Where are the quality jobs? What defines a good job these days? This week is a special podcast recorded from CBC's radio show The Current. Host Anna Maria Tremonti, Laurell Ritchie National Representative from the Canadian Auto Workers, and myself
discussed the state of employment in the Canadian marketplace at this time.

The good news is that we are seeing a measure of confidence returning to the employment market. Benjamin Tal shared in the most recent Canadian Employment Quality Index that employment showed a modest gain, however employment quality actually dropped 3.8 per cent. Self-employment has surged by three per cent over the past six months vs. a 0.5 per cent decline in paid employment. I am hearing from a number of HR managers and recruiters that they are now starting to hire again, the lead in the start of a recovery is the hiring of more professionals on contract (hence why the quality index has dropped). Once the market has fully stabilized you will see more full-time hiring. On a very positive note, Eric Schmidt CEO of Google shared at a speech of the Association of National Advertisers last week "We know we have begun the recovery because searches for terms like "restaurants" and "dancing" are increasing. I think we should be optimistic"

Do you feel like you are in career handcuffs (even if they are golden)? How do you find something you can truly call your own? This week's podcast is with Jesse Brown, host of TVO's Search Engine and co-founder of Bitstrips a comic creation website. Bitstrips was recently chosen by The Ontario Ministry of Education to help over 2 million children improve their reading and writing skills through the creation of personal comics strips with their interactive website.

Jesse has spent the last number of years trying out different roles with a variety of media organizations such as TVO and the CBC. Like many professionals his career has been very nonlinear. I thought that Jesse's career advice was very practical "find a little time to do the thing you love best, see how it goes. If it starts to work that is a good sign you are on the right path" Don't quit your day-job with the internet and flexible work situations, it has never been easier to moonlight from your home office and favorite coffee shop.

This week's podcast is with Albert J. Bernstein Ph.D author of the book (surprise) Am I the only SANE ONE working here? Bernie is a psychologist, best selling author and leading expert in workplace conflict resolution. This book came about after years of research working with organizations and individual clients. It was particularily spurred on by the conversations between Albert and his daughter upon her graduation and the start of her professional role. She was profoundly confused about how many of her peers and boss's responded within the work environment.

Albert shared, "when dealing with a micro-managing boss or peer, the most important thing to keep your sanity is to stop and think. It is best to analyze before you judge, this will give you the information that will help you, or at the very least keep you sane.

Have you been counting down the hours till work, fresh from your thanksgiving dinner(s), full of turkey & stuffing, relaxed by red wine and sweetened by pumpkin pie (not that you need it) This week's podcast is with Michael Bunger Stanier author of Find Your Great Work. Michael shared there are three types of work; great, good and bad. Great work is when we are stretching ourself and in the flow, good work is comfortable and bad work is as Michael stated when we say "This is not signed up for when I accepted this role"
How much of your career is in the great work category? The great news, our goal is not to be doing great work all the time. The aim is to journey towards finding a healthy balance in the three types of work.

Ever wonder how to market yourself better? When do you stop trying? This weeksâs podcast is with Terry O'Reilly a leader in the Canadian advertising industry, the man behind the popular CBC series The Age of Persuasion and the winner of over 400 national and international marketing awards.

This morning is brought to you by the number, 60. Terry graduated from Ryersonâs RTA program and sent out 60 resumes to 60 advertising agencies the results - 60 rejection letters (those were the days they actually let you know!) He eventually got hired at a small radio station in Burlington, and ended up working for an advertising agency 3 years later.

In a world full of choices, Terry has used his passion and persuasive abilities to get you and I to notice and select his clients products and services, over the many options we have as consumers. His successful advertising career has been built upon the same three factors that successful marketing campaigns are built upon. Persistence, persuasion and being authentic. Terry shared â a brand needs to live up to its promise- of actually being everything it says it isâ

Want to stand out â This week remember the career success recipe. Persistence x persuasion x authenticity = Great results. Are you planning to work internationally? Are you a recent immigrant to Canada? This weekâs podcast is with William Jans, international photographer (the official Canadian photographer of the Dalai Lama) and producer of some of the most interesting live travel shows that you will ever experience. I asked him to share some of the lessons he has learned working in such places as China, Tanzania and Peru and how they have helped him to develop his career and have a global opportunities and options.

I have been thinking of this topic for a number of years, it specifically came to light this past week with conversations that I had with two clients, one who had worked internationally, the other who had recently immigrated to Canada. Both shared some of the cross-cultural benefits and challenges they have experienced. In fact a key way to fast track your career is by gaining international experience. A 2003 study conducted of 100 human resource managers and directors found that employers consider that candidates who studied or worked abroad are likely to possess strong interpersonal skills (Doorbar, 2003). William shared the benefits of his global experience âI had to go through a learning curve to adapt to different countries, by adapting I have made more friends, been more successful and had way more funâ

Looking for a great cultural experience without having to leave your city. We have are doing a draw for a number of 10 pairs of tickets to his shows, in Toronto, Ottawa & Montreal. http://www.wrjphoto.com/show-other-contests.html.

