The wait is over -- comic and prose writer Chuck Dixon has stopped by the show for an amazing interview! For those that don't know Dixon is a prolific comic writer who has made impressive contributions to comics such as the Batman franchise, Conan the Barbarian, and of course, the Punisher (and so much more).

Dixon talked to us about earnestness in writing, how to make sure a soldier is holding the right gun, why Sylvester Stallone is a cooler guy than you know, and why Frank doesn't give a damn about dinosaurs. Introduction - I'm taken a bit aback when Jake explains what an EDC bag is and why he has one, but it's far better than my story, where I talk about how I'm not invited to the grand opening of my new workplace. News - The Punisher has been announced as a playable character for the Lego Marvel Heroes video game coming out this October. We also talk about the Prime Cuts video that we released two weeks ago.

Mail Call - Does Frank still believe in God, and how does he stay in shape? We answer these pertinent questions today.

Bullet Points - We cover Ulimates #27 and Thunderbolts # 13. They aren't Frank Castle stories per se, but hey, they each have him in for one panel, so that's... acceptable. Hopefully the next batch will be better, guys.

Flashbacks - We discuss Punisher War Journal #35 "Motivation"! This one has an Arnold homage character in it, so it was an easy choice.

Dane and Jake Go to The Movies - We watched Raw Deal, a movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger plays an undercover FBI agent who must leave his old life behind to infiltrate the Chicago mob. A subtle, evocative performance reminiscent of Pacino or Daniel Day Lewis. Jake and I do our best to recount the beautiful genius of this movie, but I fear it was too much like staring at an angel, and now we are both blind and stupid forever.

Discharge Papers - I discuss the new Shadowrun Returns game, and Jake comes back at me with him trying out the Savage Worlds tabletop game. We then get into a spiel about the Highlander franchise.

Introduction - Jake talks about a dream date he never asked for, and I bring up overdue books and gettin' lucky.

News - There's a bunch of new Punisher fan films new and upcoming, and we want you all to check 'em out!

• First on the list is the fan-animated Do Not Fall in New York City film by Luis Junquera.  I really enjoyed the style and "flow" of this one. The film has blown up on a lot of comic book news sites, and here is his response.
• Indy filmmaker Chris Notarile has created four Punisher fan films, Punisher '79-'82. Here is a Youtube playlist that has all of them, but Punisher '80 was taken down by Youtube.  You can find that film (and the rest) on his superhero page.
• Actor/director Chris Warner has successfully Kickstarted a studio-quality Punisher short!  We'll keep you updated as the film continues production.

Mail Call - Jesse Mack asks us what Punisher story arc we'd like to see adapted to a new Marvel movie. Jacob gives us a trilogy of MAX titles, and while I like the idea,

Dane and Jake Go to the Movies - It took 34 episodes, but we're finally doing it.  We're bum-rushing the three Punisher movies that everyone clamored for but never quite got it right.  And yet, they each have their charms.

Discharge Papers - Jake discusses his finishing of the Loeb's Long Halloween run, and his replay of Final Fantasy 8.  I recommend the book Mastery from Robert Greene, so you can go from chump to champ at whatever you do in life.  I also recommend the game Bastion, which is like Diablo if your character was in a colorful, utterly destroyed society.

Flashbacks - In honor of our 30th episode, Jake and I read What If? #58, which explores what would happen if Frank managed to kill Spider-Man in his first introduction to comics. Clearly, Frank has a good ending in this comic.

Discharge Papers - I recommend the book American Tabloid by James Elroy for those that like noirish historical fiction set in Red Scare America. Jake classes things up with him and his wife watching the Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde play and talks about why the Akira movie can't match up to the manga. I also recommend the horror film anthology V/H/S, which is available On Demand and iTunes.

Introduction - I discuss my sudden turn to a straight-edge experimenting and Jake talks about his magical barber experience.  

News - We discuss the Thunderbolts news and Greg Rucka's interview with Clint magazine.

Flashbacks - We wrap up Welcome Back Frank with our thoughts on the Russian and  which jokes we thought were the best.  As we've said before it's a great "starter" book to people interested in the character.  Next episode, we'll dive back into more classic Punisher.

Discharge Papers - Jake and I discuss the Spider-Man and Batman movies, and I blow the lid off on the non-controversy of the Punisher's connection to the Executioner pulp novels.  Finally, Jake and I talk up Blacksad, the noir comic that has talking animals in it and still manages to be awesome.

