1. Get search results from friends :

Personal results are part of Google’s new ‘Search, plus Your World’ update. They show when you run a search while signed into Google, and include Google+ photos and posts shared by you and your friends.

To turn off this feature, click the cog icon in the top-right corner, choose ‘search settings’, then select the option ‘Do not use personal results’.

2. View profiles in search results

If you want to connect to a friend, colleague or celebrity, start typing their name into the search box. Google will attempt to identify who you’re looking for and show a profile containing data from their Google+ page (provide they have one).

3. Find people who share your interests

Run a search for a popular topic, such as cars, and you may  see a list of Google+ users who frequently post about it. If you like what they have to say, you can connect to them via Google+ to of content they share.

4. Block sites you’re not interested in

Run a search in Google and visit the page of one of the results. If you find it’s not what you’re looking for, go back to the results page and you’ll now have the option to block that site, so it doesn’t appearing in your future results (provided you’re signed into Google). You can view blocked sites (and unblock them) under ‘search settings’.

5. View definitions and synonyms

Google search has a built-in dictionary. Type Define, followed by a word to look up and Google will tell you what it means and how to pronounce it. You can also listen to it being spoken. The dictionary results now show you synonyms for that word, which saves you having to search for a thesaurus.

6. Reveal +1 buttons in search results

US / UK commuters can now use Google Maps to plan their rail journeys. Just click the ‘get directions’ button, choose ‘By public transport’ (the train icon) as your travel method, select, select the start and  end points, then pick Train as your preferred travel option. 3. View area boundaries

Ever wondered exactly what areas the first part of your postcode covers? Type it into Google Maps and you’ll see a pink dotted line marking the boundaries Zoom out and the  whole area will be highlighted in pink. This also works with counties and cities.

4. View higher-quality maps and imagery

Google has created a new version of Maps that’s powered by WebGL (Web Graphics Library). This makes use of the latest web technologies to deliver hardware- accelerated performance without the need for any plug-ins. The MapsGL site also features more 3D buildings, 45-degree satellite imagery and speedier access to Street View. To use it, open the standard Maps site in Firefox or chrome and click the ‘try it now’  button, which should appear under Experience MapsGL.

5. Explore more cities in 3D

Google has added 3D buildings to a number of new locations, including Rome, Seville, Amsterdam and Las Vegas. Just fly to one of those cities and Zoom in. 3D representations of all the major buildings will appear as you get closer to the ground.

Google has updated the colors on its calendars, giving you a choice of 24 shades. Existing calendars have already been update to the closest match in the new palette. To change a calendar’s color, click the arrow next its name in ‘My Calendars’ list on the left and choose from the available options.

If you don’t need entries for first thing in the morning or last thing at night’. This will add two handles to the calendar that you can drag up and down to hide the hours you don’t need to be visible.

3. Arrange events using suggested times

Arranging an event or meeting with several colleagues or friends can be difficult if everyone is busy at different times. Fortunately, Calendar can check all the participants’ shared schedules and suggest a time when everyone is free. To use this feature, create an event, add some guests, then  click Suggested Times.

When you click the notifications button in the black Google bar, you’ll now see a more useful sneak preview of any Google+ activity, including how many +1′s and shares your posts have received, all update in real-time.

2. Get more control over photo tagging

Find My Face is an opt-in facial-recognition tool that lets Google+ prompt your friends to tag you whenever you appear in one or more of the photos they’re sharing. You can choose whether to accept or reject the tags once they appear. To allow the feature, click any photo and accept the ‘Turn on Find My Face’ prompt, or go to Google+ settings.

3. Share what’s on your screen

The Hangouts feature lets you share the contents of your screen with friends. Create a new hangout, click the ‘Try Hangouts with extras’ option and then click the green button. When the hangout starts, click share screen at the top of the page and choose the view you want to share.

4. Control the content from your circles

The main Google+ stream contains posts from all your circles, which won’t necessarily be what you want. Fortunately, you can now adjust how much content comes from each circle, ranging from everything to nothing. Select a circle and then use the slider at the top to manage its input.

The Google Translate app has a clever conversation mode that lets two people communicating in different languages take turns to speak into the handset’s microphone. The app then reads out the translations. It supports various languages including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Polish and Russian.

3. Translate your handwriting

The Google Translate app for Android (bit.ly/translate285) recently gained an experimental handwriting-recognition feature. Tap the pencil icon in the top right and write or draw the words or characters to translate. The app recognises a range of language including French, Italian, German, Japanese and Chinese.

4. Create graphs from maths functions

Enter a mathematical function (or a series of function separated by commas) into the search box and you’ll now see an interactive graph that you can zoom in to. You can words like ‘plot’ or ‘graph’ when searching, for example, Graph y = 2x + 1.

5. Find WebP content in Google Images

Webb is a new image format developed by Google as an alternative to JPEG. To look for content encoded using WebP, go to Google Images and click the cog icon in the top-right corner. Select Advanced Image Search and choose WEBP files from the drop-down ‘File type’ menu.

6. Include all words in searches

Google recently axed its ‘+’ search function, which used to ensure a word was included in  searches if it was preceded by a plus sign. If you now want to make sure every term in the box is included in your search, you’ll need to click ‘More search tools’ on the left side of the page and select Verbatim.

