After an unintentional hiatus (it always seems to happen around the beginning of the year) The Workshop returns. Fresh off our worst episode comes… a better one. Hopefully.

I got engaged recently so there’s talk of that on this episode. I supposed this is the “public” announcement of that unless you define Facebook announcements as “public” and I think everybody does these days. I both botched and misattributed a semi-well known quote about writing during the episode. The actual quotation is “Books aren’t written – they’re rewritten.” That’s from author Michael Crichton who most famously wrote Jurassic Park.

Happy New Year from the least-sarcastic parts of our hearts!

On the first episode of this brand-new not-yet-too-terrible year we talk resolutions, the “Matt Takes” Twitter account, parody Twitter accounts in general, and Star Wars including a non-spoilery discussion of Rogue One.

This episode was recorded before Carrie Fisher (and Debbie Reynolds!) passed away so that’s why we didn’t mention her in our Star Wars talk. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that here. What a bummer.

I’ve been re-watching the original trilogy recently and I’ve been impressed by how much Fisher – and all the lead actors, really – brought to their roles. Star Wars is truly greater than the sum of its parts and Carrie Fisher was a significant part of making that happen.

The Workshop is a podcast I started with my friend Eric Ortscheid after we realized that all of our interaction basically sounded like we were on a podcast anyway. Might as well record our conversations, I guess.

It’s called The Workshop as in we’re “workshopping” that idea. It’s not a show about woodworking or DIY projects or something. Heck no.

We’ve been talking about doing this for months and at some point it turned from a joke into an actual thing. People we know have told us they would listen to a podcast if we actually did one. We’re calling their bluff.

Will this be interesting to anybody but us? I donno, but we had fun making it and it’s fun to make things even if it’s just shooting the breeze in a fairly flippant manner.

Although we mention an “Episode 0” on the show, I decided not to post our test run. The audio didn’t record properly and it’s just not that worth listening to. Hey, that’s why we did a test.

In this inaugural episode of the show, we talk about how to make a podcast, tease our million dollar idea for a hipster calendar, and ask why Disney is allowed to own everything but not be looked at as a giant, evil corporation?
