When we started our PorntoPurity.com and started sharing resources with the world we were contacted by Jerry and Susan Sinclair of Faithful and True of Jacksonville, FL.

Jerry and his wife are marriage missionaries, and for the last 15 years they have been helping individuals and couples who struggle with sexual addiction.  They have set up quite a network in the Jacksonville area and currently have nine men’s groups and two spouses groups meeting. They regularly talk with churches about how to set up support groups and help sexual strugglers in their communities.

Jerry was counseled by Dr. Mark Laaser early in his recovery, and has been to many Faithful and True workshops.

On this special edition of the Porn to Purity Podcast, Jeff and Marsha talk with Crystal Renaud (REN-OH) of Dirty Girls Ministries.  Crystal struggled with sexual addiction in her adolescence.  As she began to seek freedom and get help, she  noticed there were few resources for women with sexual addiction.  With the encouragement of friends and her minister she began to share her story and reach out to other women through social media.

Dirty Girls Ministries has a private online community of 600 women who are working on their own struggles.  Crystal’s book Dirty Girls Come Clean was published earlier this year, and she is preparing to host her first Dirty Girls Ministries conference in 2012.

Ricky is Pastor of Pastoral Care at Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC and oversees the Christian men’s purity group that meets at the church on a weekly basis.  I met him as I started attending this group for my on recovery.  Since then, Ricky has become an important friend to me, not only for sharing his 20 years of experience working with men with sexual struggles, but for the conversations we had about ministry.

In his semi-retirement, Ricky has started a pastoral counseling ministry called Barnabas Ministries of the Triangle.

One of my favorite sexual addiction recovery ministries is Pure Life Ministries.  Founded by Steve Gallagher, they are highly respected for their Christ-centered focus, live-in program, at-home program, and resources on purity.

Jeff Colon was a student in the live-in program.  Through the discipleship of Pure Life Ministries and their counselors, Jeff was able to overcome his sexual addiction and see his marriage with Rose restored.  Rose benefitted from the counseling for spouses at Pure Life.  Jeff and Rose were later asked to stay on and begin helping others with their recoveries.  Jeff is now President of Pure Life Ministries.  Rose is director of their women’s counseling program.

Recently, I interviewed Rick Thomas of Competent Counseling.com. We were talking about his ministry, his writing and how we can find health in our sexuality.  I threw in the question “So, how dangerous is the Internet?”.  It led to 8 minutes of very interesting conversation about the nature of the Internet of Facebook and of social media sites.

I won’t spoil it for you, I’d like you to listen to the podcast.

But I was blown away when Rick said there are some dangers that are obvious, but there are other dangers that we have no idea about.  We don’t know the true affect the Internet is having on us as sexual strugglers and on our society.

It may seem shocking to some of us that ministers struggle with sexual sin.  Let’s remember that our ministers are real people.  They are men and women just like you and me.  They have struggles, they have baggage, they have imperfect backgrounds and upbringings, they may have had sexual struggles long before being called to vocational ministry.  And like you and me, they didn’t know how to work on it.

Sexual sin is extremely powerful for all of us.  Just because a person has had theological training, and a calling to vocational ministry doesn’t mean that they are immune to sexual struggles.

In fact, ministers are often at higher risk for secret sins.  They have very stressful jobs, they are trying to please many people who have different ideas about how they should conduct their job, they are leading, they are managing conflict, they are counseling hurt people, they are expected to grow a church, teach, preach, train leaders, and have the perfect families.  That’s a lot of stress for a minister.

Ministers are often the only staff member.  They spend a lot of time alone.  They are independent and often unaccountable.  That’s a recipe for falling into sexual sin.

And like you and me, ministers will try to medicate their stress and their wounds with different vices.  Sexual sin is very private and easy to hide.  It is a natural place for many ministers to gravitate.

HOW THESE PODCASTS CAN HELP MINISTERS
If you’re a minister, I hope through these podcasts that you will realize that you are:

1. Not alone
2. There are people out here that understand you
3. Your situation is not hopeless
4. You can come out of isolation, in a safe way, and work on your sexual struggles

HOW THESE PODCASTS CAN HELP NON-MINISTERS
If you’re not a minister, you can skip these podcasts if you want.  Or maybe they will help you understand the unique struggles and fears that a minister has when he or she is struggling with sexual sin.

Maybe this series of podcasts will give you some insight as to the rejection and abuse that pastor’s receive when they share their sexual struggles.  We as a church need to stop ranking sins.  Yes the consequences of sexual sin can be different than other sins, but the person who is in bondage to sexual sin needs to feel the love, mercy, compassion, and comfort of the Body of Christ and be nursed back to health.

MY SEXUAL STRUGGLES AND WHAT I NEEDED
I struggled sexually for 25 years.  I brought my sexual struggles into Seminary and walked out with them.  I brought my struggles into my marriage and my ministry and kept struggling.  When my secret sins were exposed I and my family were devastated.

What I felt from the body of Christ was not what I would call love, compassion, and mercy.  There were not many who ran to our side when we were in Crisis.  There were not many who saw us as broken and hurting.  We felt alone, and didn’t know where to turn to.

WHAT THE SERIES WILL LOOK LIKE
During this special series of podcasts I want to pour out my heart for pastors.  We’ll be talking about the:

• Fears ministers have
• What ministers are feeling when they’re struggling
• What getting exposed looks like
• Why we need to come out of our isolation
• Thoughts on finding victory over sexual sin
• And Where a minister can turn to for help

This series will take several weeks.  Podcasts will be released on Sundays and Wednesdays for 4 or 5 weeks.  Included is a 3-part interview with Mark Brower of SexualSanity.com.  Mark actively works with pastors who struggle sexually.  He leads a pastor’s phone support group and a face-to-face support group for pastors.  His podcasts will be especially helpful.

After our special series, our second season of Top Tips For Sexual Purity will launch.
