Rabbit Year

The Dark Corner continues its October shows by talking about Among Us. Specifically, we cover All Elite Wrestling as they stream the game over Twitch. First, we talk about our 24th anniversary. We review a handful of horror movies. Also, Brandi plays the director’s cut for Death Stranding. We play a promo and a dark track. Finally, we shout out some friends and hint at the next episode.

News and Reviews

First, we celebrate our 24th anniversary. Mainly, this comes to buying a tankless water heater. Besides the pressures of home ownership, we eat lunch. That is, we get curbside from Applebee’s.

We start Saturday movie nights with Fear Street 1994. While we enjoyed the few times it subverted expectations, ultimately we found it too derivative to continue the series. Also, we rewatch Annihilation. This blend of sci-fi and horror tells a fascinating story of grief and how it changes us. Meanwhile, it presents the most alien of alien invasions.

We watch Malignant. We find it wild but entertaining. However, it does present a few problems regarding the origins of the monster. Finally, we watch Muppets Haunted Mansion. We find it pleasingly blends elements of the ride with the original Muppet Show for a delightful experience.

Additionally, Brandi plays the director’s cut for Death Stranding. She finds the updates useful, the graphics improved, and the added scenes enjoyable. Also, the haptic controller provides for easier gameplay, making it easier to play for longer.

The Dark Track

For the Dark Track, we go way back to 2010. That is, we feature Kill Everybody by Skrillex from the Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites EP [Explicit]. Skrillex put aside the metal guitar to help pioneer the dubstep scene.

Jelle’s Marble Runs

In the point, we celebrate Jelle’s Marble Runs, a unique alternative to competitive sport. On this YouTube Channel, witness marbles racing against one another on various tracks. Also, see marbles compete in tests of speed, balance, and endurance in the Marble League. Whatever the event, Greg Woods provides commentary in a professional and convincing manner. Indeed, world building provides elements from crowd noise to medical staff to volunteers in the stands.

However, we must thank Jelle Bakker for creating the event. Living with a form of autism, Jelle has developed a personal hobby of playing with marbles into a world wide event. Additional thanks must go to John Oliver for his segment on Last Week Tonight for promoting the channel during quarantine.

That is, these events provide the viewer a guilt free manner in which to enjoy sport. As no humans compete, there is no concern for transmitting the disease. WGD started when BBC Radio 6th on the 22nd of May chose to play gothic rock music. That is, they played a genre for each day. However, May 22nd showcased gothic rock. Consequently, goths in the United Kingdom caught on and made an event of it. For instance, DJ Martin OldGoth and DJ Cruel Britannia (now Batboy Slim) organized goths in the area.

What is Goth?

Originally, goths were a couple of barbarian tribes in Germany. However, thee crudeness of their culture was applied to the description of gothic architecture. The spires and buttresses appeared crude to the classical eye. However, those gothic cathedrals later inspired the gothic literature of the Romantic period. Also, these novels later became films. Gothic rock embraced the themes of these films and novels. Therefore, goth refers to all that is dark, dreary, or desolate.

Also, music not in the public domain plays throughout. Additionally, no beloved landmark falls under threat of a big city investor. Moreover, The film suggests no dead parents or spouses. On top of that, not one cookie gets baked. However, they do come from Florida. First, though, Brandi reads a transcript of a bot forced to watch a number of similar Christmas films. However, The Holiday Calendar adheres to a few tropes. For instance, the calendar produces supposed Christmas magic. Moreover, our leading lady gets advice from a wise elder. Also, several instances of slapstick abound. Additionally, we see a Santa Clause, adorable children dance, and the romantic leads have a falling out.

Reaction

Primarily, Brandi enjoys The Holiday Calendar for its cast. Mostly, this has to do with Star Trek Discovery’s Ethan Peck. However, she points out several characters and scenes unnecessary to the story. For instance, she finds the comic relief, Fernando, to act as though in an entirely different movie. Also, she notices how the movie forces any conflict. Meanwhile, Dave sees no spark between the lead actors. Also, the sheer amount of Christmas spirit overwhelms him by about halfway through. For instance, he groans at the sight of a candy cane.

Meanwhile, we pick up on some aspects of the film for the first time.

Dave forms a new agreement with a publicist to bring you this episodes Dark Track. That is, B.F.G. formed as a post-punk band in Manchester during the summer of 1985. Of the ten tracks offered, Dave chose Anonymous. It appears on the 1989 album, Blue.

