Flickr has tons of pictures from last night’s New Years celebrations from around the world from millions of people. It is pretty amazing to view those and I spent hours looking through them.

Of course, my recent Canon Rebel T1i (canon dslr deal) purchase has a little to do with my interest in seeing how people are achieving this incredible pictures.

LogMeIn even lets you remote control your desktop from your iPhone with the LogMeIn Ignition iPhone app.

Now, a lesser known free beta offering by LogMeIn is their LogMeIn Express service.

LogMeIn Express is a simple screen sharing web application.

LogMeIn Express enables fast and simple screen sharing and remote control of one computer with others. You get a session code as a host and you can share it with a number of people.

Your guests just need to the Express website and enter the code to view your screen. No software required for the guest! It even includes easy-to-use chat capabilities.

The connections are end-to-end 256-bit SSL encryption. As a host, you can also grant permission for a guest to remote control the session.

LogMeIn Express can be a solid alternative for quick and easy remote sessions than compared to the full fledged screen sharing services such as WebEx or GotoMeeting.

The host machine has to be Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2003 or Server 2008 (including 64-bit). And the viewer machine needs to have Flask 9 or 10 installed.

Dropbox is a multi-OS, file sync freeware that you can use to sync files between various computers you have. You can also get to your files and folders from anywhere as long  as you have an Internet connection.

Here is another one – you can upload files to Dropbox by email.

MailDrop is an application that lets you send files to your Dropbox account by email. This can come in really useful if you were in a situation where you can’t get to your Dropbox account or need to upload file from a mobile device where file handling aren’t that friendly (unless your have iPhone Dropbox).

How does MailDrop work?

MailDrop is a portable application for Windows that runs in the background in your computer. It periodically checks your email address via IMAP. If it finds an email with a ‘Dropbox’ label (or folder if you are not on Gmail), it searches for attachments and downloads to your local Dropbox folder.

How to setup MailDrop?

• Enable IMAP in your email if you already don’t have it
• Create a ‘Dropbox’ label/folder (any attachment in an email labeled ‘Dropbox’ will be downloaded)
• Download MailDrop (no installation) – run MailDrop.exe
• Enter your email/password (used only locally in your computer to download attachments)
• Browse to your Dropbox location
• In the Advanced tab, setup your IMAP settings
• Choose the Mail folder if you have setup and the time interval

MailDrop uses a local Internet connection to your email account to download attachments from mails labeled Dropbox.

If you are wary about providing your primary account, you could do this instead. Setup another email address. In your current Gmail account, setup a filter to automatically forward any email labeled ‘Dropbox’ to the new email you setup. Now, use that email to download to MailDrop.

This Week in Photography

A good photography pocast by Alex Lindsay and Frederick Van Johnson discuss news, tips and camera techniques. If you are a beginner like me, this will give you insights into the minds of the professionals and the photo speak. A good podcast overall that I enjoy listening to.

Digital Photography Tips from the Top Floor

A non-nonsense short and sweet podcast with photography tips ranging from the most basic composition techniques to the advanced post processing. Don’t miss listening to the archives as they contain many many good shows with a boatload of good information. Some are video podcasts too.

Learning Digital Photography

Jason anderson also blogs as the ‘Canon Blogger’ and is the host of this excellent podcast. Jason pretty much shares everything he learns and he is very easy to follow. I highly recommend listening to his podcasts if you are starting out with a semi-pro or even a pro camera. You don’t have to shoot Canon to like his podcasts.

Martin Bailey Photography

Martin Bailey has an excellent show where he shares information on how he makes his photos explaining the process, tips and techniques he uses. You can pick up a lot of good information from his shows. He also has a great community in his website where he has a monthly assignment. You can also take part in this assignment and if your picture gets the most votes from the community, you could go on to winning some cool prizes.

7 Photography Questions

Audri Lanford ran this excellent podcast where she interviews world class photographers and gets answers, tips for 7 photography related questions in their special area. You get answers from wildlife photographers, landscape photographers, wedding photographers, etc. Sadly, this series has been discontinued but there is a wealth of information in the 54 podcasts in the archive and will keep you occupied for many many hours.

iTunes has a great collection of photography podcasts and I am still discovering some new good ones every few weeks. If you listen to a good one, please share it in the comments.

We use a lot of cloud services, social networking websites, share pictures, save interesting links online and they are all scattered everywhere in the Internet.

It is not that common for popular online services to vanish and disappear. But there is always a chance your account is lost or suspended or something unfortunate happens that you can’t get to your account anymore! Here is a case in point where Amit lost his Gmail account for a while.

