First off all Kudos to Vaibhav Mittal who has given me a chance to interview his selected students by providing their mobile no’s.

Friends When I called this student studying in IIM Calcutta, I asked him various questions but I was not able to discover that unique answer which I wanted to discover. Then I started asking him that while preparation did he feel frustrated when he was not able to score good in mocks or when he was not able to crack quant questions at great speed. Then he replied yes & he narrated me one incident. Around March in the class he shouted once at one of the students who was disturbing him while solving question. Vaibhav sir saw & called him after the class & asked him why you get so much tense while studying. You must learn to enjoy your studies, but he replied that he has so many goals and ambitions & he don’t want to get distracted. Then sir replied you must go and do ART OF LIVING BASIC COURSE. That student asked continuously that sir tell me what’s it’s all about? but sir didn’t give any answer. Sir smiled do you trust me and are you ready to help me out in your preparation, then please go and do what I have asked you to do. He called his mom and asked her to get information about AOL course & luckily course was starting from next day. He joined that course which was of 6 days duration. Friends can any one imagine what happened, his life transformed. That boy became so calm and humble that one day someone hit his car from behind and he replied it’s ok. This course made him tension free and helped him to achieve some spirituality. This boy who get piqued by other’s disturbance and get himself involved in healthy discussion while making them explain that he is studying. Now he became the man of silence, it didn’t matter to him whether there is loud music playing if he want to study then nobody can stop him. In the last he told me that AOL part - 1 played major role in his life while cracking Cat because he was able keep his nerves cool and in control which helped him to take proper decisions.

So friends I was astonished by the X-Factor which I have discovered while interviewing him on mobile that keeping your nerves cool on the D - DAY is major task. He also told me whether you get any surprises or not also try to go with your proven strategy because end of the day you have chances that your strategy will mold to surprises but new strategy according to the situation will end up with nothing.

Hi All.

Good news for all of you is that I am back in India and the bad news associated with it is, BSNL is taking hell lot of time in activating broadband at my home.

Anyways. Here are the long awaited answers. I am not answering individual comments as that will be too long a post for all to read.

Here the answers go.

1. Both x and y are prime. All primes except 2 are odd. 3ab59 is odd. So 1 of x and y has to be even and other odd. The only even prime we know is 2 and thats smallest as well. Since x < y, x has to be 2.

2. Here the ‘click’ point should be ‘None of the 2 is -ve’. If you start from that you can easily figure out that p and q both are non -ve i.e. 0 and +ve. Hence p = 0 and q = 1024.

3. Answer is infinite. Most of you are correct.

4. I am asking what’s your dad’s name. You are telling me how many uncles you have. I am asking you to tell me 1 rational no. between the 2 given rational no. and am not asking how many between the 2. Simplest answer as per me is (1.3333….. + 1.444…..)/2. Yes answers of many are correct. I better suggest revise 9th class NCERT funda of inserting n rational numbers between 2 given rational numbers.
Say 1.333… = a and 1.444… = b and I ask you to tell me 2 rationals between a and b. Then let d = (b-a)/3. 1st rational number will be a + d and 2nd will be a + 2d. I hope this is enough for you to recollect the basics.

5. opinionated and all others, please note only a finite number of perfect numbers are known so far. If i can recall from my ‘getting older’ memory, there are 46 perfect numbers known and 2 of them are less then 100. so the answer should be 44. Howzz that??

6. Its the coolest one. Answer is 2 such pair and those are (1,99) and (99,1). Do u still need an explaination??

7. Ans is (42317-42)/99= 42275/99. Max 3 seconds job after u have read the ques. Please note in short i have also explained the process.

8. Ans is b. See the explaination of 7.

9. Ans is 5. This was a 15 sec question. Logic is 1001 ^ 1001 divided by 9, whatever is the remainder is the answer. Why - because thats the concept. To know more of the concept I need a face to face class cant explain by writing.

10. a= 2, b= 1, c = 9, d = 7 and e = 8. This involves more of logic and less of NUMBERS. All u guys do a little brain storm. Its difficult for me to explain this by writing. By the way this was an old CAT actual question. and there were 5 ques. I solved this in 3 minutes 15 sec. which I think is worth 5 ques.

Here comes a ques based on the last set of questions. Lets see how fast I get a reply.

Q1. 3p5q7 = x + y. x and y are natural numbers and x < y. Both x and y are prime. What is x?

Q2. Give one rational number between 1.9999……. and 2.0.

Gitanjali (Nobel Prize fetcher) by Rabindranath Tagore

Now-a-days I am reading Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore. This is the book which brought the Nobel prize to Tagore. This is the real piece of literature. Seriously, I had never read anything like this, not in the philosophical terms but in terms of language used. For me this is really phodu. A must read for MBA aspirants because until and unless we will read the phodu (;)) content online, we won’t feel that CAT passages are not so difficult. And we need that aptitude to crack the CAT passages. So make sure that you are reading some phodu content also, apart from the normal Hindu, TOI, Frontline, BT, BW etc. Also now start focusing on readin the material on computer. I will keep bringing some good stuff to read online.BTW, this work is under public domain, so you can also distribute it among your friends without worrying about the copyright issue.

CAT 2009 will be computer based test

So it’s been finally officially declared that the CAT 2009 will be a computer based test. Right now it’s not very clear that whether it will be computer adaptive test (CAT) like GMAT in which next question will depend on your marking of the previous question i.e if you mark the previous question right then a more difficult question will come else the less difficult one or not. Also in CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) the marks to each question varies according to its difficulty.

“The CAT will be conducted at Prometric centers across the country. The locations of these centers will be determined only after all applications have been received. Students will get some idea about how to prepare for this year’s test when the CAT advertisements and booklets are released,” said IIM Bangalore (IIM-B) Professor Amarnath Krishnaswamy.

Quantitative Area: Some useful facts to Remember

Hi everyone,
Yesterday I have posted the article on last two digits concept. I am still awaiting your invaluable comments & suggestions for that post. Now as i have been to classroom teaching for a good period of time I have faced maximum students complaining that they can’t remember or say summarise the important facts behind any topic in quantitative area. Whether its an approach or problem solving, You always require a good back up of those important facts. Here I have tried to put some of those useful points which must be considered as your back up tool while you approach any relevant problem.

You can have a look one by one.

1. If an equation (i.e. f(x) = 0) contains all positive co-efficients of any powers of x, it has no positive roots.
Eg: x^3+3x^2+2x+6=0 has no positive roots

2. For an equation, if all the even powers of x have same sign coefficients and all the odd powers of x have the opposite sign coefficients, then it has no negative roots.

3. For an equation f(x)=0 , the maximum number of positive roots it can have is the number of sign changes in f(x) ; and the maximum number of negative roots it can have is the number of sign changes in f(-x)

4. Complex roots occur in pairs, hence if one of the roots of an equation is 2+3i, another has to be 2-3i and if there are three possible roots of the equation, we can conclude that the last root is real. This real root could be found out by finding the sum of the roots of the equation and subtracting (2+3i)+(2-3i)=4 from that sum.