Dave has a massive hard drive failure. For example, a new hard drive failed to mount. Also, an old hard drive converted files so they can no longer be accessed. Therefore, Dave shares his grief and frustration. however, there is hope as some files were stores on an even older hard drive. Meanwhile, many music downloads remained on the hard disk for the laptop.

Reviews

We review The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. For instance, we discuss the new theater in Centerville. Brandi shares how she knows one of the cast. Overall, is well acted and the song and dance numbers entertain. Meanwhile, the show has both funny and sad moments. Additionally, it features some audience participation.

In television, we wish GLOW had a little more wrestling. However, we enjoyed the social commentary and the character subplots. Also, we found Wu Assassins fun and exciting with amazing fight scenes. Brandi’s List

Brandi includes albums that reward multiple listens. Mainly, she lists metal bands such as Ayreon, Within Temptation and HIM. For instance, Capricorns exhibit self control, yet they suffer from stress. Moreover, Dave shows how Saturn influences those born under this sign. Saturn represents the father. Avengers Endgame

We review Avengers Endgame in this podcast. First, we recount our experience at the cinema. That is, the theater cancels our first screening because of technical problems. Therefore, we use passes to go to a 10:50 showing. Why so late of a showing? Well, we emceed and performed a couple of improv shows that night. Also, Brandi laments a less enthusiastic crowd. Furthermore, we give up our luxury seating. All the while, Brandi struggles with a cold virus. Meanwhile, Dave gets distracted by deliveries and suburban neighborhood noises.

Endgame Review

In our review, we attempt to discuss Avengers Endgame by first talking about the characters. We look at the central six. For instance, we explore the dual arcs of Iron Man and Captain America. Also, we follow the parallels of Hawkeye and Black Widow. Finally, we see what happens with Thor and The Hulk. Additionally, we touch upon how other characters move the story.

We also touch upon themes, whether themes of guilt and despair or themes of hope and aspiration. Moreover, we answer some criticisms. That is, we look at how Captain Marvel is used. Also, Dave explains why the appearance of Ant-Man is not as absurd as it seems.

Eddie has performed stand-up comedy in many countries across the globe. His brand of absurdist humor features deep dives into religion, history, and politics. Eddie has completed several runs for charity and is a well known transvestite.

We saw Captain Marvel. Therefore, we address its place in feminist cinema. Meanwhile, we regard it as another film in the Marvel canon. That is, how does this film fit within the timeline? Also, we elaborate on the characters and their portrayal. Furthermore, we touch upon highlights of the plot. Additionally, we address the comedic tone of the film.

The Dark Track of the Fortnight

Gasher G.14 performs a gothic style of German folk rock. For example, Geschenkt features stripped down flute, piano, violin, and drum. International EBM Day

EBM Day 2019 features as the point in this episode of The Dark Corner. For the 24th of February, DJ Evil Dave curates ten choice tracks. For instance, he presents electronic body music, industrial and electro pop songs.

Can LaDrina leave her barstool long enough to adventure? Can Sir Harold balance being woke with laying on hands? Meanwhile, can the Stupendous Kyle function in society? These questions and more are answered in this story where mystery and fantasy collide.

Follow our hapless heroes as they investigate drug use at a bardic academy. For example, experience the half orc gym instructor. Also, meet the drama kids from the Bardic College of the Arts. Witness the sickly pony. These are but a few highlights from this month’s scenario, Gossamer.

Also, Brandi gets sick on a plane. No. Not in that way. However, she does have a nice room near the beach. Yet, she is too ill to really enjoy it. She curses the woman that got her sick.

In reviews, Brandi digs on the Iron Spider suit. However, her finger hurts from slinging webs. Meanwhile, Dave digs underwater in Minecraft. Also, he acquires a Dragon Egg. We review the stunning film, Annihilation. For instance, the screaming bear haunts Brandi. However, she now wants to read the book series that inspired the film.

