tl;dr version: Ianto Ware is bringing together some important, knowledgeable people to chat to interested parties about how our current liquor/bar licensing structure could be improved to take into account small venues and live music venues. It's more for people who are interesting in setting up spaces than artists, but we know the local and State government are open to change on this topic, so this will be a pretty damn interesting talk.

The aim of this forum is to connect the current interest in city vibrancy with those in the business of making it happen: the small bars, music venues, performance and arts spaces vital to making Adelaide culturally active. This follows recent discussions between those enterprises and various other stakeholders as to the often negative impact of regulatory frameworks and liquor licensing law on their sustainability.

Our guest panellist is licensing and cultural policy expert John Wardle, who drove changes to restrictive Place of Public Entertainment and liquor licensing law in NSW, as well as working on the Raise the Bar Campaign. John has provided policy advice to federal and state governments on best practice for supporting live entertainment venues and the music industry.

This forum responds to a widespread recognition that, due to legal and regulatory changes made in the late Nineties and early Thousands, Adelaide has lost many of the small enterprises that drove its sense of cultural vibrancy. Preliminary research by Renew Adelaide indicates that the city area saw a decrease in venues hosting live, original music from a rough average of 25 per week in 1997 to just 7 per week in 2003, with the number of original acts performing weekly decreasing by 75% in the same time. If we apply Arts Victoria’s 2011 economic impact assessment of venue based live music in Victoria to Adelaide, such a decrease amounts to a loss of 321,000 visitors annually to the city, and a total annual economic loss of just under $30mil. Most of the venues we’ve lost were small bars, providing live music as a means to build their audience. Following their closure, the city cinemas – including the Regent, Wallis Academy and Greater Union, all closed down. That industry collapse is equally reflected in Elizabeth Raupach’s 2010 Theatre Spaces and Venues Audit for ArtsSA, in which she notes a corresponding decrease in the theatre sector, and a perception that “Adelaide is now suffering from a lack of investment in arts infrastructure and that this has a negative impact on the State’s reputation as a cultural leader.”

Raupach also noted that a “culture of mutual cooperation can help solve some of the problems”. In that spirit, we invite those interested in increasing cultural activity and vibrancy within the city area to meet and discuss the kind of city we want to see and the regulations and legal changes that might be required to get us there.

When I heard that the first support acts for The Beards' Christmas Show was a band called The Stiffys, I thought they were just some rock band from Melbourne.

When someone posted on The Beards' wall on Facebook and asked "Do The Stiffys sing songs about erections?" I thought that would be pretty funny, but unlikely.

When I arrived at Jive and saw the massive setlist taped to a speaker, I still somehow thought "Nah, that's just a joke. That's just the band making fun of The Beards or something."

I was wrong on every account.

Well, except the part about them coming from Melbourne. That was right. And I guess you could kinda call them a rock band, but they were just bass and drums. And the drummer didn't have any cymbals. Or a snare. He did have a cooking pot to add some higher-range sounds in, though.

They also dressed in sailor outfits. Or "as seamen", as one friend put it.

And while such a single-minded joke can get old quickly, thankfully, like our headline act, they had the stage presence to make it work every time. Though, unlike our headline act, it wasn't because they believed in the ultimate awesomeness of their subject matter, but instead the youthful exuberance and absolute stokededness at being on stage that made it work.

From the way each song was introduced with its title read out in full ["Touch Me On My Pants, bracket, On My Doodle, close-bracket"] to the lyrics such as "I've had sex plenty of times, I've had sex plenty of times, I've had sex plenty of times" to the way that the singer would congratulate everyone on doing a great job [on every song], it was like watching a kid play his first show and have the crowd reaction outdo his wildest expectations.

Except they were in their mid-twenties. And all the songs were about boners.

They're also the fun-est band to follow on Facebook out of all of the bands.
20th Century Graduates put out a new song this morning [three months after they broke up] so we made a longer episode this week.

That means Episode 23 features handclaps, cruisy-ness, beards, avant garde-ness, catchy rock-ness and a new track from a band that broke up in January.
Every year at Fuse, one showcasing band is picked to head to the UK to showcase at the Great Escape Festival.

Finally, after weeks of speculation, it's been announced that The Killgirls have been [unsurprisingly, and quite deservingly] selected.

While Fuse themselves don't seem to've announced anything, MusicSA broke the news, and the band themselves have announced it on their Facebook page.

Before they head over there to become The Next Big Thing, they're closing the Adelaide Festival at the 'End Of The World' Party at Barrio this Saturday.

No doubt it'll be one hell of a celebration.

EDIT: It looks like Fuse announced it on their own Facebook page soon after this was posted.

