Francophonie 2011: Exhibitions

During this year’s “Journées de la Francophonie” festival, 3 exhibitions were organized. In this video are the views from their opening receptions. The first exhibition in the video is the exhibition of collages by the renowned Polish artist Hanna Bakuła on the theme of Frédéric Chopin’s life. The second fragment presents the opening reception at the exhibition of photos by 2 students of the International University of Logistics and Transport (Międzynarodowa Wyższa Szkoła Logistyki i Transportu we Wrocławiu) on “Paris en hiver (Winter in Paris).” The third and the last potion of the video is from the opening reception of the photo exhibition “Vue d’un quartier: Photographie de Nadodrze,” a project of Lorette Guillou (FR) realized with Fundacja Dom Pokoju (the House of Peace Foundation) in Wrocław.

Uniwersytecki 1) - On the second day of the “Journées de la Francophonie” festival, Axoum Duo - Elwira Ślązak (PL) & Gabriel Collet (FR) - played a concert of 2 marimbas. The tunes featured in this video are: “Tango-Prélude” (based on F. Chopin’s Prélude 4 op.28) followed by “Prélude-Voyage” (variations on F. Chopin’s Prélude nr. 15 D bémol-majeur op.28), both of which are composed by Axoum Duo’s Gabriel Collet.

Uniwersytecki 1) - This is a fragment of the concert of opera arias by Nikolay Dorozhkin, the distinguished Russian tenor with the Wrocław Opera, accompanied by the pianist Olga Rusina. The concert was performed at the opening of the “Journées de la Francophonie” festival. The aria featured in this video is “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” from the opera “Carmen.”

This is the belated release of the recording of a dance performance - “God Studies #3″ - by Kenneth Flak (NO). It was recorded during the Mandala Festival 2010 (24.04.2010) at IMPART (ul. Mazowiecka 17). In this performance, Flak traces the Norse mythology in 4 parts: “Odin,” “Thor,” “Loki” & “Ragnarök.”

Forum of Possibility 2009

The ARKA Theatre in Wrocław regularly organizes theatre workshops for people with intellectual disabilities or mental illness for the purpose of social and professional rehabilitation. Their public-funded project “Forum Możliwości (Forum of Possibility)” aims to extend their service to other cities in Lower Silesia, and in 2009, they organized the 2nd edition of the project.

From July through November 2009, we followed their workshops held in various cities of Lower Silesia and documented the project in video. During the documentation, we interviewed several people working daily with those with disabilities or illness and asked them about the benefit of theatre workshop as a method of rehabilitation.

Digit-All-love Soundsystem at Mleczarnia

This video features a new track from their upcoming 2nd album.

Paper Theatre: Les frères corses

On 26.09.2009, at the Wrocław Puppet Theatre (Teatr Lalek / pl. Teatralny 4), as a part of the European Day of Languages events, Alexandre Marquézy and Patrycja Łacina-Miarka performed a paper theatre play “Les frères corses (The Corsican Brothers)” in French. The project of the paper theatre at the Wrocław Puppet Theatre aims to reproduce the paper theatre of the 19th century when this form of theatre was very popular. During the preparation of this performance in French, however, the actors decided to update the format. In our interview, Alexandre Marquézy tells us what change they made and why.

This is the recording from the Mandala Performance Festival 2009 (24.04-26.04.2009), recorded on 25.04.2009 at Galeria Miejska (ul. Kiełbaśnicza 28). The Mandala festival is an annual international art performance festival, and the themes of this year were 1) the meeting of art performance and choreography and 2) the question of identity and alienation. In this video, Adam Kamiński - the curator of the festival - elaborates on the selection of these themes.

LILA is a free-style jazz quartet from Switzerland, and the concert took place as a part of “Swiss Club 2009.” “Swiss Club” is a project by Gig-Ant, aiming to promote new (jazz) sounds of Swiss music scenes in Poland.

Monday 16.03.2009, Teatr Lalek - at the gala evening of this year’s Journées de la Francophonie fesvial, a French dance company Marie-Laure Agrapart & Cie, led by dancer/choreographer Marie-Laure Agrapart, performed a piece entitled “Àuctor.” “Àuctor” takes its inspiration from the poetry of Anna Akhmatova, and the dance - performed here by 4 female dancers - is an essay on the theme of femininity in confrontation with silence.

