Join Jason and Nic as they dig into ‘Death of God’ theology.

For some, it is positing the literal death of God as a necessary step of development for Creation.

For others, it’s that the challenges of the world as presented no longer align to the morality of God as developed thousands of years ago, and this older idea needs to ‘die’ to be able to move past it.

Along the way, we explain what this can mean as Gnostics. You can see the ‘God’ these theologies describe as entities of limitation: the Demiurge and the Archons. In pursuit of Gnosis, we make contact with the Wisdom, the source that transcends any single definition of ‘God.’ And it fills the space left by the type of God that dies in this theology.

Scott has spent time on Talk Gnosis before, often talking about the intersection of horror and Gnosticism, either individually or on a panel. Scott gained this expertise as a prolific writer and publisher of horror fiction, and through his own explorations into Gnosticism and esotericism.

And now he’s here to talk about the work he’s made where all of those things meet, DRILL. From the blurb on the book: Magical mailman kills God in this novel of cosmic horror/occult ritual.

Mixing auto-fiction, cosmic horror, and personal quest, this book is a powerful experience. (It’s also very well written!) It takes you through Scott’s experiences with the Jehovah’s Witness, and the deeply human reason he would want to exorcise JHVH1.

As Gnostics, we can find many resonances: what it is to grapple with forces that seek to limit you… and speculations of what may lay beyond those forces.

Jason Mehmel and Nic Lacetti explore the similarities between the mythology and metaphysics Gnosticism and the Elder Scrolls series of games. (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, among others!)

Continually developed, and blossoming within the game Morrowind, the Elder Scrolls suggest a metaphysics very different from a lot of other fantasy, consisting of divine beings that explore the nature of stasis and change, as well as creator figures that are either benevolent or malevolent, depending on your perspective. Not to mention, some of those divine beings seem to know they’re in a video game, and some of the mythology reflects the ‘reality’ of a video game experience.

Both the characters in the world and the real-life fans continuously debate and theorize about the nature of these mysteries. They generally assume there there is no ‘final’ answer to be gleaned; the debate is the point.

Nic and Jason reflect on that as connected to Gnostic communities and reflect on the value of discussion within the community!

Jason Mehmel and Bee Scolnick talk about that provocative movie phenomenon, Barbie.

Already a hilarious and biting satire around gender expectations, the movie unquestionably walks right into the forest of symbols and starts building a cabin.

Greta Gerwig was known to have a kind of ‘Apostles Creed’ styled poem they read together during filming, and has associated parts of the film with the story of the Garden of Eden!

We both heartily enjoyed the movie, and also couldn’t help but find numerous gnostic, esoteric, and mystical associations the whole way through! This episode was so much fun to record; we hope you enjoy it too!

We speak to Montreal based visual artist Alex Coma about his esoterically inspired “spiritual landscapes” as well as the links between art and the mystic. PLUS, we show off a few of his works in the vid and discuss them. Alex constructs surreal, dreamy scenes, which are filled with symbols and metaphors, which attempt to describe the world he lives in. Mixing ancient occult teachings and influenced by many antique painters and philosophers, he creates meaningful artworks, which end up speaking for themselves.

In his book, The Inner Church is the Hope of the World: Western Esotericism as a Theology of Liberation, our guest Nicholas Laccetti examines the esoteric tradition in the light of liberation theology, which has a decidedly leftist/Marxist bent. He joined us for a discussion of the current state of esotericism and its association with certain factions of the alt right. 

We also discussed whether the perceived elitism of esotericism is compatible with social justice movements which typically support the idea of egalitarianism. Naturally, we had to ask about the archons (Gnostics can’t talk politics without ‘em) and the idea of a social qabala.

Regardless of your political persuasion, we hope that this show provokes thought and, possibly, action as you contemplate how a practice of inner development intersects with human history and social action.
