Over 100 students turned out for the event, filling up both classes that were offered. Students began the workshop by finding out there current reading speed. The average college student reads 150-250 words per minute (wpm).

Students attending the workshop learned basic speed reading techniques and took part in drills specifically designed to improve reading speed. By the end of the workshop, most students had made an improvement in their reading speed.

The Iris Organization helps college students learn speed reading skills to help them save time and get better grades. Iris has taught speed reading courses and classes at various universities throughout the U.S. in cities that include: Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Columbus, and Philadelphia.

Speed reading is a useful tool to help students and professionals keep up their reading, allowing them to save time and be more productive. Speed reading techniques were popularly introduced in the United States by Evelyn Wood, who is famous for teaching John F. When she passed away in 1995 at the age of 86 many of the speed reading classes disappeared from most college campuses.

“We’d like to pick up where Evelyn Wood left off,” said Paul Nowak an instructor and class coordinator with the Iris Organization. “We’ve refined the foundational speed reading skills to take into account things like computer-based reading, through a new technology called Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP).”

Chicago, IL - September, 29 2008 - The Iris Organization will be teaching speed reading techniques at the Chicago Public Library on October 4 and 8 to help students, parents and professionals read faster.

Anyone interested in attending the speed reading classes can register online at www.irisreading.com/cpl. Class space is limited and students should register ahead of time to guarantee a place in the class.

The free speed reading classes will teach basic tips and technqiques to increase reading speed and comprehension. Speed reading skills can be very useful in school and at work to increase productivity and efficiency.

Speed reading was first popularized in the 1960’s by Evelyn Wood, who became famous for teaching speed reading techniques to John F. Kennedy. Until the 1990’s her classes could be found on many college campuses through the United States. She passed away in 1995 at the age of 86.

“We want to pick up after the great legacy Evelyn Wood left,” said Paul Nowak, an instructor and class coordinator with the Iris Organization. “We’ve refined the original speed reading techniques to make them more applicable to today’s college student. In addition to reading their textbooks faster, we teach students to read faster on the computer screen using a newly developed technology called Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP).”

Students interested in learning more can watch free speed reading videos, otherwise known as online webinars, by visiting the Iris Organization’s website at www.irisreading.com/speedreadingwebinars.
As semesters progress, many students find themselves struggling to keep up with their reading. “We just want to help students stay on top of their reading,” said Paul Nowak, an instructor for Iris who taught Sunday’s class. “Many of the students in attendance today made improvements in their reading speed.”

A reading test was provided at the beginning and at the end of the course. Students took part in drills and exercises specifically geared towards helping them read faster.
