Women's Tennis : RAMS end season with TWO Regular Season Foothill Conference Titles

Alexis Mariano made it look easy on the way to clinching Foothill Conference tennis titles in singles and doubles.

Mariano finished off her freshman season at Victor Valley College with another dominating performance, defeating Rio Hondo College's No.1 singles player Stephanie Rodriguez 6-0, 6-0. The win caps off a season in which Mariano only lost once in singles.

Mariano and Deziree Cornejo also clinched the Foothill Conference championship in doubles with an 8-2 win over Rodriguez and Chloe Guillen from Rio Hondo College. Mariano and Cornejo finish the season undefeated in conference play as a duo.

The Roadrunners took the overall win 6-3 against the Rams (2-9, 2-6 FC), but VVC will have the top seeds in both singles and doubles when the Foothill Conference tournament takes place April 13 at College of the Desert.

"This season was really tough starting out because I didn't have any returners," VVC head coach Kara Jenkins said. "All of the girls that have been playing this year, it's either their first year playing tennis at all, or they're freshman, it's their first year playing college tennis."

"So looking back I'm really happy with how things ended, especially with Allie as a freshman completely sweeping the field in singles, and Allie and Deziree teaming up to beat everybody in doubles. It's pretty awesome."

Mariano wasn't on the court for long during her singles match against Rodriguez, putting on an impressive display on a windy afternoon at the VVC tennis complex.

"Having to adjust to the wind was probably the toughest thing today," Mariano said.
Mariano and Cornejo credit their doubles’ success to team chemistry.

"She's very consistent and she's very positive," Mariano said of Cornejo. "She always brings me up."

The pairing of Granite Hills' graduate Mariano and Serrano grad Cornejo has been one of highlights of the 2013 for the VVC women's program.

"I have a great partner," Cornejo said. "And I'm used to playing doubles so I was expecting some good turnouts. But to be undefeated was just really a blessing."

VVC Wrestler Ryan McWatters wraps up perfect season with state title

Ryan McWatters and Victor Valley College coach Scott Seeley set a preseason goal of not allowing his opponents to score any offensive points this season.

The Rams sophomore stayed close to the task as he wrapped up a perfect 26-0 season by winning a California Community College Athletic Association wrestling title at 174 pounds Saturday at West Hills College.

McWatters defeated Fresno City College’s Kevin Corbett 12-9 in the finals to become the second Rams wrestler to win an individual state title in three years and earn his second straight state medal after placing third last year.

Opponents scored just six offensive points against McWatters this season, while he shattered the old school record with 115 takedowns, Seeley said.

"Ryan had an excellent year," Seeley said. "He really worked hard in the offseason. I’m expecting to see some good things from him in the future."

McWatters wrestled this weekend with a gash above his left eye that he received at the CCCAA South Regional a week ago. It required either stitches or sterile strips, and McWatters opted for the strips.

Earlier in the day, McWatters decisioned Sierra College’s Quintan Becker 4-1 to reach the finals.

McWatters graduated from Sultana in 2011. He qualified to state as a junior and a senior.

Two Rams headed to Tabor College

Two Victor Valley College men’s basketball players will continue their college careers at Tabor College, an NAIA school located in Hillsboro, Kan.

Justin Malan, an Victor Valley High graduate, averaged 8.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game last year at VVC and will be a junior when he joins the Bluejays next season.

"It’s a nice small school, and I liked the enthusiasm for sports on campus," said Malan, who will major in kinesiology. "They had a lot to offer all the way around."

Joining him will be Tory Dudgeon, who was an assistant coach under his father Tom at VVC last season. Dudgeon played at San Diego Christian College in 2010 after spending two seasons as a player at VVC. Dudgeon, a Granite Hills High graduate, will be a senior at Tabor, and will also major in kinesiology.

"They had everything I wanted as far as a school," Dudgeon said. "The coaching staff is great, it just seemed to fit. Another selling point is most of the games are streamed online so family can watch me play."

Both Malan and Dudgeon estimated that 75 percent of their schooling will be paid for with athletic and academic scholarships.

Wrestlers Place at State

The Victor Valley College wrestling team was already guaranteed two state placers at the CCCAA Wrestling Championship, but neither of the Rams left Santa Rosa College as an individual champion on Saturday.

Ryan McWatters — the state's top ranked 174-pounder — finished third, and Ray Delgado ended up fourth. Both wrestlers reached the semifinals and lost.

McWatters fell behind 8-3 after the first period of his semifinal match against Sierra College's Dylin Rodriguez. He battled back to tie it in the third, but gave up a late takedown to lose 13-11.

McWatters, a freshman who graduated from Sultana, knocked off Bakersfield College's Lance Castaneda 8-2 in a consolation match and finished third when his opponent in the placing match injury defaulted.

Delgado's semifinal match ended a little more quickly when Austin Wulfert pinned him in the first period. Delgado came back to decision Sacramento City College's Nathan Monck 8-4, and then was pinned in the first period of the third-place match by Fresno City College's Junior Davila.

It's the third time in four years that VVC had more than one placer at the state championship and the sixth year in a row with at least one.

Both McWatters and Delgado qualified to the CIF State Championship in each of their last two years in high school. Delgado — who wrestled at Oak Hills — placed sixth last year and finished in the top 12 as a junior. McWatters finished in the top 16 in February and won a match in 2010.

Michelle Griffith and Nikki Yahnke have been playing soccer together for much of their lives.

The self-described best friends have played together since the seventh grade, a journey that has taken them through Hesperia High School and Victor Valley College.

Now they have two more years together at Missouri Valley College after signing letters of intent Tuesday.

Four VVC soccer players sign with Kansas Wesleyan

The soccer pipeline from Victor Valley College to Kansas Wesleyan University continued to have fresh talent flowing through it Thursday, as four Rams signed letters of intent to continue their collegiate soccer careers for the NAIA powerhouse.

Midfielder Philip Peralta, striker Jose 'Nacho' Velasco and defenders Javier Ortega and Andrew Paredes all accepted scholarships to the private school in Salina, Kansas and will play for a team that finished last season ranked eighth in the country and was ranked as high as sixth at one point.

Ortega and Gonzalez attended Silverado, Peralta went to Barstow and Paredes attended Serrano.