5.
For a cubic equation ax^3+bx^2+cx+d=o
• Sum of the roots = - b/a
• Sum of the product of the roots taken two at a time = c/a
• Product of the roots = -d/a

For a bi-quadratic equation ax^4+bx^3+cx^2+dx+e = 0
• Sum of the roots = - b/a
• Sum of the product of the roots taken three at a time = c/a
• Sum of the product of the roots taken two at a time = -d/a
• Product of the roots = e/a

6. If an equation f(x)= 0 has only odd powers of x and all these have the same sign coefficients or if f(x) = 0 has only odd powers of x and all these have the same sign coefficients, then the equation has no real roots in each case (except for x=0 in the second case)

7. Consider the two equations

a1x+b1y=c1
a2x+b2y=c2

Then,
If a1/a2 = b1/b2 = c1/c2, then we have infinite solutions for these equations.
If a1/a2 = b1/b2 c1/c2, then we have no solution.
If a1/a2 b1/b2, then we have a unique solution.

8. Roots of x^2 + x + 1=0 are 1, w, w^2 where 1 + w + w^2=0 and w^3=1

9. |a| + |b| = |a + b| if a*b>=0
else, |a| + |b| >= |a + b|

10. The equation ax2+bx+c=0 will have max. value when a0. The max. or min. value is given by (4ac-b^2)/4a and will occur at x = -b/2a

11.
If for two numbers x + y=k (a constant), then their PRODUCT is MAXIMUM if x=y (=k/2). The maximum product is then (k2)/4.

If for two numbers x*y=k (a constant), then their SUM is MINIMUM if
x=y (=root(k)). The minimum sum is then 2*root (k).

12. Product of any two numbers = Product of their HCF and LCM. Hence product of two numbers = LCM of the numbers if they are prime to each other.

13. For any 2 numbers a, b where a>b

Eg) Find the sum of all 3-digit nos. formed using the digits 2, 3, 5, 7 & 8.
Sum = (2+3+5+7+8) * (5-1)! * 11111 (since 5 digits are there)
= 25 * 24 * 11111
=6666600

36. Consider the equation x^n + y^n = z^n

As per Fermat’s Last Theorem, the above equation will not have any solution whenever n>=3.

37. Further as per Fermat, where ‘p’ is a prime no. and ‘N’ is co-prime to p, then,

The traditional formula for computing CI is

Using Pascal’s Triangle,

Eg: P = 1000, R=10 %, and N=3 years. What is CI & Amount?

Step 1:
Amount after 3 years = 1 * 1000 + 3 * 100 + 3 * 10 + 1 * 1 = Rs.1331

The coefficients - 1,3,3,1 are lifted from the Pascal’s triangle above.

Step 2:
CI after 3 years = 3*100 + 3*10 + 3*1 = Rs.331 (leaving out first term in step 1)

If N =2, we would have had,
Amt = 1 * 1000 + 2 * 100 + 1 * 10 = Rs.1210
CI = 2 * 100 + 1* 10 = Rs.210

43. Suppose the price of a product is first increased by X% and then decreased by Y% , then, the final change % in the price is given by:
Final Difference% = X - Y - XY/100

Eg) The price of a T.V set is increased by 40 % of the cost price and then is decreased by 25% of the new price. On selling, the profit made by the dealer was Rs.1000. At what price was the T.V sold?

Applying the formula,
Final difference% = 40 – 25 - (40*25/100) = 5 %.

So if 5 % = 1,000
Then, 100 % = 20,000.
Hence, C.P = 20,000
& S.P = 20,000+ 1000= 21,000

44. Where the cost price of 2 articles is same and the mark up % is same, then, marked price and NOT cost price should be assumed as 100.

Where ‘P’ represents principal and ‘R’ represents the rate of interest, then, the difference between 2 years’ simple interest and compound interest is given by P * (R/100)^2

The difference between 3 years’ simple interest and compound interest is given by (P * R^2 *(300+R))/100^3

Hence, P (A>B>C) = 1/3!
= 1/6

Eg)2. Consider the word ‘METHODS’. What is the probability that the letter ‘M’ comes before ‘S’ when all the letters of the given word are used for forming words, with or without meaning?

P (M>S) = 1/2!
= 1/2

50. CALENDAR

Calendar repeats after every 400 years.

Leap year- it is always divisible by 4, but century years are not leap years unless they are divisible by 400.

Century has 5 odd days and leap century has 6 odd days.

In a normal year 1st January and 2nd July and 1st October fall on the same day. In a leap year 1st January 1st July and 30th September fall on the same day.

January 1, 1901 was a Tuesday.

Concept of Last Two Digits

Hello All,
First of all let me appreciate the opportunity of being a part of this team. This is my first article to this project.
Before I start the concept of last two digits lets have a quick look at the concept behind unit’s digit. I know most of you might be aware of this concept called cyclicity. All you need to do, is just catch the last digit of the base and apply the rule of cyclicity. You can follow the cyclicity table give below for your convenience.

e.g Last digit or unit digit of 127^127.(Please note that this expression is to be read as 127 to the power 127. Also all other similar expressions are also to be followed in the same pattern.)
Just pick up last digit of the base i.e 7 and divide the given power by 4 & check out the remainder.
The remainder when 127 is divided by 4 is 3. Hence the power of the given expansion is of the type 4K+3. Therefore the unit’s digit will be 3.
How simple is that.
Now lets move on to the concept of last two digits. The fundamental behind the last two gits is just like unit’s digit concept.
Here you just need to catch the last two digits.
e.g Find the last two digits of the product of 1023 X 2027 X 5096 X 5979.
Just pick up the last two digits of all the numbers.
i.e 23, 27, 96 & 79
Multiply any pair using crisscross method of multiplication and note down the last two digits only.
i.e 23 X 27 gives you 21 as last two digits similarly 96 x 79 gives you 84 as last two digits.
Now again multiply the obtained results to get the answer.
i.e 21 x 84 which gives you 64 as last two digits.
Hope you find it doable comfortably.
Now lets move on to the cyclicity concept of last two digits.
1. If you have 1 as your unit’s digit in any base then whatever be the ten’s place, you just need to write 1 as your unit’s place as simple as that & just multiply the unit digit of index/power to the ten’s place of the base and note down the unit digit of multiplication as your ten’s digit of expansion.
e.g Last two digits of 21^144.
You have 1 as unit’s place and 2 as ten’s place in your base in the given example.
You know that unit digit of this expansion has to be 1 always.
Now for ten’s digit of this expansion you pick up the unit digit of the power 144, which is 4 & multiply it to the ten’s digit of the base which is 2.
i.e 4 X 2 which will be 8 & this will be the ten’s place of the expansion.
Hence last two digits come out to be 81.
Similarly 3, 7 & 9 can be converted to such an extent so that you can get unit digit 1 and after that you can easily do the process of 1 as unit’s place.
One more very interesting and very important result is the cyclicity of 24 as last two digits of the base.
Please follow if 24^even power it will always end by 76 as last two digits
& if 24^odd power, it will always end by 24 as last two digits.
Also 2, 4 & 6 can be broken into factors to get the last two digits.
e.g Last two digits of 196^224.
The base 196 can be converted to small factors like 196 = 4 X 49
Now the problem becomes simple 4^224 x 49^224

