Autumn is my favorite season. Layering yields unlimited wardrobe options from your closet. There are many options for warm, tasty things to drink from a mug. The air has a crisp bite and the trees expand their color palette before going dormant for winter.

Washington, D.C. is absolutely gorgeous this time of year. On one brisk and sunny afternoon last month, I was playing an in-store event at Steadfast Supply. To the credit of the staff who booked me and everyone who stopped by that day, I was able to program a set that went beyond the pedestrian tunes needed for a standard retail gig so I hit ‘record’. The result is a live mix of progressive grooves suited to the pace of exploring the city as the days get shorter and the wind sharpens your senses.

In the days since, the temperatures have bounced between balmy, cool and cold. Then suddenly the trees dropped their foliage to the ground all at once. This is Autumn’s End.

Enter Axel F.

’80s and ’90s have been done as well as disco and soul classics. New Jack Swing hasn’t been done PROPERLY (yet). Golden era hip-hop is done a lot. We love all of those and continue to rock them, but there’s a period that hasn’t been examined.

From roughly 1977 – 1987 (folks tend to debate those dates but there are some clear markers) popular black music transitioned between the disco era and hip-hop’s rise to prominence. There were a lot of synthesizers and some androgynous fashion choices, as well as hair disasters. Some call this stuff “boogie”. We file it under the mantle of champagne soul and jheri curl funk, with some new wave thrown in, because we like stuff like Talking Heads and want to play that too.

Per DJ Jahsonic‘s original concept, Eddie Murphy’s turn in Beverly Hills Cop became Axel F’s muse.

Now we’ll be paying homage to a different ’80s movie every month. February is the debut of Black Kevin Bacon.

Join myself, DJ Jahsonic and DJ Adrian Loving for another sweaty, grooving night of synthed out Reagan era dance classics.

Summer of Michael Jackson vol. 1: Sunshine by Dj Stylus on Mixcloud

Part of it may have been an attempt to avoid going back to the dark emotional place of June 25, 2009, but my crew decided we were going to hold off on the Michael Jackson memorializing until his birthday on August 29. I did re-post the recording from our epic MJ church service at Marvin last year. Then I got the call from SoulBounce to be a part of their Summer of Michael Jackson.

They had the fresh idea to release a series of themed Michael Jackson mixes based upon the refrain from “Blame It On The Boogie”. It was a hard choice, but I decided to take on “Sunshine”. The main reason is that there’s so much great material in the early Jackson catalog that goes unrecognized. And when you experience it in a big dose, it’s astounding how gifted Michael was as a child and teenager.
