some much-needed rest. If baby has got into a screaming fit cycle, we always found that the white noise app for the hoover or aeroplane broke the cycle of screaming and helped to calm him down.

Ask Your Child’s Doctor About Medication

If you’re concerned that your baby’s teething discomfort cannot be soothed by any of the above natural methods, consult your doctor or paediatrician for advice on using medication to help with baby teething symptoms. Please take note of the safety information as they are not often recommended for use before 3 months old. Some teething gels can be harmful if swallowed or used before 3 months old. Always read the packaging .

Teething is lots fun! Said no parent ever!

We all know it and we have all been there. Teething can take an equal toll on the toddler as much as on the caregiver or parents; in our case it was a living hell.

The teething period can start when the baby is around 3 months or it can happen very early and some babies are even born with teeth! Teething can last for at least well over six months until the baby gets most their toothy pegs.

It is a fact that when your babies are going through this challenging phase when their little pearly white teeth are emerging out of the gums, they are either cranky, have a fever, drooling, chewing and/or going through a lot of pain and discomfort.

Parents are suffering too with a lack of sleep and cranky baby thrown in for good measure! As parents and caregivers, our first instinct is to make them feel better and comfort the child. This is a fact for all of us and we turn to many things that can help them through this horrendous phase (that can last over a year).

When and how teeth come in can be different for every baby and may be based on family history. But most of the time, the lower front two teeth come in first, followed by the opposite top two teeth and the two on either side of those. Next come the two on either side of the bottom front teeth, then the first molars appear. The teeth in front of the first molars are next, and the back molars are the last ones to come in.

In all, 20 “baby teeth” will eventually be in place, usually by age 3 years.

Yes, you don't. And truthfully, that is the right choice. Many items available on the market are actually dangerous for children under a certain age. A number of big brand numbing products have recently had to change the labelling of their products to not use on babies under three months of age. 

Medicine that you rub on your baby’s gums to stop the pain of teething may not help. It quickly washes away in the mouth and may numb the back of their throat and make it hard for them to swallow.

Stay away from over-the-counter teething gels and liquids that have the ingredient benzocaine. The FDA says this ingredient shouldn’t be given to children under 2. It can cause rare but serious side effects.

How to Care for Baby’s New Teeth

Good oral hygiene is important, even before your baby has teeth:

• Until teeth start to come in, clean your baby’s gums with a wet washcloth or piece of gauze at least once a day.
• Once they have teeth, clean your baby’s mouth the same way at least twice a day. After feedings is a good time for this.
• After their first birthday, you can start to use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush with water and a small amount of toothpaste that doesn’t have fluoride in it. You can also start flossing between their teeth.

Amber jewellery is often called teething necklaces, teething anklet and teething bracelets but they are not for putting in the mouth while teething. Only silicone jewellery is suitable for teething babies as that is safe to chew on. Sure amber looks pretty like chewing accessories, but they should not be treated like one. Amber is an entirely natural resin obtained from trees that are most common in Europe's Baltic region, more specifically, the area that lies on the Baltic Sea shores. Amber is formed when this tree resin gets fossilised so it has to be old amber not young copal amber which is often passed off as the same.

Like all of you, we started the year full of hope and excitement to see what the year ahead would bring. The joy on Eddie's little face when he realised it was only a couple of weeks before he would see his beloved auntie, Nanna and cousins in Ireland again for the Easter holidays. The news started to break that coronavirus was here and it was real and it was having a devastating impact on lives and what we knew as normality. Suddenly the thought of getting home to see the family was hanging in the balance. Ireland went into lockdown but the flight was still showing as scheduled. We had hope we would get there and this would pass. One week before we were about to depart the status showed as cancelled. Eddies 8-year-old heart broke and he sobbed. I did too as the realisation struck that our lives were about to change for quite some time but we didn't know for how long.

The next day we got the news through that the schools were closing and the kids were to be educated at home, away from their friends and teachers. Us parents wondered how the heck we were to fit a KS Curriculum around running a full-time business from home

As I covered before, it was a pretty scary time for us as we had never experienced colic or reflux before. We felt helpless and often cried when he cried as he was in so much pain. He hated being held when in agony but at the same time wanted to be held and not put down. It was constant. His feeding schedule was a blur and neither of us was getting a lot of sleep. Each feed we prayed he would keep down his milk and each time he got sick again. Every evening he had what we called 'witching hour'. He screamed and screamed and screamed. Both of us walked miles around our sitting room as he just wanted to be rocked and sang to. In all honesty, it nearly broke us and put me to the biggest test of my life.