Secondly, dream pop band, Bella Lune, performs a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir. This song appears on Covers Vol. 1. Also, Battlejuice performs Falling Star (Feat. Oceanside85). Battlejuice labels their sound as retro wave. Additionally, we review Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This animated film deserves all the praise.
Thirdly, we play a double bill of sexy tunes. Junksista performs Away with the Faeries. Meanwhile, Beauty Queen Autopsy performs Good Giving Game (Go Fight Remix). This remix features cool drums. Also, we review Aquaman. We enjoyed it.
Up next, we play some gothic treats. For instance, Toronto’s Cockatoo performs Kashikikawa. Also, Sound VVitch follows with Rings. We find it creepy. Additionally, we review Mary Poppins Returns. We loved it.
Following, we play a double bill of electronic music. State of the Union performs Industrial. The band offered this song on Twitter. Also, Lederman De Meyer performs Atoms in Fury (Mark from Mesh – Block All Cookies Remix). Finally, we review The Shape of Water. We found it enchanting.
We close this New Years Music Special 2018 with Daniel B Prothese vs. Edwin Vanvinckenroye 99.9 performing Brothers. This song blends EBM and experimental music. Happy New Year, everyone!

Murder Bathroom

In this show, Brandi describes her experience in a murder bathroom. It happened at a Wiseguys after a comedy show. Also, she shares her feelings about Fallout 76. She looks at how the series approaches online gaming. Additionally, she reviews the comic book, Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider. Meanwhile, Dave reviews The Sound of Music by martial-industrial powerhouse, Laibach. He explains how this album softens the usual harsh edge of Laibach’s sound.
The Dark Track is Devil’s in the Details by Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys. The band performs a variation of steampunk complete with era appropriate instruments.
In the point, we present a live Dungeons & Dragons show from The Comedy Loft in Ogden, Utah. Saturday Knights Live is a fantasy version of the Wild West with Dave as the dungeon master. Despite a small audience, the show is a humdinger. Also, we play by 5th edition rules.
Brandi plays the con woman, Ladrina Sharp. She is a half-elf rogue with some skill with a rapier. Meanwhile, Chelsea plays the paladin, Harold Armando LaRonde. Harold is the living image of wealthy white male privilege. Finally, Chris plays the sorcerer of wild magic, Kyle Stormdor. Kyle is full of it. It being magic.
Expect goblin hordes, gruff sheriff’s deputies, adorable brats, and local comedy. Can these characters survive 1st level? According to the number of low rolls, probably not. At least they don’t encounter a murder bathroom. That bathroom is reserved for an entirely different purpose. Oh, and a devil makes a special appearance.

Additionally, crew members of the starship Enterprise get to know one another better. A White House aide panics at the the Democrats taking the house. Also, two friends yell obscenities at the referee of a basketball game.
That’s not all, though. Dave reviews the third season of Daredevil. Also, he compares Ash vs. Evil Dead to Stan against Evil. Brandi starts Fallout 76 while Dave works on retooling a live Dungeons & Dragons show. Additionally, your hosts catch Jackie Kashian at Wiseguys at Jordan Landing. Brandi buys a shirt and we have are picture taken.

Haunted House Party

The Dark Corner hosts a Haunted House Party. That is, we review The House With a Clock In Its Walls and The Haunting of Hill House. For instance, we show how Clock in the Walls precedes Harry Potter. Furthermore, we discuss the more creepy aspects of the film such as the use of the occult. Additionally, we show how the re-imaging of Hill House is unlike the book or the classic film. Therefore, we focus on the family in the film. Also, we look at acting and direction, particularly in episode 6 of the Netflix television series.
Brandi and Dave touch on comedy improv. For instance, Dave fails to record a Brave & Dandi Show. We perform at a library. Also, Dave does comedy improv at a wedding. Meanwhile, the bride performs capoeira moves in a wedding dress.
Dave recommends a new podcast, Commentary Club featuring Jim and Theresa. Commentary Club is a show that comments on classic, cult and crap films as you watch. Subscribe and listen while you watch Ghost Watch this Halloween.

Furthermore, Naughty Zombies perform the death rock song She’s a Vamp from Demo #1. Meanwhile, Bella Lune performs a cover of Dead Souls and Defence Mechanism performs the electro-industrial song, Last Man on Earth (7 Inch Edit). Both songs come from Face the Beat: Session 1.
From Berlin, dark hip hop artist, Charon Exkadi, performs Werwolf from Singles 2009. Also from Germany, Schwarzes Fragment plays Alone in the Dark from Seelenkiller. Finally, we end this Halloween Music Special 2018 on Golden Apes with Devil from Riot and I Am a Monster by Cauda Pavonis from British Post-Gothic You Should Know.
It’s not all music as we begin with some banter. After that, we talk about our inclusion in improv from performing as Brave & Dandi to starting a live play Dungeons & Dragons show. Next, the Dark Track is Nine Dragons by Faith and the Muse. The song comes from :Ankoku Butoh: and has a definitive Japanese flavor. Faith and the Muse is a dark wave band featuring a former member of Christian Death.

