Richard has, as of this writing, posted over 183 episodes, interviewing, in Chris’ estimation, at least 120 different Kickstarter campaign owners, where they tell him what they tried; what worked, what didn’t, what they might do different next time. Richard has also been a part of more than a dozen Kickstarter campaigns, three of them his own. So, we were thrilled when Richard agreed to come on the show and share with us what steps have proven, time and again, to be the most important for any Kickstarter hopeful to launch a successful campaign.

If you ever choose to launch your own campaign, we highly suggest going and listening to every single episode of his podcast. Seriously.

You may recall several years ago the very last interview we did was with our good friend Cedric Hohnstadt. In this episode Chris, and I jump into the CI time machine and flash forward to today where we catch up with Cedric again after four years. Cedric reveals what he’s been up to for the past four years as well as his top secret formula for an amazingly successful Kickstarter campaign.

What does it take to get a successful Kickstarter campaign off the ground? Is it a lot of work? How can I achieve this kind of greatness? Can anybody have a successful Kickstarter campaign or do you have to know someone? Cedric answers all these questions and more. We’ll answer all these questions and more…

illustrator Cedric Hohnstadt has created a new sketchbook designed to help artists put more life and personality into their drawings.

Some of the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood are based on animated cartoons, comic books, and video games all of which start as drawings and require large teams of artists working behind the scenes to bring them to the screen. The artists who know how to create appealing characters and make entertaining drawings are in hot demand.

The project was successfully funded on Kickstarter.com, where it was featured near the top of the
“Popular” list under Kickstarter’s “Publishing” category (beating out almost 500 other projecdts) and so far has been well received by the creative community. Over 550 people backed the project and the campaign received over 1,700 “likes” on Tumblr.

After a 3 year hiatus, Bob and Chris are producing new episodes of Creative Independence. Both of us have been very busy for the past few years, and we’re both involved in some cool new projects. We’re doing things that go beyond anything we’ve talked out in our shows before. We’ll fill you in on those in a minute, but the point is that we have been working on new projects, learning some really cool stuff, meeting some great folks and are continuing to figure things out as we go, and excited to share what we’ve learned.

Longtime listeners may notice that the websites on our network have recently received an overhaul. Work is ongoing, but coming along nicely. As we’ve prepared to get CI ready for these new episodes, we made the decision to go ahead and spend some time cleaning up our original show, Answers for Freelancers. What we’re going to do is listen to all of them one at a time, and if we feel they should be returned to the feed, we’re giving them a new writeup, appropriate graphics, and dropping them back into the feed. This is a free time project, so it will take a little while to finish.

Note: Answers for Freelancers has its own feed, so you’ll definitely want to subscribe to it directly. Rereleased episodes WILL NOT drop in the main Creative Independence feed.

So, back to those projects we were talking about back in the first paragraph.

Bob has started a new teaching site, http://bobteachesart.com/ where he teaches Adobe Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator online, especially in an illustration setting. He does 1-on-1 training, classes, posts tutorials, and all sorts of other cool things.

Bob is also getting ready to launch a Kickstarter campaign for a series of Children’s books he’s been working on.

Not to be left out, Chris, has been working on some game design projects with his wife and daughter, and they are preparing to launch a Kickstarter campaign in order to print their first game. Check out their website at http://EsmayaAndMe.com/ .

So, this next “maxi-series” of Creative Independence episodes will be focused on Kickstarting your game and book projects. This path isn’t fully mapped out, but we hope you’ll be surprised and delighted as we roll it out. Stick around and see how this turns out at the same time we do.

Bob mentions a recent episode of I Love Marketing’s podcast: http://ilovemarketing.com/episode-119-the-one-about-crowdfunding-with-mike-cline/

Thanks for sticking with us, and its great talking with you all again.
The post CI 401: Kickstarting our Kickstarter Maxi-Series first appeared on Creative Independence.

Bob and I have just released a new episode of Answers for Freelancers. Why? What are we up to? Lots of stuff, and it starts with the archiving and restoration of A4F and continues as we return to Creative Independence.