"They came out and were the right fit academically and athletically," Kansas Wesleyan coach Mike Dibbini said. "They came out and touched the ball with our boys and when they got in the mix they were very competitive. All of them bring a different element to the game, and I think every single one of them will do something to make an impact in the program."

Velasco immediately was drawn to the opportunity to compete for a nationally-ranked team.

"What caught my attention was their ranking," Velasco said. "It’s competitive and it’s a high level. I want to get better and I believe if I get out there, I’ll improve with the bunch of good players that they have out there."

The four new players join three Victor Valley College alumni who will be seniors for the Coyotes this upcoming season: Jeremy Mireles, Jacob DeLeon and Richard Gonzalez.

That pipeline and familiarity with players helped Peralta decide to attend Kansas Wesleyan.

"I had two friends that went there last year, and we talked about it and it just got my interest going even more," Peralta said.

Dibbini and VVC coach Mike Bradbury began a relationship seven years ago when Dibbini, who is from Palmdale, recognized that the soccer talent in the area was untapped and he called Bradbury.

"He knows the style of play that I play, and his system of play is very similar," Bradbury said. "These kids already understand that system of play, and they’re high-caliber players."

Before the four players signed their letters of intent, Bradbury made them all promise one thing: That they would graduate and return home with nothing less than a Bachelor’s degree.

"Our mission statement at VVC is to facilitate a college experience that leads to an education that is fueled by and paid for by soccer," Bradbury said. "I believe in that 100 percent. When we send them there, I expect them to come back with no less than a degree."
VVC Wrestler Eric Lopez wins CCCAA State Wrestling Championship Title

Freshman Eric Lopez became the first Victor Valley College wrestler to win a California Community College Athletic Association title on Saturday night, and he did it against a former high school crosstown rival.

Lopez major decisioned Cerritos College freshman Cody Bollinger 10-2 in the finals of the 157 pound division.

Lopez was the third Rams wrestler to reach the finals after Phillip Miller in 2000 and Brandon McKnight in 2007.

Lopez recorded three major decisions in the tournament and earned the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament award. He finished his season with a 25-4 record, and three of his losses were against four-year wrestlers in open-division tournaments.

"I’m proud of Eric, just proud of him," VVC coach Scott Seeley said. "He didn’t make a mistake. It was nearly a perfect match."

Seeley said Lopez dominated throughout the championship match and probably had close to four minutes of riding time against Bollinger. Lopez led 7-1 after two periods, and Bollinger scored his two points on escapes.

"I told Eric to stay on him tough, punish him, stay on him, stay on him. That’s what he did," Seeley said.

Lopez, a former Hesperia High wrestler, beat Bollinger, a Sultana grad, 6-3 in the Santa Ana Tournament in early October. Bollinger, though, defeated Lopez twice when they were still in high school.

Lopez was impressive earlier in the day in his semifinal match. He scored an 11-0 major decision over Sierra College’s Tyler Johnson. Bollinger reached the final by pinning Taylor Sare in 8 minutes flat.

Rams heavyweight Cheyne Cook also began the day in the semifinals, but he lost to Cerritos College’s Juan Lucero 4-2 in overtime. He came back to win a consolation semifinal before getting pinned in the third-place match to finish in fourth.

Seeley said Cook nearly got a point from riding in the OT period of his semifinal match, but Lucero got up and scored on Cook when he wasn’t successful on his single shot.

"He had a great year," Seeley said. "He took fourth, but I would have liked to have seen him wrestle for first."

Victor Valley College’s Jimmy Arazia (149) went 0-2 on Saturday, but still finished eighth to grab the Rams’ third state medal.

The three state placers is second best in VVC history. Two years ago when the state meet was also held at VVC, four Rams medaled.

Seeley credited assistant coaches Kevin Chilton, Mike LaBrosse and Kirk Riding for the team’s success.

Fresno City College won the team title, and its coach Paul Keyshaw took home his sixth title which tied him for most in CCCAA history.
The Victor Valley College men’s soccer team knocked off perennial Foothill Conference power Rio Hondo College 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Rams hadn’t beaten the Road Runners in eight years. Rio Hondo compiled a 92-13-2 record in conference play since 1997, including eight straight championships.

Victor Valley (6-6-1, 2-1 FC) scored both of its goals in the second half. Kenny St. Pierre opened the scoring off an assist from Elvin Viernes, and Phil Peralta made it 2-0 with an assist from Marcus Thoms.

Rams goalie Josh Robledo, filling in for the injured Brian Perez, made four saves in the shutout.
Mending injuries, molding minds - VVC Athletics Trainer exudes contagious energy, passion, tenacity (Daily Press Article)

As a tenacious tri-sport competitor in high school, Julia 'Jaye' Tashima recalls feeling the sting - literally - of not having an athletic trainer to treat the broken fingers, torn shoulders and sprained ankles of the female players.

"I played all-out. There’s no half for me," said Tashima, who immersed herself in softball, basketball and volleyball at Hononegah High School in Rockton, Ill. "I know what it’s like not having someone to help you."

So the summer before her senior year, Tashima took a crash course in athletic training at a nearby university and stepped up as her school’s athletic trainer through her graduation in 1976, igniting a passion that’s since guided her life’s course.

Today Tashima lives and breathes sports medicine through supporting and educating athletes at Victor Valley College, where she’s worked in athletic training for more than two decades after stints servicing some of the world’s best athletes, from soccer players and swimmers at the ’84 Olympics to speed skaters at the national championships.

"I want to propagate a group of people who are knowledgeable and will help the next generation, their friends, their kids," she said.

Tashima’s contagious energy, warm personality and relentless drive continuously push her athletes to succeed in school and sports, and lifts the spirits of her students and colleagues. Her impact on the community has earned her the honor as one of the Daily Press 2010 Most Inspiring Women of the Year.

"I don’t know everyone who works on the campus, but I would venture that she has effected more positive change in more students than just about anybody else at the school," said nominator and VVC alumnus David Zook, who now serves as chief of staff for 1st District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt. "She would let people use her car if they didn’t have one. She would help people get medical care if they didn’t have insurance. She would help people find places to live if they needed somewhere to go. She would sew people’s clothing. She would stay at the hospital with an injured athlete who had nobody else. She would do anything for someone in need."

