In the aftermath of the event at Fort Hood this past Thursday, November 5th, we're joined by Pastor Ron Meyer of Faith Viera Lutheran Church to discuss the kind of theology that gives great comfort in times of intense grief.

When I saw the reports that afternoon concerning Fort Hood and the devastation wrought by a lone gunman, someone in the room with me asked "where was God in all of this?" Indeed, where was He? We answer that question, talk about just vs. unjust wars, and we talk about a grief stricken savior, weeping over the death of his dear friend, Lazarus.

But in the first half we talk about the Roman Catholic Church making overtures to Anglican and Episcopal congregations allowing them to come into communion with Rome, the Anathemas of Trent, the Book of Concord, and the Thirty-nine Articles. Can anyone be expected to compromise on the Gospel of Jesus just to be in Communion with Rome?

Rome Expects us to. In fact, any congregation going this route is giving up more than they think they are.

Is Jesus the Messiah?

John Haggee wrote a book called "in Defense of Israel", where he says that Jesus didn't come to be the Messiah, that the Jewish people can't be blamed for rejecting what was never offered to them, and that the Jewish people are still saved under the old covenant.

So we're making this program "in Defense of Jesus", because Jesus most emphatically is the Messiah. Listen to this one, it's important stuff, as the Gospel always is important.

What Does God's Word Say?

After last week's show on the ELCA's decision to bless the ordination of homosexual clergy, we had one caller who strongly disagrees with our stance on the issue. We'd like to think William for being the kind of caller who, even though he disagrees with us, was kind and considerate.

Afterwards we talked about the difference between putting a burden on people (such as many believe we want to burden homosexuals unfairly by calling their lifestyles sinful) and what it means when Jesus tells us in Luke chapter 4 when he quotes from the scroll of Isaiah:

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
      because he has anointed me
      to preach good news to the poor.
   He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
      and recovery of sight for the blind,
   to release the oppressed,
    to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

It's one thing to try and do away with God's Law and do away with the condemnation of sin. It's another thing entirely to be set free!

I remember getting the idea to do an upbeat version of this old Advent Hymn when I heard the Choir at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis do it as though it were a march... The impression I got was it's a song you sing as you're carrying the Good News to "Those who sit in Darkness". We all decided this should be the theme for the show, since most other shows already use "A mighty Fortress" as their opening theme.

There's something which confuses me about Sola Fide. If we're saved by grace alone through faith alone by Christ alone on the authority of scripture alone, why are sacraments necessary? I'm not necessarily doubting the necessity of sacraments, I just don't understand that if access to salvation comes down to faith alone (sola), then how is it alone if a sacrament must be coupled with it? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Something Matt mentioned in the last was the first time Iâd heard someone else really articulate it, someone whoâd been there once and that is the spirit of antichrist wafting in the protestant church. I use to tell my wife back during my struggles with âwas Christ really for meâ, that dark, dark, dark time, âI believe more deception and covering up of Christ occurs not so much overtly but under the guise of âniceâ and smiles and from well meaning fellows and pastors. Not the kind of guys youâd label, âthatâs my enemyâ.â Iâve told her, ââI think weâve been tainted by dispensationalism and Hollywoodâwe think antichrist and Pharisees are these âdark smoking back room hand wringing plottersâ, or the church Lady on SNL a few years back.

But Iâm beginning to think thatâs a fake or rouse to keep us from looking at the real antichristic spirit of our age, even in the protestant church. For the real Christ and him crucified cover uppersare not at all like that. In a sense that would be obvious and EASY to avoidâlike a thief coming at you a mile away with his gun drawn. No now days itâs sold to you under nice things and generally morals we all want. Christ is covered up more there than anywhere so that either you end up overly proud of yourself that you are doing it OR you end up in despair thinking, âIâm lost for sureâ.â If youâve been in that you know what that is like and its hard to uncover. In a sense a Hollywood Pharisee would be refreshingly easy to refute!

You all have done a WONDERFUL job of reorienting what antichrist and all involved is. It donned on me the other day listening that it makes sense â the deception even of dispensationalism. If the devil can get the church laity to be looking for the boogy man in some political figure, he can then sneak in under the radar under morals and things whether from Rome or within the protestant church itself in general and REALLY cover up Christ. Because we can unite with Rome around a moral issue but at the price of the Gospel itself.

Great, great, great work brothersâkeep it up you have no idea how much you feed us!

I heard the "water valve" illustration and find it to be compelling. However, I feel that illustration still places a burden on the PERSON and not on GOD because the person can close the valve. In working with this illustration, we all close the valve all the time. So, how does the valve stay open for some even when they try to close it and for some it closes. If election is truly based solely on God, then he must choose whose valve opens and whose valve closes at the end of their life. I don't see how you can get around the fact that God elects for salvation and selects some for condemnation. If condemnation is based on something in us denying God's offer of salvation then, by default, salvation is also based on the lack of that same thing IN US. I don't believe you can have election for salvation from God without selection for condemnation by God as well.

I am listening to the program on "The United States of the Beast". Didn't Luther, Calvin, and all the Reformers point to the dynasty of the Popes as the beast of Revelation? It seems to fit to me. Maybe I am getting ahead of myself because I didn't get to the end yet. Some Lutherans sound really anti-Calvinist. Am I damned for being Calvinist? If so let me know why before it's too late. I love Lutherans no matter what they say. Martin Luther rocks. In Christ, (unless Calvinists are damned)

The Morality Wars Of all the movements in Christian History, none have compared with the rampant Moralism that has taken root in our churches today. Where the true central article of the faith was once Christ and Him Crucified, and even such statements as Christ alone is central to all of our faith and practice used to be the norm, there has been a slow shift towards making our deeds central to our faith rather than our creeds. Where once the confession was that we believe in Jesus Christ, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilot, was Crucified, Died, Buried, and risen on the third day, the church at large has all but abandoned this simple proclamation in favor of what is seen as âGood Christian Moralsâ. Indeed, this is the message that is too often proclaimed instead of the cross.

Because this is the season of Advent, Pastor decided he wanted to take the hymn Comfort Comfort These My People and talk about the meaning behind the words. As many of you know, our opening bump music features this hymn and this is the focus of our ministry. We wound up talking about the Radical Grace Ministry of speaking to those who sit in darkness and speak to all Jerusalem. We also wound up talking about a mid nineteenth century concept of The Spirit of Diotrophes, this idea that we shouldnât be causing division over such doctrines as who Jesus is and the like. This is an important discussion because we believe that this speaks to the heart of the tendency of Christians today to not want to talk about important doctrines because they believe the cause division and strife. Sometimes sound doctrine does cause division, but better that than someone living in idolatry.

A judge wants Seth and his Synod to Practice open communion with a Rival Lutheran Group, and very likely the Judge will issue a contempt order to have Seth and two other pastors thrown in Jail. All because he stands by the word of God and the Lutheran Confessions.