The post Answers for Freelancers: Re-release first appeared on Creative Independence.

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to let you know that Bob and I have just released a new episode of Answers for Freelancers. No doubt this comes as a surprise to many of you who have been with us from early on. You may remember that in September of 2008 we published our last episode of A4F and moved on to Creative Independence. So, what are we doing back on A4F?

A few months ago, as I was setting up Esmaya and Me, I took some time to really look over the rest of the sites on the CI Network, and to see how much work it would take to bring all of them onto the same template in order to unify their look. A4F needed a LOT of work and Bob and I seriously considered taking the site down permanently. Then we looked at the traffic. The numbers were high enough to prove to us that many people still found the content useful, and we figured with a little updating, it would be even more so. So, we’ve taken the time to fix the site up.

Copious amounts of spit and polish were the obvious initial need. The real question was to figure out what to do with the podcast episodes and written updates. Some are obviously dated. Others, while hinting at their age through references and anecdotes are fairly timeless. So, our solution is this.

First, as I said, we’ve released a new episode, Episode Zero. This new recording is just a very short overview of what a new listener will find in the A4F podcast feed. Since the last episode is generally what a new listener will hear first, Episode Zero is perfectly placed to introduce the show and set expectations.

Second, we pulled every episode from the feed. Bob and I are listening to them one at a time and deciding on whether or not the episode still matters. If it does, we are rewriting the accompanying post and then either creating new art or formatting the existing art to fit the new template. Once these are done, the episode is added back into the feed. While not a herculean effort, this work does take some time and so will likely be spread out at about an episode or two per week until we are finished. So far, the first three episodes have been rereleased. We expect to have the rest that make the cut back into the feed by the end of the year.

Third, while we are updating the art and written content, we are not editing the audio. No director’s cuts here, folks. We are choosing to spend that time on Creative Independence (more on that later). So ignore side references to MySpace, Macromedia, Adobe CS and whatever else no longer exists and just enjoy the nostalgia and the advice that still applies today.

What does this mean for our longtime listeners? Probably not much, but if you haven’t heard these episodes in a few years, why not subscribe to the feed? These won’t appear in your normal CI feed since A4F was split off shortly after we started CI. Go ahead and reinforce some of the timeless principles presented in these episodes while taking a walk down memory lane as interviews with Michael Gerber, Bill Kenney, J.C. Hutchins, Mitch Joel and others are released back into the lineup.

Now that A4F is pretty much back on auto-pilot, we’ll be focusing on Creative Independence. The site is being updated to the new template even as this post goes out and Bob and I are lining up new interviews for the podcast, so stay tuned. Pod on.

In 2000, Drew Gilbert worked at Funnybone Interactive alongside Bob and myself. And like Bob and I, shortly thereafter found himself pounding the pavement looking for freelance work as the economy came to what seemed like a grinding halt. Like most of our contemporaries, we found that work was slim and opportunities for salaried positions far between. And so, like the rest of our pals, we carried on freelancing and making things work the best we could.

That’s where the similarities end, however. For the past decade, Drew and Christine, his wife, have been learning to live the remote life. I’ve been following along online as he has traveled the world, posting his adventures for the world to read and see. From his Tough Guy race in the UK a couple of years back (all I was doing at the time was a wimpy triathlon!) to hopping around the Orient; blog posts, tumbler dumps and most recently, instagram photos.

Why am I bringing all of this up now? Well, Drew and Christine have almost finished their documentary, The Wireless Generation, which is an inside look into the lives of a number of remote living professionals. Folks who have taken the unique opportunity that exists at THIS TIME in the world. An almost unlimited access to online working opportunities, and a powerful enough US dollar to be able to provide the basic necessities of life while travelling and experiencing the world as you go.

