Zappos still sell shoes, of course, but now their customer service team is also pitching in to offer all kinds of support at a time when most of us could use an extra hand. And it’s free.

Examples: Math homework. Tech help. A personal protective equipment search. Or simply a pleasant conversation during this isolating time. Zappos’ “Customer Service for Anything” team has it covered. Call, text, email.

Sanity spoke with Brian Kalma, the Entrepreneur in Residence at Zappos and the brainchild behind the idea. He shares how the Zappos team got this idea up and running in less than a week flat, offers advice for organizations looking to use their unique skillsets to help in this unprecedented time, and of course, shares his favorite shoe brand! </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:14:00</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5bb3abe92727be32692dbbb4/1590172025237-AU5KSJCSAZBE888RH4BM/S2E7+Cover+Zappos.jpg?format=1500w"/><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><itunes:episode>7</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Ep7: Zappos’ Customer Service for Anything | Brian Kalma, Entrepreneur in Residence, Zappos</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Ep7: Zappos’ Customer Service for Anything | Brian Kalma, Entrepreneur in Residence, Zappos

<itunes:keywords>elected,officials,founders,democracy,entrepreneurs,bipartisan,optimism,sanity,centrist,center,right,center,left,moderate</itunes:keywords>

Ep6: Violinist Comforting the Elderly | Chloe Groth + IWF's #InThisTogether | Hadley Heath Manning

<itunes:author>Sanity Media</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>You know when you meet one of those people that just makes you feel comforted and good? Normally a Suzuki violin teacher, as Covid-19 hit New Orleans, Chloe took to NextDoor to offer her gift of music to those who need it most right now. She now volunteers four days a week to perform (from a distance) for elderly individuals across New Orleans. She brings along her two small sons, who sit by her feet as she unpacks her violin and performs the most special private concerts from front yards and sidewalks. Chloe kindly played for the 93-year-old grandmother of Sanity’s host and the neighborhood listened in. She began with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” There wasn’t a dry eye on the block.

Later in the episode, hear from Hadley Heath Manning from the Independent Women’s Forum. She discusses their #InThisTogether campaign and shares about what it is like to be raising a young family with a spouse who is working on the front lines. </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:16:00</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5bb3abe92727be32692dbbb4/1589561507176-RZ6EEQJ8PIYAXSL45SKZ/S2E6+Chloe+Groth+Cover.jpg?format=1500w"/><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><itunes:episode>6</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Ep6: Violinist Comforting the Elderly | Chloe Groth + IWF's #InThisTogether | Hadley Heath Manning</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Ep6: Violinist Comforting the Elderly | Chloe Groth + IWF's #InThisTogether | Hadley Heath Manning

<itunes:keywords>elected,officials,founders,democracy,entrepreneurs,bipartisan,optimism,sanity,centrist,center,right,center,left,moderate</itunes:keywords>

Ep5: Wildrye Distilling | Troy Downing + Family Meal Sacramento | Clay Nutting

There are over 750 distilleries across all 50 states that are now producing hand sanitizer. -Feeding health care workers at every hospital in the city
-Keeping 25+ local restaurants in business
-Employing local musicians to make deliveries

For Devin, it’s personal: his wife is an ER doctor. She came home one night early into treating Covid-19 and mentioned how much a batch of cookies baked by an ER nurse had uplifted her team’s spirits. He had a lightbulb moment: through the Krewe of Red Beans, Devin’s existing network of restaurant owners across New Orleans could multiply that effect tenfold. And keep them in business. Devin was uniquely positioned to scale, and fast. Ever since, he and his crew have been serving meals for those on the front lines. Spreading “food love,” as he calls it. This week they served their 40,000th meal.

On this episode, we speak with Devin about the work #FeedtheFrontLinesNola is doing and also speak with two local restaurant owners who are part of this network — Lisa Nelson of Queen Trini Lisa and Nathanial Zimmet of Boucherie and Bouree. Lisa shares about her Trinidadian and Tobagonian heritage and Nathanial shares his experience surviving Hurricane Katrina and seeing the city come together during times of hardship.

For Mike Lee, volunteering is an avenue to come together in good times and bad to help others. He shares some of the messages of hope he has heard around the world when communities are facing their most difficult hour.