Or (4^5)^44 X 4^4 X 2401^112

which gives you 76, 56 & 01 as last two digits respectively.
Multiply step by step as the process discussed earlier and get the last two digits.
The answer will be 56 for this example.
Concept of compliment of the base
e.g Last two digits of 39^44 .
Compliment of the base will be 61, hence lets take out last two digits of (-61)^44 which results to -41 as last two digits. But this has to be positive and to make it positive just add the complimentary base i.e 100 to the last result -41. Hence the answer comes out to be 59.
And lastly when 5 is your unit’s place in the base. It can be of two forms.
Either ten’s place is odd or ten’s place is even.
i.e either of the type 15, 35, 55, 75, 95, (Lets say Case-1)
or of the type 25, 45, 65, 85. (Lets say Case-2)
Case-1 last two digits will be 75 for any odd power .
And for any even power last two digits will be 25.
Case-2 Last two digits will be 25 for any power .
Now you can have any example of the types discussed in this article and easily take out the last two digits of the same.

Hello All.
First of all thanks to all of you for such a great response on article 3. And second, I am sorry for being so late for the 4th article.

Before we talk of number system, lets discuss the question which I asked in comment #10 on article 3.

The answer is 10%. Let’s see how to get the answer. After explaining how to get the answer, I will give you the logic. 100-85 = 15, 100-80 = 20, 100-75 = 25, 100-70 = 30. Now 15 + 20 + 25 + 30 = 90. This 90 when subtracted from 100 is 10 which is the answer.
Logic: ————–|————————|———————————|————————————–|————–
Say this line above represents 100% of the girls. The Red ones(upto first ‘|” mark) are the ones who are not fair and therefore the balance i.e. the black ones are fair. Similarly the blue ones(from first ‘|’ mark and upto 2nd ‘|” mark) on the line do not have blue eyes. Therefore the rest i.e. red ones and black ones do have blue eyes. And similarly the yellow ones(from 2nd ‘|’ mark and upto 3rd ‘|” mark) are not tall and therefore the rest i.e. red, blue and black are tall. And similarly the green ones(from 3rd ‘|’ mark and upto 4th ‘|” mark) are not rich and therefore the rest i.e. red, blue and yellow and black, are. See carefully now, these are the black ones who have all the four characteristics. And this will be 10%.

I do not have a solution better than this. Here note that I have kept the ‘Don’t have’ disjoint to arrive at ‘have ‘at least’’. The method is useful only in this type of question. And note that this ques(with diff data) has been asked many times in last 12 CATs and many other exams. Ques: Is this Maths? No. But its common sense.

Number system comprises of rational and irrational numbers, positive and negative numbers, even and odd numbers, prime and composite numbers. It also has Natural numbers, whole numbers, Integers, Perfect numbers, co-prime numbers etc. I am assuming that all of you know all this. If not, then please read any book. Please note you will, almost always find a ques on these in CAT.

So here come a few questions for you. Real CAT type questions.

Q1: 3ab59 = x + y. x and y are natural numbers and x < y. Both x and y are prime. What is x?

Q2: 2^10 = 1024. 1024 = p + q. p and q both are integers. p < q. Both p and q are not even. Both p and q are not odd. None of the two is negative. What is p? What is q?

Q3: How many rational numbers exists between two rational numbers?

Q4: Give one rational number between 1.3333……. and 1.4444…….(Both are recurring decimal numbers).

Q5: How many perfect numbers are there which are greater than 100?

Divisibility rules: If you want to understand divisibility rules of a number, I suggest instead of mugging the things, look into the multiples of a number. You will be able to see a trend/pattern almost always. If you don’t, then keep looking for the pattern, you will for sure find a pattern, almost always. Caution: Not all the numbers have divisibility rules. But these are only few. So few that u could be effected practically. I will talk more about divisibility rules with passage of time and with your feedback.

Q6: If a^b+b^a=100, where a and b are natural numbers, find the number of pairs of (a,b) such that the product a.b is maximum.(Ques by Courtesy of Mr.Rajneesh Tripathi)

Q7. Is X = 42.317317317…….(recurring), a rational number or irrational? If it’s rational, what is it’s p/q form. (Ques by Courtesy of Mr.Rajneesh Tripathi)(I suggest in this ques note the time in which u solved this question).

Q8. X = 0.ababab………(recurring). X is multiplied by Y and the result is an integer. What can Y be?
98 b) 198 c)298 d)398 e) None of these

Q9: 1001 ^ 1001 is expanded and sum of the digits is taken. Now sum of the digits of ‘sum of the digits from previous calculation’ is taken. And so on till we get a single digit. What will be this digit?

Q10. abcde x 4 = edcba. What are a, b, c, d and e respectively. a, b, c, d and e are all distinct.

Only this much for now. I am sure all of you will be able to post the answers within 24 hours. I think that should be enough time for you for you are preparing for a 2.5 hour exam having about 75 questions.

Many a times I have seen that people especially the students who want to know the meaning of a word go to the new page and type dictionary.com/thefreedictionary.com to look up the meaning of a word. Don’t you think that leaving the page distracts your concentration? If yes then I have come up with a video tutorial which will help you in installing a plugin on your firefox browser, after which you don’t have to go to any other page or site to look for the meaning of a word. You just need to select the word and press “V”, and a new small window will appear to the right side of the browser which will give you the meaning of the word. You don’t need to worry about the source as this scripts brings the meaning from wikitionary/dictionary.com/thefreeditctionary.com. You just have to change the settings and that’s it.

So I’ll not bore you anymore by writing the tutorial in the post. You should watch the video which will better convey the message and consumes less time of yours. I hope you will find this plugin helpful in your daily surfing of internet. I will bring more such updates in future. BTW, here is the video (5 minutes)

How are you?

First of all I thank you all, for a great response to the last article. And special thanks to Bhuvanesh, Garima and Vipul for contributing towards helping MBA aspirants and my articles. And very special thanks to Mr.Ajay for morale boosting of all of us and his best wishes.

I am not happy, at all, from all the guys who have read the article, for I have asked in the last few lines of the article #2, to let me know how you feel after following the schedule for at least 5-7 days. NONE has so far posted any feedback on that. Shall I assume that all you guys are only interested in reading what to do and how to do and not at all interested in actually doing it. If that is true than guys all my efforts will become just the GYAN, JUST THE GYAN, and I will not be interested in writing any more in that case. Guys, as I mentioned in my post #1 that it is you, who extracts everything out of me, and not me who gives you anything/everything, you will have to start extracting before it’s too late. See, as a manager also, u have to utilize the resources which are available. Resources won’t come to you always, and tell u this is how u can utilize us (resources). Isn’t that true? If yes, then I suggest that you all start acting like managers and not as CLERKS.