Want to see it AND help Drew and Christine out at the same time? Check out their Kickstarter project. The funding is to help out with the final editing costs and with fees associated with a film festival tour they are planning for 2013. Best of all, any pledges valued at $25 or more automatically qualify for a copy of the movie BEFORE its available for purchase. The project ends August 29th (?!? Why the 29th and not the 31st? I have NOOO idea, but that’s the date if you want it.)

I highly recommend it. It should be a great watch.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/almostfearless/the-wireless-generation

Apparently, not only do I recommend it, but so does Mashable:

MC Hammer and Tim Ferriss also threw out some love that can be seen in the kickstarter project’s updates.

General Text Messaging definitions

There are scores of places on the web to find the definitions for this texting shorthand that is developing around short-form messaging, but here’s a decent on to start with:

http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/textmessageabbreviations.asp

Twitter Tags – what do they mean?
@<username> – Use this tag when you want someone <username> to see your post, such as when you’re talking about her or asking her a question.

.@<username> – If you want everyone to see the post regardless of whether or not they follow <username>, don’t start the post w/ @. You can use anything, even a simple period to accomplish this.

D<space><username> – Use this if you want to send a private message to a user.

#<keyword> – Use this if you want a tweet to be picked up by twitter search for a topic.

RT @<username> – Use this when you want to pass a tweet along and want to give credit to the originator.

Twitter Search – http://search.twitter.com/

Setting up email (for MAC)

Go to http://search.twitter.com/set up your search term. Find the RSS feed link. From the options “Subscribe to this feed using” select applications. Under applications find mail. Hit subscribe. Apple mail uses an RSS feeder to send alerts. They’ll show up just like an email.

If you want to have search terms sent directly to an email address there are several 3rd party apps you can use.
If you have a favorite please let us know which one you are using and why you like it.

Setting up rss reader alerts:

The easiest way to follow search results is to add a search column to Tweetdeck or whatever Twitter application that you use. However, on the results page from http://search.twitter.com/, you can grab the RSS Feed link and add it to whatever feed reader you use, such as Google Reader.

Trending Topics

Use trending topics to find out which topics are hot in a specific area. Especially if you use current events to draw attention to your blog, or for inspiration for your comics, art, writing or what have you, trending topics is a great tool to see what might be relevant.

Listed

Dunbar’s Number is a concept that basically states that most people can only handle about 150 people/connections in a single organization before you get too big to really manage. Lists helps you break down a large group of people into more easily manageable sets, and also lets your followers know who’s who in your follower list.

By putting someone in a list, you define why you follow them, and let people know who you feel is worth following in a certain topic. You and your friends can all list each other to help other people find you.

Favorites

Favorite tweets that you or others make that you want to remember or be able to more easily find again. I’ve been told that there is also some Google juice to this, but I’m not entirely sure of that.

Retweeting

When passing along tweets that you particularly like, use the tag RT before a username (for instance – RT @username) to give them credit. Its polite, good web karma, and will keep people from thinking of you as a plagiarizer.

Hey, guys, just a short one this week to keep things moving along in a positive direction while Chris and Bob play Skype Tag.

In this episode, Bob takes a quick breather and Chris steps in to talk about a couple of interesting tools for managing your online social activities.

Avatar Management:
Gravatar (Globally Recognized Avatars) http://gravatar.com/

Comment Management System:
Disqus http://disqus.com/
Cocomment http://cocomment.com/

Not mentioned in the show itself are the differences between Disqus and CoComment that Chris feels are relevant.

“First, Disqus tracks comments based on your email address, but unfortunately, can only track one email per account at this point, so if you use multiple email addresses, like me, you have to open multiple accounts. However, Disqus also does a lot of other things better than Cocomment, such as being able to pull your Avatar from Gravatar, Twitter, Facebook and other places.

“On the other hand, Cocomment uses a Firefox browser plugin instead of email addresses to track comments, so you can track ALL of your comments in one account. However, this means that if you use more than 1 machine regularly (I use 3) you need to install the plugin in all of your machines. Also, the plugin is currently limited to Mozilla-based browsers, like Flock or Firefox, so if you tend to favor another browser, you have to start up Firefox and make the comment from there. Cocomment does have a bookmarklet option for other browsers, but that tends to be a bit more work than I’d want to have to do.”