ASMR

ASMR is the point in this episode of the Dark Corner Podcast. First, we break down the name. Autonomic means involuntary. Meanwhile, Sensory means perceived. Meridian suggests a pathway in the body. Finally, Response is a reaction to stimulus. That is, ASMR is an uncontrollable physical reaction to a sensation. Dave tells the history of ASMR and its beginnings on public television and whisper videos. Also, he describes the sensation of ASMR and how it is triggered. Furthermore, Dave presents examples of ASMR triggers.
Additionally, Dave describes frisson. Frisson is very much like ASMR. For instance, one gets goosebumps while listening to music. Furthermore, Dave provides examples.

Party Time. The Dark Corner Podcast dive once more into Dungeons and Dragons. In fact, the entire episode is devoted to D&D. Firstly, we record on July 27th, Gary Gygax day. Meanwhile, we make ship puns for no real reason.
We briefly discuss the latest live episode of The Adventure Zone podcast. For instance, we ponder the casting of contrary water based spells. Who casts water walking and water breathing anyway? Also, in Comics Corner, we review the Adventure Zone graphic novel, Here There Be Gerblins. We show how closely the comic compares to the podcast.
The Dark Track is Like the Dragon by Mach Fox. Mach FoX is a multi-genre artist from Minnesota. Like the Dragon features on the The Sky is Falling EP.
In the point, we attempt to build a D&D party by slotting in various characters. For instance, we choose from comic books, video games and actual life. Primarily, we start with the main five. That is, we select a ranger, cleric, rogue, fighter and wizard. Furthermore, extra time allows us to choose the other classes as well. For example, we choose a barbarian, a monk, a sorcerer and a warlock. However, we struggle to find a decent druid. Of course, we share some of our own D&D stories.
In shout outs, Dave honors Gary Gygax. Gary invented the system we know as Dungeons & Dragons. Meanwhile, Brandi celebrates Mary Wiseman. Brandi accidentally said Farting Force instead of Fighting Force. Therefore, we decided to make Farting Force into a screenplay. For instance, we come up with a plot. Also, we decide on a cast and develop the characters.
Meanwhile, Dave’s laptop goes belly up. Therefore, we record on Brandi’s computer. Its just like the old days. Also, Brandi and Dave surprise the folks at Apple with more information than they are used to.
In news, we play our new Dungeons & Dragons characters. For example, Brandi discovers her demon Hunter might as well come from the San Fernando valley. Meanwhile, a legendary hero strikes an ally. Meanwhile, a Chinese immortal sits and observes while a demo cat wrestles with a thug. All the while, a fighting monk punches and kicks with flaming hands and feet.
Afterwards, we admire the hard science in The Expanse. Furthermore, we go deep into the symbolism within Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom. You may be surprised at how much moral philosophy comes up in the discussion.
The Dark Track is Silent Killing (Remix) by No Sleep by the Machine. No Sleep by the Machine is an old school Electo Body Music band from Stockholm, Sweden. Afterwards, we play a promo for The Feminine Critique Podcast.

