By the time my course had ended, they had helped me find a job and negotiate my contract to teach at a private academy (hagwon) in Korea. I have been here for now for almost five months and have gotten to see some of the interesting things Korea has to offer. For work, I begin teaching at 2:30 in the afternoon and teach until 9:30 at night. The kids range from ages 8-13, and I never have more than 13 students in a classroom. I teach listening, reading, writing, phonics, grammar, and vocabulary. I have about 7 months left on my contract, so I am hoping to experience much more of what Korea has to offer, and I am working on learning to read and write the Korean alphabet. After my contract, I'm not sure where I will go. I might try teaching in a totally different country, who knows?"

During the worst economy since the Great Depression, the roof fell in on December 29 at a Rosauers in the Spokane, Wash., area. Instead of laying off the store's 120 employees during the four-month roof repair project, Jeff Philipps, class of 1977, who is president and CEO of Rosauers Supermarkets, along with his management team, decided not to do the practical thing but to do the right thing for their workers. They relocated some to other stores and paid 90 percent of salaries, plus health benefits, for all 120. Philipps is serving as this year's "Pacesetter" chair for the Spokane County United Way fund campaign. He recently shared with the media some of his childhood experiences that inspired him to save jobs, and how his 120 grateful employees are now "paying it forward" through extreme generosity to United Way. See the story and his "Wise Words for Troubled Times" here: http://www.spokesman.com/

Adrian Soucek, class of 2005, now lives in Seattle, Wash., where she works as the development manager for the Seattle Chinese Garden Society (http://www.seattlechinesegarden.org).

Thomas E. "Tommy" Rodgers, who attended Carroll in 1947-50, of Glasgow, Mont. (and most recently of Great Falls, Mont.), died on October 3, 2009. After attending Carroll College and the University of Washington, he established a number of Glasgow businesses. For more on his life, read: http://billingsgazette.com/

Gloria Huse (left), class of 1963, of Sidney, Mont., died on Sept. 24, 2009. After earning her Carroll nursing degree, she worked at the Great Falls Deaconess Hospital as an emergency room and surgical nurse. Gloria became head of the surgical nursing department before returning to Sidney in 1972. She worked as an RN at the Sidney Memorial Hospital and the extended care facility, then devoted herself to the family farm she shared with her husband. What's more: since he also had earned an S.T.L. a few years ago, the Leuven university also awarded him a new ecclesiastical doctorate, the S.T.D. In all, Matz holds three doctoral degrees: his first Ph.D. in early Christian studies from Saint Louis University, followed by last week's Ph.D. in social ethics from K. U. Leuven and the concurrent ecclesiastical degree in Catholic theology from the Faculty of Theology at the K.U.Leuven, issued on behalf of the Vatican. He may be the first Carroll faculty member to hold three doctorates. Dr. Dr. Dr. Matz tells QNS, "What is interesting here, in fact, is that I am not Catholic, and so it is unusual that I would have been able to earn this degree at all." Lots more on his application of his theological studies to real-world economic and political issues is available for perusal in the press release online: http://www.carroll.edu/

Associate Professor of Theology Christopher Fuller has published a chapter titled, "The Magi Story through the Eyes of Pasolini: A Bakhtinian Reading," in the recently published New Perspectives on the Nativity (New York: T&T Clark, 2009).

Carroll Associate Professor of Education and champion racewalker Dr. Jonathan Matthews is mentioned in a recent AARP article involving his favorite sport, available to read here: http://bulletin.aarp.org/

After attending Mount Saint Charles College in 1935, he graduated from Notre Dame, where he played football, with an undergraduate degree in 1940 and a law degree in 1946. He was widely known and revered as the dean of the University of Montana School of Law for 25 years and a professor of oil and gas law. He received the Carroll Borromeo Award in 1961 and an honorary doctorate from Carroll in 1965.
Bill Herbolich, class of 1997, and his wife Heidi are putting together a remembrance book for Evan and Layne Pentecost, the children of Char (Helmick) Pentecost, history class of 1993, and her husband Karl, who died on June 24, 2009. The Herbolich family asks the Carroll family to send in stories about Char and Karl that will be included in the book. Memories that would be most helpful to the project could be your reflections about how you met Karl or Char, stories the couple told about their lives and about their children, any celebrations or holidays you spent with the Pentecosts, and what you would like the Pentecost boys to know about their parents. If you have memories to share for this book, send them to: Heidi Herbolich, 4610 Freedom Drive, Helena, MT 59602 or email them to: heidi4077 -is-at- bresnan -dot- net. You can also call in your stories at 406-459-6334.