Anyways, as I mentioned in the last article, I am devoting this article to Maths section of CAT.

My first question to you all is: are managers supposed to be good at Maths? Personally, I doubt. Look into the roles of Finance, Marketing, HR, IT/Systems, and Production etc managers. What has an HR manager to do of Maths except calculating salary increases? What has a marketing manager to do with Maths except analyzing the data to find out what kind of growth opportunity exists in the market? What has a Finance manager to do with Maths except thinking of ROR, ROI, WACC, and P & L.? If those are the only things required for various managers, why the hell you should study No. System, Time-work, Time-Distance, Perm-Comb, Prob, ratios, Geometry etc etc. What has geometry to do with any function of Management?

Let’s understand 1 thing simple. IIT-JEE asks for P, C, M, why, because these are the subjects which have to do something with every branch of engineering and U will study these subjects in the 1st year as well. CPMT asks P, C, Biology (Botany, Zoology), why, because these are the subject which have to do something with every branch of medicine and U will study these subjects in the 1st year of MBBS, as well. And same is true for all the entrance exams; you talk of CA foundation, Bank PO, Bank Clerical or whatever. Basically, whatever is going to be of some use to you in your future jobs is what is asked in the entrance exams. Right??

So, now the question is what’s going to be of some use as a manager to you? Is it going to be English? I am sure all of you will say, YES, for the simple reason that today business is not restricted to a particular geography or region, it’s rather cross borders and so a common language is required. Fair enough explanation of English being a part of Managerial aptitude. What else is required to be a good manager? THINK. THINK. My answer to that is COMMON SENSE, which is what is the most un-common thing these days. ‘Thanda matlab coca cola’ a simple theme developed by Coke to market their product in India. Do they use it in any other country? No. They understood one simple thing that Indians still calls a cold drink, THANDA. And they exploited this word. Isn’t it common sense? For that matter Pepsi could have been the first to think of it. Where will I invest the 500 crore profit I had in last year? Will I buy stocks, Will I put up a new plant, will I issue dividends, will I let them be idle in banks, will I buy competition (M&A) etc etc. Answer to this is, where ever I think is higher ROR for me, I will put my money there. No doubt, later I can turn out to be wrong sometimes. But then that was my perception/calculation of returns in what I invested my money. Isn’t it common sense? All the financial tools are secondary unless and until we have this basic understanding. Once we have this basic level of understanding then things like Black-Sholes model, Product Life cycle, what motivates People except money will come into picture?

So let’s go back. Should CAT be asking Maths? Answer is a plain NO. And dear friends, I after writing 13 consecutive CATs am telling you a fact that CAT DOES NOT ASKS MATHS at all. WHAT IT ASKS IS PLAIN COMMON SENSE.

Here are some examples.

Q: In rectangle ABCD, Point E and F trisects the base DC. What is ratio of Area (tri AEF) to that of rectangle? CAT 2001(if I can recall well)

Ans: How most of you will do it is: Area AEF/ Area ABCD = ½ x EF x AD / AD x DC = ½ x DC/3 x AD / AD x DC = 1/6, which is the right answer.

Now as per me that’s not Manager-Sense or common sense. How I will approach is: Diagonal AC divides rectangle into 2 equal halves. DE=EF=FC, the 3 triangles ADE, AEF and AFC have to be equal. Therefore, Triangle AEF is 1/3rd of Triangle ADC, which is half of the rectangle. So 1/3rd of half = 1/6th.

See, I have taken more words to explain, but when I am doing it in exam, I will just draw 2 lines, AE and AF and immediately mark the answer. 3 seconds job. What do u say? MANAGER’s job is to visualize. Isn’t it?

Q: In rectangle ABCD, Point E divides DC in the ratio 1:3. If area of triangle ADE is 7 sq cm, find the area of rectangle? CAT2000 (if I can recall well).
a) 28 sq cm b) 42 sq cm c) 56 sq cm d) None

Ans: How most of you will approach is: Area ADE = 7. So ½ x AD x DE = 7. So AD x DE = 14. So AD x DC/3 = 14. So AD x DC = 42. And that’s wrong.

Those of you who are cautious will not write DE = DC/3, which DE is not, rather DE = DC/4. Using that you will get the right answer which is 56 sq cm.

Anyways, this above is a Maths teacher’s approach, and not mine. My approach will be: Triangle ADE is 1/4th of Triangle ADC. So Triangle ADC = 28 and so Rectangle = 56 sq cm. And I will take 4 seconds to do it in exam.

Guys, this is how you will do, after doing the 1st question. In CAT, how actually I did was: A line drawn from E parallel to AD, say touches AB at M. Now Triangle AEM is also 7, so rectangle ADEM is 14, Which stands on 1 unit base(DE), so on 3 unit base(EC) area will be 42, so total area is 56 sq cm. Howz that??

Now, I can keep solving questions here in the same fashion. I can solve almost all the questions of every CAT in the same fashion. Guys, you may believe it or not, I take 15 odd minutes to exhaust the Maths section, typically doing things as explained above.

Now, the more important point. How am I able to do things this way? There are things which by chance, I have been doing since early childhood. I hope all of you remember some problems like A & B went to a book shop, each purchased a book worth Rs 25…………………..Where has 1 Rs.gone? Hope you are able to recollect the old problem. Typically, we after a small effort use to leave that after trying for a while. My problem was, I use to try such problems till I use to find the answer. So what’s the lesson for you? Managers are supposed to keep trying till they have the solution? Right? No, not exactly, that’s how u develops eyesight for what is missing. Once developed, that eye sight pays in long run.

Second, I solved Shakuntala Devi book, when I think, I was in 8th standard. And not like most of my students. I didn’t use to refer to solutions ever, except for the answers. Unless I had tried a question 7-10 times, I didn’t use to refer to solution. Matter of chance, I was able to solve almost 95% of the questions in those many attempts. Typically what happens with my students is, after 1 try or maximum 2, they will rush to see the answers and here u have KILLED an opportunity for ur brain to develop. What can any teacher do now?

Third, even till date, when I am not able to solve a question, I will keep thinking of it, especially while I am driving. And will you believe that formulas like ‘Product of all factors of N=a^m x b^n x c^p………..’ I have derived while driving. Hey guys, I am not suggesting that you think while driving, but then what about the time you spend in Metro or Bus, what about the time when you are waiting for ur turn a doctor’s clinic, what about the time you are waiting for a bus etc.

Fourth, I use to share the best tricks I have made with my friends. We use to debate and ended up many times in fighting and spoiling our moods. But then end of the day, we ended up making lot of shortcuts. I remember many till date, how a particular short cut was derived by us, who ended throwing full cup of tea over whom while discussing (arguing actually)? This on 1 hand helped us gaining knowledge through sharing, on other hand the tricks were memorized because of the incident.

