On the evening of Decem­ber 12 the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives passed Sen­ate Bill 1350 by a vote of 66 – 43. This bill, which was intro­duced by Sen­a­tors Casper­son, Meekhof and Booher, allows hunt­ing to be used as a man­age­ment tool to con­trol the wolf pop­u­la­tion in Michi­gan by declar­ing the wolf as a game species. Cur­rently it is esti­mated that there are over 700 wolves in Michi­gan which is up from 500 in 2008. The wolf was removed from the endan­gered species list in 2011. Con­tinue read­ing →

With the Reg­u­lar Firearm deer sea­son wrap­ping up on Novem­ber 30 many hunters will be turn­ing their atten­tion to the Muz­zle­load­ing sea­son in Decem­ber. There are over 1.1 mil­lion res­i­dents in Michi­gan that seek food assis­tance and you are encour­aged to keep this in mind this hunt­ing sea­son. Con­sider mak­ing a dona­tion to the Michi­gan Sports­men Against Hunger group, this can be done by mak­ing a dona­tion when you pur­chase your license. These dona­tion go toward help­ing proces­sors that par­tic­i­pate in this pro­gram. The Michi­gan DNR reminds us that the “Sharp-tailed grouse hunt­ing opens Oct 10th in the Upper Penin­sula. The sea­son lasts until Oct. 31. The first ring-necked pheas­ant sea­son will also open for Zone 1 (par­tial) in the U.P and lasts until Oct. 31. The next oppor­tu­nity to hunt pheas­ant occurs on Oct. 20 for Zones 2 and 3 and lasts until Nov. 14. Don’t for­get there’s also a par­tial Zone 3 hunt from Dec. 1 – Jan 1. The sea­son runs from Sep­tem­ber 1 through the 10th in Huron, Sag­i­naw and Tus­cola coun­ties; and Sep­tem­ber 1–15 and the rest of the lower penin­sula. Accord­ing to the reg­u­la­tions that were approved by the nat­ural resource com­mis­sion Michi­gan goose hunters will be able to enjoy a longer sea­son and duck hunters will be able to take up to four scaup daily.

Michigan Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Plan

The Michi­gan DNR has updated the 2002 Michi­gan sur­veil­lance and response plan for chronic wast­ing dis­ease (CWD). Case stud­ies and pub­lished research have become avail­able in the past decade since the plan was put in place which described CWD dynam­ics and man­age­ment. Recently the new 2012 CWD plan was approved by the Michi­gan depart­ment of agri­cul­ture, the Michi­gan DNR and rural devel­op­ment direc­tors.

Appli­ca­tions for reserved water­fowl hunts on man­aged water­fowl hunt­ing areas are on sale now through Tues­day, Aug. 28, the Depart­ment of Nat­ural Resources reminds hunters. Hunters can apply for reserved morn­ing and after­noon hunts dur­ing the open­ing week­end of the water­fowl hunt­ing sea­son at Fish Point, Harsens Island, Nayan­quing Point and Shi­awassee River State Game Area.
