Remembering Stan Lee

We change course this week to honor the man of Marvel, Stan Lee. After he passed away Monday, at the age of 95, we decided to push Our DCEU Justice League pitch to December so we could spend some time talking about one of the most influential people of the 20th and 21st centuries. Stan Lee likely contributed more to comic book and superhero culture than any other single person, so we decided to talk a bit about his life and what it meant to us.

It’s time to being a brand new segment on Screen Heroes, Let’s ReWrite It. We’re going to be re-writing movies starting with the DCEU. And what better place to start than where it all began, with Superman in Man of Steel. We begin with our news segment covering things like the backlash against Star Wars actors, the massive changes coming to the leadership at DC Comics, and some speculation for Suicide Squad 2, among other things. Then we take on Man of Steel in an attempt to provide Superman a better introduction into the DCEU. We look at tone, style, characters, plot points, action sequences, and more. You don’t want to miss the kickoff of the SHCU… the Screen Heroes Cinematic Universe.

What Should They Adapt Next?

Plus, Jared Leto is set to play the Joker in a standalone film… even though the Martin Scorsese and Joaquin Phoenix is still apparently in development. Finally, Avengers 4 concept art details!

A movie with solid acting that looks terrible might one day become a cult classic, but most of the time, if there’s bad special effects, people are turned off. This week, we take a look at our favorite practical effects in film. What are practical effects? These are special effects created with real, physical objects and no CGI or animation. Practical effects include puppets, robots, scale models, giant moving sets, prosthetics, and more.

The CW’s Arrowverse keeps on growing, seemingly adding new heroes every few weeks. Well, this week, we sit down with two returning guests to rank the Top 20 Arrowverse heroes. What are the rules? The hero needs to have been on at least one of Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, or Legends of Tomorrow. We are not counting Black Lightning for two reasons: 1. He hasn’t crossed over to the other shows yet. 2. We haven’t done our homework on that show and don’t want to do anyone a disservice. Everyone else who has suited up at one point or another is up for grabs!

Fantastic Beasts Review

It’s time to return to the Harry Potter Universe with the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which just landed in U.S. theaters last weekend. The new film that takes place in the 1920s was penned by J.K. Rowling herself and stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Colin Farrell.

With the movie new to theaters, we must warn you, there are spoilers in our review as we discuss characters, main plot points, expectations, and hopes for future films in the Fantastic Beasts series. Current plans are to include five distinct Fantastic Beasts films but we don’t expect them all to focus on Newt Scamander and his new friends.

Pitching a DC Comics CW Series

This week, each of our three hosts pitch their own TV series for The CW that exists in the DC Comics and DC Entertainment universe. The show can include any DC Comics character, but hopefully some that The CW could actually get their hands on. That’s about it for the rules. The shows can exist on Earth 1 with Flash and Arrow, Earth 2 or 3, or even whichever Earth (maybe 4) that Supergirl lives in. One thing we do is take the whole DCEU into account. While Barry Allen’s Flash exists in both The Flash TV show and in the movies, with different actors, we tried not to take advantage of that too much and focus on more DC Comics characters.

This week, we have a very special episode recorded live at Star Trek: Mission New York! This convention was in celebration of the Star Trek franchise’s 50th anniversary, which is officially Thursday, September 8th. We were lucky enough to attend and interview three fantastic people! First up, we have Kelli Fitzpatrick and Derek Attico. These two were both selected as part of the 10 whose personal Star Trek short stories were chosen for official publication in this year’s Strange New Worlds novel. This book series was annual from 1998 through 2007 but has now returned after its announcement last October with winners selected this past April. I was able to take some of Kelli and Derek’s time this weekend to talk about the experience and their process. Next, we were lucky enough to get some time with Al River, a Lead Designer for Star Trek Online, specifically focusing on the console launch of the game that hit PC over six years ago. The console launch happened yesterday, September 6th and is free-to-play on Xbox One and PS4. We go in-depth on the process of bringing the longtime PC game to consoles, details on UI changes, and more.