In the heat of the fall sports season, Tashima logs 14-hour days, six days a week.

When asked how she musters the energy, she shrugged and said, "I just feed off the kids."

Tashima also loves multi-tasking - which is good because it’s a must when juggling four positions that could each be full-time jobs.

"The demands on her are unbelievable," said VVC Head Football Coach David Hoover, adding she 'does magic' with a barebones budget. "I’ve never been around another administrator that’s as hands-on, that cared as much as she does for her players. If I didn’t have her support, I’m not sure I would still be here."

Tashima manages all scheduling, facilities, regulations, payments and more for VVC’s 14 sports as athletic director; teaches two lectures and four labs in sports medicine as an adjunct professor; treats and prevents injuries as head athletic trainer; and, as of November, handles complaints of student behavior as coordinator of student discipline.

"I’d love to be the ‘Diva of Discipline,’ but they won’t let me put that on my card," she said with a wide grin.

Athletic training student Joanna Herman, 19, said "Mrs. T" commands students’ respect by setting high expectations while showing she genuinely cares by "bending over backwards to help you out."

Every Thanksgiving she invites all athletes and students without a place to eat over to her home. She ensures her athletes get academic counseling and motivates them to keep their grades up.

"She can be pushy, but she knows what’s best for us," said VVC soccer player and sports medicine student Mario Cisneros, 19. He recalls itching to get back on the field after spraining his ankle last July, but said Tashima advised him to stay off it until it fully healed and now his leg is stronger for it.

Growing up in a small farming town, Tashima said her parents valued honesty and service to others. While her father worked for a farm equipment manufactuer, Tashima and her six siblings would tag along to the inner city of Rockford and assist their mother as she taught adult education and GED preparation.

After high school, Tashima earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Northern Illinois University, where she helped treat athletes in 24 sports. But her next move toward a career in athletics was far from conventional.

While working as a gas station clerk out of college, she literally ran off with the circus and served as a Circus Vargas marketing director for a few years, locating in a city anywhere from two days to six weeks.

"My goal was to get to California for the Olympics," said Tashima, who eventually worked at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and earned a master of sport science from United States Sports Academy.

On her way to Los Angeles, she ran the gamut for the traveling circus, from getting quotes on 40 tons of hay to prepping for elephant races on waterbeds.

In the early 1980s, Tashima had her first encounter with Victorville at the circus on the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds, when the city was mostly "open desert and a lot of blowing sand."

She planted her roots in the Victor Valley shortly after she married her husband, Eugene, in 1987 and he took the head football coaching job at VVC.

Her two children, 14-year-old Kenji and 9-year- old Nathaniel, grew up in the training room, she said. They don’t squirm around bloody, bruised athletes; they turn to her and say, "Mom, you need an ice pack?"

Tashima said her favorite parts of her job come when former students e-mail her to share their successes, or watching students graduate who narrowly missed a life trapped in gangs, drugs or minimum-wage limitations.

She gets teary-eyed when she recalls the graduation of several football players whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. When she found out in August 2005, she rallied other administrators to waive their fees and help them with food and rent.

In the little free time she musters, Tashima has maintained her own athletic build. But she doesn’t play sports like she used to because of the brutal toll on her body, having survived five knee surgeries, back surgery, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, two torn shoulders, dislocations and more.

Nearing age 52, Tashima has no plans to retire anytime soon. She still has her eyes set on helping the college build a stadium and event venue, which she envisions housing not only sporting events but concerts, graduations, rodeos and more.

"Like my mom always says," Tashima said, "we’d rather wear out than rust out."
VVC football players commit

When the Victor Valley College football team began its 2009 season, sophomore linebacker Mike Matthews was fourth on the depth chart on a team that starts three.

By the third game, Matthews was starting, and by the sixth he was the team captain.

The Serrano graduate played well enough to earn an invitation to become a preferred walk-on at New Mexico State, where he is already enrolled for the spring semester. He carried a 3.5 grade point average at VVC and added 20 pounds of muscle.

"I've always had a commitment to do things I love like football," Matthews said. "I've always had a drive, I've never slacked off. Since high school, I haven't slacked off in the classroom. I've taken it over to the football field. Even though I wasn't born with natural talent, I've worked my way up."

Matthews said the New Mexico State defensive recruiting coordinator told him that last year's starting linebackers graduated, and he'll have a good chance to play.

Matthews is one of eight Rams players who are already committed to move on.

Traven Medawar, an offensive lineman and Hesperia graduate, is going to Division II Benedictine College (Kan.).

Wide receiver Pelton Smalls and quarterback Travis Hunter (both Barstow High graduates) will be attending Kansas Wesleyan University, which has become a common destination for VVC men’s and women’s soccer players. They will likely be joined by former Serrano lineman Erik Wilkerson.

Nose tackle Darnell Hicks is going to Texas A&M Kingsville. Defensive lineman Luis Mitchell, a Barstow graduate, will be going to NAIA school Ottawa University (Kan.). Wide receiver Donald Fusilier is going to Lindenwood University (Mo.).

VVC coach Dave Hoover said all-state cornerback Devonte Craig hasn’t signed yet, but is getting interest from Utah State and New Mexico State. He added that defensive lineman Anthony Daniels will likely play Div. II.

"We do not stop until we get everybody placed," Hoover said. "Everybody looks at wins and losses, but my job is about getting someone to the next level."

Football: Rams win four-OT Thriller

Devonte Craig intercepted Mt. San Jacinto College’s Carmen Boyer on the last play to help Victor Valley College knock off the Eagles 42-36 in quadruple overtime in the final regular season game for both teams on Saturday.

Craig’s interception was his second of the game, and he also returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a TD. His interception followed Robert Love’s go-ahead touchdown pass to Donald Fusilier earlier in the period.

VVC (6-4, 5-2 American Mountain Conference) finished with its first winning record in three seasons, and has an outside chance at making the playoffs if Southwestern College beat Golden West College on Saturday night.

Love finished the game 16 of 34 passing for 215 yards and three TDs. He also rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

Love connect with Fusilier seven times — twice for scores — for 121 yards. Fusilier finished the season with 46 receptions for 676 yards.