Fifth, I use to carry a diary, full of formulae I have read in a particular class, till that date. And I use to take it out of my pocket whenever I was in bus or at doctor’s place etc.(I missed my turn at doc’s place many times, hope you won’t). This habit made me derive many formulae on my own, of which I have never ever read the proofs or derivation. Imagine if u have derived a formula yourself, can u ever forget it and the concept behind it.

Sixth, since class 9th, I have habit of writing every single penny I have spent. What I use to do was, in morning while getting out of home, I use to count the money I am carrying. And when I was back home, I use to count it again. The difference, u know, is what I have spent. I use to think where have I spent, and I use to think till I can figure out every Rs.1 spent. This made my BODMAS solid, and I bet even today you can’t beat me in calculation, calculator allowed for you, not for me. Understand this guys, CAT won’t make you multiply 3456672 with 21344289. But then u will come across 34 x 47 type of simple calculation quite often. If you know that the answer is a little more then 1200, about 1600, that usually serves the purpose. Difficult na. No, not really, see 30 x 40 is 1200. So answer is more then 1200. Further 4 and 40 is 160 and 30 x 7 is 210. So the answer is 1200+160+210=1570. I hope that suffice to all. To those it does not, they can add 4 x 7 = 28 to 1570 to get 1598. Guys, you may not believe, when I was typing, I asked my friend who was sitting on the next table, to give me 2, two digit numbers. He gave me 34 and 47 and I immediately replied that their product is 1598. He said I am kidding and he checked and was amazed to see that it is correct. So the lesson is, when you like numbers you can be fast @ speed of light. Ok ok, speed of sound. Is that enough for CAT? I believe yes.

Lastly, I can keep giving you such tips to no end. As of now I am stopping for Ansh will say, sir no more space on mbatutes for your future articles. Lolzz… Anyways, don’t start following these tips. And say it’s too much. And be where you are. We all, including me, avoid working by saying it’s too much, just that if we start somewhere, slowly and slowly, with time, we end up doing so much that in the end we wonder if it were we only who has done so much. I, in my research (which is going on) these days, counted the pages which I have studied (of various case studies) in past 10 months and was amazed to find out that I have studied more than 12000 pages. I am wondering that it cannot be me who has read all these cases. But then I can’t deny my hand writing on all these papers.

So I thought why not I give them what they need so that they don’t have to see the older version i.e India year book 2008. A very unique way to celebrate 150th birthday (10 April, 2011) of MIT (Yes the original Messachusetts Institute of Technology). MIT Museum has started a new site where they are calling the students, alumni, faculty member or any other person related to MIT to nominate some very unique person, place, thing or idea. After this nominations they will select the top 150 unique identities of MIT and showcase them in the MIT museum.

Though 150th birthday is after two years, they have started collecting the items now. Till now there has been 123 nominations. Here is the screenshot of the nominations. To go to the site, please click the image or this link: MIT Museum Nominations.

Here are some simple but enormously beneficial hints to help relax your eyes when studying or concentrating.

Light

Sunlight is the best for your eyes. When there is not enough sun-light, use comfortably bright light from electricity.

Breathing

When we concentrate, we tend to hold our breath or we stop breathing for a short period. This creates tensions in our eyes and our bodies. When you study or concentrate, make sure that your breathing is relaxed, deep, and rhythmic.

Blinking

We naturally close and open our eyes and it is called “blinking”. We tend to stop blinking when we concentrate. So make sure that you blink when you concentrate. Also occasionally, look away and blink a few times to relax your eyes.

Palming

This technique is to relax your eyes. Use your palms to cover your eyes without touching the eye lids. Make your palms round like when holding water so that you do not touch the eye lids. Your palms will touch your forehead and cheeks so that you will feel complete dark.

Hi All.

First of all, I thank you all for showing your interest by posting your comments on my 1st post.

As I mentioned in my last post that I will be writing about ‘How to prepare for MBA in long run’, here it comes.

Lets Understand 1 thing first. People(CAT experts) say that CAT is an aptitude test. My ques to that statement is, what kind of aptitude does it check. My ans when I don’t want to ans is, It checks ‘Managerial aptitude’. What I have not told here is, what is managerial aptitude? Now, my suggestion to all is, tell me what do u think is the managerial aptitude?

What is my understanding of managerial aptitude, I will post that soon. Not posting for I want all of you to brain storm about it. BRAIN STORM: thats one of the things which makes managerial aptitude. Hey guys, so if u read all my posts carefully(over a period of time), u will understand what it is, though I will write explicitly what it is.

In this post my focus is on, what to do to develop that managerial aptitude.

So, here I a few things you should do on a regular basis(daily) not till u clear CAT but even in those 2 years and years after that.

1. Start reading DELHI TIMES. Hey, I am marketing TOI for no salary. Most of the CAT teachers will say, be away from DELHI TIMES. Guys, see it from my eyes. There is SUDOKU, KAKURO, SPELLATHON, CROSS WORDS, MIND BLENDER, LOOP THE LOOP etc. in all 7 or 8 such things. I suggest start spending time on these things. Initially you may end up spending 2 to 3 hours on these, but soon, with a little practice your time will come down to 50 minutes approx. As of now, try solving these spendng as much time as you can, per day.

2. Pick up some puzzle books. There are 3 books by Shauntala Devi. They are good. Pls note here that Shakuntala devi has not written these books for CAT and other MBA entrance exams. So many puzzles there, u may not feel that they are useful for CAT. Never mind. Since you do not know what is useful for CAT and what is not, in thise books, I suggest you better concentrate on solving those puzzles. Guys, 3 books taken together, you have to solve just 5 puzzles per day. And beware. Solutions are there at the back. DO NOT, DO NOT for god sake refer to solutions till you have tried solving a puzzle at least 5 times, on 5 different days. Just match your answers.

3. Start reading some novels. U should be an avid reader. U shud have 1 novel going, always. I know some of u hate reading novels. But then a manager has to read many reports he is not interested in. So u will have to develop this habit of reading. To name a few good novels, I will say, ATLAS SHRUGGED, GONE WITH THE WIND, THIRD WAVE, FUTURE SHOCK, POWER SHIFT, MADE IN JAPAN, BUSINESS @ SPEED OF THOUGHT, GOD OF SMALL THINGS, LEE IOCOCCA-An Autobiography, CHICKEN SOUP(all editions), THE TOYOTA WAY, ZEN & ART OF MOTOR CYCLE MAINTENANCE, DAVINCI CODE, SOPHIE’S WORLD, PRIDE & PREJUDICE are some good ones to start. For those who will start reading novels for the first time, 5 POINT SOMEONE, 1 NIGHT @ CALL CENTRE, ALCHEMIST, Books by Sydney Sheldon, TO SIR WITH LOVE, WHO MOVED MY CHEESE, 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE, WHALE DONE, RICH DAD POOR DAD are some of the good ones. Typically 1 novel should be finished in 4 to 10 days, spending about 2 hours a day. For those who don’t have time to read that much, I will suggest use, ‘time of travelling’, ‘time of waiting for ur turn at doctor’s clinic’ etc., to read.

