The 2nd annual Textpattern Template Competition, Textplates ‘07, is finally here. The competition is back with a brand new website and some amazing prizes ($11,000 worth) that are sure to make it even better than last year’s.

To recap, last year saw over 40 submissions with 100,000 downloads and counting, and over a million hits. Since then, the Textpattern community has grown even more and I’m hoping we can top all those numbers this year.

Our fantastic sponsors have provided some truly exciting prizes. SiteGround again stepped up as the featured sponsors, tossing a new 1.66GHz Mac Mini into the pool. Also, Foing is providing a slew of hosting packages for the first 50 submitters and an awesome “Lifetime” account to the winner. Check the prizes page for more information.

The competition will run from today Wednesday, May 16th to June 27th, giving you slackers six weeks to get something in. During this period, I will be posting some tutorials and “How-to’s” to guide those of you who are still unfamiliar with Textpattern or its templating system. Grab the feed to stay up-to-date on all the competition happenings.

I will also announce more details regarding the judges (there are some great volunteers) and rubric in the coming days.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me or post in the forum.

Good luck to everyone.

Garrett already has a great article about previewing your posts in Textpattern by creating a private section. However, by creating one more page template (or adding some conditional statements), you can create a specialized admin section with just the stats and information you need.

My template for this website is set up pretty cleanly so I was able to quickly set up a new page template and modify a few forms to get the features I wanted.

Adding these features and other modifications will be a lot simpler if you build your templates to use “misc” type forms as includes. An example template for a “Preview” section can be found below.

<txp:output_form form="Temp_header" />

<txp:link_to_home>
<txp:sitename /></txp:link_to_home>

              <txp:article_custom form="preview"
section="preview" />
              <txp:output_form form="Temp_sidebar
_preview" />
              <txp:output_form form="Temp_footer" />

Another useful addition I made to my preview section (other than having a customized sidebar with important information) is a “Bookmarks” area. Using the “Links” content section, you can add and output site-related bookmarks that will only be seen in your preview section.

By adding the following code to your customized sidebar and modifying your existing link output tag (if you’re using it) to exclude your special category, you can have your own admin bookmarks.

<txp:linklist form="bookmarks" category="bookmarks"
limit="10" wraptag="ul" break="li" label="Bookmarks"
labeltag="h4" />

I’ve set up an example section if you want to see what’s possible.

How To: Templating with Textpattern

Templating in Textpattern is almost painfully easy, so this tutorial is for all of you who used “I don’t know how” as an excuse:

Go about making your layout as you usually do whether you code it from the ground up or have another approach. It is important to accommodate all aspects of the layout so that certain items such as comments and blogrolls are a part of the design and not an afterthought.

Once you have completed your design, connecting it to the CMS is a cinch. Let us take a look at some areas of a typical template that might need to be integrated.

The Header

My Template

The typical template header would need to be a little more like this to attach it to the CMS:

<txp:page_title />

<link rel="stylesheet" href="<txp:css />" type="text/css" media="screen" />
<link rel="alternate" href="<txp:feed_link flavor="rss" />" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS 2.0"/>
<link rel="alternate" href="<txp:feed_link label="XML" flavor="atom" />" type="application/atom+xml" title="Atom 0.3" />

The Page Title

My Template

Would become:

<txp:link_to_home><txp:sitename /></txp:link_to_home>

The Posts

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

Posted Jan 4th to the "Sample" Category ~ Leave a Comment

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit.

The posts would require two changes to work properly. First, we would replace their location in the page template with an article output tag like this:

	<txp:article />

Then, we would modify the “default” article form to match our template:

<txp:permlink><txp:title /></txp:permlink>

Posted <txp:posted /> to the "<txp:category1 link="y" />" Category ~ <txp:comments_invite />

<txp:body />

The Sidebar

The tags for basic blog functions such as a recent articles list or search form can all be found inside the administration panel. For example:

Recent Articles

Sample

Sample

Sample

Sample

Search

Would become:

	<txp:recent_articles break="li" label="Recent Articles" labeltag="h3" limit="5" wraptag="ul" />

Search

	<txp:search_input label="Search" button="Search" size="15" />

Presto, you now have a finished Textpattern template, now submit it already!