When Trader Joe’s employee Katie Scott recently purchased masks from an Etsy retailer in Brooklyn, she noted that she worked at Trader Joe’s in the City. Within a few minutes of submitting her order, Katie received a message saying that not only would part of her order be comped, but that extra masks to share with coworkers would soon be on their way . “It was just so joyful,” says Scott. “It definitely warmed my heart. On this episode, hear from the brainchild behind Masks for Heroes, a nationwide movement to donate personal protective equipment (PPE) and from a volunteer who helped construct a COVID-19 field hospital now operating in Central Park.

Becky Vieira is one of those people who makes things happen. A mommy blogger with a sizable online following, she decided to start gathering donated personal protective equipment (PPE) after hearing about shortages in her community. A few short weeks later, her effort, Masks for Heroes, has become a network of thousands of people across the country. They’re collecting donations and getting them to healthcare workers in need from across 30+ states. From teaching followers to sew masks to connecting people who have extra fabric with people who have sewing machines to inspiring others to check their garages for N95 masks, the impact Becky and her 100% volunteer team are having is nothing short of magical. She is truly one of the Helpers.

Later in this episode, hear from Mark Gundersen, a New Yorker who through his church volunteered with Samaritan's Purse to help construct a 68-bed field hospital now operating in Central Park. The fellow volunteers he met there — including nurses from across the country who made their way to New York with 24 hours notice — are true American heroes. </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:15:55</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5bb3abe92727be32692dbbb4/1586410785206-3P1QTM8C4C0W9U3YUJN5/Season+Two+Becky+Vieira.jpg?format=1500w"/><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><itunes:episode>2</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Ep2: Masks for Heroes | Becky Viera + A Hospital in Central Park | Mark Gundersen </itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Ep2: Masks for Heroes | Becky Viera + A Hospital in Central Park | Mark Gundersen

<itunes:keywords>elected,officials,founders,democracy,entrepreneurs,bipartisan,optimism,sanity,centrist,center,right,center,left,moderate</itunes:keywords>

Ep1: Helping kids read | Librarian Tom Bober + Helping brides and grooms cope | Designer Brannon Lewis

<itunes:author>Sanity Media</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>In Season Two's first episode, we hear from Helpers Tom Bober, a librarian at a Captain Elementary in St. Louis, Missouri and from Brannon Lewis, a commercial office designer in Mountain View, California.</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>The day before his school's closure due to Covid-19, Librarian Tom Bober thought quickly on his feet and ensured every single student in his school came through the library. By the afternoon, every child had checked out a stack of books to take home for the long haul — 1,700 books total. In this episode, Tom reflects on what that day was like and shares resources for parents with little ones at home (including a few of his favorite children’s books).

After planning her own wedding last year, Brannon saw that the added expenses of invitations — not to mention “Change the Date” cards — can add up quickly. After seeing friends and strangers being forced to postpone their own weddings, Brannon spent her weekend designing a number of “Change the Date" card templates that are free for anyone to use. “It’s awesome that something that I pulled together in like three to four hours last Saturday is now helping people and getting spread around,” Lewis said. In this episode, Karith talks about what it was like to transform a hostile audience in a jam-packed hall at Oberlin into one welcoming of different perspectives. We also discuss her work as an on-air radio personality on the controversial Don Imus In the Morning show following his comments about the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University and her appearance in the documentary “Can We Take a Joke?,” which garnered support from strange bedfellows such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the Charles Koch Institute.

Karith believes firmly that people from across the political spectrum have good ideas, and the fact that “just because you are not on that side does not mean you shouldn’t think it’s a good idea too” is “insanity.” Unsurprisingly, in Karith’s words, she often feels “like a political alien.” We hope she felt right at home here at Sanity! </itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:duration>00:40:28</itunes:duration><itunes:image href="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5bb3abe92727be32692dbbb4/1565687078802-BN6FI22NJKZ24RY1ZLFJ/Karith+Foster+Cover.jpg?format=1500w"/><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>23</itunes:episode><itunes:title>Ep23: "Polarization is the Mother of Extremism" | Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, Ideas Beyond Borders</itunes:title><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType>

Ep23: "Polarization is the Mother of Extremism" | Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, Ideas Beyond Borders

<itunes:subtitle>Often the only person of color in her childhood classrooms, stand-up comedian Karith Foster spends a lot of her time speaking at universities such as Stanford and Oberlin about taboo subjects in a constructive way.
Human rights activist Faisal Saeed Al Mutar is a survivor of the Iraq Civil War, of being placed on an al-Qaeda death list by a high school classmate, and of the murder of his brother. Faisal escaped Iraq and eventually made his way to the United States in 2013. A firm believer that education and a free flow of ideas across the world can combat extremism, he founded Ideas Beyond Borders in 2017 in an effort to prevent extremism before it takes root.

