Regardless of the Giants sitting at 13 games below .500 going into play Tuesday, they still have a shot at in the beleaguered NL West. Join Lance Williams in the latest edition of 1954 and Counting as he discusses the last few series against the Dodgers and the Cubs. Things haven’t gone the Giants way over the last week and they lost some ground in the NL West. A lot of it can be blamed on a “meltdown” of the bullpen, and inconsistent pitching.

Lance also talks about the return of Barry Bonds, and if the Giants are going to make a serious run in the last few weeks? Regardless what Barry does, they will still need to put together consistent, solid pitching efforts, and Lance doesn’t know if they have quite what it takes. However, there have been a few Giant players who have stepped it up lately and Lance touches on them.

This next week should be huge, tune in and find out what’s in store for the upcoming series’ vs. the Padres and Dodgers, which ultimately will decide the season.

The Giants have been bad all year long, but with their recent surge, they have a glimmer of hope. Lance Williams explains in this episode of 1954 and Counting why entering September 5.5 games back of the NL West division leading San Diego Padres means “game on.” Sure they
remain hovering around 10 games below .500, but this division is still up for grabs and the Giants have a re-enforcement on his way. Barry Bonds continues to progress daily and is now working out with the team. Lance explains why his presence alone in the lineup gives this team a huge shot in the arm, regardless how many home runs he hits.

Also, Lance talks about the huge upcoming series’ with the Dodgers and Padres. the Giants are going to need the young starters (Kevin Corriea, Brad Hennessey, Matt Cain) to step it up like Noah Lowry has. These next 2 weeks will decide the season.

As he does weekly, Lance presents his MLB power rankings with the St. Louis Cardinals coming in at #1 for the week. However, all the teams in the top 5 have there question marks.

He’s gone and done it now– Larry Kreuger, a voice on KNBR, the flagship station of the Giants, was quoted as saying on the air that the Giants are a bunch of “brain dead Caribbean hitters hacking at slop nightly.” He also directed a personal comment at manager Felipe Alou, comparing his mind to “cream of wheat.” Given only a week’s suspension by the station, the tolerance of these comments is mind-boggling; find out what Lance says should be done with Larry Kreuger (hint: it’s nothing good).

Keeping you up to date on the developing Rafael Palmeiro/ steroids saga, Lance delivers the latest; it has been confirmed that Raffi tested positive for the same substance that Ben Johnson took, which is a substance IMPOSSIBLE to ingest “accidentally.” Truth is, he sought it, he took it, and now Lance predicts he’s going to pay the penalty. Raffi, however, is still denying it and still clearly lying to the public; it is this sort of continual lying which could keep him out of the Hall of Fame.

Although Lance refuses to dance naked ballets for his wife (though he does love her very much!!!), he has no problem in evaluating the myriad of stories concerning Barry’s return to baseball. Barry says he won’t play for the rest of the season, but Lance gives his take on when/ if Barry will play in 2005.

Finally, using an espn.com article by Davis Schoenfeld as a springboard, Lance goes through a list of current MLB superstars and predicts who will (and won’t) make it into the Hall of Fame.
