Steve Van Wyk leads the company’s technical transformation to establish world-class processes and systems across ING’s global banking operations.

Prior to taking on this mission, Mr. Van Wyk served as Chief Information Officer of ING U.S. Financial Services and ING Insurance Americas. Prior to this he served as a top IT executive at Morgan Stanley for 10-years. Before joining Morgan Stanley, he held senior level technology positions at Deloitte and Touche, Pella Windows and Phillips Petroleum.

Mr. Van Wyk is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor. He graduated from Central University of Iowa with a double major in Accounting and Business Management.

Looking back on 2010, we noticed fewer CIO moves in the APAC region in the first two quarters of 2010 as companies focused on cost management and delaying transformation programmes. Interestingly, there appeared to be increased levels of activity during the same period in the Americas and Europe.

We have not observed much movement in the CIO space in the last two quarters. This perhaps points towards the impact of the global economic crisis where many organisations shifted their focus to short term, cost-cutting goals during the downturn. This is also evidenced by the growth in outsourcing services and the bullish view of a number providers who have strengthened their teams in the region.

One interesting theme we are noticing is how many CEOs are focussing on a need for greater technical innovation, especially around Web 2.0 technologies, in the way their business connects with its customers and with its staff. We have heard on several occasions, clients commenting that their staff and customers use more innovative IT at home than they are provided with at work. This presents an opportunity for those CTOs and CIOs who may have helped build a successful online business but want to take this experience into a bigger, more analogue, type of business. Conversely those CIOs who have neglected innovation and focussed instead on the cost and efficiency side of their function, by leading infrastructure consolidation projects or major ERP implementations, may find it is harder to get onto the shortlist as they consider other roles.
