John Anderson spent 25 years in the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets), retiring at the rank of Sergeant Major. He served three tours in Vietnam, working with such elite units as CCN (Command and Control North) and the Mike Force (Mobile Strike Force) as part of MACV/SOG. In 2002 he began collaborating on several projects with his friend and mentor Mr. Loren W. Christensen. He co-wrote three books with Mr. Christensen, with several more in progress, and has written numerous articles for books and magazines. In June 2006 he completed a video shoot at Paladin Press for a series of instructional tapes and DVDs titled “Combat Sanshou.” Since then he has gone on to release more instructional material.

Wim Demeere started his training in the martial arts at age 14 with the study of judo and ju jitsu with Mr. Roland Blanchaert. After a short while he switched to a traditional Chinese style called Hung Chia Pai with Mr. Jean-Louis Gonsette, a pioneer of Chinese martial arts in Europe. Mr. Gonsette’s classes were physically and mentally challenging, which inspired him to train hard both during and outside of the classes. This brutal and effective style ignited his passion for the martial arts and he began a lifelong journey of study and training.

At age 18 he began competing in full contact tournaments and specialized in Chinese free fighting competitions called “sanda.” After obtaining his first national title he moved on to the international scene and participated in several European and World championships. He retired from full-contact competitions in 2000 when he became national trainer for the sanda team of the Belgian Wushu Federation.

So it begins, at the age of 34, Mr. Darryl-James Johnson emerges from his sleep in a dream world where he cannot see most things and the few things he can see are a struggle to bring into focus. Later Mr. Johnson learns that he has been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative genetic disease that typically starts with the loss of night and peripheral vision; and, over time total blindness can occur.

Loren W. Christensen is a Vietnam veteran, retired police officer, a martial artist since 1965, and a prolific author of books and magazine articles.

Mr. Christensen was still a rookie on probation when his police agency recruited him to teach defensive tactics to new officers hired just a few months after him. Since then, he has trained countless police academies, in-service officers, transit system authorities,security agents, hotel security personnel, mental health nurses, and criminal justice students. Loren began his martial arts journey in 1965 and over the decades of continuous study has earned 11 black belts in three fighting arts: 8th-degree black belt karate, 2nd-degree black belt jujitsu, and 1st-degree black belt arnis.

A resident of Denver, Colorado, and a computer professional for nearly 4 decades, Bob Orlando was introduced to the martial arts while on active duty in the U.S. Marines (1961-1964).  However, it was not until after he left the service that the flicker of interest that was kindled there became his consuming fire.

Orlando began serious study in Chinese kenpo-karate in October, 1968.  Shortly thereafter he switched to kung fu, studying under Al Dacascos (then teaching in Denver, Colorado).  His training with Dacascos lasted three years until a back operation made it impossible to continue in Dacascos' high-kicking style of kung fu.  It was back to Chinese kenpo.  There Bob received his first-degree black belt from Dr. John P. Cochran.  Although Bob has subsequently earned additional rank, he prefers to say that he is a student of the arts and leave it at that. "Rank," he says, "is excess baggage.  It becomes a hindrance to learning because everyone expects that you already know everything."

Ever a student of the arts, Bob's quest for knowledge has taken him into aikido, Small-Circle Jujitsu, grappling, iaido, arnis de mano, and eskrima.  However, what has impacted him the most are the years he has spent studying Chinese kuntao and Dutch-Indonesian pukulan pentjak silat under Dutch-Indonesian master Willem de Thouars.  After a decade of training with de Thouars, Bob received his teaching certificate from him in 1994.

A graduate of a Jesuit university, Bob is the author of Indonesian Fighting Fundamentals The Brutal Arts of the Archipelago, Martial Arts America: A Western Approach to Eastern Arts, and four highly recommended martial art videos.

Dr. Miller retired from his veterinary practice in 1987 in order to devote his full time to the teaching of equine behavior and to support the revolution in horsemanship that began in the Western United States in the late 20th Century and is now a worldwide phenomenon. He is best known for his scientifically based system of training newborn foals. Colonel Thorsness enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 19, mainly because he had a brother serving in Korea. Though he didn’t make it to Korea himself, he stayed in the military, becoming an officer and a fighter pilot. In 1966, he went to Vietnam as part of a squadron of specially modified two-seat F-105 “Wild Weasel” aircraft that had the job of finding and destroying surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites. On April 19, 1967, Colonel, then Major, Thorsness and his electronic warfare officer, Captain Harold E. Johnson, were on a missile suppression mission over North Vietnam. He and his wingman attacked and silenced a surface-to-air missile site with air-to-ground missiles and then destroyed a second site with bombs. In the attack on the second missile site, Colonel Thorsness’ wingman was shot down by intensive antiaircraft fire and the two crew members abandoned their aircraft. Colonel Thorsness circled the descending parachutes to keep the crew members in sight and relay their position to the Search and Rescue Center. During this maneuver, a MIG-17 was sighted in the area. Thorsness immediately initiated an attack and destroyed the MIG.