Bullet Points - Ennis serves us a war best served cold in Fury: Cold Warrior #1-4.  Here we see Fury recall his years in Indochina and training guerillas to overthrow Castro, killing and screwing every step of the way.  Greg Rucka's Punisher #13 has us a bit disappointed since Marco Chechetto is missing on art, but it's still a great spy/espionage story.

Flashbacks - What can be said about Punisher War Zone #1-6?  A lot, apparently.  Considered by many to be an iconic turning point in the Punisher's publishing history, as Frank starts getting much more brutal and methodical on crime, and a colder personality in general.  Chuck Dixon is on words, the controversial (at least between us) John Romita Jr. is on pencils, and Klaus Janson is on inks.  If you find these comics the back bin or in a trade, pick it up.  Also,

Mail Call – We clear up the Tom Jane thing, and Blackstone asks us if a PG-13 Punisher movie is possible.  Justin then asks us about the limits who Frank will kill, including under 18s.  We also discuss what we all assume Frank does off-panel to make us okay with all of his killing.

Bullet Points – We help Marvel squeeze blood from a dead and buried stone by reluctantly discussing Untold Tales of the Punisher #1.  The best thing we can say is that it’s a self-contained story.  I then laud Greg Rucka’s Punisher #12 as a masterful thesis on how Frank can continue his warrior’s journey past the classic vigilante arc,  and Jake thinks it’s okay.

Flashbacks – Did you know that in the 80s and 90s Marvel had a war series called The ‘Nam?  Guess who was a guest star in said series?  Punisher Invades The ‘Nam includes issues #52 and #53 of the series, and includes one of Frank’s earliest behind-the-lines sniping mission.  It’s awesome.

Discharge Papers – We talk about a shitty Wall Street Journal article, and I get really depressed about Before Watchmen’s Minutemen and Silk Spectre.  Jake also talks upBlacksad, which I’m all on board with.  I then start running out of gas and try to explain why God Bless America is both a cartoonish, yet socially important movie.

Flashbacks - We review Hearts of Darkness and Ghost Rider Vol. 2 #4-5 in honor of the Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance movie.  There’s kind of a nice symmetry here, as the comics match the quality of the movie — somewhat entertaining, but not worth going out of your way to see.

19:50 Mail Call -Good lord, this Mail Call.  We go through a lot of topics here, such as the Punisher’s Island of Misfit Villains, Howard Chaykin, the Punisher’s guest appearance on the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, gun nuts who write corrections to the Punisher fan mail section, and so much more.  Remember people, large and in charge.Oh, we also deal with the continuity issues between Punisher 616 and MAX, which can be a headache if you make it one.

48:48 Bullet Points - We review the penultimate MAX issue of Aaron’s run, where Frank fights Elektra and the final tragic pieces fall into place for February’s issue.  Overall, it’s a great issue, and there’s some great touches on Frank’s early years.  Jake notices an artist’s error, and I make a quibble about subtly.

1:11:00 Flashbacks - Due to overwhelming popular demand, and by that I mean Jake suggested it over text, we review Mike Baron’s G-Force.  The gist?  Frank chases a cocaine-dealing French millionaire to a space station.  Also, we learn that even when a criminal shoots heroin into your system, that’s no excuse for bad hygiene.

1:53:18 Discharge Papers - I recommend Limitless and Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans, which are nutty in their own ways.  We also get financial tips from Nicholas Cage.  Jake  feels a bit dirty after watching Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and may not not be able to do a certain sexual act.  We also talk about the rise and fall of the Matrix movies.  I continue my horror streak by trying to describe the madness that is Franken-Fran.  Jake wraps things up by revealing how he made his wife a bigger nerd.

49:00 Flashbacks - We cover a lot of ground in Flashbacks today, starting with Mike Baron’s Punisher # 9, which would have been a rather average story if not for the twist at the end that made one of us mad as hell.  We then cover two Christmas specials — The Punisher Holiday Special #2 and Jason Aaron’s 2008 Punisher X-Mas Special — where too many writers think dressing up Frank as Santa is just the epitome of holiday literature.  We also learn that Vietnam gives you every life skill you’ll ever need, but the price is holiday innocence.