7. Perform HTML5 search tricks

Type the phrase ‘do a barrel roll’ into Google and the site will treat your search as a request and do precisely that. Other tricks to try include tying Tilt (or Askew), Google Sphere and Google Gravity. You’ll need to hit the I’m Feeling Lucky link to see the last two in action.

What we liked:

Launched late last year, Ge.tt is one of the newest file-sharing tools, but has quickly become our favourite. Unlike rival services that clutter each page with ads, Ge.tt has a clean, streamlined interface that makes it very straightforward to use. You don’t need to install any software or plug-ins, and can upload massive files right off the bat. Officially, there’s no size limit but your browser may restrict you to 2GB (and don’t forget your ISP’s ‘fair usage’ policy).

Ge.tt doesn’t specify how much online storage you’re allowed, but reserves the right to set a limit, in its terms and conditions. To use Ge.tt, simply click the ‘select files’ button
on the homepage, find what you want to share and click open. Wait a few seconds and you’ll be a given a link to the uploaded file that you can post on facebook and Twitter or send n by email. Usefully, the recipient can view and play (if it’s an MP3) the file online, as well as save it to their hard disk. You can track how many times your files have been downloaded and use the search facility to find specific uploads.

Registering with Ge.tt increases the minimum time your files are stored for, from 30 days to three months. Premium options are planned soon, but it’s not yet clear what these will offer.

How it can be improved:

It’s a shame Ge.tt only lets you upload one item at a time, but the speed with which the service publishes files means it doesn’t take long to add a series of them. More support information would be good-what happens to your files if the service goes down?

Our Verdict
Ge.tt is a brilliant free service for sending people huge files with a minimum of fuss, It’s fast, easy and lets you share links to your files even before they’ve finished uploading.

What we liked:
It took over a minute to upload a video file that took Ge.tt a matter of seconds-but the service offers an array of useful tools. The free version lets you share files of 1GB apiece, without needing to sign up.

Fileserve’s best feature is the ability to let you upload multiple files simultaneously, and if you register with the site you get 500GB of free online storage. Files are kept for 60 days after their last download before they are deleted. We like that fileserve gives you several option for sharing your files once they’re uploaded, including direct links, HTML code for embedding on a website or forum, and buttons for Facebook, Twitter and email. You can add files via FTP and earn money from your downloads via the site’s referrals scheme.

How it can be improved:

You need to upgrade to the premium version-from $9.99 per month-to enjoy decent download speed, ad-free use and no waiting times. The service persistently reminds
you to upgrade, which can become annoying.

Our Verdict
Fileserve makes it easy to upload and download lots of at once, but you’ll need to pay for the best speeds.

Megaupload

What we liked:
Like Fileserve, Megaupload lets you share multiple files at once, but adding items from your hard disk isn’t quite as speedy as with our silver Award Winner. This is because you need to enter a description for every file you want to upload, which seems rather
pointless. On the recipient’s email address at the upload stage to save time later on.
Megaupload’s free option has a maximum file limit of 1GB,and gives you 200GB of online storage. Files are usually kept for 90 days after their last download, though they last deleted after 21 days if uploaded anonymously.

We like the Megaupload Mega Manager, a stand-alone program that uploads files faster than from within your browser, and which can resume broken toolbar also lets
you share files on the fly.

How it can improved:
For all its great features, Megaupload isn’t particularly fast at uploading or downloading files, although Mega Manager does help. Unsurprisingly, these speed issues are solved
if you pay from $9.99 (about $8.89) per month for premium membership.

Our Verdict
Although it makes you and your recipient wait, Megaupload is a generous service with some very handy file-sharing tools.

Best of the Rest:

File Dropper

If size was everything, File Dropper-which lets you share files of up to 5GB-Would Win this huge capacity is offset by the lack of sharing features, the fact you can only upload one file at a time and that files are deleted after 30 days if no-one downloads them. Still, the site is very speedy and you don’t need to register to use it.

Dropsend

The free version of Dropsend lets you send files of up to 2GB,and provides 250GB,of online storage. But you can only share five files per month and speed isn’t great. You can get round these problems by upgrading to a paid-for account, from $5 (about $3.05) per month.

zShare

You don’t need to register to use zShare but there are pros if you do sign up for free-fewer adverts, faster uploads, and the ability to send multiple files of up to 1GB each. However, the service-around since 2005-is starting to show its age, and makes you wait 20 seconds before your downloads start.

RapidShare

RapidShare was once the file-sharing service of choice for savvy web users, but it looks rather old-fashioned next to the current crop of tools. Uploads are fast but downloads certainly aren’t, and you can ‘only’ share files of up to 500MB. We also found that some of the download links we created without registering with the site failed to work.

4. Purchases from iTunes

One of the best services from Apple is iTunes, any purchased music, app, movie etc can be downloaded again from your account purchases. So there should be no hassles in downloading them. Also if you have a subscription from iTunes match , which comes in yearly form then can download any music you’ve either matched or uploaded.

5. iPhone and its data

Your phone have some very big part in getting your photos and music. As soon as you connect the iPhone from your new computer or a repaired one it will ask to fetch all the photos, but for the music we have to get some externam help as music from iPhone can’t be copied with simple techniques. We recommend a tool i.e Ecamm Network which is paid ($29.95) but it does the trick, by fetching all songs from your iPhone device.