I went to the doctor in desperation looking for any avenue to help. He patronisingly said, "All babies cry"...  I felt the anger rage in me and wanted to cry as I knew that what we were going through was not right. It was not normal. It was robbing us of the best days of our child's life. We never got that 'newbie' stage. I was jealous of my friends who had those lovely calm babies that slept and hardly cried. Coffee shop meet-ups with my NCT group (who I still keep in touch with) was a source of stress and anxiety for me. Stupidly I felt judged by all the other parents, felt I was doing something wrong. I wondered what was wrong with me? What was wrong with him? Why couldn't he be a good baby like them?...

I needed to be with my mum and sister who were living in Ireland. We felt the break at home would help us both and to get through the sleep deprivation hell that was a baby with reflux and colic. I went home for 6 weeks with Eddie. In that time we tried everything to help him. He had colic drops, baby chamomile tea in a bottle, baby gaviscon, Colief, baby massage among lots of other things. His feeding time was like a military operation! Nothing worked. I was facing a decision to go down the Cranial Osteopathy route. My mum and sister knew of a lovely client of theirs called Helen. Helen told me all about homoeopathy and natural products and how I didn't have to go down the medical route. Her insights were fascinating! I must admit I was pretty sceptical at first!

While on maternity leave I had time to think about where my career was going and questioned whether I could face 4 hours a day commuting to London and back. I wondered how I would cope leaving Eddie with a nanny or leaving poor Simon to cope on his own while I was out of the house 12 hours a day. I decided to give handmade jewellery design a go and to see where it would take me. I always had an interest in jewellery design, crystals and gemstones. If it didn't work out then at least I had my career to go back to. You never know unless you try. I took that step into the unknown. In the months that followed, I was pretty much 'winging' running a work at home mum (WAHM) business. My background was in analysis and not running a business from scratch. Yes, we made some errors and corrected them but my goodness, I wish I had known then what I know now! We have come a long way through trial and error. We have learned to be the best we can be. Looking back, colic was most certainly hell but without that and Eddie I would not have had the time to reflect and take a whole different career path.

There are so many imitation gemstones on the market and also dubious named 'gemstones' from Chinese bead suppliers. My beading team set about researching the sources of the best raw materials and genuine gemstones. We were sold beads that were said to be genuine but on inspection and testing, they were not. We only wanted to supply you the customer with genuine gemstone and crystal pieces. Finally, we found a legit supplier and sent all the beads off to be tested. We are happy to say that they were all certified as genuine. At last, we could supply you with our own genuine gemstone designs. We have only ever sold genuine Baltic amber and genuine gemstones. 

Since gemstone designs have become popular, many other retailers have jumped on the bandwagon. They have designed their own ranges which is all well and good, however, they are clearly using fake beads. We have seen so so many fakes during our research and design phase that they are easy to spot with the naked eye. Every time I see a new design appear on the internet I inspect it. It's amazing how many retailers do not know their stones or crystals, do not know about the properties and are happy to sell you glass or plastic for the same price as our genuine high-quality gemstone and Baltic amber pieces. This is in essence fraud as you are paying for what you believe is genuine amethyst for example when you are actually getting coloured glass that will do nothing.

Did you know that it is also dangerous to use fakes especially next to the skin as synthetic beads can contain other harmful chemicals and dyes? Rest assured, we have had our enhanced items such as agate tested for dangerous dyes and they are all clear. (certs on request). We have also had our gemstones tested as genuine (see sample below). Please always be careful not to get ripped off. Sellers will claim they are real gemstones when they are not. You need to know what to look for.

Recently there has been a lot of talk about amber teething necklaces and a vast array of misinformation around amber and baby teething jewellery in general. I have read many badly written articles about them across social media etc. The researchers appear to mix up numerous products while sticking them under the label of baby amber teething necklaces.

I decided to finally get round to writing this blog to distinguish between the types of baby teething jewellery, components and amber jewellery for older children. I have also added photographs to show the clear difference between them all.