Revenant Sound

On Tuesday 17.02.2009, Galeria ENTROPIA hosted a sound performance entitled “Revenant Sound,” led by John Grzinich & Patrick McGinley. “Revenant Sound” is an open project around site-specific acoustics and sounds. The project is “open” first of all to the different sites and their physical as well as acoustic uniqueness. It is also “open” to the people present on a given site: it breaks down the barrier between “performer” and “spectator” and invites the public to take active part in the formation of a sound landscape. In our interview, Patrick McGinley elaborates more on the project and the sound.

This performance was presented as a part of the “Athletic_Cinema” series.

Enjoy Mondays 3: Terra Incognita III

20.10.2008, OSSOLINEUM INSTITUTE (ul. Szewska 37) - Under the heading of “Terra Incognita III,” Zbigniew Pilch played various violin pieces from the 18th century. “Terra Incognita” is Pilch’s personal project, and it aims to present the compositions which are often confined in the academic and professional circles to the wider public. This concert took place as the second concert in this year’s “Enjoy Mondays” (”Polubisz Poniedziałki”) festival.

The next concert of “Enjoy Mondays” will take place this coming Monday (01.12.2008) at Browar Mieszczański (ul. Hubska 44-48). The title is “Interactions,” and Jagoda Szmytka (electronics), Marta Niedźwiecka (harpsichord) and Elżbieta Woleńska (flute) will play compositions from the 17th & 18th centuries as well as from the 21st century.

Grabiszyńska 56) - This is our second video podcast from Avant Music Festival (19.09.2008 - 27.10.2008), and we bring you the scenes from the concert of Lucas Niggli Drum Quartet “Beat Bag Bohemia.” Drum Quartet is Lucas Niggli’s one of the latest undertakings, and we asked him in the interview how this quartet started and what he had in mind when he composed for this percussions-only quartet.

Avant Music Festival: Małe Instrumenty

26.09.2008, MLECZARNIA (ul. Włodkowica 5) - The local multi-instrumental group “Małe Instrumenty“ played a late-night concert as a part of Avant Music Festival (19.09.2008 - 27.10.2008). “Małe Instrumenty” means “Small instruments,” and as its name indicates, the stage is filled with many small instruments; Some of them look like toys for children and some others really are just toys for children. In the interview, we asked Paweł Romańczuk, a key member of the band, how they musically integrate the use of those toys that never seem to make the sounds we want, and how much of their performance involves improvisation.

Jonquil - Live at Rura

12.09.2008, Jazz Club RURA (ul. Łazienna 4) - An Oxford-based band Jonquil performed their first concert in Poland. The sound in live was much livelier than the recorded version (you can find the samples on their myspace page: www.myspace.com/jonquiluk), and in our interview, Hugo Manuel and Sam Scott from the band explain this difference. In video, they also talk about the history of the band and how their music changed through the band’s development.

Exploding Star Orchestra

Last December, Exploding Star Orchestra played a concert in Wrocław and this week they are back in Poland. This time they are playing in Łodź, at a jazz club Jazzga, as a part of the Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures 2008. To give you a taste of their performance, we present you here the recording from the last year’s concert in Wrocław with a brief interview with the director and composer of the orchestra, Rob Mazurek. It was recorded on 02.12.2007 at Lwow Cinema (ul. Hallera 15) and the concert was organized by OPT.

Wrocław Non Stop 08, Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych (ul. Wystawowa 1) - the video installation by Louis Rollinde - “W.EARTH” - was presented as one of the major events at this year’s Wrocław Non Stop Festival. The installation was inspired by the satellite images from the Google Earth, and Louis Rollinde worked on those still images and transformed them into a set of gigantic installations. In this video, Louis Rollinde leads a quick tour around the installations and talks about the ideas behind the work. The music/sound in this video are performed live on site by Christian Sebille. - N.B. The audio is in French

Shakespeare Wrocław - “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

In May 2008, Shakespeare Wrocław performed “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the courtyard of Club Pracoffnia (ul. Więzienna 6). Shakespeare Wrocław is an amateur/student theatre group led by the director John White, and they perform each year one Shakespearean play in the original English dialogue (Read more about Shakespeare Wrocław and their performance here). After one of their performance, we interviewed the group and asked them about the choice of this year’s play and the challenge they encountered during the preparation.