World Goth Day Epics Music Special

David and Brandi Jackola — Sat, 19 May 2018 21:58:17 GMT

Celebrate World Goth Day with this ninety minute epics music special. DJ Evil Dave presents ten tracks of epic length and content. Primarily, Dave offers up an eight song block at the heart of the show. Meanwhile, songs open and close the show as bookends. Also, Dave defines what makes a gothic song an epic. Furthermore, he illustrates the various elements of gothic rock.
First, we open with Riot by Golden Apes. Riot appears on the album of the same name. Formed in 1998, Golden Apes are based in Hamburg, Germany. Additionally, Golden Apes showcase deep vocals alongside sweeping melodies.
Second, The Sisterhood perform Giving Ground from the album Gift. Alternately, The Sisterhood features a more electronic sound. Interestingly, The Sisterhood was a side project of Andrew Eldritch of the Sisters of Mercy. The sound is quite minimal, though the use of a drum machine is prominent.
Similarly, Defekt 86 of Germany perform Silence from the album, Ultramarin. This slice of post punk features a slow to fast tempo alongside deep vocals. Meanwhile, heavy distortion colors the guitar effects.
Fourth, Giants Causeway bring their gothic-doom sound to Wait. The German band offers up a lot of pathos to a lumbering, even ponderous beat. Wait features sweeping synths that add some lift to an otherwise oppressive track.
Central to the show, The Gathering presents Heroes for Ghosts from The West Pole. Interestingly, The Gathering’s gothic metal sound pairs well with that of Giants Causeway. However, the vocals of Silje Wergeland bring much needed femininity to this music special. Moreover, this song doubles as the longest and the most mainstream to be featured in this epics music special.
Sixth, Vancouver’s The Silence Industry performs The Color of Heaven (All My Love) from The Teeth of Tomorrow. Their sound falls somewhere between post punk and progressive rock, making them an ideal choice for this epics music special.
Similarly, Aeon Sable comes with Drawing Circles Square from Aequinoctium. This German band was inspired by Bauhaus and Fields of the Nephilim among others. They bring a gothic revival sound.
Changing course, Neon Zoo presents The Offering from O. This dark wave band from the UK blends sexy vocals with heavy electronics. An experimental band, Neon Zoo is hard to pin down.
Ninth, Arcane Winter brings the heat with Another Sorrow from Welcome to Winter. This post punk band from Nottingham show off their punk rock roots. Another Sorrow is loud, hard and fast.
Finally, The Last Cry performs Living in Grey from the album of the same name. This band from all over the UK present yet another dismal and oppressive slice of gothic rock. However, the vocal stylings truly bring this song to life. Meanwhile, the guitar rivals that of Robert Smith.

Character Class Warfare

Chelsea Maki and Chris Bodily join the Dark Corner to debate each character class in D&D. First, we get to know Chris and Chelsea. How much experience have they with Dungeons and Dragons? Also, have they played similar role-playing games? Furthermore, we find out about their creative projects. Chris is an illustrator under the moniker Hatrobot. Meanwhile, Chelsea makes graphic art under Chelsea Maki Creative. Also, they coach and perform improv comedy.

In part two, we discuss the classes under god and country. For instance, the cleric, the fighter and the paladin concern themselves with war and conflict. Therefore, we cover effectiveness in a party as well as how fun the character is to play. Furthermore, we compare spell casting abilities of each.
In part three, magic users take the spotlight. Therefore, we compare the features of the bard, the sorcerer and the wizard. For instance, we go deep into how each class learns magic. Also, we share points on how a magic user can contribute to the party.
In part four, we cover the leftovers. The monk, the rogue and the warlock belong to the outsiders and outcastes. Each character class in this group possesses unique features unlike even one another. For instance, the monk focuses on unarmed combat. Meanwhile, the rogue balances stealth and skill. Finally, the warlock gains power through a pact with a powerful patron.
Ultimately, we pit the winners of each group against one another to come up with the best overall character class to play in Dungeons and Dragons. You will have to listen to find out the result. Brandi obsesses over the four issue run of the Doctor Strange comic, Damnation. Meanwhile, Dave binges on the Good Christian Fun podcast. This podcast looks at pop culture created by Christians for Christians. The show is lovingly irreverent.
In the commentary, we address Marvel Studios’ problems with creating an interesting villain. Furthermore, we honor the fight sequences. Meanwhile, we follow the arc of the hero as he learns to put others before his own self-interest. Also, Brandi points out a few differences between the comic book version and the filmic version of the character.

The Dark Corner Podcast celebrates EBM Day 2018 with another music special. EBM Day honors Electronic Body Music, a style of electronic dance music established in the mid 1980s. First, Flatline performs Machinery. Also, this song appears on the album, Enjoy the Noise. Furthermore, Dave explains how EBM Day got its name. Also, Dave describes some of the influences that led to the style of music.

For The Point, Dave discusses Sagittarius. The ninth sign of the zodiac is explored in full. First, Dave points out the symbolism of the Centaur. He talks about how the sign illustrates the animal, human, and spiritual aspects of Sagittarius. Meanwhile, he supports this image by tracing the path of the sun through the degrees of the constellation.