With most of my secure online data in my Gmail account and other services, I have my doubts storing that data in someone else’s servers. Here are a few things Backupify does to address those concerns

• They store all the data in Amazon cloud with good security and data duplication policies
• For most services, they don’t store our usename/password but use a token where we authenticate the service one time. But for services that don’t have this like iPhone or Hotmail, they do store your username/password using advanced encryption (no details?).
• Their privacy policy states that they don’t look at our data once it is backed up, sell it, analyze it and that they don’t own our data. Unlike Google, they are not trying to analyze the data to sell us ads based on our data but instead they charge for their service.

Backupify service looks well thought out and designed with security in mind. But, I am still a little wary of backing up my main Gmail account to it (it’s temporarily disabled due to high volume) but have no problem configuring my other online accounts.

It’s the same logic how I store all my non-critical passwords in the excellent online password manager Passpack.

I highly recommend you try out Backupify and make use of this incredible free lifetime offer before January 31.

In fact, I am considering adding it to the free apps I am thankful for this season!

Dropbox puts your files in the cloud securely and keeps as many computers as you want in sync, now that includes your iPhone.

Dropbox just introduced another killer feature – LAN Sync.

In the past versions, if you had 5 computers in your house Dropbox would sync to them fast. But, it will upload changes from 1 computer to the cloud (Dropbox servers in the Internet) and then download those files to your other 4 computers.

Dropbox v0.7+ now are intelligent enough with LAN Sync feature, they will first look in the local area network for the new file and download it from your own network instead of the cloud. Bypassing the download need from Dropbox servers makes syncing significantly faster.

Here are some points for advanced users to keep in mind with LAN Sync

• • Dropbox needs to maintain a connection to the Internet in order to determine when to sync. To take advantage of LAN sync, all computers need to be connected to a LAN and the Internet at the same time.
  • If you are installing the Dropbox desktop application for the first time, Windows firewall might ask you for permission to allow Dropbox access to the internet and/or your LAN. Press Access to allow Dropbox to sync properly
  • If Dropbox detects a firewall preventing access to your LAN, it will turn off LAN sync in your Dropbox preferences automatically. To turn it back on, change your Firewall settings to allow Dropbox access to the Internet and your LAN, then manually turn on LAN sync in your Dropbox preferences
  • LAN sync only works with computers that share your broadcast mask. For example, usually all computers connected to a single router share a broadcast mask. If your LAN uses multiple network devices to extend its network, you may want to adjust its settings to broaden your broadcast mask between devices. If this sounds foreign to you, you may want to consult your network device’s documentation or a network administrator for help.

If you use Dropbox in multiple computers in your home network or work LAN, make sure you get the new Dropbox build.

With a couple of different options with DNS Servers now between your ISP’s default DNS server, the time tested OpenDNS project and the new Google Public DNS server, you might be wondering which one of these should you be using.

Namebench is a free tool that’s here to answer just that question for you.

It runs a bunch of tests and finds the fastest DNS server available for you. It runs a pretty exhaustive bechmarking by using your web browser history, tcpdump output or even standardized datasets to give a personalized recommendation.

Namebench is a free download and works on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X. It sports both a GUI (graphical user interface) and a command line interface.

CamStudio is a free and open source screencasting tool. CamStudio can record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create an AVI video files.

Also, it comes with a built-in SWF producer that can convert the AVI files into bandwidth friendly SWF flash files.

CamStudio lets you add high-quality, anti-aliased screen captions to your recordings very easily. It even has a video annotation feature where you can personalize your videos by including a webcam movie of yourself ‘picture-in-picture’ over your screencast area.

CamStudio can record your entire desktop or just a region you specify. You can also choose custom cursors and control the size of the video by choosing the quality of the video. CamStudio even comes with its own Lossless codec which means it provides a very high quality video with smaller file sizes.

Plus, the interface (though not all that attractive) is simple and easy to learn in a few minutes.

TechSmith’s Camtasia Studio is definitely a wonderful product but the cost may not be justified for casual screencasting needs. A while back I had downloaded a free version of Camtasia but was looking for something newer.

CamStudio is definitely a great alternative for those looking for a free screencasting tool.

Google has made automatically sending your RSS feeds to Twitter integrated inside your Feedburner account.

To get started

• Login to your Feedburner account
• Go to Publicize tab
• Click on Socialize link in the list
• Add your Twitter account
• Choose different options. My choices
  - Title only
  - Include link
  - Leave room for Retweets
  - Additional text – New: to the beginning
  - Item limit – 1 (I don’t want to flood my Twitter account with auto tweets)
• Activate this

Once you set this, you can see a preview of how your most recent posts will look in the Twitter updates and tweak accordingly. Also, look into filtering your Twitter publishing by keywords or to posts in certain categories. You can also add hashtags based on your post categories.

Google is going to shorten your links with the Google URL shortening service – goo.gl. With Feedburner’s recent support for PubSubHub, the feed publishing could be instant.