Miloopa: Unicode Live

27.04.2008, Club Bezsenność (ul. Ruska 51) - after their a-month-long tour to Germany and UK, Miloopa returned to the Wrocław stage. The concert featured Roli Mosimann, the producer of their 2nd album “Unicode.”
Miloopa is a Wrocław-based Drum’n'Bass unit. Their music, however, is not limited to Drum’n'Bass: Miloopa incorporates many different music forms, such as Jungle, Soul, Downtempo, etc.

Ciacho w Mleczarni

On 18.05.2008 at Café Mleczarnia (ul. Włodkowica 5), the exhibition by Anka Mierzejewska - “Ciacho w Mleczarni” – opened the 2-week long festival “Czyli Wrocław,” the first cultural initiative by Mleczarnia Foundation. The exhibition title “Ciacho w Mleczarni” is here given a double meaning: one is literally “cake (ciastko) in Mleczarnia” - making a reference to Mleczarnia as café - and the second meaning is from the Polish slang “Ciacho” - “someone hot, attractive.” In the video interview, Asia Męczyńska, the organizer of the event, and the artist Anka Mierzejewska talk about the idea of the exhibition, the place and the paintings.

Mandala 2008: Interview with Sharon Feder

At the Mandala Performance Festival (25.04.2008 – 27.04.2008), a Canadian actress Sharon Feder presented a performance entitled “Nostalgia”
In the interview after the performance, Feder shared with us some of the personal motivations behind the creation of this piece.
Before the camera, she talks about her family history, homesickness, reflection on plural identities and also the significance of “Wrocław” in all of this.

Francophonie 2008 - Tales of Perrault

This is the last podcast episode from this year’s Journées de la Francophonie (07.03-16.03.2008) in Wrocław.
Arka Theatre presented a theatrical adaptation of 2 of the most famous tales by Charles Perrault: “Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood)” and “Les Fées (Diamonds and Toads).” The play was made primarily for children, but, just like the original stories by Perrault, it was just as enjoyable for the grown-ups. In our interview, the actor Alexandre Marquézy briefly explains the idea behind this adaptation.

Early German Harpsichord

On 29.30.2008 at Ossolineum Hall - this evening’s concert was organized with the heading: “Early German Harpsichord.” In this video, you will see the fragments of a performance of the compositions by Georg Bochm (1661-1733) & Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber (1644-1704). Performing are Urszula Danielewicz (harpsichord), John Ma (violin) & Myriam Rignol (viola da gamba).
This concert was presented as part of the 4th-annual Harpsichord Music Days (26.03-30.03.2008), organized by Ars&Studium.

Francophonie 2008 - A’Corps

Francophonie 2008 - Davy Sicard

The first video podcast from this year’s Journées de la Francophonie (07.03-16.03.2008) presents the concert by Davy Sicard (08.03.2008 at Jazz Club Rura).
The singer Davy Sicard was born in the Réunion Island and is currently living in France. He sang in the mixture of Réunionnaise Creole and French, and, although the lyrics reflected his personal voice, just like the language in which they were sung, the history and the culture of the Réunion Island were also visibly present in many different ways (for example, the selection of themes and topics, words, or stories). “Journées de la Francophonie” is a celebration of the diversity of people who speak French and their culture, and the concert of Davy Sicard could not have been more appropriate as an opening act for the festival.

29.10.2007, MLECZARNIA (ul. Włodkowica 5) — the second exhibition of this year’s “Enjoy Mondays” (“Polubisz Poniedziałki”) festival presented the graphic works by Adrianna Konopniak–Kaprowicz, with the title: “Faktura, struktura, skrzydło, papierowy neobarok (Invoice, Structure, Wing, Paper Neobaroque)”.
Apart from the usual exhibition inside Mleczarnia, there was also an exhibition of graphic works contained in ice sculpture just outside its entrance. The opening reception was accompanied by a short violin concert.