Because his aircraft was low on fuel, Colonel Thorsness was forced to depart the area in search of a tanker. Upon being advised that two helicopters were orbiting over the downed crew’s position and that there were hostile MIGs in the area posing a serious threat to the helicopters, despite his low fuel condition, Colonel Thorsness decided to return through a hostile environment of surface-to-air missiles and antiaircraft defenses to the downed crew’s position. As he approached the area, he spotted four MIG-17 aircraft and immediately initiated an attack, damaging one and driving the others away from the rescue scene.

When it became apparent that an aircraft in the area was critically low on fuel and the crew would have to abandon the aircraft unless they could reach a tanker, Thorsness, although critically short on fuel himself, helped avert further possible loss of life and a friendly aircraft by recovering at a forward operating base, thus allowing the aircraft in emergency fuel condition to refuel safely. Just as Thorsness landed, his fuel ran out and the engine shut down.

Two weeks later, he was shot down over North Vietnam on his ninety-third mission. He bailed out and was captured and wound up as a prisoner of war for a period of six years during which time he suffered torture on a regular basis. He was released in March, 1973 and was presented with his Medal of Honor on October 15, 1973. Ten days later, no longer able to fly fighters due to injuries sustained in captivity, he retired from the Air Force.

During his career, Colonel Thorsness earned the Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with five Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. He and his wife Gaylee reside in Saddlebrook, Arizona.

Kingsley Browne is a professor of law at Wayne State University Law School,specializing in employment discrimination and other aspects of employment law. Jay P. Dolan, PhD., is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Notre Dame. He has written or edited numerous books related to the history of American Catholicism. His book, The American Catholic Experience: A History from Colonial Times to the Present, is recognized as the standard history of Catholicism in the United States. Other titles include In Search of an American Catholicism, a study of how American culture has shaped Catholicism over the course of the past 200 years.  He has lectured widely across the United States and also in the British Isles. Most recently he was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. Professor Dolan was also a visiting professor at Boston College and University College in Cork, Ireland. He served as the President of the American Society of Church History and also the American Catholic Historical association. He is only one of four individuals who have served as president of both these scholarly societies during the course of their history. He has also served on numerous editorial boards for scholarly journals and publication series. Greg felt his son would need the education of the fighting arts to help give him confidence and drive. At the tender age of four, Glen put on his first pair of boxing loves and began his pugilistic career. Under the strict guidance of his father, Glen continued to train for over eight years in both boxing and the Doyle family style of Irish stick fighting.

However, at age twelve, Glen startled his father with an observation about his boxing art. He told his father that although boxing was an outstanding sport for both endurance and coordination, he found it limited in its realism for street combat. Glen sat his father down and mapped out boxing limits with respect to striking and defending below the waist, and weight disadvantages.

With the support of his father, Glen decided to look for a more complete fighting art. The search took him through a sampling of the Japanese and Korean arts, and even into the military for a few years to test out its hand-to-hand combat program. Nothing seemed to make him feel complete.

Then in 1983, strictly by chance, Glen met an elderly Chinese gentleman, Mr. James Lore (Lore King Hong). Lore was a Hung Gar Gung Fu teacher at the Jing Mo Kung-Fu Club, which operated out of the Chinese Community Center of Ontario. Glen watched one class and signed up...the partnership had begun.

For the next five years, Glen trained every day for six to seven hours and moved up his club's pecking order. Though Glen was not Chinese, he threw himself totally into both his martial art and the Chinese culture and became a recognized face in Toronto's Chinatown, earning the Chinese name of Lok Siu Fung (after a figure in Chinese mythology).

Glen's next step was the competition circuit, and on his first outing he won the Eastern Canadian Championships and won a chance to compete in the Canadian National Championships, which saw teams from all over Canada and numerous teams from the U.S. The competition was fierce, but Glen emerged as the Canadian Champion, and would keep the title, until he stepped down to pursue other interests in the form of training sports teams and adopting his fighting theories to all aspects of life -- from self-defense to self-help.