4. Read at least 1 newspaper a day. I like TOI bt for MBA prep I will suggest HINDU as 1st choice, INDIAN EXPRESS as 2nd. I suggest start with any 1.

5. Read a Financial Newspaper, daily, at least Mon to Fri. I like ET, you may start with any other as well.

6. Subscribe EPW, a weekly magazine, Economic & Political Weekly. www.epw.org. If I can recall properly, in 2004 there was a RC which was a part of one of the articles from EPW. Read THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, TIMES MAGAZINE, AND ECONOMISTS. You should read these regularly. A must for your good health.

7. Read a general magazine like Outlook, India today etc. and a business magazine Business world, business today etc. regularly.

8. Play Minesweeper. Play Chess. Play Poker, teen patti of and on.

9. Solve some puzzles on internet, average 10 puzzles a week.

10. For Grammar pick up Raymond Murphy(Beginner) and read 3 chapter a day. And read them 2-3 times till u get everything in your head. U may like to pick Wren & Martin. Ok with me. 1 Chapter a day.

11. Word power made easy - by norman louis. Read a chapter a day and follow the instructions inside. In addition, pick up any tutorials word list and start mugging up 25 words a day. Its a boring exercise. What do you say? Follow my method. Learn 25 new words of A the first day. 2nd day 25 new words of B and revise old words of A. 3rd day 25 new words of C and revise old words of A & B and so on. Revise maximum 4 old alphabets. In additon, you the tricks given here by Bhuvanesh. They are good.

12. And now the last thing, my favorite subject. Maths or Problem Solving as it is called. Don’t worry. This is the easiest subject to learn. U don’t believe me. Ohh i c…

Lets see what are people’s comment abt what i said, that its the most easiest subject to learn.

Guys, I want your feedback, not with respect to what u feel abt what I have written, but with respect to how you feel after following this schedule religiously for at least 5 to 7 days.

I have been associated with some of the universities in Delhi as Guest Faculty, Have also been associated with some CBSE affiliated schools for NTSE classes, have also been associated with a few B schools in Delhi as Guest Faculty and in last 13 years have been associated with alomost all the branded MBA coaching institutes for a decent number of years.

About my academic background, I am M.Sc in Maths + an MBA, currently doing research in management areas. In my days, off course, I had IIM calls, XLRI call, FMS & IIFT + a few more(I don’t remember now..).

O ya, something of your interest, I have appeared myself for last 13 CATs and have scored 99.99 percentile and ya, scored a perfect score in GMAT too, recently…

Why I am here? Interesting question…

Answer is plain vanilla. Been training students for CAT etc., I could not resist my temptation of helping students across India and not just in Delhi, When Ansh asked me to share my experiences, here…

He asked me to share my experiences of teaching students, the difficulties which students usually face when it comes to Maths(PS), English, DI, LR or it be GD-PI preparation..I thought it will be an easy job for me, but Ansh, being a DCEite could not see me happy, made my life difficult by asking me to share my personal experieces since I appear for CAT every year and in addition he asked me to share what goes in my students when they are preparing. What kind of ups and downs they go through, while preparing for CAT, not just that, what happens in those 2.5 hrs, which decides the fate of an individual…

I agree, I have a lot of experience but then I am kinda scared as to explaining everything just by typing, without speaking, without seeing a student….

Teaching in a class, I think is pretty easy job as there are so many students sitting to extract every thing from a teacher. So in a way, I don’t give anything to the class, rather students themselves take what they want, and it just comes out automatically…

Ansh said to this, that here also students are going to extract the same way, except that i won’t be able to see their faces and so will they.

So, here I am, with you all, for you all….

Next Post of mine I will talk about ‘How should one prepare for CAT, in long run’. By long run I mean given a 7-10 months preparation time which is what I believe is more then sufficient to crack CAT.

Gradually I will look into How a B.A. English Hons can crack CAT or XAT Maths, How a B.E./B.tech can crack CAT/XAT English…how a person scared of water can learn swimming, ohh sorry, these are not How to swim, tips, these are How to prepare for CAT tips….

I meant that only, one who is scared of Maths, how can he/she learn Maths, same for those who are scared of English…

And trust me, Cracking CAT is a game, just a game, which you can be 100% sure of winning, if you play it with the game spirit. If you take it as an exam, for which tonnes of studies are required, then sorry guys, I won’t be much of help. Let’s play the game. Remember, game is for fun. We play it for we love it. We play it to win, we sometimes play to lose as well. So, if you love it, be ready to understand the rules of the game…

The Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) today declared the results of the AIMS Test for Management Admissions (ATMA) 2009 examination which was held on February 8, 2009.

Though i didn’t get a call from MICA but still i was curious to know about the MICAT. So I saw some response of MICAT 2009 givers on Pagalguy.

Here is a response of Blue Phoenix from pagalguy:

The MICA paper was actually gud.. the only problem was with the Section A2 - this section dealt with pyschometry ofcrse but in a diff manner. Diff ; coz we had to allot marks based on priority levels of the options A,B,C,D,E,F given for a ques.

Eg., one ques - What kind of a wife would u like ? (it meant that.. )
and the options were like - A) independent, smart, blah blah,,
B) aggressive proffesionally, hardworkin.. etc..
and so on till F
so based on ur likes and wants .. u can allot marks like say (MIN-1 MAX 15)
but panga was with the time .. it was a bit time taking to decide since Total had to be 30 and no ties among diff options(in terms of points alloted)

so decisions had to be quick… say 9,8,7,3,2,1 someone slow at calc. could actually use this as a standard and allot points .
Say priority 1 - 9, 2-8, 3-7 .. and so on.. in this way it wd take less time
But we were asked to just put our points beside the option on the OMR rather than bubble///

Another prblm wd be if they ask in the PI our justification for alloting 10 to option X and 1 to option Y … I mean is the ditance between the points alloted jsutified..

The essay topic was - “Is pub culture in metros and mini metros responsible for crimes against women ?” (250 wrds)

I actually screwed up in my Story writing part- Dint get enuf tym .. compressed the last part from arnd 50 words to like 12-15 words///

We had to write a story based on a pic. (A male doctor observing while a female doc. was performin an experiment )

the QA part was easy .. may be a bit lengthy.
Word associations were tricky as usual attempted 15-16 ..

Section B dealt with General Awareness… easy pickings if smeone is well aware

The Most Important Time Management Secret That Nobody Teaches You

Raj Bapna has again come up with a nice motivational article. I read it and feel like sharing it with you guys; as I can see myself in the article, not as the target setter but as the procratinator. I won’t waste any more time of yours. Here is the article:

You work hard.

But you can be too lazy, too.

In fact, it’s in our nature to be lazy. I often tell people that, if you really want to understand how the human race behaves, you must go watch the gorilla cage at the zoo for a week. At first, you’ll just see a bunch of hairy apes doing their thing. But soon enough, you’ll begin to recognize the many traits they share with us. Such as… being as lazy as possible, as much as possible.”