The translation of the interview:
“I am a ceramist from Bourgogne, France.
These faces were mostly developed at the time when there was a production, in the city of Auxerre, of Eugène Ionesco’s play “Jeux de massacre.” At that time, the director who was my friend asked me if I could do some work around this theme.
Other works presented here are about what we call “ceramic paper.” This technique mixes paper pulp with clay. With this, we can create extremely thin sheets of ceramic, like parchment. Sometimes they are barely 1mm thick. This technique allowed me to materialize my graphic work. The graphic work is transposed on ceramic material.
Obviously these works are burned at high temperature: in the wood stove, at 1300℃.“

Molière’s “Le Tartuffe”

Last year Teatr Arka adapted E. Ionesco’s “La Leçon” and presented it with the dialog mixing Polish and French languages. This year, they adapted Molière’s “Le Tartuffe” (”Świętoszek” in Polish) in the same manner. In the interview, the actor Alexandre Marquézy talks about the translation of Molière and the advantage of performing it today in the mixture of Polish and the original French.
“Le Tartuffe (Świętoszek)” premiered on 25.03.2007 during the Journées de la Francophonie 2007 and will continue to be performed through May, June and September.

Here is the video snapshots from the last concert of the alt. rock group George Dorn Screams (21.02.2007, Bezsenność). As Wojtek Trempala from the band explains in the interview, the sound of George Dorn Screams is a combination of the alt. rock instrumental tunes and the haunting female vocal. The resulting sound is non-organic - even the catchy vocal tracks constantly remind the listener of their indie root.
George Dorn Screams returns to the stage of Bezsenność (ul. Ruska 51) on Wednesday, 09.05.2007. The concert starts at 20:00.

Husky in Concert

This is the video recording from the concert of Husky at Firlej (27.01.2007). After a few years of silence, Husky finally released their second album “Zgadnij” (”Guess” in English) at the end of 2006, and this concert was part of their album promotion tour. In the interview after the concert, the composer & producer of the band Jacek Dojwa talks about how Husky was formed and where it is going today.
Husky returns to Wrocław on Wednesday 11.04.2007 for the joint concert with Mikromusic at ALIBI (ul. Grunwaldzka 67). The concert starts at 19:00.

On 29.03.2007, Schola Teatru Wegajty with Wrocław choirs will perform “Ludus Passionis” – the liturgical drama about Passion of Jesus Christ from manuscript Carmina Burana (13th century). We visited their rehearsals and interviewed the key personnel of this production about its play and music.

Dziady - Part II

On Friday 24.11.2006, the new production of “Dziady - Part II” premiered at ARKA Theatre [see our previous post]. “Dziady” (”Forefathers’ Eve”) is a poetic drama written by Adam Mickiewicz and speaks of the “spirits” of the forefathers. In interview, the director Renata Jasińska talks about these “spirits” and also about this new production.
“Dziady - Part II” will be performed on 30.11.2006 (Thu), 01-03.12.2006 (Fri-Sun) and 08-10.12.2006 (Fri-Sun) at 19:00. Arka Theatre is located at the end of the passage at ul. Świdnicka 28.

Elmo was the guest band at the 6th week of “Creative Commons Party” (Saturday, 11.11.2006). Elmo is still a young band and had only a very few concerts in their carrier. In the interview, we asked them what they thought of “Creative Commons Party” and what it meant to them.

Sesshin 2006

12-18.09.2006, the 4th Sesshin took place at Horakuji, Wrocław, in the presence of a Japanese Buddhist teacher - Yamada Bunryo. “Sesshin” is one week of intensive zen training, and Sesshin with Yamada Bunryo Roshi in Wrocław is held every year since 2003. We interviewed Bunyu who is responsible for the organization of this Sesshin, and we asked him how he started the practice of zen and what motivates people to participate in this zen training.

Rather than being simply a “historical” site, it consitutes a “spiritual” centre of the city of Wrocław.

The WrocławNonStop Festival (23.06.2006-02.07.2006) is coming close. As every year, its programme is very colorful, but, just as every year, it is also very difficult to get an overview of the events. To help you get an idea of what to expect this year, we will be previewing in our video podcast some of the artists that you will see at the festival.
The first on our list is Neanderthal Alien (USA, etc.). Originally formed somewhere around Amsterdam, this ecclectic band got a boost in its evolution when a vocalist Dean Bowman joined. We interviewed the founder and the leader of the band, Ranjit Prasad, at Saraswati hotel in Świeradów. The additional video footage is from their concert in Poznań last Summer.
Neanderthal Alien will play at WrocławNonStop: Trip Hop & Urban Island (26.06.2006, Piaskowa Island, FREE), an event organized by Gig Ant promotion.
The next episode will feature the local Digit-All-love.