Developing his andmartial arts cross-training techniques, Glen went on and became the martial arts coach for figure-skating mega-star Elvis Stojko (who still works with him), ice dancers Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz,Pro-Roller Hockey teams, AHL and OHL players, soccer teams, football teams and more.

Glen now offers unique, highly effective martial arts cross-training classes and seminars specifically tailored for hockey,figure skating,running, soccer, basketball, and other sport. Using his keen ability to analyze motion and movement within sport, he takes the muscle explosion, muscle awareness, focus, breathing, power, control,and emboldening self-confidence found in the martial arts and directly applies them to each specific sport and athlete. This streamlined approach allows the athletes to reap many of the benefits of martial arts that are directly applicable to their sport without the time required for studying martial arts in the traditional manner.

Glen's style, flair, and open approach to his martial arts has landed him on the cover of numerous magazines, seen him perform at both national and international events, on television shows throughout Canada and the U.S., and even won him the prestigious honor of being the special guest performer at the historic Opening Ceremonies of the World Wu Shu Championships in 1995, held in Baltimore. It was the first time the games had been held outside Asia, and the event was to be seen by millions via satellite.

Always looking for new ways to spread his teachings, Glen accepted assignments as a fight choreographer for Cynthia Rothrock and for Canadian film and television programs. This helped him realize his potential to both teach and learn, and Glen began to set aside much of his time to explore this area. Studying film arts and screenwriting at Ryerson University and then journalism at Humber College, Glen developed new creative avenues to increase his power to teach and invent. However, he did not want to stray from the purity of his art, and he still had a drive to continue to educate and help those wishing to better themselves so Glen decided to put some of his thoughts and ideals into a book entitled The Martial Artist's Way. It is not a picture-filled "how to" book, but rather a simple set of thoughts and suggestions for those wanting to get more from their martial art or sports experiences.

Dr. Thomas B. Graboys is Clinical Professor of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is President Emeritus of the Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation, and former attending cardiologist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Graboys has done early research in the area of cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death. More recently, Graboys has focused on second opinions for interventions in cardiology including catheterization, angioplasty, stents, and coronary bypass surgery.

In addition to his clinical research responsibilities, Dr. Graboys has served on the Editorial Board of the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Noninvasive Cardiology. He was chairman of a Subcommittee on Admissions at Harvard Medical School, and was Chairman of the Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility from 1980-1987. He was a 1986 recipient of the Broad Street Pump Award given by Physicians for Social Responsibility for his work in the antinuclear movement.

Dr. Graboys served as the host and associate producer of a cable television series entitled, "Critical Condition: The Nuclear Arms Race," and as a Medical Editor for "Physicians' Journal Update," seen weekly on the Lifetime Cable Network. He has also served on the National Board of Directors, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Washington, D.C. and the Advisory Board, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. Dr. Graboys was also a member of the Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (1997-2001).

Dr. Graboys is a graduate of Tabor Academy (Cum Laude), Cornell University, and New York Medical College (Alpha Omega Alpha). He completed his internal medicine training at the Boston City Hospital (1970-1972) and cardiovascular fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (1974 1976). Additionally, Dr. Graboys was a Research Associate, Biodynamics Branch, at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks AFB, Texas, where he studied the cardiovascular effects of high gravitational stress.

Dr. Graboys is the author or co-author of approximately 170 publications and abstracts, co-author of a text, Angina Pectoris: Management Strategies and Guide to Interventions (1994), and has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He was the 1992 Recipient of the Harvard Medical School Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 1995 Recipient of the Achievement Award in Preventive Medicine of the American College for Advancement in Medicine.

Bohdi Sanders is a writer, teacher, and martial artist. He has published several articles and has appeared on national radio programs. Jim Standing Bear Wheatley is a Comanche/Choctaw artist. His father was adopted and the road to discovering his ancestry has been a long and difficult. A nationally recognized expert on father-daughter relationships, Dr. Nielsen has been teaching, conducting research and writing about adolescents and father-daughter relationships since 1970. Dr. Thomas Holm (Creek/Cherokee; Ph.D., 1978, University of Oklahoma) came to The University of Arizona in 1980 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science.  He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1986 and to Full Professor in 1995.  In 1982 Professor Holm, Robert K. Thomas, Larry Evers, Vine Deloria, Jr., Emory Sekaquaptewa and N. Scott Momaday developed the M.A. program in American Indian Studies.  In 1994, Professor Holm transferred full time to the American Indian Studies Program.  He has taught over fifteen Native-related courses, nine of which he developed.  He has served as the chair of over thirty-five M.A. committees in both Political Science and American Indian Studies at The University of Arizona and has sat on a number of doctoral committees in American Indian Studies and for the departments of History, Political Science, Education, and Comparative Cultural and Literary Studies.

