Claire Lintern's Blog from Salone
Claire Lintern, an experienced science teacher from Bucks, working at the Bishop Jane Allen Middleton High School (UMC), Goderich, for the whole 2012/13 academic year, is still finding innovative and challenging ways of teaching her subject without one single piece of science equipment (see photo of her new laboratory). Her blog illustrates some of the hard challenges and yet some of the amazing rewards which Extra Mile volunteers are gaining during their Sierra Leone programmes.

Update from Sandy Wright (Extra Mile in Wolston)
Sandy and her friends have been working incredibly hard for the last few months, holding some fantastic fund-raising events for Extra Mile. Sandra Stables and Sandy herself ran a Farmer’s Market stall at St. Margaret’s Primary School on the Friday afternoon, followed by a Silent Auction and Pudding Night that same evening. If that wasn’t enough Sandy and another friend ran the Coventry Half Marathon on the Sunday, and later in the month a stall at the Christmas Fayre in the village, altogether raising the fantastic sum of over £2000.00. She even had time to donate a large box of school materials for Extra Mile’s new, ‘free’ school. So many kind and thoughtful residents of Wolston gave so generously and Extra Mile thanks them for their wonderful support.

The Great Salford City College Bake-Off
It is wonderful to see so many people from Salford City College taking part in the fund-raising events promoted by Dr. Jane Bentham, an Extra Mile volunteer in June 2012. The great Salford City College Bake-Off began in November and is continuing into the new year.
A massive thank you to everyone who baked and who came to sample the cakes, it was a great success! I was truly overwhelmed by how many people attended and how exceptional all the cakes were (see pictures below!).
We have raised £47.65 so far for ‘Extra Mile’ and four members of staff are through to the next heat in December 2012.
Suit Yourself Day!
Dr. Jane Bentham, an Extra Mile volunteer who worked at Services Secondary School, Juba, Freetown, Sierra Leone in June 2012 continues to inspire both staff and students at her college to help contribute to helping education in this deprived, ex-British, colony.
Thomas Moore and Chelsea McNulty (two BTEC Science students) organised a "suit yourself" day on 20th December where staff and students were asked to wear posh suits/evening dress and donate to Extra Mile. They collected money around college and raised a magnificent total of £155, as well as enjoying themselves.