Because we got a free press accreditation (worth 100EURO!) through the French Embassy office in Wrocław, we decided to be a tourist at Futuallia (01.06 & 02.06.2006). We walked around and filmed the event inside the main venue, Hala Ludowa (literally “People’s Hall,” a name that it inherited from the socialist era, but for some reason, referred at Futurallia always as “Centennial Hall,” the German name from pre-socialist era…).

3 Pieces of the Fables

On 24.05.2006, in Wrocław, we had an unique occasion to see 3 pieces from “les Fables à La Fontaine.” “Les Fables à La Fontaine” is not simply a spectacle but, before being a spectacle, it is first of all a creative project that choreographs a series of “fables” by Jean de la Fontaine, produced by La Petite Fabrique (France). In this Polish tour, the following 3 pieces were in programme: “Le Corbeau et le Renard” by Dominique Hervieu (France) / “Contre ceux qui ont le goût difficile” by Lia Rodrigues (Brasil) / “Le Chêne et le Roseau” by Mourad Merzouki (France). Our video cast presents short extracts from each of these 3 pieces.

Shakespeare Wrocław

Under the direction of John White, the past 6 years the student theatre group “Shakespeare Wrocław” has been presenting the performance of Shakespearian plays with the original English dialogue. This year they selected the comedy “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” In the interview, White explains that Shakespeare is not difficult and that the dramatization of the plays is a way to understand them better. The performance will take place on May 26th, 27th, 28th and June 2nd, 3rd and 4th all at 16:00 at PRACOFFNIA (ul. Więzienna 6).

“Jestem” in Polish means “I am.” 19.05.2006, Angelika Fojtuch presented a performance at Galeria ENTROPIA. Fojtuch started her performance by greeting everyone, addressing each one of them individually in the familier form (”ty”/”you”), and it ended with a text on the wall: “JESTEM.” Our video podcast presents a glimpse of the performance without words nor explanation.

Niggli Quintet in Zoom

In the evening of 19.05.2006, the newly opened basement of Mleczarnia hosted the concert of an accomplished eclectic jazz quintet Lucas Niggli BIG ZOOM. In the video interview, Niggli speaks of his impression of the band’s first tour to Poland. We kept lengthy shots from the concert so that you could see (and hear) better their eclectic harmony and the variety of compositions.

British International School of Cracow (BISC) is opening a new school in Wrocław. On 19.05.2006, BISC held its second information meeting. Against our common assumption, the difference between the international school and the non-international school is not simply where the children come from, and the class taught in English is not enough to make a school truly “international.” Our video podcast features two examples of “internationalism” in BISC’s programme.
In our knowledge, BISC will be the first comprehensive international school in Wrocław, from the nursery up to the end of the secondary education. It will also be the first to provide the genuine, experimented non-Polish education to the international communities in Wrocław: BISC’s programme and philosophy are based on the British educational system and tested already 11 years in its Krakow school, and the classes will be taught in English by the experienced teachers from UK, not by the locally employed “native speakers” or Polish teachers.

The 4th edition of the “Survival” art festival is held, for the first time in its history, in the open public space: the main railway station of Wrocław. One of the key organizers - Michał Bieniek - goes so far as to describe it as “the public space per excellence,” the space that the travellers, the homeless people, the poor and the rich all share alike. In our video interview, we asked Michał Bieniek why “Survival” - why this title was given to this festival and what is its necessity today (political, artistic or otherwise). We also asked him about the experience of working with the space of the railway station.

Tabla Experiment

On 02.05.2006, at Droga do mekki, Niti Ranjan Biswas & Nemanja Rebic played “experimental” Indian tabla + Jazz guitar tunes. It is not everyday that we see tabla performance in Wrocław. Niti is first time in this city, but Rebic is becoming somewhat a regular visitor: we saw Rebic already in the last Summer’s Neanderthal Alien and the last X-mas’s Verstärker both at the pub “Niebo.” We have here a video footage from the concert, along with the interview with the 2 musicians about the idea of this “experiment.”