Are you successful? Ok, feel free to take another sip of coffee as you ponder that light question. In my coaching practice, one of the key challenges clients face is finding their answer to this question. This week's podcast is with Richard St. John best selling author of 8 To Be Great. Richard interviewed over 500 of the most successful people in the world including Harry Rosen, Robert Munsch, and Rick Mercer. I first heard Richard speak at a TED conference.

He wrote this book based upon an incident that happened over 10 years ago while sitting on a plane. A teenage girl sitting beside him asked, "Are you successful?" His answer was "No, not really." This is from person who is a millionaire, has climbed two of the highest mountains in the world, and runs an award-winning marketing company. Her second question was the key question: "What really leads to success?" Richard said, "Sorry, I don't know. Somehow I just did it." These questions led him on a ten-year journey to learn from others about what really leads to success. Through this research, he identified 8 traits that lead to success which are consistently found in successful people.

This week, spend some time pondering what really leads to your success. Sit back, relax and learn!

Have you recently made an error and regretted it? I just did. Take a look at how I spelled "mourning." It should be morning (although this could be a play on words for you!) This normally wouldn't be picked up by spell-check and you would probably wonder why this wasn't picked up by me either. This week's podcast is with Craig Silverman, journalist and author of Regret the Error.

We have all made mistakes. Some are small, such as the spelling mistake that that I used in my example. Other mistakes, such as choosing the wrong role, or a misunderstanding with your boss, could have a much greater impact on your professional life. Craig shared "You will make mistakes in your life - it is important to understand the root cause. Your recovery from them is the key." In my interview, Craig also shared some really great advice to help you with the "recovery" phase.

This week, see your mistakes as opportunities to improve, rather than as reasons to feel bad.

I can contribute the idea of interviewing a book designer by a question that my daughter asked recently "Dad, which book do you think is a better book?" What is the difference in the actions, and attitudes between the two groups? This week's podcast is with Lyman MacInnis author of How to Succeed in Anything by Really Trying I have to say, this was one of my all time favorite book titles. I found out about this book through a reference from one of my clients (thanks Jim) Lyman has been a senior partner for over 30 years with an international accounting firm and works with a number of highly successful professionals. He has written his book based upon his observations about those who get breakthrough success while others struggle (hint, it isn't about the economy) The more I digested the title of his book, the more this book's title impacted me. As I thought about times when I have been successful personally or professionally, it was the difference between trying and really trying. I here from many people, "I tried" the real difference between those that achieve their goals and those that don't- Those that achieve their goals really try!

I have a few favorites, one of them is a picture of an igloo with the caption "The Canadian White House" We usually wear t-shirts either because we identify with the cause, brand or idea and we want to share this with the world. This week's podcast is with Jeff Woodrow: Jeff is the founder of the Joy T-Shirt Project. I heard about Jeff's story on a CBC radio program, he was also on The Hour with George Stroumboupoulos. One day while staring out the window of his office at his previous job Jeff realized "I worked really really hard to get here, only to discover that I am using my creativity and energy for a project I didn't believe in. I found myself asking what do I want to do with my time here?"

Jeff had an idea. He promptly got up from his desk and resigned. Now Jeff spends his days making t-shirts and selling his t-shirts across the globe, while trying to promote peace and equality on a global scale. This project has been traveling virally right across the planet, you can see some of his work at his site. This may sound unrealistic however, when you have the courage to start asking the right questions you would be surprised how this can help clarify what to do with your career.

Where did you learn to do an effective job search campaign? This week's podcast is with Cathy Keates M.A. author of Not For Sale - Why We Need a New Job Search Mindset Cathy has been a career counselor for over 10 years, and currently works at Queen's University in career services. One common thing that she has observed working with young professionals is, "job search is not an activity we are born knowing about - it is something that we have to learn about". I think Cathy's advice has never been truer. I have noticed that some people feel guilty, for reaching out to receive professional support and advice in their career. Like your own profession there are new tools and competitors entering into the market on a continual basis. If you don't keep up you and/or your company will fall behind. Job search is constantly evolving; consider the role of twitter and sites such as LinkedIn. My role is to share best practices and advise you on how to take advantage of these changes, and make better career decisions.

I am pleased to announce that CareerJoy, has been chosen as the exclusive provider of career services to Queens Alumni. We are offering a 15% discount to all Queens Alumni for our services. When I ask this question in our weekly tele-WORKshop one of the most popular answers is, "for the money". This week's podcast is with Gail Vaz-Oxlade host of the popular TV show Till Debt Do Us Part. Gail is one of Canada's leading experts on money and it's impact on our health, relationships and career choices. On her TV show and website, she provides information and tools to help you take back control over your finances, and your life. She is also the author of numerous books including A Woman of Independent Means.

