On Crazy, elodieO delivers a halting, sensual vocal over a chunky down-tempo beats, backed by lush electro sounding synths played softly throughout the track. Perfect chill-out music for a candle lit, romantic encounter. The original version of Le Mer has a break-beat flow, with elodieOs sweet, soft, French language vocals distributed across the tracks hook, building a sense of urgency and even a bit of despair. Since we dont speak French here at Netmix and we dont have a sexy, French translator hanging around the office, we cant really tell you what shes saying. Youll have to interpret it all yourself. With French being the language of love, it shouldnt be that hard. Even if you cant translate, dont run out to purchase that Rosetta Stone language kit from your local mall just yet. Click on the play icon below to listen. elodieO Le Mer (Zeb Remix) So, youre probably asking: who is elodieO? Well, according to Caitlin, her publicist, elodieO is Parisian by birth. Shes been a staple of the New York City LES/Nublu electro scene that nurtured Kudu and The Brazilian Girls. If youre not familiar with Nublu, its a tiny, hole-in-the-wall space in the East Village, which is becoming the defacto launch pad for many of todays eclectic New York electro artists. The space consists of a bar on one side of the room and a banquet on the other side. Theres no stage. People simply make a semi-circle just wide enough to fit the bands equipment. Its a pretty raw experience, which is what makes it seeing artists there so appealing. On this EP, elodiO composed and arranged all the music with the exception of two re-arranged songs by Serge Gainsbourg and The Cure.  Aaron and Jesse of the Brazilian Girls have a hand in the project as well. Users who register with the service can upload any track they wish, sort and create play lists, and then publish those play lists to a streaming radio player. The Flash-based player can then be ported to a blog, web site, or social network like MySpace. One of the best features is the ability to attach other users play lists to your own, creating a viral opportunity for great programmers to have their mixes heard across the network. Initially, listeners will be able to purchase tracks through Amazons download service (when available), but the company hopes to integrate with independent and niche download stores as well. At this point, the service is in its Alpha testing phase. A beta launch is planned for late Q1 or early Q2 of this year. Netmix has partnered with 8tracks.com and will be switching streaming radio services at the end of the month. For the time being, youll be able to listen to both until January 31, when the switch will be complete. I know I was hard on Beatport in the past, but the service finally got around to building out a text linking program through their partnerships with Linkshare, an affiliate network that provides companies with the tools to build out affiliate programs. I found most of the tracks, but there were a few I couldnt track down. It might be because they are new and havent pushed an update to Linkshare yet. Beatport have also created an API through LinkShare, which I hope to use in the future. But for now, well just keep it simple. The program is a mix show programmers dream. With it, you can either DJ live or you can use the sequencing feature to lay your tracks into the timeline. The software uses a feature called warping to identify and sync the beats from two different songs. For many years, I refused to go from vinyl to CD. When CDs skip, it can cause a very ubrupt digital hiccup. Its not something that I inherently trusted in a live environment. CD players rely on optics to read the discs. I always thought, correctly or not, that if the player wasnt cleaned regularly, youd have dirt accumulate on the lenses and cause a skipping problem. Not to mention, once a CD is scratched, it renders the technogy pretty much useless. I cant tell you how many times Ive been in nightclubs and heard that awful sound. A few years back, Id seen a demo of Stantons Final Skratch in beta (before Stanton acquired the technology). I was impressed but had heard there were latency issues. I continued to play vinyl until Native Instruments released the first version of Traktor DJ. After that, I was hooked on digital DJing. You no longer needed to carry crates of records (I used to carry about 400 to 500 to my gigs), lug turntables or worry about CDs skipping. I really liked Traktor 2, but was unhappy with Traktor 3s new software interface. Theyd changed the pitch control from a fader to a knob. I think that was a big mistake. Unless you can assign the knob to a hardware interface, its hard to work with the knob using a mouse. I also noticed the the beat sync wasnt as good as in the prior version. Id started to hear about a few DJs, like Sasha and David Waxman, who were using Ableton Live to mix. Id got a copy of Live Lite 4 with an M-Audio firewire interface. I quickly realized there wasnt much I could do with it, unless I converted all my mp3 tracks to wav. It wasnt until Ableton 5 that MP3 was adopted as a supported format. A few weeks ago, I purchased Live 6 from BH Photo on 34th Street (got a discount with my NYU student ID) and got started learning how to DJ with it. The manual doesnt offer much real instruction, so I checked out YouTube.com, where I found a few video tutorials, which taught me how to warp my tracks and set up my mixer with M-Audio firewire DJ Mixer. After a few stops and starts, I learned that I didnt have to spend three hours at a sitting mixing my set. I could lay all the tracks in to the timeline and match or sync them. What a revelation! It became so simple to put together a set, which Ive posted here. You can either listen by clicking the play icon or you can download the full set.