1:46:10 Discharge Papers - Jake talks about Frank Miller’s Daredevil run for five seconds, and then I bust in to talk about how much I hate Holy Terror.  We then talk about our refined tastes in anime before we segue into an interesting, if morbid discussion about the inevitable death of Stan Lee and how fandom is going to be just awful about it.

For instance, we’re running our first contest to celebrate!  In today’s podcast, we ask three questions related to Frank Castle that we’ve brought up in our show.  Each question is linked to a different prize, but you can answer all of them to improve your chances at winning something (limit 1 prize).

In today’s show, I give tips on how to make Atlantic City a non-miserable experience, and Jake brings up the aforementioned contest and how to enter.  We also learn that one of our loyal podcast listeners has a dog that got pretty injured, so if you can, check out his art site and send him some love and/or a commission.  We also discussed the upcoming Punisher TV show a bit in Mail Call, but no new info has come about for the show.

If having a contest wasn’t enough to excite you, then how about a new interview!  In the Interrogation Room, we get to the long-promised interview with Marco Chechetto, the current artist on Greg Rucka’s Punisher series!  Marco was very welcoming and considerate to our request for an interview, but he did not want to come on the show due to English not being his first language.  He did allow an email correspondence, and we read the transcripts in the show.

Finally we get to brass tacks in Bullet Points, where we read the soon-to-be-ended Punisher MAX #19 and Punisher #5.  Short answer?  Buy them both, they’re great.  In Flashbacks, we read issues #6-8 of Mike Baron’s run on the original Punisher on-going series.  They’re great too, but for different reasons.  Hint:  Plutonium and gay Wall Street moguls.  In Discharge Papers, Jake lays down his opinion on the new Evanescence CD and I complain about definitions of things.

Afterwards, Jake and I go in-depth on the newly announced Punisher tv show.  We have incredibly mixed feelings about it, with us eventually siding on “It sounds terrible.”  In Flashbacks, we talk about a “classic” Punisher story, Punisher & Wolverine: Revelation which contained the second and last story about “Angelic Punisher.”  It’s a long story, we explain it in the podcast.

Finally, in Discharge Papers, Jake and I talk about why Saw is awful and I recommend zombie and camcorder horror movies.  In the next podcast, we will discuss classic Mike Baron issues and new Punisher comics.

In Flashbacks, we review Punisher 2099 #1-3, where it was clearly made by 7 year old children who are amazing people.  Then we review the Marvel Knights Punisher 2099 one-shot, where we agree that even Kirkman can make a swing-and-a-miss.  In Discharge Papers, Jake and I confirm we are horrible people.

Jake and I wrap things up in Discharge Papers talking about a Tim Burton classic and I harp on about the DC reboot, which surely no other comic podcaster has done before.

Then we get into Greg Rucka’s Punisher #2 in Bullet Points, where we make some dark predictions and talk about how pretty Frank is.  Afterwards, we progress into Flashbacks where we discuss Spider-Man #161-162, with special guest Nightcrawler!  In it, we learn that Spider-Man is the true monster and when we learn who the villain is, we find out the true victims are the readers.  Finally, we spiral into our personal B.S. in Discharge Papers, where we discuss artistic liberties vis a vis cowboys and tommy guns.

In Bulletpoints, we discuss Rucka’s inaugural issue issue on Punishe along with Jason Aaron’s Frank arc in Punisher Max.  It’s also speculated that Steve Dillion photo-traces from Dane’s family photo album.

Moving onto Flaschbacks, we get into a knock down drag out fight over Klaus Janson as we discuss the Mike Baron run on Punisher.  Thing end with a discharge papers we were discuss the ludicrousy of the Venom symbiotic suit.

In Flashbacks, we celebrate the Captain America movie by discussing our opinions on the movie, and then talk about the 3-issue Cap/Punisher  team-up known as Blood and Glory.  If you read Tom Clancy novels or watch ’90s covert ops movies, then you already know what the story is about.  In Discharge Papers, we talk about Hobo with a Shotgun, Wilfred, Queen and Country, and, um, Power Rangers.  Listen it might be better for you guys to skip that part, but hey, it’s your call.

Next podcast we’ll focus on the “Bullseye” arc from MAX, but Flashbacks is up for grabs.  Suggest us some comics and if like ‘em, we’ll read ‘em!