Mel Carmichael ran for 163 yards on 30 carries, while Philip Peralta made two field goals.

For the Eagles (1-9, 1-6 AMC), Boyer was 21 of 41 passing for 302 yards with two TDs and three interceptions.
The teams were flagged a combined 29 times.

Men's Basketball Playoffs: CITRUS COLLEGE 95, VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE 81

At Glendora, the Rams lost in the second round of the CCCAA State Playoffs.
VVC (19-15) got off to a slow start and trailed by 20 points at the half. Citrus College, ranked No. 1 in Southern California, shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half.
The Rams rallied in the second half and cut the gap to 91-81 with about 2 minutes left in the game, but that was the closest they could get. Citrus College had 21 offensive rebounds to Victor Valley’s five.
"They were pretty aggressive on the offensive boards and they beat us there," VVC assistant coach Rich Vargas said.
Dwight Gordon had a game-high 41 points for the Rams and added nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. He went 5-for-5 from 3-point distance. Tory Dudgeon had eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Tim Sanders tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
On Wednesday, the Rams won their first playoff game in program history, beating Long Beach City College 87-83.
"It was just a great season," Vargas said. "Great group of guys. They worked hard. ... Now we accomplished our two goals - make it to the playoffs and win one game to take us to this game. So this group of players set the bar high for the next group of guys."
VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE (81) -- Gordon 41, Sanders 12, Crouch 10, Jones 8, Stacy 2, Dudgeon 2, Wilson 2, Evans 2, McGrath 2.
CITRUS COLLEGE (95) -- Bennett 25, Reaves 14, Payne 12, Dorsey 8, Thompson 7, Gibbs 6, Eatmon 6, K. Johnson 6, J. Johnson 4, Rivera 3, Stewart 2, Zargaryan 2.
Halftime - Citrus College 53-33. 3-point field goals -- VVC 6 (Gordon 5, Sanders); Citrus College 8 (Reaves 4, Bennett 3, Rivera). Fouled out : Rivera, Eatmon (C). Technical fouls : Jones (V), Bennett (C)

RAMS MAKE HISTORY : VVC comes back, earns first playoff win

The same perseverance that got the Victor Valley College men’s basketball team into the playoffs was on display in front of about 650 screaming fans at the VVC gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Rams charged back from a nine-point halftime deficit to beat Long Beach City College 87-83 in the first round of the CCCAA state playoffs. When the clock ran out, fans rushed the court to celebrate the first post-season victory in team history.
"We have that will to compete and win; we never give up," VVC coach Tom Dudgeon said. "Without high-quality character there and sophomore leadership, we don’t pull that off. ... And without the support of the fans and the football program (several Rams football players and coaches attended), I don’t know that we’d pull that off, either. The crowd gave us that boost."
The Rams move on to face Citrus College on the road Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Rams sophomore guard Danard Crouch came up big with a career-high 31 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. VVC guard Dwight Gordon had a double-double with 22 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, and Rams forward Tim Sanders was a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.
VVC (19-14) trailed for much of the game but began to chip away at the Vikings’ advantage in the second half. A Sanders 3-pointer gave the Rams an 82-81 lead with 2 minutes, 10 seconds to play. After a Long Beach foul, Crouch made one of two free throws to make it 83-81 with 1:25 to go.
The Vikings (15-15) tied it when Reggie Patterson made a pair of free throws with 25 seconds to play.
Rather than playing a half-court game and running out clock before a final shot attempt, VVC pushed the tempo and surprised the Vikings. Sanders broke free and took a long inbounds pass from Tory Dudgeon, finding himself all alone for the two-handed dunk that put VVC up 85-83 and drew a roar from the crowd.
The Vikings had 16 seconds left to tie it, but the Long Beach City ball-handler stepped out of bounds to return possession to the Rams. Crouch was fouled, missed the ensuing free throw and got his own rebound.
Crouch was fouled again and nailed both shots to put the game away.
Crouch hit four three-pointers in the game, and VVC hit 10 as a team - six of them in the second half. It was Long Beach City that had the hot shooting early on, sinking eight 3s in the first half but just one in the second.
"(VVC) made more plays than us," Vikings coach Gary Anderson said. "They made some big shots; we made some big mistakes. It was a hard-fought game, and they have a good team."
The Rams’ next task is not an enviable one; Citrus College is ranked No. 1 in Southern California and second in the state.
"(The players) do believe that we’re going to win Saturday night," Tom Dudgeon said. "That’s just who they are. They believe we’re going to win."
LONG BEACH CITY (83)
Patterson 20, Gwin 15, Whitney 15, Hurd 11, Ramos 9, White 7, Mitchell 6.
VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE (87)
Crouch 31, Gordon 22, Sanders 16, Dudgeon 6, Wilson 4, McGrath 4, Stacy 2, Jones 2.
Halftime : Long Beach City, 54-45. 3-point field goals " Long Beach City 9 (Whitney 3, Ramos 2, Mitchell 2, White, Hurd); Victor Valley College 10 (Crouch 4, Sanders 3, Dudgeon 2, Gordon).
Baseball beats Barstow

Victor Valley got a strong pitching performance from right-hander Scott Strunk, and designated hitter Eddie Hernandez sparked the offense with three hits as the Rams went on to defeat visiting Barstow 12-5 Monday afternoon.
Strunk (3-1) went six innings, scattering five hits and striking out four. He gave up four runs, but just two of those were earned.
The Rams (9-7) tallied 10 hits, with second baseman Mike Mierish and first baseman Freddy Antuna getting two each. Antuna led off the sixth inning with a solo home run that snapped a 4-4 tie and put the host team ahead for good.
Victor Valley was scheduled to play Imperial Valley today, but that game is being rescheduled as part of a doubleheader later in the season.

