<itunes:summary>Welcome to the Story Circle Network podcast. You'll hear the many voices of our membership as they explore their lives and world through writing and sharing. We hope that by sharing our stories, we help bring insight to each other's lives. It is by sharing that we become stronger and more in tune with ourselves. We come from all walks of life to beckon our creativity and weave our stories.

Our podcast will include at least one Story Circle Network member reading their story (usually our Story of the Month winner), plus songs, musings, and interviews to help you on your way to fulfillment in your own personal writing.

So sit back, relax, grab a cup of hot tea ... and join us in the circle.</itunes:summary>

Join us in the circle while Judy Whelley talks to SCN members and
workshop leaders Carolyn Blankenship and Leilani Rose about their
upcoming writer's retreat in Red River, New Mexico. We'll catch up on
latest happenings in SCN and take a quick step back in SCN history with
more recipes from the SCN cookbook, Kitchen Table Stories.

We've found that our podcast listeners enjoy the podcast all the
more when they get to hear the voices of their fellow SCN members. But
for them to hear those voices, you've got to call us. Not only do our
listeners appreciate the input and participation, but our podcast team
does too! In July, tell us why reading women's memoir is important to
you. Call our Listener Line at 641-715-3900, ext 19212, or leave a
comment on our blog and you're entered into a drawing for a lovely
writing goody, courtesy of one of our SCN authors.

Happy listening, and keep on writing! We've all got a story to tell.

Join us for the April "Spring Break" episode of the SCN podcast. The daffodils have bloomed, the grass is turning green, and summer is on the way. What's that mean? Spring Break! The SCN podcast is taking a small vacation, too, so we don't have a guest interview this month. But tune in for some quick tips on getting started with a tough project and sprucing up boring writing. Then tune in for our May episode when I talk to SCN member and author Linda Wisniewski about her recently published memoir "Off Kilter."

Please also take a few minutes to complete our listener survey--the link on our podcast web site. As always, if you have any ideas or suggestions for the podcast, please let us know!

Happy listening! Remember, we all have a story to tell.

I'll talk to Paula Yost about the basics of the book reviews site, Susan Albert about how they decide which books to review, and Linda Wisniewski about how you can become a reviewer.

The web site is a huge undertaking and is one of the ways Story Circle Network supports women's literature. If you're looking for ways to become involved with SCN, or to get some writing clips for your portfolio, you won't want to miss this episode!

If you'd like to jump from one interview to the next, here are the approximate times:

Paula Yost begins at 1:42

Susan Albert begins at 16:12

Linda Wisniewski begins at 30:49

Next month we'll have an interview with SCN member and author Linda Wisniewski about the publication of her memoir, Off Kilter: A Woman's Journey to Peace with Scoliosis, Her Mother, & Her Polish Heritage. In the coming months we'll also have guest hosts.

Happy writing! And remember, we all have a story to tell.

Here is the bonus podcast I promised you! So many listeners have told me how much they enjoy the music in the SCN podcast. I choose the music hoping that it might spark your inner muse. Music is such a wonderful prompt for our writing, be it serious, funny, spiritual, or anywhere in between. If you like these songs, consider purchasing the entire album from your favorite performer. I've included links to their Podsafe Music Network pages.

Join me for a recap of 2007 on the SCN podcast. I put together the best of the advice our guests gave us this year on what life writing is, how to get started, how to beat writer's block, and how to get the most out of your SCN writing circle experience.

June 2007

We have a slightly shorter episode this month as we reset our publication schedule. Instead of publishing in the middle of the month, we're going to start posting new episodes at the first of the month. But that doesn't mean this isn't a great episode! I'll fill you in on some upcoming events and opportunities in the Story Circle Network, and Story of the Month author Joyce Boatright reads her story, Circles, Threads, and the Webs We Weave.

Now you can listen to the Story Circle Network podcast over your phone by dialing 831-480-3977. I hope this is helpful for those of you with dial-up connections. But long distance charges apply, so be careful if you pay long distance by the minute!

Question of the month: how did you find Story Circle Network and what impact has that had on you? Give us a call at 641-985-5999, ext 19212. Don't forget! If you answer our question of the month or offer other feedback, you're entered into a drawing for a Story Circle goodie! Just leave a comment on the podcast site or call in to our listener line. We look forward to hearing from you!

May 2007 - Circles

May's episode is all about writing circles: what they are, why they're essential, and how to get the most from them. Joining me to lend her expertise is Sister Mary Sullivan, facilitator of eCircle #8 in the SCN Internet Chapter. Mary has spent almost 50 years leading retreats and facilitating writers.

Our Story of the Month is "Childhood Artifacts" by SCN board member Lisa Shirah-Hiers.

Music from this episode:
Waiting for Something to Happen by Courtney Jones

April 2007

Welcome to April! After being on hiatus for March (to be able to attend the SCN LifeLines retreat in Texas) we have a very full show for you! Join me as I chat with Megan Potter, a life coach who believes that the key to a creative life is living with abundance and authenticity. And sometimes our biggest creative breakthroughs are not necessarily in learning to write, but in learning to live.