 Professor Holm served as the chair of the first Ph.D. graduate—J. Diane Pearson—of the U of A American Indian Studies Program.  Four doctoral students whose dissertations he supervised—Pearson, Jeff Boyd, Elise Marubbio, and Ian Record—have had their work published as books.  Professor Holm is currently supervising two doctoral dissertations.  Twice the recipient of the Outstanding Native American faculty award, he has also been selected for an Excellence in Teaching Award during the U of A’s “year of the Undergraduate? in 1988.  In 2004 he was honored with the Graduate College’s Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award. 

Since receiving his degree from the University of Oklahoma, Professor Holm has published over 50 articles, books, pamphlets, government reports, book reviews and essays, editorials and book chapters.  His 1996 book, Strong Hearts, Wounded Souls: The Native American Veterans of the Vietnam War was a finalist for the Victor Turner Prize in ethnographic writing in Canada.

 His most recent articles and book chapters have dealt with the historical militarization of Native American peoples and the development of the “Peoplehood Matrix? as a theoretical construct for Native American/Indigenous Peoples Studies.  A contributor to a large number of historical dictionaries and encyclopedias, Professor Holm has also been called upon to add to forthcoming works on peoplehood, Native American diasporas, Native American leadership, and the late Vine Deloria’s contributions to scholarship.

 Professor Holm currently is working on another book, tentatively entitled “Warfare and the Cherokee State? under contract at the University of Nebraska Press.  In 2006 he completed a book for younger readers, entitled Warriors and Code Talkers: Native Americans and World War II for Chelsea House/Facts on File.  It will be released in the spring of 2007.  He is a reviewer for several academic presses and journals and is an advisory/editorial board member of Ethnic Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity, Red Ink and Wicazo Sa Review.
 Recently, Professor Holm has written two novels: the first is a mystery set in 1920’s Oklahoma and the second an action/adventure set in South America.  The mystery, entitled The Shelby Rose, is to be published by the University of Arizona Press in 2008.  The action/adventure novel is still under consideration at a commercial press.  His latest academic book, The Great Confusion in Indian Affairs: Native Americans and Whites in the Progressive Era was released in 2005 by the University of Texas Press.  

A Cherokee-Muskogee Creek from Oklahoma, Professor Holm has served on numerous Native American boards, panels, and working groups.  He is a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and has taken part in several federal programs dealing with veterans’ affairs.  In the 1980’s he served as an advisor for the Readjustment Counseling Services and as a member of the Native American commission on veterans’ affairs for the Veterans’ Administration.  Professor Holm also has done presentations on Native American veterans before the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.

Born in Avondale (Middle Arm), Newfoundland, Canada, Glen Doyle began his martial arts education at a very young age. Greg Doyle, Glen's father, was a military man who was also a marathoner and a boxer. Greg ran for Canada many times and boxed for the Canadian Armed Forces during and after the Korean War.

Greg felt his son would need the education of the fighting arts to help give him confidence and drive. At the tender age of four, Glen put on his first pair of boxing loves and began his pugilistic career. Under the strict guidance of his father, Glen continued to train for over eight years in both boxing and the Doyle family style of Irish stick fighting.

However, at age twelve, Glen startled his father with an observation about his boxing art. He told his father that although boxing was an outstanding sport for both endurance and coordination, he found it limited in its realism for street combat. Glen sat his father down and mapped out boxing limits with respect to striking and defending below the waist, and weight disadvantages.

With the support of his father, Glen decided to look for a more complete fighting art. The search took him through a sampling of the Japanese and Korean arts, and even into the military for a few years to test out its hand-to-hand combat program. Nothing seemed to make him feel complete.

Then in 1983, strictly by chance, Glen met an elderly Chinese gentleman, Mr. James Lore (Lore King Hong). Lore was a Hung Gar Gung Fu teacher at the Jing Mo Kung-Fu Club, which operated out of the Chinese Community Center of Ontario. Glen watched one class and signed up...the partnership had begun.

For the next five years, Glen trained every day for six to seven hours and moved up his club's pecking order. Though Glen was not Chinese, he threw himself totally into both his martial art and the Chinese culture and became a recognized face in Toronto's Chinatown, earning the Chinese name of Lok Siu Fung (after a figure in Chinese mythology).