VVCC Men's Basketball Team Makes State Playoffs / Gordon earns All-Foothill Conference Honors

It was announced Monday, by the seeding committee for all Southern California conferences, that the Victor Valley Community College men’s basketball team had been invited to participate in the state playoffs. This invitation represents the second trip the college’s men’s basketball team has made to the state playoffs.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Dwight Gordon, point guard for Victor Valley College, earned first-team All-Foothill Conference honors. Gordon is a 6-foot- 2 sophomore guard, who averaged 21.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season. He is joined by sophomores Danard Crouch and Tory Dudgeon who earned honorable mention honors to the All-Foothill Conference team.
The Victor Valley College men’s basketball team made the State Community College playoffs and will host a first-round game on Wednesday.
The Rams haven’t made the playoffs in minimum of 20 years playing in one of the toughest conferences in the state, VVC coach Tom Dudgeon said. The Foothill Conference boasts 30 more wins than any other conference in the state, and all five teams that made the playoffs get to host first round games.
VVC (19-12, 6-8 FC) finished fifth in the conference but had some quality wins to help it advance to the postseason. The Rams have beaten four teams with 20 or more wins this year.
"I knew there were still hopes," Dudgeon said. "But then to get a home game out of it, that surprised me more."
The Rams take on Long Beach City College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in their home gym on the VVC campus.
"I hope the community will come out and support a group of really good kids and really good basketball players," Dudgeon said. "We’ve got some local kids and I want to see this community come out and get behind these kids."

"(Gordon) didn't let us down; he had a game," VVC assistant coach Rich Vargas said. "He also had two assists, a steal, a blocked shot and he took a charge."

The loss dealt a major blow to the Rams' (18-13, 6-8 Foothill Conference) playoff hopes, but Vargas said they "still have an outside chance" to get in when playoff draws are announced today.
Gordon makes an impact with Rams : VVC can make the playoffs with a win

It's not uncommon this season to catch a Division I coach or scout watching Victor Valley College guard Dwight Gordon.

Teams such as UC Riverside, UC Irivine, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Idaho, Portland St., Hawaii, Colorado St. and Utah Valley State have shown interest in the Los Osos alum.

Gordon, a 6-foot-2 guard, leads the Foothill Conference in scoring (21.2 per game) and rebounding (8.6), and is eighth in assists (3.1).

"He gets to the basket," said sophomore guard Tory Dudgeon, comparing Gordon's game to the Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade. "I sometimes find myself in the game just watching him go and wonder, how did he do that? Just some of the shots that he can put up — none of his shots are really bad shots."

His play has helped an undersized and sometimes injured Victor Valley College team climb into the state rankings and remain in playoff contention. He has also opened the door to possibly earning not only all-Foothill Conference honors, but all-state as well.

The Rams (18-12), who will finish with their second-straight winning record and likely in fifth place, need to win against Chaffey at home today at 3 p.m. in order to qualify to the state playoffs. VVC knocked off the Panthers earlier this year behind Gordon's 33 points and also won the final game of last season to knock Chaffey out of the playoffs.

"I think he's the best player in the conference," fourth-year Victor Valley College coach Tom Dudgeon said. "I really believe he's going to make all-state. ... He's bought into what we do and plays within the team concept, which is a rare quality today. And he's blessed with a lot of talent."

Dudgeon, who has also coached at Rio Hondo College and Citrus College as well as Big Bear High School and Granite Hills, went on to say that Gordon is the most talented guard he's ever coached.

That's quite a turnaround for a player who didn't have any Division I schools knocking on his door when he graduated from Los Osos in 2006.

He played varsity in both his junior and senior years at the Rancho Cucamonga-area high school, starting his senior season. He was the team's third-leading scorer, averaging 9.8 points per game, and earned second-team all-league honors.

It's easy to be go unnoticed when University of Utah guard Curtis Eatmon is the star of the team.

"In high school I was more of a role player," Gordon said. "We had a point guard that was going Division I, and a post player that was pretty decent. We were just a balanced team."

Gordon, a self-described gym rat, started lifting weights more consistently after high school, and his body started maturing.

"I was athletic and long in high school," Gordon said. "I've just grown."

Because Gordon felt that he could play Division I, he decided to go the junior college route. His first stop was in Mesa, Ariz., after high school, but a coaching problem led Gordon back to Southern California.

"I didn't want to waste a year," Gordon said.

He said he chose to go to VVC instead of staying local and going to Chaffey to get away from distractions, and came in after the Rams had graduated most of their team from the previous season.

Gordon isn't the only one expected to move on after the season. Tory Dudgeon, Tim Sanders, Danard Crouch and Kenny McGrath are all expected to sign with lower-level schools. If all five sign scholarships, that would mean that 11 sophomores in Dudgeon's time at VVC have received scholarships

Men's Baseball gets 20 hits, beats Oxnard

Sophomore Thomas Southern stroked a run-scoring single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to give the Rams (4-2) a 14-13 win over Oxnard at the Bash at the Beach.

Anthony Andrew and Alex Neelans had five hits each in the Rams' 20-hit attack.

Mike Cataneso (2-0) got the win, pitching the final two innings.

Men's Basketball upsets Chaffey

RANCHO CUCAMONGA • Dwight Gordon finished with 33 points to help the Victor
Valley College men's basketball team upset Chaffey College (ranked seventh
in California) in a Foothill Conference game on Saturday.

Gordon shot 12 of 14 from the floor and 9 of 14 from the line while also
grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out five assists. He scored 24 of his
points in the second half and his game total was two points off of his
season high.

VVC (16-9, 4-3 FC) finished with 20 assists, led by Tory Dudgeon's six and
Danard Crouch's five. Dudgeon also had three steals, and Crouch returned
from a high ankle sprain.

Cordel Wilson added 18 points and seven rebounds, and Kenny McGrath finished
with 13 points and four rebounds.

The Rams never trailed in the contest and led by 18 at 61-43 in the second
half.

"This game's a game of runs," VVC assistant coach Rich Vargas said. "They
have excellent shooters and we didn't fold. We led the entire way and didn't
fold, making good decisions."

