Okay, okay. We here at Talkin’ Texas know there’s so much more than Ranger baseball going on right now…like the NFL, the NHL, NBA preseason, and oh yeah, that little thing called the World Series. But don’t fret, because in 17 short minutes, Lacy delivers a lot of bang for your buck.

First off: It’s a Texas Rangers news-in-brief segment, going over a few of the major changes that have happened to the team in the past couple of weeks (including De Marlo Hale’s new job with the Red Sox, and Orel Hershiser’s possibilities). Now on a bi-monthly schedule for the off-season, Talkin’ Texas is back to check in with you on specific Texas Rangers news bits, and broader topics in MLB as well.

First and foremost: the ongoing 2005 playoffs. These are really putting Lacy to sleep, largely because even Miss Cleo knew that the Cardinals were going to absolutely crush the Padres in the NL, and now that the Red Sox are gone from the AL, there’s no more possibility for the Yankees/ Red Sox rivalry of 2004 that made skipping class (or work) so much fun. And when it comes to the Yankees Vs. the Angels, does anyone really have a preference? (Yankee fans are of course excluded from the obvious rhetorical “YES!”)

Also, breaking news with the Texas Rangers is the resignation of General Manager John Hart and the introduction of his new replacement, the former Assistant GM who also happens to be 28 years old, Jon Daniels. With any luck, Mr. Daniels will understand that getting decent pitchers to the team does not involve trading them away for Designated Hitters who really can’t even hit.

Lacy also takes a few moments out to scoff at Carlos Almanzar for testing positive for a substance on the MLB banned substances list (i.e. steroids). He’ll be out for 10 games in the 2006 season, but we’ll raise eyebrows at him for much longer than that.

If you’re rained in this weekend from Hurricane Rita, relax and catch the (slightly late) newest episode of Talkin’ Texas! Playoff races in of the Major Leagues are getting hotter each day, and Lacy goes through each division in both leagues selecting her playoff
picks, as well as which teams she thinks will edge out a Wild Card spot.

As you know, the Texas Rangers won’t be a part of those playoffs this season, as they were officially mathmatically eliminated from them after Wednesday night’s game against the Angels. What did them in? Was it pitching? Bad clutch hitting? Lack of bunts and sacrifice hits? Nope. Lacy has a theory for why the Rangers got left out of the playoffs this season, and it has nothing to do with Edison Volquez’s 13.50 ERA.

It’s episode lucky #13 of Talkin’ Texas, and although Lacy’s busy out looking for Josh Lewin, she dropped you a podcast before she left. The end of the season means roster expansion, and roster expansion means the appearance of some players we haven’t seen very much so far this year. The arrival of September is bittersweet for the 2005 Texas Rangers; it’s a joyous occasion because it marks the end of the horror known as August 2005, but it’s also sad because September baseball won’t be very meaningful this year for Ranger fans. (Unless you especially like seeing Mark DeRosa and Adrian Gonzalez take the places of All-Stars like Hank Blalock and Mark Teixeira.)

But the podcast must go on, and Lacy responds to a message board post regarding David Dellucci possibly going to the Cardinals– anyone else think there’s something fishy about the Cards pursuing an established DH? Or maybe they’re pursuing that cannon of an outfield arm. Yeah. That’s it.

This starting rotation is undoubtedly at its scariest.
