Update from Freetown - Week 1

Hi Everyone,
Just catching up with you from Sierra Leone; with a small crash, yet another puncture and a two hour traffic jam.

On a day when the searing heat drains every drop from your body I slow down and grab a roadside drink. Before I could pay her my glasses are thrown off and the money spills out of the car. A passing vehicle has ploughed into the back of the jeep. Another dent; I've stopped counting now. The whole front wing 'stove in' of the other jeep, no blame, I don't ask for compensation unless its really serious and nobody's insurance gives any payback.

Earlier this week as I returned to Freetown in the red dust cloud of a massive excavation truck a herd of 20 young goats,

Extra Mile in 2012

Mike is heading back to Sierra Leone in early February 2012 for a month, to undertake a number of tasks for the charity.

· Preparing for this year’s volunteers, mainly at secondary level;
· Preparing for the Head Teacher Training at Easter 2012 with Tim Feast;
· Networking with current and new head teachers;
· Meeting Goderich elders to discuss the location for the new Extra Mile School;
· ‘Rescue’ from docks, the two barrels which were shipped in January bringing laptops, textbooks, clothes, hymn books and Bibles from UK;
· Teaching in a number of classes at various schools (in his ‘spare’ time).

I’m sure we’ll hear from him as he tries to cope with the many difficulties he’ll face just to successfully complete the very simplest of tasks to help children and schools in just one small community in Sierra Leone. We wish him the best of luck, great perseverance but above all plenty of patience, no doubt he’ll need it!

Seasons Greetings from Sierra Leone

Seasons Greetings to all our friends all over the world!

We thank you all for your hard work and
enthusiasm contributed over the past year.
We wish you all a very happy festive period and hope you have a
happy time together with family and friends.

Extra Mile

Extra Mile is a UK registered Charity helping to bring education to the street children of war-torn Sierra Leone. Its ten year mission is to recruit volunteers to teach in English-speaking schools, help train its teachers and open its own ‘free’ school.

Short Term Volunteer Options
We can often arrange placements as short as 1 week. Short term placements are often perfect to fit within shorter holidays, career breaks or even as a taster for further volunteering experiences. Short term placements are a significant source of skills and time which can significantly benefit our participating schools. Even if you are currently working, at high-school or university or a recent graduate you can probably still participate in our project.

Professional Volunteering Opportunities for Teachers
We specialize in taking your skills as experienced educators and creating appropriate placements. We devise Sierra Leone based volunteer work in schools and institutes around Freetown.
Group Volunteering Trips Abroad
Group volunteering trips are available for school and university students over the fall, summer, spring break, or winter break. Contact us for more information on these trips.