So far, this relationship has worked out incredibly well with the Marvel Netflix series earning more praise and support than the major network series on ABC A.G.E.N.T.S of Shield and Agent Carter. Much like what The CW has done for DC Entertainment, Netflix has done for Marvel. San Diego Comic-Con, also known as SDCC is over for the 2016 year. The countries biggest comic con always brings in the big news from comic book films to TV shows and beyond. If you’re one of the lucky ones able to grab a pass you have access to exclusive merchandise including action figures, posters, cloths, and more. On top of that, you get first dibs at the biggest panels of the year, specifically in the famous Hall H. This year, DC Entertainment and Star Trek had the two biggest showings with Marvel still not disappointing.

This week, we sat down for a special episode with our returning guest Ian of Haus of Turner Cosplay as we talk about the biggest SDCC news from DC, Marvel, Star Trek, and more!

Star Trek Beyond & Discovery

This week we boldly go reviewing Star Trek Beyond, which opened last weekend in most of the territories it will hit. This episode is full of spoilers as we talk characters and casting, motivations, plot points, the film’s resolution, special effects, costume design, and how the movie fits in with not just the Kelvin timeline but also the Prime timeline of the Star Trek franchise in its 50th year. Then, we talk a bit about the newly named Star Trek: Discovery series coming to CBS All-Access in January 2017. We talk about the title of the series, the title logo, and the ship design along with some of our hopes or thoughts on what we’d like to see in the next Star Trek series.

Star Trek Beyond won the US domestic box office, bringing in $59.25 million beating out The Secret Life of Pets, Lights Out, and Ice Age: Collision Course. The film had a $185 million budget not counting marketing and brought in an additional $30 million internationally bringing its opening weekend total to $95.5 million.

For our 30th episode, we review the new Ghostbusters (2016) movie with tons of spoilers! We talk casting, plot, writing, special effects, cameos, and more! Finding out what we liked about the Ghostbusters reboot plus what we didn’t. The film is in theaters now and stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth, directed by Paul Feig, from Columbia Pictures.

In its opening weekend, Ghostbusters (2016) pulled in a little over $46 million domestically with a $50 million 5-day haul, coming in second to The Secret Life of Pets. We talk about how the box office timing could hurt the film and whether or not its box office haul is due to the movie itself, competition, or the press leading up to the film’s release.

The next big DC Comics movie, Suicide Squad, is just under a month away! The live action anti-hero film stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as The Joker. The movie takes place in the same universe as Batman v Superman, with Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman in Suicide Squad.

To prep for the film, we sit down to talk about everything you need to know before you see it. We discuss how the group came to be, some of its previous members, how the Suicide Squad played out in The CW’s Arrow, and our thoughts on the casting. Welcome to Season 2 of the Screen Heroes podcast! Our first episode of the season is another fan cast. This time, Rae, Ryan, and I sit down to cast our own versions of Super Mario Bros. films. We’ve done fan casting before but for those who haven’t heard, we each pick our own style, tone, plot, cast, and director for the movie. We then go around discussing our individual visions and react accordingly. With our hometown comic con over, we recap KC’s largest comic convention, Planet Comicon. We talk about our experiences, how the convention has changed over the years, among other details. The original show ran from 1985-1989 with a short resurgence in a completely new version from 2011-2012. Talks of a live action film have been going on for years with even a fan trailer being made. Most recently, Michael Bay’s name has been attached due to some comments he’s made. Join us as we cast the major players like Lion-o, Panthro, Jaga, Tygra, Cheetara, Mummra, and of course, Snarf.

Broforce & Action Films

There’s tons of characters that you unlock as you rescue hostages. The game is very tongue-in-cheek and plays off the classic 80’s action stereotypes. As we play the game, we talk about the various characters we play as plus their films. For example, when playing as Will Smith’s Agent J from Men in Black, we talk about our thoughts on the franchise’s third film.