Here is one tactic that actually forces employees to get things done in offices:

Deadlines

Oh, they can be hateful things, deadlines. Reminiscent of high school papers due, smog tests needed, so-and-so’s birthday coming up (when they expect something impressive from you).

And when you finally study on your own or learn new skills for which there are no deadlines from others, it can be tempting to abandon them.

Big mistake. As inherently lazy creatures, we need deadlines to be efficient.

Deadlines make your goals become reality. They form a brick wall in the misty netherworld of “tomorrow” that keeps you in line.

Deadlines should be an integral part of your study [exam success] plan.

The ONLY way to attack a problem… is to roll up your sleeves and dig in. And have a plan that includes a deadline for finishing it.

This is not a small or minor hindrance in your quest for success. I recently fielded yet another email from a rookie who claimed to desperately want to become “the best ad writer in the world.”

Okay. Fine. But his question reeked of fear - he wanted to know how much time each day he should spend reading books, about writing and advertising, and how often he should copy out great ads in longhand.

Not okay. Not fine. This boy is crippled with “can’t let the curtain come up” disease. A pretty bad case, too.

Unfortunately… he’s got a lot of company.

This kind of question never even forms in the mind of someone truly seeking ad writing expertise. You’re too busy making your goal a reality. It’s not “how long should I prepare,” but what else can I do, right now, to make this happen?”

Action, not excuses for inaction.

You want to get into it up you neck, as quickly as possible.

I am brutal about my own deadlines. I’ve never missed a deadline for a client - never - and I’ll be damned if I’ll treat myself with any less respect. Even so… and even though I know the power of deadlines… I still waffle and hesitate to make them part of my plan for any project. Because they can be painful. You have to forgo pleasures and fun things, sometimes, to meet your deadlines. You have to stay up late, and concentrate and focus and absorb and retain stuff. And it hurts. Mommy! I don’t feeeeel well. I need to stay home today.

Nope. Sick or stressed, crashed computer or stalled car, you gotta meet your deadlines. It’s good for you. (It’s true - nearly all the really successful people I know… the ones having fun achieving their success… rarely get sick.)

It’s also another of those little secret traits that set you apart from your competitors, no matter what goals you’ve set for yourself. Setting and meeting deadlines is a major form of taking responsibility for yourself. You become the “action center point” of any deal, because you’re the guy making everything happen.

And you’ll come to love your deadlines, I promise you. Because, once you stop stalling around and making excuses and start setting deadlines… an amazing amount of things will start happening in your life. And you’ll be the guy making them happen.

It happens fast, and it changes your life almost immediately. So stop whining. Embrace your next deadline. It’s your partner.”

* GD is usually not an elimination procedure. The evaluator evaluates you on skills like communication in group, leadership, assertiveness and most importantly listening. Remember you have one mouth and two years. So the communication should also be on similar pattern. A group discussion is your chance to be more vocal. The evaluator wants to hear you speak. So you do not have to sit quitely and hope that someone would give you a chance to speak up. Stand up for your opinion.

* Regarding the content- TIME told us a strategy which I found very useful for every topic -SPELT. Think about a topic from five different prespectives -Social, Political, Economic, Legal And Technological, u wud be able to generate a number of good points.

* Take time to organize your thoughts. Think of what you are going to say.

* Don’t start speaking until you have clearly understood and analyzed the subject. Seek clarification if you have any doubts regarding the subject.

* Work out various strategies to help you make an entry: initiate the discussion or agree with someone else’s point and then move onto express your views.

* Opening the discussion is not the only way of gaining attention and recognition. It is a high risk, high return strategy. The move can backfire badly if you make any goof up. I personally preferred being second or third speaker.

* Your body language says a lot about you - your gestures and mannerisms are more likely to reflect your attitude than what you say. Gestures like pointing a finger or pen, sitting cross legged, playing with pen, tapping with feet needs to be avoided. Maintaining an eye contact, smiling faces are always welcomed.

* Try to know as many as people before the GD. This helps as familiar faces may not interrupt you as you speak.

* Language skills are important only to the effect as to how you get your points across clearly and fluently.

* Be assertive not dominating; try to maintain a balanced tone in your discussion and analysis. Don’t lose your cool if anyone says anything you object to. The key is to stay objective: Don’t take the discussion personally.

* Always be polite: Try to avoid using extreme phrases like: `I strongly object’ or `I disagree’. Instead try phrases like: `I would like to share my views on;’ or `One difference between your point and mine’ or “I beg to differ with you”

* In case of a ‘Fish market situation’, first and foremost- make sure that you don’t contribute to the mayhem. If the group is too disorderly wait for the right opportunity to make your point. Also a valuable tip - If a GD/Case study is more than 15 mins duration, it would not turn into a fish market. So act accordingly. IIMA case studies do not turn into fish market. There is a lot of time and people are really hesitant to create fish market kind of situation.

* Brush up on your leadership skills; motivate the other members of the team to speak, and listen to their views. Be receptive to others’ opinions and do not be abrasive or aggressive.

* Read a lot for generating content. Go thru newspapers like Hindu, mags like Businessworld etc to get a familiarity with current topics.

* Modulate the various aspects of your voice viz. volume, pitch and tone so as to suit the nature of the point you are making. Make sure you don’t sound rude or arrogant.

Apart from the above points, the panel will also judge candidates for theiralertness and presence of mind, problem-solving abilities, ability to work as a team without alienating certain members, and creativity. An old cliched but valid adage says -’Practice makes a man perfect’….. n GD is one of the places where it is most apt.

I successfully completed cracked the SPJ global Selection process. Thank you, if you are congratulating me and also to those who will do it sometime in future ;).

It was in mumbai….amchi mumbai. It has a different air, and you can feel a vibrancy in it.

I went to SPJain mumbai at Andheri, popularly known as Bhavan’s campus, where you can see true mumbai crowd. I reached there for 10.00 am slot which I chose from various time slots available. I did all the formalities of submitting documents. Then there was announcement that there will be no GD- thank god no fishy stuff. The coordinator distributed the case studies to us, respective of our opted specialization. Mine was service marketing management and I got a case onFacebook and Myspace, why the former is more successful and how business can leverage its power.Time given 45 mins. In Next 15 mins two questions- Discuss your strength and weaknesses, what success means to you- were to be answered.

Then candidates were called for the panel interview. A lady and a gentleman were waiting for me in a small room, with a round table in it. I felt comfortable as it looks like another across the table session with client (actually this is the way one should take interviews rather than beingconcious about it). They asked me why I wanna do MBA and what I learned during my work years till now, sothat I feel MBA will help me further we talked on this topic for 2o mins. Then next question was on my hobbies, again 10 mins on that. I said cooking and socializing. They asked what I learn m these activities and how they help me. I defended the question pretty well. Lastly, they asked me if I have any question. I used the opportunity to ask them about the Canada option they are offering during the course period. After few rounds of sentences from both the side we ended the interview.

