Make Love Not War 21st Century Style

Our photogs do a great job capturing the vibe of a live show, but this shot is just ridiculously awesome. Richard Lam of Getty Images caught this couple in the midst of the recent Vancouver riot following a game seven loss to the Boston Bruins. Asked about how he snagged the shot, Lam said:

“It was real brief. What happened was, just before I turned back and looked [toward the couple], I was running down with the mob as the riot police were rushing us down the street. I looked back and saw them on the ground. My initial thought was that she got caught up by the moving police line… I thought she was hurt and someone was helping her out… Right after that there was some guy charging the police line like he was a running back. There was a lot going on, and next thing that happened a mannequin’s arm went flying over my head and it was just chaos.”

It turns out that the woman in the pictured was injured by a shield from a riot policeman and her boyfriend laid down beside her to comfort her. Pretty amazing.

Bonnaroo Images

The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival celebrated it’s 10th anniversary this past weekend. Continuing to make history, Bonnarro hosts a vast array of musical performances from gospel to electronica, a silent disco, comedy, cinema and art from various vendors. A great opportunity for music photos, I selected a few of my favorites.

North Korea’s Pop Music Scene

Who would’ve thought that North Korea has a blossoming pop scene? Well, maybe many people, but I was ignorant of the possibility until I came across Pyongyang Goes Pop, a blog by UK music journalist Alex Hoban. His blog highlights various adventures while documenting the local music scene in North Korea for two months. Read about everything from Hoban being held under house arrest, to Korea’s discovery of Michael Jackson to a socialist music scene sex scandal. A fun and enlightening look at a culture we rarely get a glimpse of.

The following is a video of the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble. They have released 140 albums to date and aren’t about to stop now.

Modern Warfare 2 Meets Metal Gear Solid

What started as a fun side project during early pre-production of a feature film, soon became a massively popular web series. The Beat Down Boogie crew, fronted by All Aces Media founders and DMP veteran filmmakers, Micah Moore and Blake Faucette, have driven gamer mashup geeks wild with their five part mega-series spoofing the characters from the two popular video games that make up the title.

With contributions of filmmakers, graphic designers, photographers (our own lead photographer, Elizabeth Lemon, provides their set photography) and extra after extra from across the Triad and Triangle have contributed to this ground breaking series. Their budget? Good friends and a love for the craft make this puppy go ’round.

My advice? Put aside an hour, prepare to laugh out loud and enjoy!

Matt Hill, On The Floor – BMA Best New Artist Debut

matt hill: on the floor

We put on Matt Hill back in 2009 as the lead of his former band, The Buzzkillz. While most of the songs in his set were covers, which is why his live album will reside on our shelf into perpetuity, it’s obvious that the man is an out of control, old school blues guitar wizard with a whole lot of Elvis’ showmanship.

Tonight, the BMA recognized his talents, hoisting up his debut album, On The Floor, as the best blues debut of the year.

Here’s a taste of Matt from our show a few years back:

R.I.P. Dan “Half-Pint” Parks

UPDATE: The family wishes to have a private memorial service, but public gatherings are springing up in bars and homes all over the Triad and Triangle. I’m sure friends will be dropping by at the Flat tonight (Friday May, 6th) and Tuesday

Dan Parks, aka Half Pint

If you knew Dan, you loved the big guy and knew without a doubt that he loved you back. He was a huge man in so many ways — an über talented musician, an amazingly open heart, an awesome sense of humor… Half-Pint passed away in his sleep earlier today from heart complications. The doctors can tell you what they want, I’m going to my grave believing the damn thing was just too big.

To all the people Dan touched with his wonderful sense of (mostly self-deprecating) humor, be sure to make it out to open mic night at the Flat this upcoming Tuesday night. I’m betting good friends will be there to share stories… and throw back a shot or two of whisky.

Matty Sheets And The Blockheads At The Blind Tiger

If you haven’t been to the new Blind Tiger yet, tomorrow’s your chance! Eclectic and talented Matty Sheets and the Blockheads will be opening for The David Mayfield Parade at 8 p.m. Made up of some of the greatest talent Greensboro has to offer, the Blockheads remind me of water — always shifting and moving, playing with different sounds and members, yet the Blockheads stay cohesive. They are true to themselves and their passion for what they do. I can’t remember having so much fun watching a band before. So come on out, let go and enjoy yourself Thursday night!

Ronnie Levels And Hanging Thread At The Flatiron

Ronnie Levels and one-fourth of his Genius Band and Hanging Thread performed last night at the Flatiron, along with the Raving Knaves. Hanging Thread members Stephen Corbett and Rodney Owen have had several of their projects (The Radials, Project Tritium) documented by the DMP in the past. The reason there are no pictures of the Knaves is because I can’t play bass and push the shutter at the same time.

Secret Message Machine with Senryu

Greensboro’s Secret Message Machine – aka Michael Barrett solo – played the Green Bean last night with Senryu from Knoxville, Tennessee. Despite the sparse crowd, SMM’s ambience-laden songs and Senryu’s indie rock went over quite well.