Silicone Baby Teething Necklace

This is a baby teething necklace made from silicone. It is designed for the mother to WEAR while the baby chews on the necklace while in a sling, feeding, nursing or while sitting on the mothers lap. Under no circumstances should the jewellery ever be worn by a baby or child. It is not designed to be used like that. It does not help that some manufacturers of these products show images of babies wearing them. This implies that they are safe for the baby to wear and they are not. The silicone pieces threaded on a cord with a pop clasp. The caregiver must wear it while the baby interacts with it safely. Our Gumigem range points out this safety aspect on our descriptions here.

Wooden & Crochet Baby Teething Necklace

Other designs of this necklace include ones made with wooden fiddle beads, crochet or silicone beads. I have never in 7 years seen a baby teething necklace made with marble beads. There’s a silicone design called marbling which is achieved by mixing two silicone colours to get a two-tone/marbled effect. It is not marble....

Teething necklace safety is very clear about the fact that the baby is not to wear these or chew on them or play with them unsupervised. They are certainly not supposed to wear when asleep!

Baltic Amber Necklace

This is not the same as a baby teething necklace for chewing. This is jewellery for children over 3 years of age as per EU General Safety Regulations. This is because it is made of small parts and not due to the amber itself.

Chewing is dangerous!

There are images circulating on the internet of babies playing with and chewing amber jewellery. This does not help and it sends the wrong message that it is for chewing! Amber necklaces contain small parts. Amber is a resin and is not to be chewed. Amber will shatter under pressure and break off. At no point have we as a safety-conscious UK retailer recommended that they are to be chewed on. Our full safety guidelines can be found here.

Cleansing Crystals with the Full Moon
All you want to know about cleansing and re-tuning your crystals with Full Moon energy.
My ultra favourite way of energetically cleansing crystals is with the lunar energy of the Full Moon. I often get asked a lot of questions when it comes to cleansing or re-tuning crystals in the moonlight, so I’m going to answer them all right here in 1 place for you!

• Why do you need to cleanse the crystals?
When I use the word “cleanse” it means an energetic cleansing, not a physical one. Another way to look at it is a re-tuning of the crystal’s energy. When we work with a crystal it can absorb some of the negative energy and change its vibrational frequency. It is much like playing the guitar. After you have played it for a while you need to re-tune it to get it back into perfect playing order. The same goes for the crystals. After you have worked with them you want to help them get their energy and vibrational frequency back to its original perfect state.

• How often do you need to cleanse crystals?
This is something you use your intuition on and what feels right to you. If it is a crystal you work with often, then put it out at every Full Moon. On the flip side of that, if you have crystals that typically are not worked with then once or twice a year should be sufficient. If you feel your crystal needs cleansing between the full moons then there are other cleansing methods available that you can do anytime.

• Are there any crystals that shouldn’t go in the moonlight?

No. This is the one method that is safe for ALL crystals. That is why it is my favourite cleansing method. The only thing you need to watch out for is if it is going to rain or not. Some crystals, such as Selenite, are not safe to be out in the rain. They are the same crystals that should avoid water.

• What if I forget to put them out on the full moon?

Don’t worry if you can’t put them out on the day of the full moon or if you forget that day. The lunar energy is at its strongest for 3 days. The day before, the day of the full moon, and the day after. You can put them out any of those 3 days. You do not have to put them out for all 3 days. One night is plenty. However, if you feel your crystals need more cleansing or simply because you feel they are loving the moonlight, then go ahead and put them out all 3 nights. This is totally up to you.

• What time do I need to put them outside?

Anytime after it gets dark is a perfect time. Dusk, when the sun is setting is ok too. This way the crystals that should avoid sunlight, such as Amethyst, are not put out until the sun has gone down.

• When do I bring the crystals inside and do I need to do anything special with them?
Bring them inside in the morning. You do not have to have them outside for any set length of time. There are some crystals that can eventually fade if left in direct sunlight. You do not need to do anything special to handle them while bringing them inside. Just bring them on in and put them in their normal homes around your house.

• What if I can’t put them outside? Will they still get cleansed if I put them on my window ledge?
That is ok if you can’t put them outside. You can put them in front of your window. I usually do this with some of my jewellery or crystals like Selenite that I do not like to leave outside. If you have a window that moonlight can come into, I feel that is the best. However, if you can’t do that, don’t worry, any window will do. The energy is all around us. It won’t be as strong as it would be outside, but you work with what you have.

