So I have a few Raspberry Pis and they are ok for what I'm using them for. I've never found them to be a great GUI desktop device though. I know you've frequently complained that the Pi isn't really "open" and using closed proprietary blobs for main components, an opinion that aligns with my own values. However I've been burned in the past dabbling in alternatives (Pine64) due to lack of decent software driver/image support. Meanwhile, as closed as the Pi is, it has excellent support with frequent solid software images being released.

So, that raises today's question: what do you feel is the most "open" platform that also has good and active software/driver support? Here are my criteria:

- Should not be much larger than a Ras Pi
- Does not need to be more powerful than a Pi4
- Needs to have a GPU with good driver support (for ongoing support of graphics acceleration, since I want to be running a Linux desktop GUI and will occasionally play video)
- Does not need wifi or bluetooth
- Built-in gigabit ethernet (RJ45)
- HDMI or other digital video out
- Active GUI desktop image support, historical and promising signs for the future (at a minimum should have a working Bionic-based image)

I’ve recently discovered your great show which has helped me keep up to date with new and upcoming mini PCs and ideas on different ways I can use them.I just wanted to mention a great little board that I recently got for only $30 on Amazon but haven’t seen anybody talk about: the Libre Computer Renegade. It’s almost identical to the Rock64, however, it’s powered via normal micro-USB.

I know, Libre Computer boards (like Le Potato) aren’t that well supported but what’s different about this board though is that it has DDR4 RAM clocked at 2133Mhz which is faster than the normal LPDDR3 found in many boards. It comes in 1, 2 or 4 GB RAM variants priced $30, $40 and $60 respectively.

I got this Renegade board to replace my Raspberry Pi 3 for better performance and faster transfer speeds and I have been running it for over 6 months now as an OMV NAS with 2TB HDD to backup all my devices. It’s been very stable with great transfer speeds.

The really big issue with this board, however, is the poor support by popular distros. The manufacture’s website offers several images including Android which runs great as well as Debian and Ubuntu server and desktop images. There are also kernel 4.4 Armbian images that run just fine. But the 5.4 images are still in testing state.

I hope this great low-cost board gets more developer attention and better software support as the hardware is really promissing.