Last week I promised we'd return to the usual format of five songs per week. And we did. For a week. Then we hit the big 2-0, and there was just so much to squeeze in, we wound up with seven. It was nearly six, but then I was sat at the pub and writing about how I'd play Doe next week and just thought "What the fuck are you doing, man? That's dumb." and then I was like "Yeah, you're right." and then I finished my steak and chips and beer and went home and recorded this and it rules.
Today The Jade Monkey officially announced that they will be shutting down operations on Twin Street because the developers of a new hotel on Grenfell Street do not want a live music venue immediately behind their new building.

For the developers, this decision is a small victory.

For thousands of Adelaide music fans, this decision is heartbreaking.

All of us live, work and/or play in the Adelaide City Council-governed area, and we understand that balancing those three areas isn't easy.

In a fantastically written blog post [http://renewadelaide.wordpress.com/2011/12/22/a-very-special-christmas-blog-post-the-award-for-the-stupidest-piece-of-advice-ive-been-given-in-2011/], Ianto Ware from Renew Adelaide hypothesises, using real figures, that the closing or cessation of live music in only six venues in Adelaide's East End has cost the city "about $5 million in lost income, lost jobs, lost food and drink sales per year, and about 53,000 lost city visitors, averaging about $94 each a year."

What that means is, it's harder for us to play, there's less work, and the idea of living here becomes less attractive.

The Jade Monkey will probably find a new home somewhere else.

But where?
When?
Who will fund its move?

Most most importantly: Why should it have to move at all?

How many more venues must be shut down before residential developers are forced to take 'proximity to a well-established live music venue' into account?

Don't just sit there and let this keep happening. Go to http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/development and tell the Adelaide City Council that it's no OK by typing a letter into the small "Development" form on the right-hand side of the page. If you're unsure what to write, feel free to copy and paste this blog post.
Adelaide's brightest, happiest, colourfulest band made a Metal song. And it rules.

One day, False Idol was hanging out with Harry and Phebe and joking about if they had a different name that didn't quite represent their sound the way 'Radio Spectacular!!!' does - something like, say, 'Dragonslayer'.

He later made the image you see in the video embedded above, and they promised to write him a song in return, then pulled him in to get some extra vocals in.

The result is "The Dragon Slayer Cometh", and as you can see above, it maintains their fun-having sound, while also being pretty damn rockin'.

Also: did you know Harry was such a facemeltingly awesome guitarist? Holy shitballs, man.

I don't remember the last time I've been so moved by a song.

Dan Fisher has proven his talent as one of the main songwriters in The Cooper Temple Clause - AKA "The Greatest Band That's Ever Been" - and though Red Kite doesn't feature the dark electronica of Tom Bellamy that made TCTC so intriguing, with only two songs released, Red Kite have already shown they're a band to get excited about.

At over nine minutes, their latest release, No Painter Of Note, initially feels remniscent of Vorn Doolette - AKA "The Only Solo Acoustic Guy I Can Stand" - and his insistance on fleshing out his tales rather than writing a three minute pop song.

As the song continues, it incorporates one of the best parts of Fisher's old band - only when the crescendo hits do you actually notice all that parts that have been slowly building around you.

No Painter Of Note begins its life born into melancholy, with the lyrics revolving around the theme of "I know that I paint a pretty poor picture of a man", but everything turns around with one line, and rises into a soundscape to rival Steering By Stars' most poignant.

This means the bands that have the songs and the right recordings suitable for radio. No atmospheric post-rock here no matter how much I love your sounds, and no dancy Indie if your recordings sound like ass, no matter how much I enjoy you live.

Now that Unearthed has its own radio station, it's about time to start making some noise again.

Episode 8: The Rules

The thing about triple j is that everyone seems to think that, if they just get played, they'll make it. Everyone seems to be under the impression that triple j just play music because it's good. Maybe one day that was true, but it's not really the case anymore. There's just too much 'good' music out there, and the station is aware of what happens when they start playing a band, so it's important for them to play bands that are 'ready'. That's part of why they've established Unearthed Radio: to play more Australian music 'just because it's good'. But getting on the main station takes more than that. You've gotta be building a following already. You've gotta have a reputation for a good live show. You've gotta have a look, a feel, a presence, a direction and a future.

The Rules have all that in spades.

Their EP is damn tight, sounds great and can fit on radio with no worries, but they're not just sitting around waiting to get picked up.

I saw their first gig and realised they must've been working together in other projects for a long time, but it was seeing this image that made me think "Oh, they're doing it right."

They call themselves "Biker Metal", which is an awesome invented genre and fits in well with their overall feel - primarily Carla's double-leather outfits, in-your-face attitude and and strong vocals.

They put their all into every show, and judging by their ever-increasing crowd sizes, word is starting to spread. Their set at The Killgirls EP Launch kicked all kinds of ass [all of the kinds] and proved that despite being a three-piece act, their stage presence is massive enough to handle a big stage.

They'll be proving that again at the Big Day Out this year.

