My favorite new app is Flipp, which is a free app that allows you to see your favorite weekly ads right on your phone (or tablet). You’ll find ads from Kroger, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, Dollar General, Big Lots and more. There are over 400 retailers available. The app is very easy to use to view the ads and it allows you to create a shopping list with just a simple tap of the item in the ad. It is perfect to scan through ads as you are waiting in the pick up line at school (or any other time consuming school activity!). This is perfect for those busy back to school days.

Ingredients:

2 cups cooked chopped (bite-size) turkey
1/2 dried cranberries
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise (less or more to your taste)
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Mix all the dry ingredients together. Add mayonnaise to evenly coat. Add salt and pepper to taste. You can eat this right away, or place covered in the refrigerator for a few hours. Chilling will allow the flavors to mix.

One of the last stops I made before my kids headed back to school was Staples because they everything that my kids need for their desk at school and at home. Blue Velvet Cupcakes Recipe

Red velvet cake is one of my guilty pleasures. My son loves it too, and we always ask for it on our birthdays. So, when I was given a recipe for Blue Velvet Cupcakes, I knew I had to try it. My other children love cupcakes, so it wasn’t a stretch to ask them to help me make cupcakes this summer. Plus, I was just at Target and they had many holiday baking supplies on clearance, so I grabbed some white frosting with blue sprinkles. It may be June – but with kids that are singing the tunes from Disney’s Frozen every day, I had a feeling that Blue Velvet cupcakes with Sparkly Sprinkles would be a hit!

I may try these next time with red frosting to make Spiderman cupcakes and surprise my son – he is such a huge Spidey fan! Whatever theme you decide to go with, I guarantee they will be a hit. These taste amazing!

How to Make Blue Velvet Cupcakes

This recipe from Tracey at Tracey’s Culinary Adventures also has instructions for homemade frosting, which I’m including for you. I’m sure it is delicious, but since I found that sale at Target with the sprinkles, I didn’t try it, but I thought you might.

Blue Velvet Cupcakes

Serves: 16-20

Ingredients

2½ cups cake flour
1½ cups sugar
1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1½ cups vegetable oil
1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
1 tbsp. blue food coloring
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. white vinegar
Frosting
2½ sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
2½ cups confectioners sugar (10 oz)
¼ tsp. salt
1 tbsp. vanilla extract
2 tbsp. heavy cream

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray cupcake tin with non-stick spray or insert cupcake liners.
In a medium bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In large bow, combine eggs, oil, buttermilk, food coloring, vanilla and vinegar. Whisk vigorously until well combined and smooth. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and whisk until smooth, about 1-2 minutes.
Divide the batter evenly in the cupcake tin, filling each hole about ¾ full. Bake 17-19 minutes, or until the tops spring back when lightly pressed with your fingertip and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Transfer pan to wire rack to let cupcakes cool for a few minutes. Remove them from the pans to cool completely.
For the frosting, in a large bowl, beat the mixture with an electric mixer for about 20 seconds. Add the confectioners sugar and salt, beat at medium-low to incorporate the sugar. Increase the speed to medium and beat until fully combined (about 30 seconds). Add the vanilla and heavy cream, beat on medium until combined. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for 4 minutes or until mixture is light and fluffy.

Clean Up:

If you have ever made anything with food coloring – you know that it can be a bit messy! Lucky for this mom, I had Dawn Ultra to help me get everything clean again in less time, so we had more time to enjoy family time.

While the cupcakes were cooking, I wanted to get everything cleaned up. Dawn Ultra has a powerful formula that keeps suds going to clean greasy grimy – and blue stained – dishes. Not only did I get the bowls and utensils cleaning from our baking adventure, I was also able to clean the dishes from breakfast quickly and easily.

I let Dawn do all the hard work by soaking the dishes for about 5 minutes while I cleaned up the counter from our mess. No harsh scrubbing was needed, even on hardened ketchup from the breakfast plates. I had everything cleaned up in time to get our cupcakes out of the oven. Once the cupcakes came out, we let them cool for about 20 minutes, added our frosting and sprinkles, and enjoyed our new baking adventure!

I was really impressed with how fast everything shipped. Once you order a Smile Brilliant custom teeth whitening tray, your order leaves their facility within 24 hours, so you get the kit within 2-3 days. There are very easy step-by-step instructions included so you can make your own impressions (I had never done that before – it was pretty cool to make a mold of my teeth!). Then you return the molds in a pre-paid envelope and they create your custom fit trays.

