Song of The Week #52.177457: Exodus (Wake Me Up)

When we started The Songs Of The Week, we set out to do a full year's worth of songs.

According to Google Calculator,
1 year = 365.242199 days, or
1 year = 52.177457 weeks

So that means we need to release 52.177457 Songs-Of-The-Week in order to make a full year's worth. We've already released 52 Songs-Of-The-Week, so now we just need .177457 of a song.

But when to release it? We've consistently released one every week for 52 weeks. Now we need to release this last one precisely .177457 of a week after the 52nd song. According to Google Calculator, .177457 of a week = 107,325.994 seconds. Using timeanddate.com, if you add 107,325.994 seconds to April 5, 2008, Saturday night at midnight, you arrive at Monday, April 7, 2008 at 5:48:45 AM.

So here's your .177457 of a song, right on time.

And that concludes The Songs-Of-The-Week.

Exodus (Wake Me Up) x .177457, by Micah

Before we ever had a band, we had the LeBaron convertible, the most worn-out awesomest convertible ever. It leaked when it rained, and sometimes it didn't work, but driving around with the top down and the air conditioner on full-blast was a Summer experience not to be missed.

LeBaron

Cherry ice and thaw it all
LeBaron drive the whole
2581 miles left to go.
Well the tire's got a hole
no not one, it's all four
I've never slept on the hood before.
Wash liquid frozen
near dead in Wyoming.
It seem we're stuck, but hey! Keep going!

(Chorus) Keep going on! Drag the world along! Never stop until we get to everything!

(Bridge) Feel me empower earth as the day goes
Feel it come to a stop because I said so.
And I really think for sure
I am the only one in awe at all, awe at all.
Am I just the only one to find awe in the everything he knows?

Can You Believe It

You better bite off just a bit of me, you don't know what you need
Least of all a reason to see, I am true to you
Going to find the bottom of this, I am reckless too
Going to find the bottom of this, not make a wreck of you

Never going to see what you need, in the CIC
Never find a reason to be, here in back of you
Reason with the reason I see, I give comfort too
Reason with me reasonably, make you a better you

Going find myself on the morning flight
Going to hug my knees 'til I see the light
And if I find myself on the other side
I say...Hey, Hey, Hey
Can You Believe It!

You better open up your eyes just to see, this is what I do
Walking toward mankind's greatest leap, and I'll be landing soon
Taking my guitar in a bag, I'm packing bags for two
Better off for taking a drag down the 202

Taking everything that I need, get in the driver's seat
Heading for the piece that I see, get you a piece for you
Biting off more than I can chew, this is what I need
Biting off much more than I knew, this is destiny

On Friday night we were in the middle of Atlanta, GA when a tornado unexpectedly struck the city. We were at our hotel laying in our beds, and suddenly the wind picked up and the rain started pelting the walls and roof. From our 8th floor window, we looked out over the cityscape and all we could see was debris swirling and filling the skies, like some type of beautifully horrific snow globe. Then we wrote this song.

(I Lie) Awake

Wretched pieces of me lie awake
On my pillow of scars
Broken promises and pretty face
My ceiling made of stars

The walls descend into the angry waves
The sheet lifts up into the night
A thousand reasons why I'm not afraid
Debris of heaven fills the sky

I lie awake, I lie awake (rpt)

Ripped from my place in myself
Into the tunnel of light
Vortex of beauty and dark
Somewhere between earth and sky

I lie awake, I lie awake (rpt)

A thousands strangers look up
Into the night, in the sky
I drift into the ether
My thousand pieces collide

I lie awake, I lie awake

Song of The Week #48: Left Alone

The nature of all things is to grow. -micah

Left Alone

There's a little flower growing near your home
But it's not going to grow there no more
Because you plucked from the place where it stood

So you put it in a vase on your shelf
Fill with water just to show how you feel
And you watch it as the leaves turn to gray

One by one all the petals drop and fall
Then you close them in a book on a page
Pieces melt, and they all melt away

And it fades away
As it strains toward the light
From it's place on the shelf
Close the blinds, shade the light

There's a little girl playing by the gate
People smile, and touch her pretty hair
They'll preserve her fragile beauty in a frame

So tell her of a place big and wide
Magic things, wondrous things she can know
And lead her by the hand to the door

And they'll put her deep inside of a cage
Walls of concrete, and bars made of bone
Pretty soon walls and chairs will be her home

And she fades away
As she strains toward the light
Come inside, take your place
Turn your head, shade your eyes

There's a little girl growing near your home
Pluck a flower for her hair, and she knows

At our official monthly band "business" meeting on Tuesday, we all decided we wanted to start co-authoring and collaborating more than we currently do, and this week we got to try it out for the first time in awhile.