• It is cloudy or raining. I can’t see the moon. Will my crystals still be cleansed? Does this affect the moon’s energy?
Regardless if we can see the moon or not, the energy is still there and is still affecting us and the planet. Clouds do not affect the moon’s energy. It is still there and still shining, even though the clouds are in the way of us seeing it. If it is raining, just make sure that you put out crystals that are ok to get wet. For example, keep Selenite and Malachite inside because the rain will damage them. Crystals like the Quartz family (Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Smoky Quartz) are all safe to be outside in the rain. You might want to give them a little quick rinse under running tap water when they come in, though, to cleanse them of anything the rain might have left on them.

• It’s very cold outside. Does extreme cold weather hurt crystals?
No, it will not. Remember, crystals are born from our Mother Earth and have been around long before there was heating or air conditioning. They will be just fine, especially since it is a gradual cool down. I have large Rose Quartz and Quartz clusters outside that have been in snow, ice, negative degree temperatures without any complications.

• Do I need to put them on or in anything special?
No. You can put them on a tray, in a box, or just carry them outside. Whatever way works best for you. I have done it all! I often just carry the plastic bead boxes I use to hold my crystals and put that outside. You can leave them closed or open them. I personally prefer to open the boxes. I have put them out in small wooden trays or even a larger “breakfast in bed” tray. I also have used a small mirror before. This one I love for my favourite pieces because I feel it helps to amplify the energies. It is by no means necessary, though.

• Can I put my crystal jewellery outside to be cleansed?
Yes, you sure can. In fact, I recommend it. The crystals I cleanse and charge by the moonlight the most are my pendants and bracelets that I wear all of the time. Make sure they are in something that will keep them safe like a bowl, a tray with sides, or even keep them inside on your window ledge.

• Do I need to put all of my crystals out at every full moon?
No, you do not. Follow your intuition on this one. I personally place out the crystals I work with the most — like my crystal jewellery — every full moon. Otherwise, crystals that I have not worked with I typically only put them out once, maybe twice a year. You do not have to put all of your crystals out at every full moon. For those of us with large collections and even quite a few large crystals, this would be quite a task! However, if you have a few crystals you work with on a very regular basis, those are the ones you would want to put out every time… if you remember. You can also do any of the other cleansing methods in between the full moons or if you forget to put them out.

Where are they?

Woh! I have to stop you there and clear something up. 

Prior to 2013 Baltic amber jewellery started to become popular for use on babies for teething pain and was nicknamed amber baby teething jewellery beads. Baltic amber has always been around as jewellery for people and even pets!

So what happened in 2013?

Due to the jewellery name change, it had to be reclassified as a teething toy when it is not. There is no classification for amber jewellery and this was precautionary as a 'catch-all' change. As a toy, it has small parts and it is widely believed that it is likely that the baby will chew on the amber. Amber is a resin and is not to be chewed as it can shatter (hence the small parts warnings).

We at Love Amber x only sell jewellery for children and adults. We don't call this jewellery amber teething jewellery as it is not to be chewed as chewing is dangerous. You won't find our jewellery called or described as that on our website. We also cannot sell jewellery under 13cm long.

But I have seen it called colic, reflux and amber teething bracelets on other sites?

If you have seen these marketed for babies and mentioning colic, reflux and teething or have pictures of babies and children under 3 wearing them then you are on an unregulated site and will most definitely not be a UK genuine brand. 

If you look at the address or contact details on the site (which under consumer protection regulations it should have) then you will see it is not a UK site. It will also make returning difficult and may take ages to get to you. Buyer beware.

Silky mums are mothers who generally prefer a medicated hospital birth, disposable nappies, bottle-feeding or breastfeeding/expressing, cot sleeping, sleeping training techniques, use a pram and are pro-vaccination.

Crunchy mums usually choose the natural option instead of the mass-produced or medicated one. So that’s a natural (drug-free) home birth, placenta encapsulating, breastfeeding (not just for the 6 months recommended but until the child weans themselves), anti-vaccination, baby-wearing, co-sleeping, bed sharing, cloth nappies, attachment parenting, natural medicine, organic eating, and (sometimes) homeschooling or unschooling.

Scrunchy mums if you’re a bit of crunchy and silky, then apparently you’re a scrunchy mum - a term combining the two words, not a reference to your choice of hair bobble!

I don't think either side of the spectrum is more right than the other. Everyone parents in their own way. And all parents try to do what they think is best for their kids. If we had found a perfect way to parent, all of our kids would be the same and no one would ever argue. I have come across many arguments on social media from two opposing groups. It makes me sad as we should be helping each other as parenting is hard enough! In all honesty, I find these categories offensive and stereotypical. However, from 1 January all teething gels for babies that contain lidocaine - a mild local anaesthetic - will only be available from behind pharmacy counters.

