The Chicago-Kent chapter of the Order of the Coif inducted 30 new members during award ceremonies at the Hotel Allegro on October 23. The Order of the Coif is a national legal honor society that recognizes superior scholarship and promotes the ethical standards of the legal profession.

Chicago-Kent to compete in Tournament of Champions

Chicago-Kent College of Law is one of only 16 law schools to be invited to compete in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy's Tournament of Champions taking place October 28 to 31 at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. This is the third consecutive year and the eighth time in the history of the competition that Chicago-Kent has been invited to participate.

Scott M. Matheson, Jr., wins 2009 Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize

Presidential Constitutionalism in Perilous Times by University of Utah professor Scott M. Matheson, Jr., has won the 2009 Chicago-Kent College of Law/Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize. The prize recognizes an exemplary work of scholarship exploring the tension between civil liberties and national security in contemporary American society. Professor Matheson will present his work at Chicago-Kent on November 20.

Students enrolled in Chicago-Kent's Seventh Circuit Review Honors Seminar during the spring 2009 semester wrote and edited the articles that appear in the latest issue of the Seventh Circuit Review. Chicago-Kent and Lake Forest College to offer accelerated dual-degree program

Chicago-Kent and Lake Forest College have announced the establishment of an accelerated degree program that will allow Lake Forest students to complete a bachelor's degree and a law degree in six years -- one year ahead of the average time required to earn both degrees.

Chicago-Kent College of Law has established the Center for Open Government, an initiative to help ensure transparency, accountability and responsibility in state and local government. Housed in the Chicago-Kent Law Offices as part of the school's clinical education program, the Center will focus on pro bono cases challenging closed government processes under the Illinois Open Meetings Act, the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, and similar statutes.

Chicago-Kent welcomes 2009 Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars

A diverse group of 25 undergraduate students, all interested in legal careers, is participating in a special four-week summer session at Chicago-Kent. The law school is hosting the Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program, which is designed to provide current college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors exposure to the rigors of law school and contact with legal professionals. This is the eighth consecutive summer Chicago-Kent has offered the program, which runs from June 1 through June 26.

Thirty-five Chicago-Kent alumni sworn in to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar

Thirty-five Chicago-Kent College of Law graduates were admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court on April 6. The induction ceremony was conducted by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., who administered the oath to the group. Associate Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, David Souter, Clarence Thomas and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were also present.

Chicago-Kent takes first place in Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition

For the second consecutive year, Chicago-Kent College of Law is the winner of the Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition. Students Jocelyn Floyd and Marni Zaideman successfully defended the law school's championship and won the Best Respondent's Brief Award at the annual competition, held March 27 to 29 at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. A second Chicago-Kent team won the competition's Best Practitioner's Brief Award.

The Chicago-Kent team of Erin Duncomb, Amanda Hillmann and Allison Sues has advanced to the national finals of the American Bar Association's National Appellate Advocacy Competition after prevailing in the regional tournament in Boston. This is the second time in three years that a Chicago-Kent team has advanced to the tournament's finals, which will be held April 2 to 4 in Chicago.

Illinois Appellate Court Justice Warren D. Wolfson, founder and director of Chicago-Kent's award-winning Trial Advocacy Program, has received a lifetime achievement award from the Center for Excellence in Advocacy at Stetson University College of Law. The award was presented March 5 at Stetson's second national advocacy conference in Gulfport, Florida.

Yale Law School professor William N. Eskridge Jr. has been named Chicago-Kent College of Law's Centennial Visitor for 2009. Professor Eskridge will deliver the 2009 Centennial Lecture, "Administrative Constitutionalism," March 4. On March 6, Professor Eskridge will participate in a forum on same-sex marriage. Both events are free and open to the public. Reservations are requested.

Chicago-Kent wins Midwest regional championship of the National Trial Competition for third consecutive year

For the third consecutive year, Chicago-Kent College of Law is the winner of the Region 8 championship of the National Trial Competition, the premier trial advocacy tournament in the United States. The winning Chicago-Kent team of Matthew Casey, Sulema Medrano, and Brian Wojcicki defeated teams from Northwestern, University of Illinois, Notre Dame and Loyola University Chicago to prevail in the regional contest held February 6 to 8 in Chicago.

Chicago-Kent wins 59th annual National Moot Court Competition

For the second consecutive year, Chicago-Kent College of Law is the winner of the National Moot Court Competition, the largest appellate advocacy tournament in the United States. Chicago-Kent students Andrew Booth, Brody Dawson and Betsy Gates claimed the 2009 title after defeating the University of Pennsylvania Law School in the final round of the contest held February 2 to 5 in New York.