Basically I woke up on Wednesday morning with the instrumental tracks to this song going through my head. I went down stairs that morning, before anyone else got up, and recorded a vocal-interpretation of the 3 background melodies (my pathetic attempt at mimicking the main synth, synth lead, and lead guitar I might post the clip later). Today, Gabe helped me get past the technical aspects of laying down the actual instrument tracks for the song (synth, synth lead, bass, drums, and lead guitar), and put together the main structure. Then, Micah and I put our heads together for the lyrics (mainly Micah's credit), and finished it up at about 5:00 p.m. From then on, me and Gabe worked on the lead vocal and harmony, and then he finished up mixing and mastering at about 10:30, 35 minutes ago.

This is a song about writer's block. My problem wasn't having too few ideas, but having no idea of which direction to go with them. So I sat down and wrote this song. And ironically, for a song about writer's block, I wrote it in one pass, totally spontaneously, with no pre-planning or editing of the words. I just hit record, and these are the words that came out.

We've also done some experimental stuff with multiple takes of me singing. But we used all of them here.
Song of the Week #16: Haiku

The other day I realized that someone I know emails in "Haiku", that form of Japanese poetry we all love. You know, like this:

"i was wondering
if you would like to meet up -
for an early lunch"

So I decided to write a song in Haiku. The rules of Haiku are this:

There are three lines, each line consisting of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, respectively. The whole thing consists of 17 syllables.

There is a break after the first or second line, indicating a change in thought, usually marked by a hyphen or comma.

There is a season word indicating in which season the Haiku was written. It can be the name of the season, or a more subtle indicator, like blossoms or rain.

My song follows these rules. Additionally, it uses the word "Haiku" in its lyrics, making it a meta-Haiku, a Haiku which refers to itself. Further, after the instruments break out temporarily, the keyboard, bass, and drums come back in on the 5th, 7th, and 5th beats, respectively. This corresponds to the number of syllables in each line of Haiku. I thought that would be a nice touch. :)

You can read more about Haiku here:
Haiku For People
Wikipedia

Haiku

Every year at youth camp in Fall Creek Falls State Park (TN), Gabe has performed this song solo for all the campers, and this year was no exception. After our special performance for Antioch Bible Camp at Fall Creek Falls State Park on Thursday night (8/2/07), Gabriel once again did a special performance of this song, and he promised the campers that the song would also be posted on the website when they returned to civilization. So, here, ladies and gentlemen, is "Dog in the Middle of the Road":

"Dog in the Middle of the Road" by Gabriel Redding

Since Micah is out of town this weekend in Sikeston, MO, Gabe and I were left alone to get this week's podcast completed ourselves. The results? This week's song called "Ever". Gabe and I have deemed it to be roughly Gin Blossoms-esque. Let us know what your verdict is! (Double-click below to start the video!) Josiah

The Redding Brothers bring you a unique song to commemorate a unique day: 7-7-07. Recorded on the newly fixed recording equipment, with input from all sides, and a visit from Corey to spice things up, this is one of the more interesting songs to date.

Desperation

Left alone to record the song without Gabe, Micah was unable to solve the technical problems that occurred with the band's recording equipment. So this song was recorded in one take on Micah's computer microphone, without the benefit of modern recording technology.

The guitar he used to record this was appropriately enough still soaked with blood from the show in Paducah.

STAIN

I think it's safe to say that this is probably the weirdest song you've ever heard; it is definitely the weirdest song The Redding Brothers have ever created.

First of all, it's a cappella.
Secondly, it sounds like 50s doo-wop.
Thirdly, the background is Micah reading a philosophical treatise.

Extra points if you find said treatise and post the link in the comments.

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL, PART 1