During the last days of “Mandala” festival , the painter Sylvie Pothier (FR) is presenting her works at Galeria Miejska under the title of “Homage Frida Kahlo.” We interviewed her at the opening reception of the exhibition (24.04.2006). In our videocast, she speaks of her connection with Frida Kahlo as follows: “Frida Kahlo spoke of her suffering. I capture it and transform it into a homage to her. All my stars speak of the suffering of women in the world - in France as well as in Poland, and thus in Europe…”
The closing reception of this exhibition will take place on Friday 28.04.2006 at 16:00, at Galeria Miejska (ul. Kiełbaśnicza 28).

The final video podcast episode from “Journées de la Francophonie” brings you the performance of “La leçon” of E.Ionesco by the ARKA theatre on 26.03.2006. The one of three actors in the play - Alexandre Marquézy - is from France and here plays his role in French, while two others mix Polish and French in their dialogue. We spoke with him and asked about the difference that he sees in Polish and French theatres and the experience of working in this hybrid theatre group.

As one of the key performances of “Journées de la Francophonie,” the concert of Fun Carmen took place on 25.03.2006 at RURA Jazz Club. This multi-instrumentalist female trio from Lyon, France, played a music that crosses between existing genres with a masterful syncretism. The result was a unique mixture of originality and familiarity, and it was here carried out with energy and big smiles. In our interview, we asked Fun Carmen how they see their own music and where it comes from.

Brand New World @ KAN

On 31.03.2006, Ewan Jones-Morris and Andrzej Wojcik came to present their documentary film - “Brand New World,” or “BNW” - at ATOM cinema. Ewan is based in Cardiff, Wales, while Andrzej is from Kielce. When putting them together, the result is a documentary with a critical view on consumer society.
It’s already rare to see a projection of a hard-edged “social” film by young film-makers in Wrocław, and the BNW came out of nowhere (somewhere between UK and PL, says the production note) and took us by surprise. And it was a good surprise. We interviewed them how (& also where) they came up with the project and how it was shaped to its final form.

If you missed the projection on 31.03.2006, “BNW” will be presented at the KAN film festival for competition. The KAN (Festiwal Kina Amatorskiego i Niezależnego) will take place 06.04.2006 - 09.04.2006 at the WARSZAWA cinema, Wrocław)

TANGO SUMO - Premier Round

On 23rd and 24th March, 2006, the main hall of NOT (ul. Piłsudskiego 74) hosted the performance - “Prermier Round” - by the group TANGO SUMO. This performane was organized as one of the key performing art events of this year’s Journées de la Francophonie. It was a particularly unique event in this festival: while the latter celebrates the unity of “Francophonie” around the French language, TANGO SUMO delivered a “physical” performance without words .

On 10.03.2006, Friday, at the opening of “States of Emergency Embassy” (an installation), we asked Robert B. Lisek about what his work is about and also the idea behind the “Fundamental Research Lab” - an international artist collective that Lisek takes part in. The presentation - “Hacktivism, tactical media” - is part of this ongoing exhibition.
The exhibition is open till 22.03.2006 (Wednesday)

SEE is a online and physical infrastructure which deals with spying on data and codes in the www space and which provides a frame for reflection about problems of domination and treatment in the complex urban environment. The embassy renders consular services and organizes courses of cryptography. The SEE project is based on the prototypical software and on the flexible database FLOAT, created by Robert B. Lisek in cooperation with Harvestworks Media Art Center and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York.

“We treat our software as a weapon, as a conceptual vehicle to explore issues of domination and compulsion in the physical and digital space.” - Fundamental Research Lab

“What is fundamentally different about Float, as opposed to other systems, is that its document database is not a static entity, which sits there passively waiting for queries to set it into motion. Instead, it is constantly refining its structure.” - New York Times

This is the continuation of the cycle of actions realized in downtown Manhattan and Wall street, focused on the problems of cutting and controlling physical and digital space, barrage systems, firewalls and Wall street itself as a most powerful symbol of American economic dominance.

On the 3rd day of the film marathon - and for the contestants, the 3rd day without sleep - the stress begins to be felt: the contestants have become more nervous, irritable or emotionally insecure. The organizers are still keeping the event under control.

One contestant lost consciousness around 11AM and was taken out by the medical staff to the emergency room. The general mood remains still tense, and the stress is visible. The projection is now running 90min ahead of the published schedule due to the same “technical problem” as the day before.