After receiving a new trailer for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, we sit down to talk about our expectations for the franchise’s 8th film, our thoughts on the trailer, and how we feel about the X-Men films in general. X-Men: Apocalypse releases on Memorial Day weekend and stars the younger X-Men cast including Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender, along with new additions like Olivia Munn and the movies primary antagonist, Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

Before we dive into the meat of the episode, we talk about our experiences at the Kansas City area costuming convention Figments & Filaments over the weekend. Rae and I were there representing the Super Sirens along with Rae’s other half, Hillz. Ryan and Nicole were there too representing Buster Props and Crystal Bat Designs.

The three of us have very different ideas that include varying directors, lead actors, and overall plot. The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dropped last week and everyone is talking about it, including us! Rogue One is the first of the Anthology films set in the Star Wars universe. This film takes place prior to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and focuses on the theft of the original Deathstar plans, no Bothans here. With me out of the commission for the evening, Rae and Ryan are joined by returning guest Ian from Haus of Turner Cosplay to talk about the trailer, their thoughts for the film, and some of the possibilities for the next two planned Anthology films, the next of which focuses on Han Solo.

Batman v Superman Analysis

The DCEU has officially started with the premiere of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film is bringing the cash along with complex opinions that range from a sub-30% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes to +70% by fans on the same site. People either love or hate this movie with little room for middle ground. With that in mind, we decided to sit down and discuss the main characters, plot points, and expectations for the film and upcoming DCEU movies including Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman. So there are lots of spoilers here! You’ve been warned. We also did a poster give away for our viewers who watched the live stream on Twitch as we recorded! We’re not sure what the next give away will be but keep up with us on Twitter and Facebook to find out and make sure to tune in live next week!

We’ve spent a lot of time on DC and Marvel comic book stuff recently, so it’s time to take a break and focus on some green friends, TMNT, otherwise known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Our reptilian friends have enjoyed four live action films, several animated series incarnations, some videos, and more plus another live action film slated for release this summer. We sit down to talk about what made us fans of TMNT, why we still love them today, what we didn’t like about the Michael Bay Ninja Turtles film, and what we hope to see in the sequel, Out of the Shadows.

Versus #1 – DC v. Marvel

In the first installment of our new Versus series, Rae pits Ryan and I against each other in a classic battle of DC Comics versus Marvel Comics, hero against hero, power against power. Live streamed on Twitch, we randomly pick superheros out of a jar and have to defend why ours should beat the other. Match-ups include Batman versus Captain America, Red Hood v Daredevil, Wonder Woman, v Captain Marvel, and Doctor Fate v Doctor Strange. Additionally, our Twitch subscribers and followers were able to cast their votes live during the recording to help pick our winner! Was it me? Was it Ryan? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer Reaction

This week is our first reaction episode. We sit down and watch the new Ghostbusters trailer live on the podcast and then break down our thoughts. We discuss what the trailer does for the upcoming film, including thoughts on humor style, special effects, music, and casting choices. We also talk about whether the earlier parts of the trailer imply that Ghostbusters is not a reboot but actually a long-lost sequel to the original 1984 film.

We even took questions from our live internet audience! How?

Well, to add to the fun, this is the first time we also hosted a Twitch live stream of us recording the podcast! That’s right, for the people who follow us on Facebook and Twitter, they were altered that they could join us on our Twitch channel to ask questions and watch us live! This something we’ll continue to do, so hopefully you’ll join us next week!

‘What If’ Iron Man Died?

R-Rated Comic Book Films

Just yesterday, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. announced that the upcoming DCEU film, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice will receive a special “Ultimate” R-Rated cut on Blu-Ray. This, of course, comes in the wake of the incredible success of Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool, which has shattered R-Rated film records and stands to bring in more than ten times its budget and already has a sequel underway. Many people, like James Gunn are worried that people will take away the wrong message about Deadpool’s success while others think this is a big opportunity for other franchises like Wolverine and Batman to finally see more gritty and darker tones that more closely match their comic book counterparts.