We also have two stories of the month from Sister Mary Sullivan and Claudia Ewers. The music is All In One Day by Eileen Meyer.

It's a great episode, so I hope you'll listen!

January 2007 - The new year

Paula Yost, founder of LifeSketches and Heirlooms Memoir Publishing (www.alifesketch.com), and frequent workshop and class instructor, talks to us about her journey to life writing as a profession. Weâll also talk about the importance of mechanics and style in life writing. Erin Declan Philbin, our December story of the month winner, reads her poem, âA Wordy Riff.â?

Question of the month: How has place influenced your personal writing? Did the beautiful mountains or mesas of your home state inspire you to put pen to paper? Or are you living in a âtemporaryâ? home and longing for the true home in your heart? Give us a call at 641-985-5999, ext 19212. All listeners who call in or email feedback are entered into a monthly drawing for a book published by one of our SCN members.

Songs in this episode are:

About the Story Circle Network podcast

Welcome to the Story Circle Network podcast.

Note from the host

Here at the Story Circle Network, we share our stories via e-mail every day. If you're anything like me, this story sharing has become a treasured time of day that I anticipate eagerly. But, as much as I enjoy it, there is just something missing when you read a story on your computer monitor. I crave the personal touch, the human passion, the warmth of a storyteller's voice. So, we thought, what better way to share our stories than by podcast?

Now you have a chance to listen to your fellow circle members tell their story. You'll still have your e-Circle activities to look forward to every month, but you'll also be able to hear stories every month on your computer or portable audio device.

Our podcast will include at least one Story Circle Network member reading their story (usually our Story of the Month winner), plus songs, musings, and interviews to help you on your way to fulfillment in your own personal writing.

So sit back, relax, grab a cup of hot tea ... and join us in the circle.

Podcast team

Becca in Pinehurst, TX

Profession: By day I'm a product marketing manager for a computer software company; by night I'm a Renaissance Woman, always looking for that next tidbit to learn or technology to tackle. I've been a professional communicator for over 10 years, so now I'm focusing on my creative pursuits, like this podcast and my lifewriting.

What is your writing practice?:
Unfortunately it's too easy for me to not have a set writing practice. I tend to write when I can grab a few free minutes, which isn't often enough. I do my best writing when I let myself disconnect from my "normal" schedule and seize the moment when it knocks me over.

Favorite inspirational writing book(s): So far my favorites are Page after Page by Heather Sellers and Storycatchers by Christina Baldwin. But I have so many left to read!

Favorite memoir(s): Hands down it's Dance of the Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd. Dance is what pushed me down my own path to lifewriting. Beyond that I have a huge stack of memoirs on my bookshelves waiting to be read.

Judy in Dayton, OH

Profession: I retired after a thirty three year career in education where I taught
all ages, preschool through doctoral students. After an abrupt end to
that career, I am reinventing my self with what I call Second Life
Creativity. Now, I am a writer. I am committed to living a creative life style, allowing creativity to
permeate my existence. I'm taking more time with my plants and garden,
noticing the beauty of nature and bringing that into my home. I'm
cooking more with herbs and using more locally grown and organic food.
I'm knitting, sewing, learning how to creatively use technology, and
writing, writing, writing!

What is your writing practice?:
I'm learning to live a creative life, beginning by establishing a daily
writing practice. My goal is to write first every day. I've been
researching the writing practices of successful writers and a common,
recurring element is that they write every day, set goals, and dedicate
themselves to their art. I'm presently immersing myself in writing
communities both on line and locally. I'm getting some coaching and
some mentoring and am moving forward into a new career and life.

Favorite inspirational writing book(s): I have a shelf full of writing and creativity books! I'm relying on
Shimmering Images: A Handy Little Guide to Writing Memoir by Lisa Dale
Norton, and Eric Maisel's books on creativity and writing for current
guidance and inspiration.

Favorite memoirs: My favorite memoir, written by a woman, is The Black Swan: Memory,
Midlife and Migration by Anne Batterson. I've read it several times and
the pages are all marked up with notes and underlining, good indicators
for how deeply I interacted with this lovely, lyrical book.

Karen in Austin, TX

Profession: I'm actually career transitioning right now, hoping to get out of computer programming and get into either freelance writing or library work or both.

What is your writing practice?: I don't have a set practice. I do a lot of journaling, about 5 times a week, and try to create various pieces for submission, but nothing too structured. I really just enjoy the benefits of journaling right now and I love moving pen over paper.

Favorite inspirational writing book(s): Anything by Natalie Goldberg

Favorite memoirs: I don't have an overall favorite. My favorite memoir this year is A Midwife's Story by Penny Armstrong and Sheryl Feldman, about a midwife in the Amish country in the 70's. My favorite fiction book right now is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. This book about the immigrant experience really captivated me and I love her style of writing.

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://media.libsyn.com/media/scn/Story_Circle_Network_October_2006.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>