Last season, Victor Valley College defeated Chaffey College in the final
game of the season to knock the Panthers out of the playoffs. The Rams next
State Wrestling Championships : Final Results

The Victor Valley College wrestling team finished off the CCCAA State
Wrestling Championship with four placers on Saturday at the school's gym.
The Rams finished 13th as a team and their four placers tied for eighth most
at the tournament. Twenty-one out of 22 teams had a placer.
"If you look at the state rankings, they weren't ranked in the top 10, and
they all placed," VVC coach Scott Seeley said. "That's improvement. They
came out of nowhere and knocked tough wrestlers off. ... That's a positive
sign."
Leading the way for the Rams was freshman heavyweight Jeff Jones, who placed
fifth. He went 2-1 on the day and all three matches ended in a pin. Seeley
said Jones improved greatly over the season.
Freshman Tym Quigg (125) went 1-1 to finish seventh.
Sophomore Ray Bowen (141) lost both of his consolation matches by major
decision and by fall and finished in eighth.
Freshman Daniel Gudino (149) was pinned in his first match of the day and
had to default out in his last match due to an arm injury to take eighth
place.
West Hills freshman Shad Manigault, a Hesperia assistant coach, went 3-0 on
the day to finish in third place.
Fresno City College won its 10th team title and its first since 2006. The
Rams' Angel Olea (125), who beat Quigg in the quarterfinals, defended his
state title from a year ago and earned the tournament's MVP.

State Wrestling Championships : Dec. 12th results

While he had the disadvantage of wrestling up two weight
divisions, Victor Valley College freshman Daniel Gudino had the clock on his
side Friday.
Fresno City College's Mike Banks appeared to record a tying takedown in the
final seconds of their 149-pound division consolation match of the CCCAA
State Wrestling Championship, but it came after time expired and the former
125-pound CIF state placer at Hesperia advanced to guarantee himself a
state-placing spot.
"I think I deserved to win," said Gudino, who had to move up two weight
classes from 133 pounds due to missing a hydration test. "I worked hard,
went up two weight classes. I wasn't expecting much. And here I am placing
at state. It's a good feeling."
Gudino was one of four Rams to advance to the second day. Freshmen Tym Quigg
(125) and Jeff Jones (heavyweight), and sophomore Ray Bowen (141) also
advanced via pin in their consolation matches. VVC is 11th in the team
standings.
"These guys are peaking at the right time," VVC coach Scott Seeley said.
Quigg, Bowen and Gudino each won in the first round then lost in the second
to a No. 1 seed, but came back to win their consolation matches to guarantee
a place.
"That's a test of character," Seeley said. "When you're at a state meet,
it's emotion. To lose those tough matches and then come back and dominate
those matches, that's a sign of character. I'm really proud of those guys."
West Hills freshman Shad Manigault (149), who was a Hesperia assistant coach
last season, also advanced. Manigault was a CIF State Champion at 140 in
2006 at Northview.
VVC's fifth wrestler, sophomore Matt McCauley (174), advanced to the state
tournament for the second year in a row, but lost both of his matches.
Seeley said that McCauley didn't get favorable matchups on Friday.
Quigg advanced when he scored a quick takedown and then pinned Modesto
Junior College's Edgar Paez in 36 seconds.
"I just wanted to win," Quigg said. "I went out there ready, relaxed. After
that first takedown, I knew I had won it."
Only a few minutes later, Bowen followed Quigg to the second day by pinning
Lassen College's Matt Higa in 1:55.
"I've been training hard," said Bowen, who advanced to the CIF-Southern
Section Masters Tournament in high school. "It's pretty important to me.
I've never placed this high in something, so I'm pretty pumped about it."
To advance to today's action, Jones had to beat Bakersfield College's David
Travis, who only a week earlier beat the Victor Valley college wrestler for
third place at the Southern Regionals. Jones was the aggressor early on and
eventually pinned Travis.
The second and final day of action picks up today at 10 a.m. with the
semifinals, followed by the consolation rounds and the medal matches through
third place. The finals ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the matches to
follow at 6:30 p.m.
*NOTES:* VVC has had at least one wrestler place in each of Seeley's three
seasons as coach. ... Fresno City College leads the team standings with 71
points and has nine wrestlers remaining.

VVC Wrestlers look forward to state championships

It had been a low-key season for the Victor Valley College wrestling team
heading into the CCCAA southern regional tournament last weekend.
So much so that 125-pound wrestler Tym Quigg, who has missed considerable
time due to a concussion, went in with the team's best record at 13-7,
followed by 141-pounder Ray Bowen at 8-8.
Still, Quigg and Bowen along with teammates Daniel Gudino (149 pounds), Matt
McCauley (174) and Jeff Jones (heavyweight) all finished in the top six to
qualify to the CCCAA State Wrestling Tournament, which begins Friday at the
Victor Valley College gym.
"The expectations weren't real high for our guys going in," Victor Valley
College assistant coach Rocky Humphrey said. "So they were relaxed, had a
good time, and none of them had to cut any weight. I really believe that
they're not as worn down as everybody else."
Twelve wrestlers in the 10 community college divisions will compete in the
two-day tournament for one of the top eight places in a double-elimination
format.
While it's a much smaller tournament than the CIF State Finals, there are
several wrestlers competing that placed high at that tournament while in
high school.
Of the group of VVC qualifiers, only McCauley and Gudino have state
experience at any level. McCauley, a Silverado graduate, qualified to last
year's community college championships, while Gudino placed at last year's
CIF State Finals as a senior at Hesperia.
It may be a tough chore for Gudino to place at this tournament after having
to move up two weight classes due to missing the hydration test at 133
pounds. Quigg (Granite Hills), Bowen (Sultana) and Jones (Durham/Northern
Section) all advanced to sectional masters tournaments in high school, but
not to state.
"It's nice to know that I got above that barrier," Quigg said. "So now I
just want to place. I think I have a pretty good shot if I wrestle well. ...
Once you get there, anybody at that level, if you have a good day, can turn
it on and end up placing."
Humphrey said he feels that Quigg and Bowen have the best chance at placing
high this weekend. He added that there's less separation between the top and
bottom of their weight classes.
Another wrestler with local ties is Hesperia High School assistant coach and
West Hills College wrestler Shad Manigault (149), who won a CIF State title
at 140 pounds as a senior in 2006 at Northview. Manigault was third at last
weekend's southern regional.
As far as the team competition goes, four teams should be in the running:
northern regional champion Fresno City College, southern regional champ
Santa Ana College, southern regional runner-up Cerritos College and
defending champ Sierra College of Rocklin.
Earlier this season, Sierra College knocked off Santa Ana 23-11 for the
state dual championship.
Each day of the tournament will begin at 10 a.m. with the finals slated to
begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Tickets are $8 per session and $12 for a full-day pass. The single-session
admission for students and seniors is $5.