Glen's next step was the competition circuit, and on his first outing he won the Eastern Canadian Championships and won a chance to compete in the Canadian National Championships, which saw teams from all over Canada and numerous teams from the U.S. The competition was fierce, but Glen emerged as the Canadian Champion, and would keep the title, until he stepped down to pursue other interests in the form of training sports teams and adopting his fighting theories to all aspects of life -- from self-defense to self-help.

Developing his and martial arts cross-training techniques, Glen went on and became the martial arts coach for figure-skating mega-star Elvis Stojko (who still works with him), ice dancers Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz,Pro-Roller Hockey teams, AHL and OHL players, soccer teams, football teams and more.

Glen now offers unique, highly effective martial arts cross-training classes and seminars specifically tailored for hockey,figure skating, running, soccer, basketball, and other sport. Using his keen ability to analyze motion and movement within sport, he takes the muscle explosion, muscle awareness, focus, breathing, power, control,and emboldening self-confidence found in the martial arts and directly applies them to each specific sport and athlete. This streamlined approach allows the athletes to reap many of the benefits of martial arts that are directly applicable to their sport without the time required for studying martial arts in the traditional manner.

Glen's style, flair, and open approach to his martial arts has landed him on the cover of numerous magazines, seen him perform at both national and international events, on television shows throughout Canada and the U.S., and even won him the prestigious honor of being the special guest performer at the historic Opening Ceremonies of the World Wu Shu Championships in 1995, held in Baltimore. It was the first time the games had been held outside Asia, and the event was to be seen by millions via satellite.

Always looking for new ways to spread his teachings, Glen accepted assignments as a fight choreographer for Cynthia Rothrock and for Canadian film and television programs. This helped him realize his potential to both teach and learn, and Glen began to set aside much of his time to explore this area. Studying film arts and screenwriting at Ryerson University and then journalism at Humber College, Glen developed new creative avenues to increase his power to teach and invent. However, he did not want to stray from the purity of his art, and he still had a drive to continue to educate and help those wishing to better themselves so Glen decided to put some of his thoughts and ideals into a book entitled The Martial Artist's Way. It is not a picture-filled "how to" book, but rather a simple set of thoughts and suggestions for those wanting to get more from their martial art or sports experiences.

In 1979 Mike Schwarz began instructing Tae Kwon Do/Hapkido(Moo Du Kwon) under Master Change Hee Jhoon.  It was thru his TKD/Hapkido training that he was able to develop unmatched body conditioning/hardening skills.  While in the military he continued training with Moo Du Kwon and obtained his 2nd and eventually 3rd Degree Black Belts.

His initial introduction to the FMA came in 1985. Upon his return from the military in 1991 he continued to study in Serra Escrima. Under Punong Guro Churk Caddell III, he achieved Pansiang Guro status. His empty hand, blade and stick/cane abilities increased under his instruction.

Most recently he obtained the status of Master Instructor level & 2nd degree Master Instructor level in the Davis/Cabales System of Escrima. Additionally, he has been asked to represent Martial Arts International & WSEF (World Serrada Escrima Federation) throughout the midwest and east coast.  He represents the ICSDA as a Combat Martial Arts instructor. In 1979 Mike Schwarz began instructing Tae Kwon Do/Hapkido(Moo Du Kwon) under Master Change Hee Jhoon.  It was thru his TKD/Hapkido training that he was able to develop unmatched body conditioning/hardening skills.  While in the military he continued training with Moo Du Kwon and obtained his 2nd and eventually 3rd Degree Black Belts.

His initial introduction to the FMA came in 1985. Upon his return from the military in 1991 he continued to study in Serra Escrima. Under Punong Guro Churk Caddell III, he achieved Pansiang Guro status. His empty hand, blade and stick/cane abilities increased under his instruction.

Most recently he obtained the status of Master Instructor level & 2nd degree Master Instructor level in the Davis/Cabales System of Escrima. Additionally, he has been asked to represent Martial Arts International & WSEF (World Serrada Escrima Federation) throughout the midwest and east coast.  He represents the ICSDA as a Combat Martial Arts instructor. He was strongly influenced by his instructors at the Stockton Escrima Academy in California, including Grandmaster Angel Cabales, Max Sarmiento, Dentoy Revilar and Master Leo Giron, as well as the teachings of his own father. In traditional Japanese Ryu there are no belts to represent promotions, and Hiroshi Yachigusa did not believe in awarding certificates to denote achievement. Though not his custom, in 1989 he granted Gary Moro to the rank of Kyoshi (instructor).