Then came the next call (only to the few successful candidates) to have an PI with institute director. Huge room and a person was seating across the long table. He offered me seat, I graciously accepted it. Again the question was why MBA but in different bottle. Why you wanna do specialization in service marketing. Again I was in the mode of convincing another client. I said what was true to me(everyone has to figure out his/her answer), 15 mins grilling on this. And that’s it.

The logic was to check clarity of your thought, how much conviction you have. I knew I have given them what they were looking for.

The idea is to stay cool and have conviction in your answers showing them what they are looking for. Keep it Simple.

By the time I reached Delhi, the admission call was in my mailbox. In this time of sinking market, I don’t know whether I will join, but the experience is worth sharing with you people.

And don’t you dare miss Vada paw, if you are in mumbai or any near buy place. It’s the best thing ever happened in mumbai. The fuel to mumbaians.Similar Posts:

SNAP Scores has been changed

So all SNAP givers who are not satisfied with his score should recheck his/her score as SNAP has revised its score. Here is the official declaration.

In response to the receipt of complaints at Symbiosis Test Secretariat from some applicants with regard to some of the answers to the SNAP 2008 questions, Symbiosis International University (SIU) had undertaken a scrutiny of this matter and a few disparities were noticed.

Based on the recommendations of the scrutiny committee, the Symbiosis Test Secretariat has been directed by the SIU to release a supplementary marks-list, based on the revised answers, after which the institutes shall take the following steps.

1. To honour the existing shortlisted applicants for GD-PI and complete the process of their selection as per the announced schedule.

2. As per the revised marks-list, the candidates who have obtained higher scores than the current declared cut-offs by various institutes, shall be invited for GD-PI in a subsequent final selection process.

3. Those institutes which have not yet declared their GD / PI shortlist will abide by the revised list declared by SIU.

SIU will declare the final admission list of selected students, only after all the rounds of the GD-PI are completed.

Thus, Symbiosis International University will ensure justice to the deserving candidates.

SIOM has come out with its shortlist of students for GD/PI . GD/PI will be a in 3 stages:

A. You will appear for a short written test and thereafter the GD.

B. If you are short listed through the GD, you will appear for the Personal interview (PI).

C. If your are short listed through the PI you will appear for Director’s Personal Interview

If you are shorttlisted you will get a mail from SIOM. You have to go to SIOM, Nashik to appear for GD/PI.

Day:5th Feb 2009

Time: 8:00 a.m

I reached SCIT at sharp 8:00. I didn’t have my breakfast and they immediately asked me to go to Assembly Hall. I went there and saw near about 70-80 students with no face expressions. On the dais were standing some SCIT students. Everyone(SCIT Students of-course) was in uniform, one of them directed me towards my seat- 6th batch, 2nd seat.

After having my seat, I first analyzed the interiors of the assembly hall and then have a closer look at the dresses of invigilators (SCIT first year students). Boys were shabbily dressed, un-shaved, and wearing casual shoes with formal dress which gave a bad impression of SCIT on me. BTW,

Round 1:At 8:30 they started the first round of Psychometric Test. It contained 40 questions with 10 mins to answer them. Question paper was subjective with questions like

If some one argues with you. You will?
If you don’t like someone. You will?

Few questions were repeated after 2-3 questions to check whether your mind gives different response to the same question? There could be other reasons too; I don’t know how to judge the psycho of a person.

Round 2: GD for my batch 6. We were a group of 8 people. The topic we got was

“IPL promotes business not Cricket”

we had 15 min to discuss; everybody gets the chance to speak. Judges also intervened so that those who did not want to give chance to others can be stopped. Overall, no one took any stand and the conclusion of the discussion was that IPL promotes both business and cricket .

Round 3: Another GD session after 5 min. The topic of this new GD with new judges was:

“1+1=11″

Everyone talks about the team work but there were some good points like two legs look like 11, its only the mind which wants to show they are different; remaining ones I don’t remember. But there can be lot many.

Round 4: Then came the HR interview round in which an old man exchanged a hand shake with me and told me to take the seat. Then he asked me about myself, my biggest achievement, my biggest failure, my best experience, my worst experience, my biggest failure in decision making etc. It went for about 15 min.

Round 5: last and the final round of technical interview in which a single person interviewed me and he didn’t ask any technical question. He just asked my qualifications, then he asked me about Sub-prime crisis. After this he asked me to select one of the chits on the desk which contained case studies. He asked me to read it and suggest the possible solution for it. In the mean while he was seeing my certificates. In brief, my case study was that a competitor of Mc-Donald wants to become big. For that he has one solution of overtaking a doughnut making company, I am the consultant at Mc-kinsey and I have to suggest whether he (Mc-donalds competitor) should buy the doughnut company or not. I suggested that it depends on his priorities i.e if he only wants to expand then it could be a good option else he should concentrate on his brand building to become a major player in burger. I also gave some more funde of marketing costs, and then he asked why MBA after becoming an entrepreneur? I gave my reasons which are very true and original; after which he said thank you to me

After that I quit and come to lucknow, enjoying myself and waiting for the result in Feb end.

Hi,

This is for the first time I am posting from a cyber cafe. I am in Pune for GD/PI call from SCIT. Yes, I am desperate to tell you guys. At last one call and am through with GD/PI round.

BTW, I was expecting the call from SIOM but the result of SIOM is been postponed till 10th Feb. I don’t know the reason.

Did CL change its Logo?

Today while surfing I came across an analysis of MFC 2009 Paper by CL and in that file I find a different logo of Career Launcher (CL).

Currently Official Logo:

Probable New Logo:

Though they haven’t changed their logo on their site but when they are using this new logo on the pdf file created by them, then they must be having some plans with it:

1) May be this new logo is only for Analysis of MBA exams.

2) Or may be this one is the logo of the new joint venture between Veritas Elite and Career Launcher.

Good Vs Well

General Rule:

The general rule with good and well is that well is an adverb and good is an adjective. What this means is that well modifies verbs, adjectives and other adverbs and good modifies nouns.

Unfortunately, there are exceptions to this rule just to keep us on our toes. “Well” may be used when describing if something is proper, healthy or suitable. As in, “I am well (healthy) today.”

Examples

That is a good song. (Good is modifying the noun, song.)

You sang the song very well. (Well is modifying the verb, sang.)

The bike is pedaling well. (Well is modifying the verb, pedaling.

The car is in good shape. (Good is modifying the noun, car.)

Exception

One exception is with the use of verbs of sensation like touch, feel, looks, hears, and smells. It would be proper to say, “The cake smells good.” To say that the cake smells well would imply that the cake has a nose that can smell appropriately. So, to add more confusion, it is also correct to say, “I feel good today.” Good refers to how you are physically and spiritually feeling.

How are you feeling?

I feel good. (Think of James Brown’s “I Feel Good”.)

How are you?

I am well, thank you.