Personally, the idea of a numbing gel being swallowed by a baby did not sit well with me. The numbing effect of these if swallowed can temporarily paralyse throat muscles making swallowing difficult. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this year found that using lidocaine solution as a pain reliever for babies could cause seizures and even death. 

The move follows a recent investigation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which said that there is little evidence teething gels containing an anaesthetic are effective at easing pain. 

Instead, the health officials said they should only be used as a second-line treatment, after attempting other methods to ease a babies' pain, such as using cooled teething rings or massaging the gums.

The review also said pharmacists should discuss these issues and risks with parents before selling them the gels.

Dr Sarah Branch, deputy director of MHRA’s Vigilance and Risk Management of Medicines (VRMM), said “Our review showed there is a lack of evidence of benefit to using teething gels. 

”To help babies and children with teething, parents and caregivers should try non-medicine options such as rubbing or massaging the gums or a teething ring. 

“We want to make sure you get the right information about teething. 

”If your child continues to have problems with teething, talk to your pharmacist or healthcare professional about the best options.“

The MHRA’s investigation was prompted by a warning issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this year, which found that using lidocaine solution as a pain reliever for babies could cause seizures and even death.

In this new report, the MHRA stressed that products in the UK are less strong than those sold in the US, and as such, carry a very small risk of side effects.

In fact, they found only 447 reports of lidocaine poisoning to children had been made over a three-year period to the UK National Poisons Information Service - of which 437 caused 'minor' or 'no' harm. The remaining ten were 'unknown'.

If you’re concerned about the effects of teething gels, there are alternatives you can turn to to help soothe your baby’s pain.

“All medication, even that available over the counter and from supermarket shelves, carries risks and the chance of an adverse reaction from an individual,” Sarah Ockwell-Smith, mother of four and author of 'The Gentle Parenting Book'  previously told The Independent. 

“These risks, however, are very small and the rigorous testing that pharmaceutical products go through ensures that medication is as safe as possible, especially for babies and children. 

“Many parents, however, decide that they would prefer to treat their baby's teething pain naturally. There are many natural teething alternatives available in high street chemists, but my three top tips are as follows:

1. If you are breastfeeding, express some breastmilk and use a small lolly mould to make a breastmilk lolly for your baby to suck, the cold can relieve the pain.
2. Silicone teething jewellery is a great investment. These are designed for mum to wear (as bangles or necklaces) so they're always to hand and babies can chomp down heavily into them. The pressure here helps to alleviate discomfort in the gums
3. Offer lots of hugs and cuddles. Skin-to-skin contact, for example in the bath, is even better. Hugging helps to release the hormone oxytocin which has a mild pain relieving effect. Babies who are teething are usually clingier than usual - go with it and give them all the love and reassurance they need as much as you can."

Anbesol also contains this ingredient but it is not mentioned above but I suspect this will no longer be freely available to purchase in supermarkets. Its always being recommended by other parents for its great numbing powers. We will just have to wait and see.

What colour is amber? Amber is a natural resin comes in many different shades. Up until today, there are more than 250 different shades and 7 main colours of Amber identified. They vary from yellow to orange and even white. Green and blue colours are also distinguished; however, they tend to be very rare. All of these mentioned colours are commonly used when making jewellery.

There are two main factors, which are known to influence Amber’s colour. One of these factors is bubble inclusions that are found in this natural resin. The main explanation of why these bubbles affect the colour of Amber is because they block light that goes through this gemstone. These small disturbances in lighting are what causes Amber to form in different colours. The second main factor that determines the colour of this natural resin is the tree source. Research on fossil resin indicates that some colours are found only in certain trees. It is also worthwhile to mention that the colour of this gemstone can be modified by either dying or heating it too.

Choose a necklace or anklet with the hand tied knots in between each bead. Paediatricians warn of the risk of choking if the beads are put in the baby's mouth and inhaled, which could happen if the necklace breaks and the beads scatter.

• As a safety precaution, there should be a hand-tied knot between every bead, as well as the fastener. This structure ensures that if the necklace is strongly yanked or pulled, only one bead if any will come loose, rather than all of the beads.
• Supervise your child when they are wearing the necklace so that you can act quickly and ensure no beads are swallowed if the necklace does break.