Marrying the 'music performances where you wouldn't expect' philosophy of 6 on the St with the 'exploration of places you may walk past every day' experience of En Route, Moving Music is "an innovative Adelaide based project, which serves the purpose of activating various spaces in the city by injecting them with temporary architecture, interactive/public art, and live music. An audience of this project will be led through paths less travelled in the CBD to discover secret gig installations within alleyways, car parks, rooftops or anywhere else you normally would not appreciate such art forms."

We asked the man of the hour/tower of power/too sweet to be sour Sam Wright for more info:

So we all meet up at the given time and place - then what happens?
At 5.45pm, participants will embark on a tour of mystery, with very little clue on where we may end up next. There will be lots of walking, watching, speaking, befriending, clapping and questioning.

There will also be 4 bands performing which include Tom West (premiering brand new songs from his new album to be released later in the year), Steering By Stars with Choral Grief (an incredible collaboration that has never been seen before) and Shaolin Afronauts (the finest Afrobeat band from the Sahara to Saturn).

These bands will be revealed in 3 secret locations. I can’t say much more. As it is a secret.

This sounds like a pretty major project. What kind of team have you had in place to work with on this?
I am glad you had the foresight to tell me this. If only we had caught up over a drink 3 months earlier and you could have said "Sam, this is too much to take on for your January. Be wise about it."

It has been lots of work. There is a lot of micro management behind this kind of thing. All in all, this project has involved a bunch of artists, architects and music loving people, which formed a team of about 10 people.

My role has been to manage these lovely people and ensure that we are all having fun and getting it done. It has been a hugely rewarding experience to trial something like this in a legal format and we all hope that people come along to enjoy themselves and give feedback so we can make it better.

What kinds of things did you have to consider when scoping out potential places?
We judged spaces on a variety of things but some potential dream spaces can quickly become nightmares that we luckily avoided (with thanks to Adelaide City Council for warning us about such spaces).

You have to consider whether the space is privately owned and if it is, are those private land owners okay with you trialling something a bit weird. Most private land owners really want this kind of thing to happen.

You also have to consider how the space can be used. Some land owners are really particular about what you can and cannot do with these areas, which we totally respect.

For anyone that desires to use any public space in the city and wonders why we would choose one spot over another: it simply just comes down to the people of the city (private land owners, city council and the general public) on how ready they really are to accommodate artistic ventures in lesser known spaces. I like to think that we are well and truly ready to think outside the box on how we can use a city for what it has, rather than what it doesn’t have.

Did you have to go through heaps of council approval/red tape?
Adelaide City Council was really supportive in terms of administration and advice with respect to public/private spaces. We definitely thank them for that.

Hopefully one day there will be more reason for them to invest further amounts of money into the artistic endeavours of this city. The method to this madness you may ask? Well recent articles have suggested that at a certain time in this city (and currently in other cities) music has left our economy feeling mighty healthy as people go have a dinner/buy some drinks/see a movie after or before they go see a gig, art exhibition or piece of theatre. Go figure.
[Particularly this one! - *P*]

What does 'temporary architecture' mean?
It means that we have created something that supports a space in a way that is structural; however, you will only see it for a few hours, then never again.

Can you give us a hint about what kind of 'interactive/public art' we can expect?
Well, all Moving Music attendants will need to bring a secret with them on a piece of paper. That is one clue.

Is it safe to assume you're already planning the sequel/s?
We have only discussed what month could be good for the next one. That is as far as our planning has gotten.

Though I am still taking city paths on my bike that I have never been down before...

[Oh, and they're just the ones we haven't featured this week...] Steering By Stars - Collision [filmclip] Playing at Moving Music with Tom West and The Shaolin Afronauts this Saturday. Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! - Panther Shrine Playing at Plus One with Like Leaves and Sincerely, Grizzly this Saturday. The Sun And The Sky - Girl Launching their new EP, Ceremony at The Promethean with Little Two Eyes and Lyla this Friday. Colourphonics - Would They Be Proud? Playing Go Funk Yourself with Pumpometer, Cast Iron Pinata (Vic), Pimpin' Horus and Foray this Friday. The Shaolin Afronauts - Kilimanjaro Playing at Moving Music with Tom West and Steering By Stars this Saturday. Also discussed: Moving Music is an innovative Adelaide based project, which serves the purpose of activating various spaces in the city by injecting them with temporary architecture, interactive/public art, and live music. An audience of this project will be led through paths less travelled in the CBD to discover secret gig installations within alleyways, car parks, rooftops or anywhere else you normally would not appreciate such art forms. To attend this event, you MUST email attendmovingmusic@gmail.com to RSVP. For more information, visit: Moving Music --- Theme song this week is a Penmonicus remix of a False Idol song. Want to be featured? Email us. All tunes are used with the intention of promoting the acts, and I'm pretty sure all the songs are available free online somewhere anyway. But if you don't like it, please let me know and I'll remove your song as soon as I can. Direct link to podcast.