I have decided to turn off Feedburner redirect url so people can easily link to my posts right from their Feed readers. This makes your URLs user friendly for your readers. Downside – you lose the ability to track how these links are clicked in Google Analytics. I am ok with that but see what is important to you.

Also, if you were running your blog on WordPress and used Twitterfeed to publish your RSS feeds to Twitter, this could be a great alternative from Google.

I use Gmail and Remember the Milk extensively everyday. So, naturally Remember the Milk for Gmail Firefox extension has been such a wonderful tool for me.

I can access RTM from within Gmail. This is pretty huge as I live in Gmail and it makes it so easy to add and manage my tasks.

Google Chrome has slowly been gaining my trust because it is so fast to load. Plus, each tab runs as a separate process so even if a web app crashes it doesn’t close the whole browser.

Remember the Milk has come out with an add-on for Google Chrome.

With the Google Chrome RTM for Gmail add-on, you can manage your tasks from within Gmail. You can complete, postpone and edit tasks. You can add tasks and connect them with your emails, contacts and even Google Calendar events.

This is huge as I use both RTM and Google Calendar. You can automatically add tasks for starred messages or specific labels in Gmail!

All you need is a free Remember the Milk account and make sure your Gmail language is set to US English.

Google Chrome supports extensions only in their recent beta version. Just follow the notice you will get when you try to install the RTM add-on if you are using an older Google Chrome.

If you are in market for an entry level DSLR and considering a Canon T1i for yourself or your loved one for Christmas, I hope to share some thoughts that might help you make an informed decision.

First Impressions

After a few weeks of using it, here are my first (amateur) impressions. To set expectations right, I am no professional photographer and I am more a photography enthusiast or even a wannabe photographer.

I can enjoy and appreciate a nice picture and hope one day to present the beauty I see in things through ever lasting, compelling pictures.

Enter my first new DSLR – Canon Rebel T1i.

I won’t go too much into it’s features but here is a 30,000 ft overview – 15.1 MP CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 processor (found in higher end Canons), Full HD video, HDMI output, 3.0 inch Clear View LCD with Live View funtion, SD card.

I come from a Canon point & shoot family where I have had an A70, a SD450 and then a bridge camera – Canon Powershot SX10 IS. It is with the Canon SX10 IS, I started venturing beyond the traditional Auto & Scene settings. I started learning about the science of photography a little.

It finally dawned on me how simple the science behind is that drives the whole camera. The lens has an opening and you can control how big or small that is. The bigger you open it more light comes in and vice versa. And then there is the shutter. If you open and close the shutter fast, there is only so much light that enters. If you close it slower, you allow more light.

The manual controls and the creative mode allows you to control different aspects of these basic criteria for various situations and let you open up your creativity.

Canon T1i has easy to access menu and has beginner friendly Creative Auto mode. This mode helps you to say things like I want the background blurry for this portrait or I want to stop this fast action in motion, etc.

In fact, it is ranked No. 1 in the best selling top 10 DSLRs.

Yes, you are gonna have to get used to carrying a bigger camera around. Especially if you have been spoiled by carrying a tiny SD series Canon. But, just start taking it with you everywhere and a bag like LowePro Slingshot 100 will help a lot with that. Soon, people will be used to seeing you with the bag and camera and stop making those snarky remarks.

I am educating myself in photography by listening to podcasts, readinbg books and mainly by taking a lot of pictures.

GV Mobile iPhone app makes it easy to use it from your iPhone. But, i just came across a cool tool that puts Google Voice in your desktop taskbar.

GVNotifier.NET is a free Windows desktop client that neatly tucks away in your taskbar. You just click on the GVNotifier icon to pull up a windows wherever you need it.

GVNotifier comes up with a list of contacts from your recent contacts. Click on a contact to bring up a small screen with an option to call or send SMS. You can also right click on the icon to directly enter a phone number.

When you receieve a SMS, it just pops up a little window where you can read the SMS as well as send a reply right away.

The app is very easy to use and is simplistic. Don’t mistake it for a full blown Google Voice client. It is not. It is a Google Voice Notifier app that makes it easy to interact with Google Voice. Think Gmail Notifier for Google Voice.

For the the tech savvy, you might have a FTP server running and will give that info to someone who speaks FTP and download it.

Sometimes, you may not know how or just won’t have the time to deal with the technicalities like making your Firewall let FTP traffic through, etc.

WeTransfer (beta) is a simple and free file transfer service that lets you send you files upto 2GB in size. You don’t even need to sign up for an account.

You see one little form. Pick the file you want to send. Enter your email and that of the recipients. Type a message and hit transfer.

WeTransfer will hold the file for 2 weeks and sends an email to your recipient with a link to download.

There are plenty of sites to send large files across but WeTransfer.com is a cool and easy name to remember.
