This week we're going to try something different. We've been wanting to do some "top five" features for a while now. Things like "top five plot twists." Or "top five movie lines." Or "top five worst haircuts" (which I guess would be a "bottom five" list).

So today we're going to start out easy (after all, that haircut one sounds painful). We're doing our top five thematic sci-fi films. I don't mean movies like Star Wars. We're talking movies that are trying to speak to us. Movies that make us think. Movies not by Michael Bay. ;)

MC_014: The Dark Knight

The biggest opening weekend in movie history. The largest midnight showing. The best IMAX opening ever. The Dark Knight broke some pretty impressive records, but was it all hype, or was there any substance? Or more specifically, was the substance deserving of the hype?

We loved the movie, but we try to put some things into perspective. And yes, that means we had some complaints. But not very many. This is a hard movie to complain about.

MC_012: Hellboy 2

One of us said Hellboy 2 was a lot of fun, with creative imagery, great action scenes, and enjoyable characters. One of us said Hellboy 2 was even worse than Indy 4, with caricatures rather than characters and a plot that made him go from bored to frustrated to angry. As you can imagine, it was a fun show to record. With this episode, we're going back to a format we used long ago, where we start by giving a quick spoiler-free review, and then (with warning) enter into a longer spoiler-filled discussion. Rather than merely doing reviews, we want to facilitate discussion about films.

MC_011: Hancock

Our Hancock review this week is short, since most of our complaints are at the end of the film, and we're trying to avoid spoilers. This movie will make a killing at the box office, and there'll be a large crowd who'll think it's great, but I think most of that is hold-over from the very enjoyable first half of the film. MC_009: Get Smart

Other than "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", there haven't been many good comedies out this year. Fortunately, we now have "Get Smart," a refreshingly good action comedy. Unless you're Andrew, that is -- he found it lame and predictable. Why does Andrew not like it? Does it live up to the hype? Are all the funny parts in the trailers? MC_008: The Incredible Hulk

MC_006: Iron Man

Iron Man raises the bar for comic book movies even higher than Batman Begins did. Join Andrew, Brian, Erik and Jeff as they look at this year's first big blockbuster. MC_005: Forbidden Kingdom

Wow. Andrew really didn't like Forbidden Kingdom. At all. Sure, Forbidden Kingdom dominated the box office two weekends ago, but that was apparently the result of good marketing. Andrew's review is insightful and... umm... well, passionate (I think the channeling of Dennis Leary at one point was unintentional). Did I mention he really didn't like this movie? As an added bonus, I've included Andrew's "Top 5 Kung Fu Fights" feature. He recorded this before the movie came out, but it seems fitting that the show end on a high-note.

By popular demand, the RandomChatter podcast is splitting off the movie reviews into its own show! Welcome to the premiere episode of MovieChatter! With MovieChatter, we'll be doing two types of shows. The first is a discussion-based format like you're used to. The other is a short "microcast" format in which we'll give five- to ten-minute-long reviews of movies. These will include new theatrical releases, new DVD releases, and even some older "Pick of the Week" DVDs. In our first episode, we cover the cop drama Street Kings, in which Keanu "Whoa" Reeves, Forest "Gump" Whitaker, Chris "Flame On" Evans, and Hugh "Real Actor" Laurie read from a script written by a high-schooler. At least, that's how it seemed to us...
