"This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending (for the first time) the 30th Simmons School of Management Womens Leadership Conference in Boston at the beautiful Seaport World Trade Center.

It was a beautiful day in Boston, and driving in to the conference, I didnt know what to expect. These things can either go very well, or well not.

From the beginning of the conference, when Joyce Kolligian kicked things off with her opening remarks, I got the feeling that I was in for a treat."

By Roberta Martone Pavia, Contributing Writer

(May 5, 2009) -- Contrary to popular economic sentiment, the "Bear" market has never been better, at least for Maxine Clark - founder, chair and chief executive officer of Build-a-Bear Workshop, Inc. - and opening keynote speaker at this year's SOM Leadership Conference. In fact, Clark is one of the happy few enjoying a rather bullish market these days in the somewhat sluggish world of retail.

By Roberta Martone Pavia, Contributing Writer

As one of the first two black students desegregating the University of Georgia, Hunter-Gault recalled that as she walked through mobs screaming racist comments she recited portions of Psalm 23:4: "Yea, Thou I walk through the valley of death I fear no evil" and internalized the strong message of support. "I walked in wearing my suit of armor."

Simmons School of Management Survey Findings Featured in CNN Article

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Even in an era in which gender equality within business corporations is an officially-acknowledged -- if by no means fully realized -- idea, it seems there are some supposed distinctions between the sexes which are still ok to make. One business school, however, begs to differ. New research by the Simmons School of Management, based in Boston, Massachusetts, contends that not only do female managers take more risks than believed, but that they should also more actively seek out credit for their boldness.
Women Business Leaders are Risk-Takers: Survey Debunks Gender Myth

BOSTON (April 28, 2009) - Contrary to popular belief, women business leaders don't shy from taking risks, but partake in opportunities considered to be "high-risk" on a regular basis, according to a survey by the Simmons School of Management in Boston. Existing empirical research on gender and risk suggest women are risk-averse, particularly assessments that measure risk through financial resource allocation, and health and safety precautions. But a survey of more than 650 women managers polled during the 2008 Simmons School of Management national leadership conference in Boston revealed that businesswomen are highly likely to take risks related to business or professional opportunities.
