Righteous Declarations for Humans – Postcard #44

Part 5 of the White Poppies for Remembrance series continues with Dave at Victory Park, this time reading the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (adopted by General Assembly Dec. 10th 1948) with riffs on tolerance, human relations, common understanding and mutual respect, including a healthy sampling of articles on brotherhood, privacy, special treatment for mothers plus a commentary about refugee status and the illegal nature of torture and humiliating treatment.

Then brings it ’round home with a snippet from H.D. Thoreau’s Walden about sovereign man being the origin of the political state while accompanied by lively jazz (via bootleg cassette) featuring Joe Williamson and cohorts in Banff from way back playing about Peace to the Children of our Universe and Common Market offering up replinishing Refresh (ment) live on KEXP.

Pondering Flanders at the Cenotaph - Postcard#43

Finding Victory Park cenotaph in post-ceremony calm, Dave settles onto a bench for lost sailors with some bagpipers to chat about John Macrae’s Flander’s Field poem and mull the tension between remembering noble effort and embracing jingoistic behavior. This conundrum is evident in snippets of an essay by Stephen Osborne – The Poem and the Poppy – which relates the amazing grace of drinking gin with Gramps who was there – ‘in the void.’

Then, in the woodshed, Dave tells a story about a blissful moment of time in Peliliu, Palau – where under the southern cross, everything stopped – while lambs, dogs, rams and a dead chicken go about their lives, seemingly unaware of the literature spieling or the-soon-to-blossom magnolia tree.

Buena Joint with the Lucky Bastard – Choogle on #33

Aspiring actor and noted carouser O-dawg tells Uncle Weed about his hi-jinks starring in a French reality TV show called “The Lucky Bastard.” He recounts the production foibles, drunken debacles and beach fire exploits of hanging out with African immigrants, smoking hash and scoring with international lassies at the bar and spreads rumours of a existing video tape.

Then, after rollling a joint of outdoor Mendicino Sunshine and Mango in fascinating clear cellulose papers, they head up to San Francisco’s historic Buena Vista Park to dig the view, roast out and continue the story about security nonsense and NYC funtime.

Clubside Breakfast Time Episode #49 – Lazy, Rainy Tuesday at the Fishbowl Brewpub

First, here a few pictures I took in Olympia this morning before heading over to the Fishbowl Brewpub to meet Damien, and have some fine Olympia seafood. (I had the Smoked Salmon Sandwich [mit frites], and Damien had the Cod fish Tacos.)

After ordering our repast, we fired up the laptop and started recording, and here’s a synopsis of the show!

First, we chit-chat about the garage cum micro-brewery restaurant complex that houses the Fishtale Brewpub, with a shoutout to Caveman Jim Skutt, who’s vision and labor created the wood-fired pizza oven that is now in Sorrento’s Italian Restaurant. We also mention the brutal weather change that Olympia has undergone in the last few weeks, (with torrential rains, stormy winds, and at least one loud clap of thunder that woke everyone up at 3:00 AM a few days ago, due to the loudness and length of the booming.)

Laughing Buddha, Chocomel and Belgian Hash – Choogle on #27

Slightly past 4:20, Uncle Weed and amigo Cousin Herb roll up fat doob of sticky Sativa in a Vancouver park and talk about Herb’s recent trip to Netherlands and Belgium.

Weed recounts a few of his exploits in the low-lands (as a backpacker in 1992, a Cannabis Cup judge in 2002 and passing through in 2005). They talk about Barney’s killer breakfast and award worthy ganja, fave coffee shops, the Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank house, bike rides plus anecdotes about hash-bearing friends in Brussels, great Thai food and addictive Chocomel.
