The MSBA’s Strategic Planning Committee, with the help of consultant Cincinnatus, is in the middle of drafting a new mission statement for the association. The MSBA’s current mission statement, available here, has been deemed too long. In its place the committee is working to simplify the mission statement and also come up with a list of organizational values and overall vision statements. We’ve been looking at what Cincinnatus deemed good mission statements, and I’ve listed some below. Currently, after meeting this week, a very rough working draft that is being passed around goes something like this:

The MSBA serves the public and its members by promoting the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and excellence and by working to improve the law and the administration of justice.

A forewarning: this is only a working draft, not something anywhere close to being cemented in stone. We expect changes to be made as we work through alternative drafts and hear back from members and staff. Already, I’ve heard comments that we need to switch the order of “the public and its members” to “its members and the public.” I’ve also heard comments from staff that we need to include more emphasis on practice-oriented resources and values, which currently is thought to be included in the word “excellence.” These are both good points.

Let us know what you think of the current working language. When the committee meets again on October 25, this issue should be front and center for determination.

Other Mission Statements

American Bar Association

To serve equally our members, our profession and the public by defending liberty and delivering justice as the national representative of the legal profession.

Virginia State Bar Association

The mission of the Virginia State Bar, as an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia, is to regulate the legal profession of Virginia; to advance the availability and quality of legal services provided to the people of Virginia; and to assist in improving the legal profession and the judicial system.

Microsoft

At Microsoft, our mission and values are to help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential.

Washington State Bar Association

The Washington State Bar Association’s mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

Minnesota Women Lawyers

To advance the success of women in the legal profession and strive for a just society.

Arizona State Bar Association

The State Bar of Arizona serves the public and enhances the legal profession by promoting the competency, ethics and professionalism of its members and enhancing the administration of justice.

If you have responded to our recent request for input on the future strategic plan for the MSBA, thank you! As of October 6, we’ve received 2,078 responses to the strategic plan survey, which asked the following five substantive questions:

Rank the importance of eleven specified MSBA activities [results];

What work/program/service of the MSBA is most valuable to you? [results]

What work/program/service of the MSBA is least important to you? [results]

What is the most relevant service or program that the MSBA could provide to you? [results]

What trend in society or the legal profession itself is the greatest threat to you or your practice? [results]

While the current responses represent about 15 percent of the members whom we surveyed, it’s a healthy response rate, based on our prior surveys. On top of that, we’ve received more than 4,380 individual comments to the four open-ended questions. MSBA staff is now working through those responses and broadly categorizing them so that we can more easily spot trends, common issues, or plain-out great ideas.

If you want to see full results of the survey, click on the Review Results button below. We’d also love to keep getting your thoughts and ideas, either by commenting on this post, contacting us here, or by reviewing or submitting new ideas here.
