No. 22 Nebraska comes into this post-season battle with a 9-4 overall record and Big 12 North Division title to its credit. The Huskers put together a 6-2 conference record in route to the Big 12 Championship Game and they went 4-1 against their division brethren. Bo Pelini’s squad closed out the season on a roll, winning five straight games before their heartbreaking 12-13 loss to Texas in the conference championship.

After Dallas police reported that then Heisman-hopeful Suh reported the threat, a UNL spokesman stated that the college football player had no knowledge, and deferred the allegation to one of the numerous fans that create and manage web groups in his name.

Ndamukong Suh, the defensive tackle of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, has been invited to New York and is now a serious contender for the Heisman trophy.
After recently winning the Outland and Bednarik awards, he also scooped up the Lombardi award for being the nation’s best lineman. And now he has his sights set on the most coveted award for any player.

Historically, the Heisman Award is given to the best players of which the majority, if not all, are given to offensive players. If won, he would become only the second defensive player to ever win the award. The only other defensive player ever to win the award was Charles Woodson in 1997, and he was a cornerback for Michigan. Suh also gets to look forward to being the 1st overall pick in the NFL draft.

It’s no surprise that Suh has carried the Nebraska Cornhuskers this season; whose offense was mediocre at best. Suh dominated as defensive tackle for the Huskers, and has broken records for sacks, has 82 tackles, of which twenty three were for a loss, breaking previous school records.

In the game versus the Texas Longhorns alone, he garnered twelve sacks against fellow Heisman candidate Colt McCoy. After McCoy threw the ball away while being pursued by Suh, a review decided there was still a second left, setting Texas up for the field goal and the win.

The last Cornhusker to win the Heisman trophy was Eric Crouch in 2001, and if he wins, he will be only the second defensive player to win in the history of the Heisman. Other past Cornhusker players to win the Heisman were Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch.

The Heisman Award Ceremony will be aired on ESPN at 8:00 pm EST.