Consider the type of fastening clasp. Necklaces and indeed any jewellery placed around a child's neck, pose a significant risk of choking and strangulation. However, there are specific designs that will ensure the necklace breaks under stress if it becomes entangled, reducing this risk. The screw clasp design keeps the necklace secure around the child's neck and is difficult for a child to unhook, which keeps the child from taking the necklace off on their own. The key is to ensure that it does not dangle down so it does not become caught on anything in the first place and to prevent chewing.

Avoid products marketed as "copal amber." Copal is an immature resin (typically less than 250 years old) often passed off as amber. Unlike amber, copal is not a fossilised and hardened resin.

• Do not purchase amber necklaces that advertise amber from Columbia, Madagascar or Kenya. These geographic areas have rich Copal mines, but do not produce true amber.
• You can test if your product is copal or amber by rubbing with a solvent such as acetone or alcohol. Copal will soften and get sticky when the solvent is applied whereas true amber will remain hard and the solvent will simply evaporate off.
• If you do perform this test, be sure to wash the necklace carefully with detergent and warm water before putting the necklace on your child!

Avoid discounted amber merchandise. The price of genuine Baltic amber products begin around £15 and can be as much as £50 for one necklace. If a necklace is for sale at a huge discount, question the vendor about its authenticity.

Pay attention to the colour. Natural Baltic amber comes in a variety of colours and tones. Because amber is a natural material, expect some colour inconsistency between beads and inclusions (organic material) such as grass or even insects. Common Baltic amber colours are honey, butterscotch, cognac, dark cherry and green. Cherry Red amber is made by heating.

Inspect the necklace frequently to ensure that it is in good condition. Look for any missing beads or broken pieces. Also, check the screw clasps for cracks.

• Amber is an incredibly hard resin, so damage shouldn't happen often with a high-quality product. Amber, however, will shatter if crushed.
• As a safety precaution, do not put a damaged necklace on your child.

Clean the necklace with some lemon juice, warm water and an old toothbrush. After several weeks or months of use, the necklace may become grimy and require cleaning.

• Fill a bowl with warm water and add a small amount of lemon juice.
• Dip your necklace in the bowl and gently, using a downward and back and forth motion, start brushing your necklace
• Don't scrub too hard to avoid damaging the string.
• Allow to air dry or dry off with a towel.
• If the stones look dull after this process, rub a small amount of olive oil on the stones to recover the sheen.

Cleansing crystals regularly is necessary as they will absorb negative energy. The bracelet will invariably absorb vibrations not only from you but from your environment. To create positive energy within your crystals, you need to cleanse them frequently. Generally, every two weeks should be sufficient. If you have been through a particularly difficult period it would be advisable to cleanse them to clear any negative energy absorbed during this period. This is important as their effectiveness for healing and to ensure you are not affected by negative vibrations within the stones. If you have been using them to heal health issues or when you were in a negative frame of mind, they would probably have absorbed your negative energy. This is why it is a good idea to purify them on a regular basis.

There are many different methods to cleanse crystals. The easiest and safest way to cleanse your bracelet is to hold it under running water for a short while. The water should be lukewarm in temperature and hold them under running water for a minute should be sufficient to cleanse the crystals.

To charge your crystals there are, again, many different methods. The simplest method is to place your bracelet in natural sunlight or moonlight for a while to absorb the natural energy. Please note that the bracelet should not be left out in strong sunlight for more than an hour as it has a tendency to make some crystals such as Amethyst fade.

To program the bracelet after cleansing and charging for a specific use, sit quietly away from distractions and strong electrical devices. Hold the crystal in front of you, clear your mind and focus on the stone. Focus on the specific energy or intentions that you wish to program the crystal with, and transmit the energies and thoughts from your mind directly to the stone. Be clear and direct when doing this and don't try to confuse or overload the crystal with different thoughts and energies. Do this until you feel happy that the required thoughts and energies have been transmitted to the stone.

Amber Jewellery

Clean with plain warm water and a soft cloth and rub with olive oil. Leave in the sun or warm airing cupboard to recharge for a couple of hours Keep perfumed oils and body lotions away from it. Keep away from direct heat such as radiators as amber will crack and shatter. If there is no sun, a couple of hours in your bra will work too :-) Avoid detergents and cleansers they leave a residue on the amber.

With proper care, your amber will remain beautiful for a lifetime...