“I have accounts with both, but I tend to favor Disqus, and simply hope that at some point in the near future, they’ll let me manage all of my email addresses under one account.”

John is an expert in small business marketing. His podcast and blog site have completely changed the way I think about my business and how I market myself. In this episode I talk with John about some of his marketing strategies and about his latest coaching program, Social Media Pro.

I’ve recently completed the course and highly recommend it. John does a fantastic job of presenting the material in an easy to understand step by step lesson plans. Lessons are presented in a video format as well as written content and downloadable PDFs.

As Bob and I continue to roll out the new Creative Independence Network, we’ve reached a point where if we wanted to split the Creative Independence feed from the Answers for Freelancers! feed, that now would be the ideal time to do it. So, we did. Overall, things are looking good. iTunes has updated the feed to not only point to the new location, but the show is also indexed correctly in the iTunes directory. Our new site, also a bit on the bare-walls-and-no-paint side, is also up and functioning.

You may notice that this isn’t a standard WordPress install. Because we have multiple blogs that we want to keep up and running, and because we’d like to add more creatives to the contributors list moving forward, we’ve chosen to go forward with WordPress MU (multi-user). For the most part, it works much like the standard WordPress package, but it has a few differences in the back end. We’ve also installed BuddyPress which will allow us more social media options moving forward, including starting groups, forums and the like as we choose to roll them out.

4 Main Areas of the Creative Independence Network pre-launch (and subject to change):

Creative Independence Podcast (you’re here right now).

Answers for Freelancers (currently archives. Might it continue as a show?!?) – http://answersforfreelancers.creativeindependence.net/

Bob’s CI blog – http://bobostromstudio.creativeindependence.net/

Chris’ “Aithene Multimedia” site http://aithene.creativeindependence.net/

We were also visited briefly by our old friend, Ken Perkins. Actually, he and Bob had been chatting on Skype when Bob called me to record this episode, so, we spent a few minutes just saying ‘hi’ and seeing what Ken was up to. Unfortunately, Ken wasn’t expecting to record, and forgot to use headphones, so you you can hear Bob and Me in the background, which means we couldn’t marry out audio up with Ken’s without getting a wicked echo effect, so we trimmed it down and just used Ken’s audio as it, which explains the quality of the opening.

That being said, if you want to catch up with Ken or see what he’s been working on lately, you can find his portfolio here – http://kenperkinscreative.com/. Its another great example of using Apple’s very simple to use photo gallery’s as a portfolio.

Please let us know if you experience any strangeness with our feed, or if you see any broken or unupdated feed listings on any directories. Thanks!
The post CI 210: Burning a New Feed first appeared on Creative Independence.

Seth Harwood: We had Seth on our show in eps 2-9 and ep 3-1 of Answers for Freelancers! It was a blast interviewing him. Real funny guy and a great writer too

Art and Story: Specifically for those who are into cartooning and comics, but really, for anyone who marries illustration with words to tell stories.

Escape from Illustration Island: Thomas James runs a blog with a number of freelance illustration resources, and his podcast echoes this passion thru interviews of other freelance illustrators.

Hometown Tales: Gene and Brian explore the many tales of the world. From tales that are unique to certain towns to tales that every town seems to think is there’s alone.

Managing the Gray: C.C. Chapman explores the world of new media marketing and PR. This is for those of us who are looking to promote ourselves using these new-fangled new media tools.

Podcast Answer Man: Cliff Ravenscraft of the Generally Speaking Podcast Network (GSPN) shares the knowledge he’s gleamed since 2003 while producing roughly 20 hours of podcast content PER WEEK!

Radio Adventures of Doctor Floyd: Fun for the whole family, join Dr. Floyd, his protege Dr. Grant, and their alien computer companion C.H.I.P.S. as they track the (somewhat) evil Dr. Steve and his sock-shaped assistant Fidgert thru time and space, and foiling his attempts to steal historical artifacts to sell on eBay.