Freshmen shine as Rams win home finale

While the postseason may have gone by the wayside a few weeks ago, the future looks bright for the Victor Valley College football team.

The Rams put up 568 yards of offense and ran away from Compton College 39-17 to end a three-game American Mountain Conference losing streak on Saturday afternoon in their final home game of the season.

Victor Valley College (3-6, 3-3 AMC) received breakout performances from freshmen receivers Horace Carter and Pelton Smalls. Carter caught seven passes for 120 yards, including a 58-yard third-quarter touchdown strike from freshman quarterback O'Ryan Bradley.

Smalls finished with 99 yards on three catches — including a 70-yard touchdown from freshman quarterback Elisah Filipili on the Rams' first play from scrimmage.

"We've been getting after some of the skill guys who we thought weren't playing at the level they could play at," VVC coach Dave Hoover said. "And God, did they show up. ... This is good for future endeavors."

Bradley came off the bench and threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns on 22 of 36 passing. He also finished with 52 yards and a TD on the ground.

Sophomore running back DeAndre Glasper ran for 91 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts and finished with 49 receiving yards and a score, while sophomore receiver Kiyron Brokenbrough caught six passes for 78 yards.

"Everybody was on the same page this week," Bradley said. "Our whole team came out to play, and we did really good. My offensive line gave me time all game. ... They deserve all the credit."

Bradley, who was benched to begin the game due to missing a practice earlier this week, first made his presence felt when he entered the game as a punter in the first quarter.

With a fourth-and-9 from the Rams' own 35, Bradley took the snap, rolled left, saw some room and charged 26 yards up the field for a first down.
Five plays later, running back Anthony Ambers capped the drive with a 1-yard run up the middle to give VVC a 13-3 lead.

"I roll out and if I have to punt it, I punt it," said Bradley, who replaced the injured Andrew Paredes. "But if I get the ticket to go, if I think I can get the first down, then I run. I mean our coach has given me so much space on that particular play to run it, that they put the game on my shoulders."

Bradley entered the game as a quarterback in the second quarter. On VVC's second possession of the period, he capped a 75-yard drive by recovering a fumbled snap and rolling into the end zone from 4 yards out to put the Rams up 20-10 with 3:55 to play in the half.

The Tartars never got any closer the rest of the game, and the Rams led 33-10 at one point in the third.

Compton 3 7 7 0 — 17
Rams get routed

Head coach Dave Hoover summed it up perfectly following Victor Valley’s 41-19 American Mountain Conference loss to Southwestern College on Saturday:

"We didn’t show up today," Hoover said.

Ryan Nelson completed 23 of 29 passes for 210 yards ( 202 in the first half ) and threw two first-half touchdowns to lead the Jaguars (5-2, 4-0 AMC). Southwestern’s Kenslow Smith ran for 76 yards and three first-half touchdowns, and wide receiver George Bell caught 13 passes for 113 yards and a TD.

VVC (2-5, 2-2 AMC) was outgained 443 yards to 291.

Early mistakes helped Southwestern, ranked 14th in Southern California, jump out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and a 34-0 lead in the third.

On their second possession, the Rams (2-5, 2-2) were trailing 7-0 when punter Van Ryan Espinda couldn’t get the kick away and was tackled at the Southwestern 36. Eight plays later, Smith scampered into the end zone from a yard out.

Rams quarterback Elisah Filipili, who was starting for the injured O’Ryan Bradley, fumbled the snap two plays later and the Jaguars recovered to score five plays later on another Smith run with 26 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Hoover said that Bradley missed the game due to a hip flexor injury, and starting left tackle Beau Humphrey also missed the game.

"We had some critical guys out, and our backups didn’t perform well," Hoover said.

VVC reached the red zone just once in the second quarter, but Filipili slipped and fell on fourth-and-5 at the Jaguar 19.

Victor Valley didn’t score until the third quarter, when Ryan Sampson ran in from 20 yards out. The Rams scored twice more in the fourth quarter, on a 1-yard run by Deandre Glasper (who finished with 98 rushing yards) and on Anthony Ambers’ 38-yard TD run.

Saturday’s loss dimmed the Rams’ playoff hopes, but Hoover feels they can win their final three games.

"We can win every game we play," Hoover said. "Realistically in this league, Southwestern is probably the best team. We can challenge them, but we didn’t. Everybody else is a push."

"Really there is nobody that is a whole lot better or a whole lot worse than anybody else. So yeah, we can win out. We can win out; we can lose out. We’ve just got to get decided on what we’re going to do."
The Victor Valley College volleyball team lost a hard-fought battle with Chaffey College in five sets on Wednesday, 25-19, 26-28, 23-25, 25-20 and 12-15.
Libero Keesha Thomas had 38 digs for the Rams.
"I thought both liberos played great," White said. "We didn’t lose it on defense. We lost it on blocking, controlling the net and hitting."
VVC wins on field goal in overtime
October 4, 2008 - 11:31PM -- By TOMOYA SHIMURA, STAFF WRITER
VICTORVILLE : The Victor Valley College football team’s resiliency proved all’s well that ends well.
The Rams (2-3, 2-0 American Mountain Conference) beat Golden West College 34-31 in overtime as they rallied from a 13-point deficit with 4 minutes left in regulation.
Kelsey Davis made a 22-yard field goal on the first drive of overtime, before Eric Brinkley intercepted a pass for the win.
"W shot ourselves in the foot about 15 times in this game,"VVC head coach Dave Hoover said. "We had such a hard time getting it going."
"We just refused to give up. I’m just so proud of my team. This might be one of the great wins this school’s ever had. ... We played perfect football for 5 minutes."
The Rustlers got a touchdown with 4:23 to go in the fourth quarter to make it 31-18. But the Rams didn’t give up as Mel Carmichael scored on a 1-yard run with 2:29 left, and the VVC defense stopped Golden West’s drive in just 20 seconds to get the ball back.
VVC freshman quarterback O’Ryan Bradley completed two straight passes from the 50-yard line to get to the Golden West 7. Bradley went on to deliver a touchdown pass to Kenyatta Smith with 12 second left, and Davis made VVC’s first extra point to tie the game.
"We made plays finally late in the game, which we needed," said Bradley, who was 15 of 32 for 292 yards and added 45 rushing yards. "It wasn’t necessarily what I did, but it was everybody else around me that made me look good."
VVC outgained Golden West in total offensive yards 568-389.
Deandre Glasper and Carmichael each had two TDs and ran for 113 and 105 yards, respectively, for the Rams.
"We played a ridiculous preseason schedule," Hoover said. "They shouldn’t put us in this situation they put us in. We fought through it, now we are in league and 2-0. I couldn’t be more pleased."
Rams get shut out in home opener

VICTORVILLE : The Victor Valley College football team has shown in its first two games that it can hang with the best of teams. But the Rams haven’t done enough to pick up a win.