The trays arrive in a little harrying case so they are easy to carry and keep safe. Once you have your trays, you can start using the Smile Brilliant teeth whitening gel to whiten your teeth. The trays fit so perfectly, too – they are simple to put in and take out when you are whitening. And you can start to see results in as little as 3 treatments.

And what about sensitive teeth?

Smile Brilliant has desensitizing gel, which you apply before the teeth whitening and it really helps it stopping the sensitivity. If this gel wasn’t part of the program, I’m not sure I would have tried it! Looking for some new ideas for Family Fun night? We love to play games in my family so I was excited to check out these new Wii games that will be fun for everyone in the family. We Sing Pop with 2 Microphones includes songs from over 6 decades of pop music with hits from today. Some of the artists featured include: Adele, Jessie J, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Pussycat Dolls, Wham and more. I’m looking forward to a girls’ night in to play this one!

Tips to Recycle in the Bathroom & Repurpose Beauty Products

If you are like my family, you most likely recycle many products. We have a recycle bin in our kitchen – but I honestly haven’t thought about recycling in the bathroom have you?

Well, I’m not alone – According to a report from Johnson & Johnson, 7 out of 10 Americans say they always or almost always recycle, but only 1 in 5 Americans consistently recycle in the bathroom. Many consumers don’t even realize that most products commonly used in the bathroom, such as shampoo, lotion and cleanser bottles, can be recycled. The sad fact is that each year, Americans throw away enough 15-oz. shampoo bottles to fill 1,164 football fields—that’s 18,000 tons of plastic ending up in landfills – YIKES!

To help this issue, Johnson & Johnson has launched CARE TO RECYCLE™, a recycling campaign that encourages people to recycle more items from the bathroom. You can check out the website for some helpful information and tips on what can and can’t be recycled.

Not only can you recycle, but you can also repurpose empty beauty products – and you know I love that because it is also a way to save money! Need some inspiration? Here are some ideas:

Cut off the tops of your old shampoo bottles and use them as pencil & jewelry holders for your everyday needs
Take your shampoo bottles and repurpose them as an eco-friendly flower vase
Recycle your shampoo bottles and use them as an easy, inexpensive way to store make-up brushes
Repurpose your old lotion bottles and turn them into holders for charging your cell phone
Use an old plastic bottle as a way to amplify the volume of your cell phone speakers (perfect for your desk!)
Repurpose an empty plastic bottle and use as a shovel for gardening and tending to plants around the house

Do you ever have those days when you just wish that a healthy meal would magically appear in your refrigerator/freezer so you could whip it up for your family? Between back to school schedules, extracurricular activities, work, my own school schedule, AND just trying to make some quality family time – it is challenging to get dinner on the table (and I know many of you can relate!). So, when I heard about Dream Dinners and was invited to check it out, I KNEW I had to find out more.

About Dream Dinners:

Dream Dinners makes meal planning, shopping, prep-work and clean up simple by moving it to specially equipped stores. Guests preview a new menu each month, pick what dinners they want (in either a 3-serving size or 6-serving size) and then schedule a time to attend a meal assembly session at the nearest Dream Dinners location. You pay ahead online so when you arrive at the location you can just focus on making your meals.

At the meal assembly session, guests rotate through refrigerated recipe stations, following easy recipes to scoop prepped ingredients into baking pans or zip-lock bags and then attaching the cooking directions to the freezer meal. Once done, guests take their uncooked meals home, put them in the freezer, and take them out when they are ready to make them. Dream Dinners recommends taking out 3 meals a week from the freezer and placing them in the refrigerator to be cooked that week.

My Experience:

I loved having all the prep-work done for me – and having an easy recipe to follow to make sure I had everything in my freezer meal. I also really liked the variety of meals to choose from, like Firehouse Three Cheese Pasta with Meatballs, Old Fashioned Meatloaf with Twice Baked Potatoes, Chicken Yakitori Over Jasmine Rice, and Pecan Crusted Pork Chops with Garlic Mashed Potatoes. Don’t those sound great? The meals were so easy to prepare and the best part = NO CLEAN UP. Yep, the staff at Dream Dinners goes around and cleans up after you – they are super friendly and helpful to make sure you have everything you need as well.

I liked how simple the process was and that it also allowed me to custom my own meals to our family’s taste (like not adding mushrooms in a recipe or adding extra garlic on some). Plus, this process helped me get out of the rut of making the same things each week, so my family was excited, too! This is such a perfect service for busy families, new moms, those that enjoy cooking but don’t have a lot of time – and even those that don’t like to cook because they make it so simple for you!