Decoder Ring Theatre: The folks at Decoder Ring Theatre spin their 1930’s radio show inspired stories in 2 main titles; superhero action in The Adventures of the Red Panda, and detective noir thrillers in Black Jack Justice. Also, every summer they release a number of unique tales in their Summer Showcase series.

Podiobooks: A collection of podcast novels for free download.

Philippa Ballantine: A wonderful writer, Philippa has the ability to spin a great story, and then produces a great audio drama to present it. Seriously, I could listen to her read me a technical manual. Actually, that’s not a horrible idea…

This episode, Bob and Chris talk about the business applications of social media: promotion, networking, community and lead generation.

The social media scene is so big that there’s no way we can touch on everything, but we can definitely talk about some of the more relevant types of tools available, and we can certainly list a bunch of them below. The categories below are very general guidelines, especially when you consider that many of the tools really blur the lines and could easily fit into more than one.

Broadcast Media:
If you’re looking to broadcast your ideas or message, its a 1-to-many conversation. Even though your audience can communicate with you through comments and trackbacks, for the most part its a one way medium.

Aggregators:

The bottom line, if you want a certain style of life and your business’ direction doesn’t seem to be getting you there, then we may need to rethink how things are going.

Then moving on, once you have figured out what you want your business to be, the next thing you’ll probably do will be to come up with a name. And of course, once you’ve got a name in mind, you’ll need to making sure its available and that you can get a domain name to match your business. So, using GoDaddy.com as his domain registrar of choice, Bob walks us through the basics of searching for and purchasing your name.

Chris and Bob learn about licensing with artist Tara Reed Tara Reed.

Artist Tara Reed followed a twisting and turning path to where she is today: a mom, an artist who has her own business licensing her art and teaching other artists what licensing is all about and how to do it. An artist by passion and not education – Tara has a degree in Marketing and sold college textbooks after graduating and before starting her family and becoming a stay-at-home mom.

Fast forward 10 years: Tara became a “professional artist” (she considers anyone who make $1 a professional at whatever they do) in 2001 designing papers for the scrapbooking industry.

In 2004 she delved into the wider world of art licensing — at the same time, she was going through a divorce and had to make a decision: take the safer route and get a traditional job with a boss and benefits or continue with her desire to build her own business on her terms.

Some places you can find Tara:

Welcome to the second episode of illustrator Bob Ostrom’s and multimedia designer Chris Wilson’s new show, Creative Independence! The goal of this show is to explore and highlight the many and varied ways that intelligent and creative people are using their talents to create and run businesses that generage income in ways that are fulfilling and often do not include billing for hourly, project or any other pay per work rate.

We hope you enjoy it!

Opening:
Chris and Bob are experiencing technical difficulties with Chris’ audio equipment. Because of this, we’re totally unable to record a skype interview with artist and creator of The Dreamer comic, Lora Innes (http://thedreamercomic.com/).

—–

Bob Makes Headway with Twitter:
At about 5 minutes in, Bob relates a few experiences that he’s had using Twitter, and how he was able to leverage the twitter community to help him thru a tough situation in his work.

Twitterati mentioned include:
http://twitter.com/gcoghill
http://twitter.com/danidraws
http://twitter.com/rachelvalley
http://twitter.com/Mercuralis

Application mentioned for categorizing your twitter network:
http://tweetdeck.com/

Measure your twitter influence:
http://twitter.grader.com/
psst… I’ve gone up to 99.8 since we recorded the show
heed me my freelance warriors. There are worlds to be conquered.

Call for Intros (14:20):
We need intros. Record a short intro. Introduce and pimp yourself; who you are, what you do, where we can find you, and then finish with something like “and you’re listening to Creative Independence with Chris and Bob.” Or “Bob and Chris.” The guy in second billing won’t hold it against you. And as always, just be creative. And try to keep it under 30 seconds.

