We caught Dan Deacon’s set at Sessions 2012 and were immediately blown away – not just by Deacon’s shenanigans, but by the venue. The state-of-the-art gear used. The feeling of the room. The vibe was palpable.

Ever since, we’ve been wanting to put some of our favourite acts on that stage and show people what we’ve always been saying: that Adelaide is home to world-class talent. Of course, locals like The Shaolin Afronauts and The Transatlantics have played as part of Sessions and, unsurprisingly, blew people away. But we’re talking about something different.

The Festival Centre approached play / pause / play to put on another #pppparty as part of Sessions 2014, and we pretty quickly realised that a lot of the acts we wanted to see perform in Space Theatre were on Pilot Records. Collaborating with Pilot on their annual festival has been an absolute honour, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with.

It’s our most ambitious show yet, and it’s gonna be a huge party, featuring a lineup of Adelaide’s best electronic, psychedelic and experimental musicians.

We kick things off at 4pm with a free party outside in the amphitheatre. Slamagotchi and No Birds will be making beats, and Veggie Velo, Red House Vintage Café and Evercream Gelati serving eats. All free.

At 6pm, the party moves inside, with Glass Skies kicking things off, followed by Sparkspitter, Brokers, Oddessa and Question Question, before exploding in a whirlwind of colour and dancing with Urtekk. Join us. It’s just going to be the best, you guys.

PilotFest 2014 takes place at Space Theatre and the Amphitheatre in the Adelaide Festival Centre, on Friday January 24. Entertainment in the Amphitheatre runs from 4-6 and is free. Tickets to the performances in Space Theatre are $30 Adult, $28 Concession.

The Jade Monkey is dead.

Long live The Jade.

It’s been a long, painful 12 months seeing the mind-numbing, senseless arguments and hurdles the Jade Monkey crew have had to deal with, but seeing the new venue it all seems worth it.

While play / pause / play has been pretty quiet blog-wise, podcast-wise and #PPPParty-wise in 2013, we’ve been doing heaps of work behind the scenes. It’s actually been a pretty huge year for us. But you’ll hear about all that soon enough.

Tonight, we party.

Our favourite Victorian band, The Stiffys, are visiting to tell us about boner triggers and high fives and kick flips and generally how to just have a really nice time.

Our favourite miscreants, Central Deli Band, play one last show for us before Matt Hayward moves overseas.

Our favourite local pop funtime band, 20th Century Graduates, reunite for one night only.

Our favourite solo melancholy disco act, FIRS, joins us to kick off the festivities.

Last year’s awards weren’t without a little controversy, but it was  great to see everyone coming together to celebrate the scene.

The 2013 awards ceremony takes place at Fowlers Live on Thursday October 24, and PPP DJs will again be spinning an all-Adelaide set in the courtyard for the pre-drinks session from 5:30.

And hey, this year we even got nominated for an award! Pretty chuffed with that.

The Stiffys aren’t just our favourite band from Melbourne. They’re also pretty much our favourite thing on the Internet.

Since the last time we spoke about them, they’ve launched a web series that involves drinking lots of Passion Pop and giving advice to fans/yelling at the camera.

After their debut EP, The Stiffys debut album, they’re back with their first surprisingly non-erection-related song, Champagne.

The Stiffys are currently touring the country to pal around and have a couple of drinks and chat to ladies and high-five new friends.

We asked drummer Adam [wearing awesome shades in the photo above] a few questions to get the scoop:

Your songwriting has a unique depth. What are your influences?

HI LUKE IT’S ADAM FROM THE STIFFYS HERE THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT INFLUENCE OUR MUSIC AND OUR DAY TO DAY LIVES SUCH AS SLAM DUNKS TRAMPOLINES SHAQUILLE O’NEAL TONY HAWK PRO SKATER TWO ON THE PLAYSTATION WE PLAY THAT GAME ALL THE TIME AND WE KNOW ALL THE TRICKS WE CAN GET LIKE TWENTY MILLION POINTS EACH IN THAT GAME OUR OTHER INFLUENCES INCLUDE DARRYL SOMERS RED ROOSTER CHAMPAGNE RAINBOWS HANDSTANDS KICK FLIPS BOOGIE BOARDS AND SIZZLER’S ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET

How’s the tour gone so far?

THE TOUR HAS GONE REALLY REALLY WELL SO FAR IN TASMANIA WE HAD A REALLY NICE TIME ESPECIALLY AT THE ROYAL OAK IN LAUNCESTON THE BAR STAFF GAVE US ALL OF THESE DRINKS AND WE WERE LIKE SAY WHAT AND THEN WE PLAYED THE SHOW AND THEY WERE ALL LIKE HERE GUYS HAVE SOME MORE DRINKS AND WE WERE ALL LIKE SAY WHAT THEN WE PLAYED IN NEW SOUTH WALES AND ALL THESE GIRLS CAME TO OUR SHOW AT BRIGHTON UP BAR AND WE BASICALLY DID ALL OF THESE BREAKDANCING MOVES IN FRONT OF THEM AND THEY WERE LIKE WHOA THE STIFFYS YOU GUYS ARE SO COOL AND SO GOOD AT BREAKDANCING

What’s your favourite thing about Adelaide?