13:00 - 29 contestants remaining / 28 contestants eliminated. The film projection itself continues without any further incident. The “long” films (i.e., more than 2 hours) have been replaced by other films from the backup selections, but most of the films are the same as the ones originally scheduled. The projection is now running approx. 16min ahead of the printed schedule.

Atom Film Marathon - Day 1

On Monday, 20.02.06, at 10:00AM, the challenge finally started. We interviewed some participants about where they came from and how they prepared themselves for this film marathon. We also spoke with Maciek and Ola from WroFilm - the organizers of the film marathon - at the moment when the challenge began.

09:40 - 49 contestants remaining / 8 contestants eliminated. There was a talk of a “technical problem” earlier in the morning (to be clarified later on). At this moment, the films are projected 20min ahead of the published schedule.

11:30 - 48 contestants remaining / 9 contestants eliminated. More details about the “technical problem”: it seems that the distributor who provided the films in digital format either did not do “good compression” of the films or did the “wrong compression” (more info coming later today). Whatever was the case, some time in the morning, it appears that the film suddenly stopped and, then, 4 contestants left the cinema, believing that the projection would not continue. At this moment, with the fear of encountering another “technical problem,” the organizers are projecting relatively “shorter” films, instead of “very long” films, and also from the backup stock of films. The projection is no longer following the published schedule (at this moment, they are projecting “Dancer in the Dark” by Lars von Trier). We will get more updates later today.

15:00 - 47 contestants remaining / 10 contestants eliminated. The “technical problem” still exists but the organizers are doing their best to stick to the published schedule. They are also trying to re-synchronize the projections to the published schedule (the projection was still 20 min ahead of schedule). The details about this “technical problem” will be published in our next video podcast.

The Magic of Carpathians

After the concert at Firlej on 19.01.06, we met The Magic Carpathians Project and asked about their music and their evolution as a project. Here is what we found out:

It is “Magic” because they play hundreds of peculiar-looking ethnic instruments with a fantastic and peculiar sound. It is “Carpathian” because Anna Nacher and Marek Styczynski take their inspiration from traditional Carpathian mountain culture and environment.
They combine the sound of their various traditional instruments played by Marek with Anna’s electric guitar and powerful throat singing. The final product is “pretty wild,” says Anna, “We improvise a lot, so the music is always different.”
During their cooperation, which started in 1998, The Magic Carpathians Project has shifted away from folk-inspired world music towards more improvisational and experimental, even meditational sounds.

La Luz !

La Luz is a newly opened international café & winebar in the wine-tower from the 13th century. Many of the locals have known this wine-tower as “Baszta” for many years.

Conveniently located between Rynek and Ostrów Tumski, the fine art academy and the university main building, and also between the Radisson Hotel and the city center, La Luz offers an ideal location for relaxation. Its specialities are the collection of affordable wine, authentic (as opposed to “Polish-style”) Mexican dishes, the eclectic collection of music (world music, jazz, reggae, blues, Cuban, salsa, tango, ambiance etc.), and, finally, the moody lightings, all of which are carefully arranged by Frederick Abrams, its owner and the multi-media artist.

In our interview, Frederick Abrams talks about how it all started and where it is heading.

Friday 27.01.2006 - Entropia Gallery hosted an one-day-only installation by Maria Zuba. We interviewed the artist about the presented work and an idea behind it. We also spoke with Mariusz Jodko - the director of Entropia Gallery - about the gallery.

Additional video footage “co to jest pasztet?” was provided by M. Zuba.

The local electronica orchestra “Digit-All-love” (http://digit-all-love.com) had a debut concert on 18.01.06, Wednesday, at Bezsenność, Wrocław.
The venue was completely packed, and the interested audience took seat in front of the main stage, as it were in cinema, everyone facing the stage.
After the concert, we asked MaciekZ, who is behind the development of the band, his impression of the first concert and also about the band and its history. The interview was conducted in English.

“the music was written especially for this movie to play it live 1,5 year ago
at the festival of silent movie in warsaw.
from that time the band played it only 3 times.
music is written and played as a soundtrack. not as a band’s performance
with movie presented on a screen abowe.
band will perform staying both sides of stage in front of the screen. there
are no stage lights to focus not on watching the band but the movie.
that’s the idea.”