CI Sketchbook (16:20):
Welcome one and all to the first ever episode of Bob Ostrom’s and Chris Wilson’s new show, Creative Independence! The goal of the show is to explore and highlight the many and varied ways that intelligent and creative people are using their talents to create and run businesses that generate income that does not include billing for hourly, project or any other rate.

We hope you enjoy it!

Opening:
Chris is all over the mic with a cold and Bob apologizes about having completely dissed the twitterverse by accident.

The Content:
First up, at 10 minutes in, Chris starts talking about his and his wife’s first foray into the online sales business, Intelligent Acne Treatment. They operate the IAT website under the business umbrella of their company, Light Therapy Options. Light Therapy Options was the idea of Chris’ wife and its purpose is to educate people on the healthy natural benefits of light, especially sunlight, which for most of the year is a free resource, that can be used to stave off a multitude of diseases from acne to cancer, and where necessary, to make products affordable so that most people are able to purchase them.

This episode is a repost from our classic Answers for Freelancers feed that we felt highly impacted the decision to start Creative Independence. This episode is #9 from the first season.

In episode 8, we interviewed renowned business guru Michael Gerber, who had some very interesting thoughts on the very nature and business viability of freelancing. Michael’s remarks sparked some heated debates between Ken, Bob and Chris. So much so, that even before posting Michael’s interview, we knew we were going to have to follow it up with a discussion of our own on the subject. Are we actually telling you to stop freelancing? Yes! No! Maybe? Listen in and tell us what you think.

We take a hard look at the differences between freelancing and entrepreneurship. How are they fundamentally different? How do you apply Michael’s techniques to either to become more successful? Is one doomed to failure while another is a rocketship heading to the moon? Not necessarily, but until you understand the key features of each, you can’t really start to grow either, or grow beyond where you are now.

Give it a listen and weigh in. All of us, the hosts AND your fellow listeners, are anxious to know what you think. Where do you stand on this idea? Did you like the topic? Would you like to see us continue to offer more of this diverse type of subject matter? Let us know. Shoot us an email, leave a comment below, or drop us some audio using our My Chingo account to the left.

Yup, we know we were a little later than anticipated getting this out, but that just really goes to show the strong feeling we have on this subject. We’re glad you’re still with us.

Pod on. Chris, Bob and Ken
The post A4F Archives: A Follow-up Discussion to our Interview with Michael Gerber, the E-Myth man. first appeared on Creative Independence.

This episode is a repost from our classic Answers for Freelancers feed that we felt highly impacted the decision to start Creative Independence. This episode is #8 from the first season.

Michael Gerber, author, entrepreneur, and acclaimed business consultant, talks to us about what happens when Freelancers are ready to start growing their business into a true company; the kind of business that allows the owner to touch the world in a way that is truly meaningful and allows him the freedom to pursue those interests, both inside and outside of work, that he feels are the most important.

If you have reached a point in your career where you are looking for this kind of growth, then this is an interview you don’t want to miss.

Freelancing is an idea that is full of romance and wonder; doing your own thing, anywhere you want, anytime you want. Traveling the world while creating your art, or working from home while watching your children grow up. Paying the bills when your ‘real job’ disappears. Freelancing presents itself as an ideal solution to many people under various circumstances, and if it didn’t work, people all over the world wouldn’t be doing it.

However, the very nature of freelancing is this: as guns for hire, we only make money when we are producing. This means that eventually, we hit a threshold we cannot pass beyond, since we can only work so many hours, and we can only charge so much. Also, for most of us, as we get older, the number of people we are responsible for providing for keeps increasing. Finally, as creative individuals, most of us have all sorts of projects that we wish we could be working on, but our freelance duties keep us from accomplishing them. How do we move beyond this?

When its time for you to move beyond the pay-per-piece or pay-per-hour world of Freelancing, but you want to continue working as a independent artist, its time to get a fresh perspective on your business and what it will take to truly make the next phase of your career take flight. Our interview with Michael Gerber serves to open the door to this line of thinking, and we hope you will join us as we consider these new ideas.