HI LUKE WE LIKE THAT A LOT OF OUR GOOD FRIENDS LIKE OUR BEST FRIENDS THE BEARDS LIVE THERE AND WE ALSO LIKE ALL OF THE NATURES AND IT’S ALSO WHERE ALL THE REALLY GOOD WINE GETS MADE I’M PRETTY SURE THAT’S WHERE WE GET OUR CHAMPAGNE FROM GUYS YOU CAN TELL IT’S GOOD QUALITY WHEN IT MAKES YOU FEEL A BIT SICK IN THE STOMACH AND YOU WAKE UP AFTER A LONG NAP WITH A HEADACHE ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS KEEP DRINKING CHAMPAGNE AND THE HEADACHE GOES AWAY BUT THE STOMACH ACHE COMES BACK IT’S A BALANCING ACT GUYS AND THE STIFFYS ARE THE MASTERS AT IT AM I RIGHT EVERYBODY

What’s your favourite thing to order from Red Rooster?

WE USUALLY GET ROOSTER ROLLS AND SOMETIMES CHICKEN MCNUGGETS THEY KEEP TELLING US THAT THEY DON’T SELL ALCOHOL THERE SO WE JUST BRING IN OUR OWN DRINKS NOW GUYS WE’RE NOT ALLOWED IN A LOT OF RED ROOSTERS NOW I THINK IT’S BECAUSE WE’RE TOO ROWDY

Do you do any other skateboard tricks than kickflips?

WE KNOW ALL THE ROLLERBLADING MOVES BUT THE KICKFLIP IS OUR FAVOURITE FOR EXAMPLE WE BOTH KNOW HOW TO DO ENDO’S AND TAILWHIP’S AND POGO JUMPS AND FRONT SIDE BOARD SLIDES AND TRIPLE BACKFLIPS AND AROUND THE WORLD’S AND WALK THE DOG’S AND JUMPY GRINDS YOU KNOW ALL THE STANDARD MOVES

If you could be any animal for one day, what would you be and what would you do?

WE WOULD BOTH PROBABLY BE EAGLES BECAUSE THEY ARE MAJESTIC CREATURES WHO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO NEVER GIVE UP ON OUR DREAMS

I like your uniforms. Have you guys ever been on a submarine?

WE LIKE TO DRESS UP A BIT AND MAKE A BIG SNAZZY AT OUR SHOWS THAT USUALLY IMPRESSES EVERYBODY ESPECIALLY THE LADIES BUT IT HASN’T GOTTEN US INVITED ON TO ANY SUBMARINES JUST YET BUT WE’RE HOPING THAT ONE DAY IT WILL IT’S BEEN JASON’S DREAM TO RIDE ON A SUBMARINE EVER SINCE HE SAW ONE IN A DREAM HE SAID HE HAD LAST NIGHT

Have you ever been in a Demolition Derby?

I’VE SEEN DEMOLITION MAN STARRING SYLVESTER STALLONE AND WESLEY SNIPES ABOUT FIVE HUNDRED TIMES AND I CAN BASICALLY QUOTE THE MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH LIKE YOU KNOW IT’S GOT THEM BEING FROZEN AND WAKING UP IN THE FUTURE AND EVERYTHING’S ALL WEIRD AND EVERY TIME SYLVESTER STALLONE DID A SWEAR A PIECE OF PAPER CAME OUT AND HE HAD TO PAY A FINE HAHA GREAT JOKES THE FUTURE AND WHAT WAS WITH THAT PART WITH THE THREE SEASHELLS I’M NOT A FUTURE SCIENTIST BUT I THINK TOILET PAPER PROBABLY WORKS BETTER THAN SEASHELLS YOU GUYS

It’s got me thinking, we’ve had a pretty big month in the Adelaide music scene. We’ve seen:

– Premier Jay Weatherill suggested the State’s Industry Participation Advocate could extend local business participation in government projects to music, meaning more money to local artists without having to find more money.

– On top of his previous statements regarding the number of venues in Adelaide, our Thinker In Residence for Live Music in Adelaide Martin Elbourne posited we could use a better online gig guide and gigs ending before public transport does.

– Pilot Records turned 1 and hosted a warehouse birthday party featuring the dual-launch of new EPs from Urtekk and Question Question.

– Adelaide-based Internet Radio/Video station SoundPond co-founders Adam Daze and Todd Skipper, along with Assistant Manager Erick ‘E’ Watson spent 50 hours locked in the studio performing crazy challenges to promote their fundraiser. The process helped them raise over $16,000 towards starting moving to new premises and expanding, plus a $10,000 donation from Adelaide City Council.

– Format announced the details for their triumphant return party, including an exhibition called Never Mind and afterparty happily entitled MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

– Archers and Console Warriors get the nod from judges to open the festivities at Spin Off Festival.

– And, of course, we’ve seen stacks of great new releases from local talent including super-catchy pop gems from Es Ist Super and The Rocketeers, as well as the gorgeous debut EP from Naomi Keyte.
