Summer is Here!

As a kid, my summers were always lazy and unstructured. My sisters and I were always sent outside in the morning, and the day was spent trying to find activities to do. My point is, summer is here and it's the perfect time to purchase some Lifetime playground equipment.

One of my kids’ favorite games to play on our playset at home is “Fish Out of Water.” I sit with my eyes closed, and if I think one of my kids are off the playset I yell, “Fish out of water!” If they get caught, we switch and they have to try and catch me.

Last year I wanted to come up with something original for a Mother’s Day gift. I didn’t want to go with the traditional flowers, birdhouses, or candy. Showing her how much she means to me and how much I appreciate everything she does is really important. I racked my brain for days trying to come up with something creative, something different and something that could be enjoyed for more than just one day a year. What would surprise her? What could I do that she wouldn’t expect? Then it hit me! A kayak!!

When Mother’s Day arrived she was never more excited! Instantly she began listing off all the places she could go and how jealous all her friends would be. I think the thing she liked the most was that now we could go out kayaking together. Not only did this give her a new activity, but it gave her a fun way to hang out with her daughter.

What a Handy Craft Table!

I recently purchased a Lifetime 4-Foot Fold-In-Half Table for my own personal use. I live in a fairly small apartment, so space can be limited at times. This 4-Foot Table is perfect because it has an awesome fold-in-half design that allows me to store it in my small closet. It is also very easy to set up and use when I want to. Another cool feature is the adjustable height design which allows you to raise and lower the table to whatever height is best for your project. And even thought it is a super lightweight design, I also love the handle to help carry it around my place.

Well, I found out that my sister-in-law is pregnant and is having a baby boy! I am very excited and decided that I want to make her a baby quilt. Keep Your Tools Organized With a Lifetime Shed

At dinner with some friends this weekend we got talking about my job at Lifetime. One of my friends said, “Lifetime makes a lot of cool stuff.”

There is a reason I have started my seventh year here at the company… because I agree. We do make a lot of cool stuff. Working in the Lawn & Garden category these past six years, I have seen a lot of new products. But the core of the category has always been our sheds. In fact, it was an idea to create a shed that launched the category, and thus, my job!

One of the neatest innovations in our family of sheds, in my opinion, has been our 10x8 and 15x8 line. These sheds have proven to be very popular. One of the great things about them is the way they allow you to organize your stuff. With the entry on the long side, you can compartmentalize between right and left halves of the shed. This means that when you need something at the back you don’t have to unload everything to get to it. You can leave a walkway down the middle and put say, lawn stuff on the right side and storage on the left.

Overnight Kayak Adventures

For most people, when they think about kayaking, they think of a day trip to the local lake. Maybe a vacation day spent floating on the ocean, watching the birds and listening to the calm ocean ripples. While these trips are great, with just a bit more effort, you can really turn a kayaking trip into a fun filled outdoor adventure.

What better way to bond with your family or a group of friends then to be outside, away from all the electronic distractions, kayaking and camping in the wilderness. There are several ways to enjoy a camping and kayak trip. Some rivers flow through campgrounds, parks or national forest land allow camping right along the banks of the rivers. This type of trip can be great for a weekend get-a-way. Day one is spent paddling a few miles to your secluded campsite and getting yourself all setup. You get to spend one fantastic night by the fire, listening to the river and enjoying good company. The next day, you pack up, and get going for another paddle. A few miles and your back on dry land! This style trip will require some additional planning and equipment. It is good to have some dry bags and storage so you can bring your tent, sleeping attire and of course food! Paddlers will need kayaks with storage, such as hatches, larger tank wells, or a lot of bungee to tie things down. Also, be sure you find a calm section of river that does not have rapids or hazards. Always check with the Park Service, Forest Service, Army Core of Engineers or whoever manages the river to make sure this style trip is permitted. Local libraries always have great resources for finding overnight rivers, launch points and campgrounds. Look for a guide to kayaking or river running in your destination state. Be sure not to camp on private land.

The second, and easier route for camping and kayaking, is to just find a campsite a long a river, lake or pond where you can paddle during your free time. Many lakes and reservoirs permit camping along the banks. Here you can setup and not have to worry about hauling your camping equipment down the river. This lowers the need for storage, dry bags and creative packing. While maybe not as secluded, you still get to enjoy the wildlife, campfire and fresh air of the great outdoors. And really, nothing beats good campfire food and s’mores!

Relax This Summer!

So the first few weeks of Spring are fun to work in the yard…then, reality hits, and I remember how yard work can be a lot of hard work! One of my favorite products we sell is our Adirondack chair.

This chair is perfect for chillin’ after pulling weeds and planting flowers. Made from Polystyrene – a big word for a type of plastic that is made to look and feel like wood – this chair is great looking! It is low to the ground and has a slight recline so it’s nice and comfortable. The wood-like material is stain resistant, and holds up well in the sun. It looks like wooden furniture, but you won’t have to stain it every year.

A word of caution…when you tell your spouse you’ll be out weeding, don’t let her find you sleeping in your Adirondack chair…been there, done that, and the outcome wasn’t so good.

This spring, our watersports department has done something we never have before! We are coming out with a limited edition paddleboard. Sure, this will be the Freestyle XL board we all know and love but there is something that makes it special; its Purple! Not only is this our first limited edition kayak or paddleboard, it is also our first purple one!

In total, there will be 325 Purple Freestyle XL’s out there for the lucky few who can get there hands on one. I am personally a huge fan of purple, and I think this board looks great.