On Saturday, they dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 16-0 loss to nationally ranked Palomar College in their home opener on VVC’s lower campus.

The Rams struggled defensively against state-ranked Riverside Community College last week, while the offense played well. On Saturday it was the offense that struggled.

"We’re Jekyll and Hyde," VVC head coach Dave Hoover said. "If the defense played as well last week as we did this week, we would’ve won the Riverside game. If the offense shows up like they did against Riverside, we win this game. The good news is that we can play good people. We can play good people well. We just haven’t put it together yet and that’s my fault."

VVC reached the red zone three times - once inside the 5 - in the first half, and on all three occasions failed to score. Kicker Andrew Paredes - whom Hoover said has been nursing a groin injury all season - missed three field goal attempts. The Rams only managed four first downs in the second half and got within 25 yards of the end zone once on a drive that ended with a fumble on fourth-and-1 at 21.

The Rams’ 298 total yards of offense was way down from 449 a week ago, while the defense held Palomar - ranked No. 8 in Southern California - to 292. Last week the Comets rushed for 303 yards. O’Ryan Bradley threw for 177 yards on 20 of 37 passing, and Kenyatta Smith caught eight passes for 61 yards.

"I think the line did a good job of putting the skill guys in position to succeed," Hoover said. "I just think the skill guys have to step up. I’m very unhappy with my skill guys right now."

Palomar jumped on the scoreboard with just under 8 minutes to play in the first half when kicker Briton Forester made a 36-yard field goal. Matt Christian came in to quarterback Palomar in the second half, and the Comets finally found the end zone on their first drive of the third quarter. Christian capped off a nine-play, 71-yard drive that took just under 4 minutes with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Paul Moore. He completed 3 of 4 passes on the drive and had 44 rushing yards in the second half.

Christian later led Palomar on a 79-yard, 16-play drive that ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by Andrew Frasier, giving the Comets a 16-0 lead with 9:23 to play.

"Defensively (Victor Valley) did a good job," said Palomar head coach Joe Early, whose team is ranked 21st by the J.C. Grid-Wire. "It took us a while to figure out what we were doing. Once we hunkered in, we were able to shut some things down defensively, and offensively we were able to move the ball. Our issue was leaving points on the board. This was a good win on the road, I think against a good Victor Valley football team."

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for VVC as it finishes its nonleague schedule on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College, which is ranked second in southern California.

"These nonleague games are a tremendous challenge for us," Hoover said. "We’re playing the best programs in the state if not the nation."

Palomar College 0 3 7 6 - 16
Victor Valley 0 0 0 0 - 0

Second Quarter
P - Forester 36 FG
Third Quarter
FB lose to RCC

VVC loses opener to RCC 52-31
RIVERSIDE - Last year the biggest problem for the Victor Valley College football team was offense. That doesn't look to be the problem this year.
Freshman quarterback O'Ryan Bradley threw for 236 yards and the Rams amassed 441 yards total offense but fell to host Riverside Community College Saturday at Wheelock Field in the 2008 debut for both teams.
Victor Valley Coach Dave Hoover was not surprised with the numbers since his team looked much the same in last week's scrimmage. While they moved the ball successfully against a quality foe, they gave up 359 yards.
``We didn't play hard enough and we didn't play physical enough,'' Hoover said after addressing his team at midfield. ``It was the first college game for a lot of these guys and I don't think they understood the intensity you have to play it. I hope they know now.''
That doesn't mean the winning side was completely satisfied either. Riverside's Bill Brown wasn't pleased with his defense or his special teams as the Tigers missed four extra points.
``I wasn't happy that we gave up 51 points and we have to work on our special teams,'' he said. ``We have some great athletes and we're going to make some plays. If we can iron out a few things, we should have a chance at winning the conference.''
Victor Valley stuck with RCC early. It spotted the host team a 7-0 lead with Redlands High graduate Coy Glass directing a 62-yard drive on the team's first possession that ended with a 36-yard toss to Travis Carter.
The Rams drew even on their ensuing possession, striking with the big play as Bradley connected with Silverado product Deandre Glasper on a 70-yard pass play with Glasper hauling in the pass at the Tigers 30 and racing the rest of the way.
The Rams took a 10-7 lead on a 39-yard field goal by Andrew Paredes but that lead was short lived as RCC retaliated soon after with a drive of its own, this one ending with an 8-yard toss from Glass to former high school teammate Corey Ham, giving the Tigers back a 13-10 lead.
Victor Valley's second lead of the game came when O.C. Craig returned a punt 36 yards for a touchdown to go up 17-13. But that would be its last advantage. RCC scored twice more before the end of the half, both times on scoring passes by Glass. His 4-yarder to Winston Hutchinson gave the Tigers a 20-17 edge and was the fourth lead change of the half.
A 29-yarder from Glass to Jacob Slouka with 2:45 left in the second quarter made it 27-17 and the Rams were never within single digits again.
O'Bradley spread the ball out to nine different receivers with his favorite target being Glasper, who caught four passes for 74 yards. He also rushed for 47 on 11 tries. The biggest weapon in the ground game was Ryan Sampson who who only had four carries but managed 66yards.
``I am disappointed because I thought it was a winnable game,'' Hoover said. ``And it only gets tougher from here.''
Meanwhile Glass threw for 184 yards, evenly split among seven receivers. He threw five touchdowns without an interception.
The Tigers rushed for 175 yards, 156 of that by Cedric Foster.
Next week the Rams will host Palomar at 1 p.m. while the Tigers will head to the neighboring county to renew their rivalry with San Bernardino Valley College at 6 p.m.