One of the major questions in the work I do, is how to find the right balance between lifestyle and a career path? Gail shared "a majority of people work for money" This is contrasted with Ipsos-Reid poll of professionals which showed, that money was ranked 4th in what satisfied them in their career. I got to know Gail as a guest expert on her show, working with one of the couples around their career options. This couple wanted to find the best career choice that would enable them to engaged in their work while balancing the economic reality of their lives. In each situation Gail empowers people on her show with three simple elements. A smart game plan, a clear set of goals and objective and expert support. These three elements when applied consistantly, work almost 100% of the time.

Why do some people do well in interviews, while others who are equally or more qualified don't get the job? I would like to suggest that the person who got the position might have had the benefit of interview coaching.

This week's podcast is with Frances Cole Jones, a leading media training consultant, and best selling author of "How to Wow - Proven Strategies for Selling Your [Brilliant] Self in Any Situation". Frances works with numerous executives and experts, helping them to communicate more effectively in crisis situations. He has been featured on shows such as Oprah.

Frances shared, "The most important word in the interview is 'you'". The person interviewing is thinking primarily of themselves. Referring to them by first name, or bringing the conversation back to them, are key strategies in creating a positive impression of yourself. The paradox of the job interview is that it isn't about you, it is about the managers' career and the company's needs. We live in the world of twitter, facebook and Youtube. Those who. know their stuff AND, know to communicate are the ones standing out from the crowd and getting the opportunities.

This week, check out our interview coaching video on YouTube.

Do you rely on books, friends or the internet? All of those are good places, however the best advice comes directly from mentors. This week's podcast is with Debi Rosati C.A. ICD.D. who is a Corporate Director on a number of boards including, Sears Canada and The Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corporation. A former Venture Capitalist and CFO, she shares the benefit of getting an external, objective and professional perspective when it comes to managing a company. I love the saying "don't believe everything you think" We are too close to many of the big decisions to see them objectively, that is why well run companies have people like Debi on their board.

When it comes to managing your career, who's on your personal Board of Directors? I have heard from many professionals who made poor decisions with no input, or have gotten advice from those whom were biased, nor qualified to help. According to a recent study conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a full 96 per cent of HR professionals agree that hiring a career coach delivers tangible benefits to individuals and organizations alike. So whether you need help drafting a professional resume, securing a promotion, switching jobs, or any other career-related move, I am here to help.

This week, reach outside your circle to ask the right questions to the right people.

With the amount of negative news it would seem like there is very few areas of the economy with needs. Ironically, there has never been more challenges. In the world around you, professionals and organizations are always looking for the next Ipod, Google, medical miracle or oil project. This week's podcast is with Gad Shaanan. He is one of Canada's most successful industrial designers. His firm just won the equivalent of an Oscar within his field - a best of 2007 I.D. award for packaging with his work on the new WD-40 can. Gad said âevery single day, thousands of new products and companies are created in the world by professionals who are not waiting for permission from the marketâ. From reinventing what we have, to coming up with a brand new widget. The world is not a static place, which is what makes this time in our career so exciting. What are you waiting for?

This week, consider what needs "fixing" in your world, who knows the opportunity could be sitting in your garage.

This week's podcast is with Steve Maich and Lianne George, authors of The Ego Boom - Why the world really does revolve around you. I found their book provided interesting research and insight about why we struggle with finding the right fit in our personal and professional lives. The paradox is the world has never seemed more about us, yet many are lonely, unsatisfied, and not sure of their identity and place in this world. There are all kind companies providing products and services that are addressing the issue of identity.

The answer lies with knowing, accepting and being true to our own identity. Not allowing a brands, companies, or even job titles to define. You.

How do employers react to you being nervous? This week's podcast is from my conversation this past week with George Stroumboulopoulos, host of The Hour on CBC television. George has spent his entire professional career interviewing a wide range of interesting guests. I was invited to be a guest on his program to talk about the current state of the job market in Canada. One of the questions he asked me "are you nervous?" My honest response was "yes", this program is shot before a live audience, and it is the most popular show in Canada, most rational people would be somewhat nervous. After my honest response immediately, I could sense the connection with the audience and George move to a more authentic and personal level. People relate to you when you let your guard down. There were two reminders to me as I pondered this experience, and how it relates to any interview situation.
1. Answer honestly and people will like and trust you more.
2. Being nervous is not a bad thing, it keeps you sharp and humble.

In a recent study conducted, 44 recruiters were asked to interview 210 candidates for various positions. In other words, the candidates who could answer, why should I hire you? In the most confident and clear way, were 5 times more likely to be hired over the most qualified candidate.

Do you wonder what other careers might be suited for your education and experience? This week's podcast is with Susan Basalla, Ph.D., co-author of So What are you going to do with that?. This book was written out of her own journey questioning what to do with a Ph.D. in English from Princeton University. Having decided not to pursue an academic career, she asked the question, "So what am I supposed to do now?"

Due to a change in your employment situation, or through recognizing that you need a change in the direction of your career, you may be asking the same question. The good news is that every year approximately 10% of professionals switch careers or sectors. Don't underestimate the economy and your ability to move in an entirely different direction. As Susan said, "Strong, independent thinkers can't help but carving out interesting careers."