To address the issue, we sit down to talk about the success of Deadpool, our thoughts on an R-Rated Batman movie, and how other comic book movies have fared with their R-rating. Join us for the discussion and then comment with your thoughts. Let us know if you think certain comic book franchise are deserving of an R-Rating or if these films are just asking for trouble.

Batman, Through the Years

This week on Screen Heroes, Ryan and I are joined by our prop builder friend, Jon to talk about how the DC Comics iconic character, Batman has changed over the years in movies, TV, and video games. We hit on the classic Adam West version, Tim Burton’s take, as well as George Clooney. We also discuss the big Christopher Nolan trilogy and the highly anticipated Ben Affleck debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Outside of movies, we talk about the very popular Arkham video game franchise plus some of Batman’s better known animated works like The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: The Animated Series.

Before we jump into the Dark Knight, the three of us provide our initial thoughts on FOX’s new R-rate superhero film, Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds. We’ve all seen it, now we talk about it. We discuss what we liked about it plus some things they might have done better. It’s a short part of the episode but beware.

After taking a week off due to snowstorms, Screen Heroes returns to discuss what we are all wondering… who will be in Marvel’s Infinity War films set to close out Phase 3 of the MCU? The Russo brothers are responsible for directing not just Captain America: Civil War but also both parts of Infinity War. In an interview, they threw the number 67 out, as the number of characters they are currently working with. Now, they did clarify and say they just threw out a random and generic number but hey, let’s have some fun! Join us as we try to come up with 67 Marvel canon characters that Marvel Studios owns the rights to who could show up in the massive ensemble films!

Deadpool’s Apocalypse

In Episode 03 of Screen Heroes we talk about the new X-Men: Apocalypse trailer along with our thoughts on the soon to release Deadpool film.

This past week, FOX released the first trailer and actual footage from the upcoming Marvel Comics-based film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Apocalypse is the sequel to the 2014 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past which saw our mutant heroes fighting for the future with the help of Wolverine. Apocalypse takes place in the 80s with our younger mutant heroes a little bit older. Raven appears to be a good guy now as well as a lot less blue plus Magneto once again pushes the limits of his friendship with Professor X who… actually becomes bald at some point in the film! My favorite shot in the whole trailer.

After breaking down the first X-Men: Apocalypse trailer, we switch gears to a more controversial and adult Marvel Comics character, Deadpool. The new Deadpool film is slated for a February 12th release and looks to be a perfect role for once DC Comics superhero actor, Ryan Reynolds.

This week on Screen Heroes, we switch to the (DCEU) DC Comics Extended Universe to breakdown The CW’s Flarrow crossover for 2015. Since the launch of The Flash, The CW has taken advantage of its connected DC universe to bring us fun crossover events from a single character all the way up to major plot points. This year was no different. The CW brought us our Flarrow crossover last week with The Flash episode “Legends of Today” and Arrow episode “Legends of Yesterday”. These episodes brought new characters to the Flarrow-verse, which include heroes Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée) and Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) along with Legends of Tomorrow main villain, Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). Episode 02 of Screen Heroes is focused on breaking down these two episodes along with what we’ve seen in the Legends of Tomorrow trailer. We’ll discuss the overall plot, what we liked, what we didn’t, and what we’d change if The CW handed over the reigns.

Welcome to the first episode of Screen Heroes, a new superhero themed podcast series from The Grid: A Sci-Fi Frontier. Screen Heroes will cover everything we see on the big and small screen dealing with superheroes. That means the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the DC Comics Extended Universe (DCEU), and anything else production companies throw at us.

The premiere of Screen Heroes is being dual published on Grid Talk’s feed, so everyone who listens in to our original series will also be able to listen to our first episode of Screen Heroes. While we are not on iTunes yet, we will be soon!

In our first episode, we’ll kick things off by discussing the pros and cons of the MCU. What is good about the massive connected universe? What are the pitfalls of such a far reaching group of franchises?