Ideas Beyond Borders has established a range of international programs to empower individuals with knowledge often suppressed by authoritarian regimes and dictatorships. For example, they've translated millions of words into Arabic to encourage diversity of thought, including books by Steven Pinker (who also serves on their board), Sam Harris, and others. They’ve also partnered with Arabic & Kurdish Wikipedia and have reached millions online.
Did you ever stay quiet in a college classroom in fear of rustling feathers?

If so, the Heterodox Academy wants you to know you’re not alone. Founded in 2015, Heterodox is a non-partisan network of over 2,500 academics across the country that are committed to welcoming a diversity of viewpoints in the classroom. They’re fighting the good fight to promote constructive disagreement (not antonyms!) at institutes of higher learning.

We spoke with their executive director, Deb Mashek, about their important work and about two elements that are critical to learning: discomfort and challenge. Mashek herself is a former college professor and spent 13 years as a Professor of Psychology at Harvey Mudd College. Inspired by the 2016 election, she developed a course entitled I’m Right; You’re Wrong. In this episode, Mashek shares some of her experiences in the classroom and offers a fun take on how secret decoder glasses can help us get in the right frame of mind to understand each other!

After seven years at Fox and a decade in New York City, Jenna moved to Texas with her family and launched SmartHER News. Jenna joined Sanity to talk about the importance of customer service in news (something she learned while working as a waitress), the humility of starting something new, the excitement of presenting at SXSW, and her vision for creating less toxic, more facts first news.

The bright and bubbly Katie Fahey of Grand Rapids, Michigan wanted to do something that captured the energy of the 2016 election that people from across the aisle could actually unite over. Sound impossible? Not to Katie. What started as a Facebook post about taking on gerrymandering in her home state led to hundreds of thousands of Michiganders joining her in the fight. It sounds a like a movie: strangers meeting at warehouses in the middle of the night to make clipboards; three feuding sisters -- an Independent, a Democrat, and a Republican -- reconnecting over the cause; veterinarians doing research in the middle of the night; and thousands of people signing petitions at highway rest stops on Thanksgiving day. Listen to Katie share about how the heck she made it all happen.

Alan Khazei builds movements. First, it was expanding service through City Year, which later became the brainchild for AmeriCorps (which has facilitated 1.2 billion hours of public service!). Then it was expanding social entrepreneurship through Be the Change. Now Alan is spearheading the group Democracy Entrepreneurs, which just hosted its first Democracy Entrepreneurship Summit at the Harvard Kennedy School. Inspired in part by seeing his own family divided by the 2016 election, he’s working “to get underneath what is going on in our democracy” and to support organizations in this space.

In this episode, Alan talks about the importance of service — "not as a Democratic idea or a Republican idea... but as an American idea," about his work to expand service opportunities with Presidents George H. W. Bush and President Bill Clinton, and about his hopes for the future of Democracy Entrepreneurs.

In the 1980s, Jonathan Perman worked on Capitol Hill for a Republican Senator from Illinois...he was a Democrat...and that was not entirely out of the ordinary. Increasingly frustrated by partisan gridlock in Washington, in 2016 Perman teamed up with the Bipartisan Policy Center to create the American Congressional Exchange. The program matches pairs of Republican and Democrat Members of Congress and facilities visits to each other's districts. Combining his passions for politics and travel, his hope is to help build trust in Congress. It's already working -- bipartisan legislation has resulted from ACE's work that has been signed into law.

After experiencing increasingly partisan conversations both at work and at family gatherings, Chen was inspired to quantify and measure partisan divisions in part to start a conversation about what we can do to rectify them. By analyzing over 21 billion pings of smartphone data, Chen and his co-author, Ryne Rohla, found that in 2016, families that celebrated Thanksgiving across partisan lines cut their meals 30 to 50 minutes shorter than those who stuck with company with similar political beliefs.
